Work Text:
His whole life, Jeongguk has always completely hated waking up early in the mornings. Nothing can change his mind.
To him, it was beyond understandable how people got up even earlier than they needed to, just to be a little more prepared for the day, or to workout. He’d always slept through every moment he could get, and had never had a problem with sleeping in his life.
Which was why he was more than confused when found himself slowly waking up, his eyes heavy with sleep and he could tell the sun hadn’t even fully come out yet. On instinct he closed his eyes, hoping to be able to fall back asleep and get maybe a few more hours in before he had to wake up.
But nothing.
All that happened was he slowly became aware of everything around him, despite his eyes being shut. The faint noise of early morning traffic outside. The one ray of early morning sunlight that peeked through the curtains, that he could see the brightness of even with his eyes closed. He could feel the slight chill in the room, the coldness of the coming winter outside somehow finding a way in. He felt the warmth under the blankets, heard the quiet noise of blankets russling.
Realising that sleep seemed to be far off now, Jeongguk begrudgingly opened his eyes. However, he certainly wasn’t to complain with the sight he was greeted with.
His boyfriend, Taehyung, lay facing him only inches away. His cheek rested on the nearby pillow, hair slightly puffy and sticking up in multiple directions, but it was cute. The sound of soft snores left his mouth which hung slightly open, yet his lips were still pushed out in a small pout. Every so often he’d give a quiet sigh in his sleep, nuzzling his cheek further into the pillow as he shifted only slightly.
It wasn’t long before he realised the reason he was able to see him was because that one stream of early morning sunlight was beaming right on to him. Jeongguk couldn’t help but compare him to an angel, as cliché as it was, with the way he seemed to be glowing in the light. Taehyung had always been perfect, but seeing him like this was something else.
Usually Taehyung was the one to wake up before him, so he’d have time to get ready for the day. His boyfriend usually wore at least minimal makeup when he was around, despite the younger insisting he didn’t need it. Which he truly believed. Seeing him like this, so bare and peaceful, brought back that fluttering feeling in his stomach he’d constantly faced when they’d first met.
He couldn’t help himself, and after what seemed to be hours he slowly lifted his hand up to the others face. It was only a light touch, running the back of his index finger down the cheek that wasn’t squished into the pillow, soft smile never leaving his lips. However maybe his touch wasn’t light enough, and he moved to quickly pull his hand away as Taehyung scrunched up his nose, moving around in his sleep.
But before he could pull it back all the way, his wrist was grabbed. His eyes widened slightly in surprise as he looked down at the olders hold on his wrist, having thought Taehyung was still asleep.
Glancing back to his face, he saw that definitely wasn’t the case. His heart skipped a beat in his chest as he looked back up to see Taehyung watching him with a sleepy grin, his eyes still glazed over with sleep. “Good morning…” He whispered, and Jeongguk found himself unable to form words at how soft he sounded.
Taehyung watched him in some form of amusement at the lack of reply, the younger simply staring at him. His mind was still hazy with sleep but he let go of his wrist, opting to instead intertwine their fingers. “Aren’t you going to say it back?” He asked teasingly, tilting his head.
Once air found its way back into his chest, the corners of his lips tugged up into another small smile. “Morning…” Jeongguk said back, squeezing the others hand in his own.
There was a quiet hum, and he watched as Taehyung lifted his hand to his mouth, leaving a kiss on the back of it. “It’s early.” He commented, eyes never leaving his. “You’re never up early… What were you doing? Is everything okay?”
And just like that his heart grew another ten sizes. He really was perfect.
Jeongguk gave a light noise, his hand that wasn’t laced with Taehyung’s coming up from his side, to run across his cheek like he’d done earlier when he’d assumed he was asleep. “Couldn’t get back to sleep, didn’t mean to wake you.” He murmured in explanation, eyes flickering across Taehyung’s face to take in every small detail he could. “Are you always this pretty in the mornings?”
The older let out a small laugh in surprise, but couldn’t hide the red tint that flooded his cheeks at the question. “What are you talking about?” He huffed out in embarrassment, closing his eyes to hide from his gaze, though leaned into the hand against his cheek.
“I don’t know. You just… You look so peaceful, so relaxed.” Jeongguk let out a sigh, brushing his thumb across his cheek, before lightly over his lips. “You pout in your sleep, too. I didn’t know you did that… It’s really cute.” He told him, fingers moving back up to brush over his other cheek. “You also wiggle around, too. Not bad, though. It’s like you’re trying to cuddle into the pillow, to get comfortable.”
During his mini ramble, Taehyung had reopened his eyes, watching him in awe. Jeongguk continued, unfazed, his hand moving down to his waist to tug him slightly closer as he press a gentle kiss to his forehead. “And now your eyes in this light, too…” He added, fondly.
Taehyung wasn’t sure what to say, usually being one to love compliments from his boyfriend, but they weren’t usually like this. He happily curled his free arm around Jeongguk’s side as he was pulled closer, basking in the warmth he provided compared to the breeze he could feel just outside the covers. “Shut up…” Was all he could muster up in his flustered state.
Luckily Jeongguk didn’t take offence to it, slight smile still on his lips as he leaned back a little to look over his face once more. Taehyung stared right back at him, somewhat overwhelmed by the utter adoration he could see in the youngers eyes, making him seem so vulnerable.
He didn’t get a verbal response to that though, as he instead leaned in to press their lips together. Taehyung couldn’t bring himself to break the moment to chide him about brushing their teeth first, letting himself lean into it.
Morning breath wasn’t much of a worry, though. The kisses stayed very much innocent, light presses of their lips every few seconds, both of them unable to stop themselves from occasionally smiling into it. It reminded them of their first kiss, both so hesitant and both so scared to break the moment.
But it wasn’t the same now, though. Right now, they just wanted to take in each other presence, stay as close as they could to each other. They knew they had all the time in the world to do other things, neither of them were going anywhere anytime soon, and these were the moments they wanted to keep for a long time.
It was maybe ten minutes that they lay there. Both with one arm around the others waist, the other hand in each others grip. Legs intertwined under the blankets, keeping them warm. They lay facing each other, faces barely a millimetre apart, exchanging gentle kisses every few seconds under the soft light of the rising sun. And it was nothing short of perfect.
It was Jeongguk who pulled away first, hand moving back up from his waist, to run his thumb over the curve of his jaw. His eyes flickered across his face, as if trying to memorise every detail he could see. He stayed like that for a few seconds, the older happy enough to simply lean into the touch again, closing his eyes. His thumb paused eventually, and Taehyung opened his eyes to look at him questioningly.
Jeongguk was looking at him, ever growing fondness in his eyes. He spoke up quietly when his eyes met Taehyung's, sounding almost breathless. “God…” He’d whispered. “I love you. So much..”
A warm smile. A gentle kiss. Both of them relaxing into each other.
“I love you too, Gguk.”
They fell back asleep like that, cuddled up close, the light of the rising sun slowly filling the room that’d wake them in a few hours. But for now, they were content.
And maybe now, after seeing Taehyung so peaceful - the two of them feeling so untouchable - under the sunrise… Jeongguk didn’t hate waking up early in the morning so much after all.
