Truly Visible

Summary:

Being invisible sucks, and Toru knows that better than most.

Work Text:

Being invisible had very, very few perks, and Hagakure Toru knew that better than most.

It came with the territory of being invisible, of course. It was even worse when you were someone like Toru, bright and bubbly and out there. But when you're just the invisible girl, what you act like doesn't really matter. It was even harder when you wanted to be a hero. Toru's classmates were all so incredibly /there/.

Maybe they had big personalities, like Aoyama, or flashy quirks, like Bakugou, or they just looked amazing, like Tokoyami. Even her more plain (if that was even possible) classmates stood out more that the girl who you couldn't even see.

She surrounded herself with people, which might have been counterintuitive, but it meant that someone was paying attention to her, and that's all she really needed. Attention. And, oddly enough, the people she seemed to constantly attract were so visible. Ojirou, Mina, Shouji, these were her closest friends. Even back in middle school, Ishii with her electric blue skin and Tajima with his spiky tail. The people Toru loved were the ones that washed her out.

Her dream of being a hero was even countered by her invisibility. Flashy clothes weren't an option if she wanted to make the full use of her quirk, and other than that there was nothing she could do. Toru prided herself on being able to actually be useful in a fight. Even if she was more visible, Ishii couldn't sneak around the battlefield and surprise enemies. Her stealth skills were the only reason Bakugou tolerated her.

Toru voiced her feelings often, especially about being seen. She worried sometimes that she was too repetitive and would annoy everyone away, but her classmates never complained. Whenever Toru started feeling particularly bad about herself, Mina would reach over and squish her cheeks. (That was one of many things Toru adored about Mina. The pink skinned girl was more of an observer than she liked to let on, especially when it came to her friends. She always knew exactly where every part of Toru was, no matter what). Once Toru's cheeks were burning, Mina would look her right in the eyes and say "You are the most incredible person I have ever met."

Mina was honestly a godsend. If it wasn't for her and Ojirou, Toru might have asked to drop out. She was hardly good at the stealth that she was always assigned, but Shouji had made it his mission to train her up. Mina gave the best hugs and the best advice, and Ojirou could just look at Toru and know something was wrong (even though he couldn't see her). The whole class was awesome, actually. Deku would always tell her how amazing she had been during training, Kirishima would complain with her about a lack of a flashy quirk, Uraraka would give her work out tips. Hell, even that little grape demon Mineta gave her a thumbs ups when she would succeed in some excersize.

So, yes. Being invisible sucked hard. But her class made her feel almost, truly visible.
