Work Text:
Shouto realises something is off early in the morning. Despite it still technically being spring break, as heroes in training and not nearly at the level Aizawa deems worthy of starting third-years, soon-to-be class 3-A is stuck at U.A. on what is supposed to be their last days of freedom. As most of his classmates fight to keep their heads from hitting their desks, bleary-eyed and unfocused, Shouto is digging through his messenger bag with his brow furrowed and the inside of his cheek trapped between his teeth, searching for his pen case.
It might be early, but Shouto clearly remembers putting it in his bag the night before after settling back into the dorms. He knows for a fact that he had neatly placed it right next to the new notebooks at the end of the bag, along with a tiny All Might stress ball Izuku had won him at some silly arcade game on one of their first dates. And yet, as he empties his bag onto his desk, the case is nowhere to be found. He frowns.
“Good morning!” Shouto looks up to meet bright green eyes and a smile even more blinding than the sun shyly shining down its early morning light. “Looking for something?”
Izuku points at Shouto’s scattered belongings, a small chuckle shaking his shoulders. Raising one eyebrow somewhat suspiciously, Shouto nods wordlessly, letting out a small huff and Izuku hums in thought. The way he brings his index up to his chin is just a little too showy, too exaggerated and intentionally innocent, and Shouto narrows his eyes at him.
“Well,” he starts, reaching for his own yellow backpack and digging through it, “if you can’t find your stuff, you can use some of mine!”
Turning back around, Izuku hands him a blue and yellow mechanical pencil and an eraser before returning to his desk with a goofy smile dancing on his lips. Shouto looks down at the pencil spotting a folded-up piece of paper very obviously tied around its middle. In spite of himself, Shouto feels the corners of his mouth twitch upwards as he takes the small note and unfurls it, his small smile stretching a bit further when he spots Izuku bouncing in his seat while he watches.
‘I would say you look good today but that would imply you don’t always look stunning <3’
Aizawa finally makes it into the room, looking as tired as ever, and goes through the lesson plans for the day. With warmth blooming in his chest, Shouto places the paper between one of his notebooks’ pages and forces himself to pay attention to his teacher rather than how Izuku is absolutely radiating joy just a couple of desks away. He doesn’t do a very good job.
Day-dreaming about his sunshine of a boyfriend during what is supposed to be an intensive set of extra classes proves to be just as dumb as it sounds and Shouto gets called on far too many times for his liking. At least Izuku has the decency to look a little bashful, flinching whenever a grumbling “Todoroki, maybe you’d like to answer this yourself, again” echoes throughout the painfully quiet classroom. Lucky for him, he only gets truly caught off-guard on two of those occasions.
When lunch finally rolls around, Izuku is by his side before he even has the chance to fully get out of his seat, bowing his head and apologising for inadvertently distracting him, though the tilt of his lips makes it seem like he enjoys it a lot more than he regrets it. With a little huff, he wraps an arm around his boyfriend’s waist and starts walking to the cafeteria, only noticing when they’re already out of the door that he can’t feel his wallet where it’s supposed to be safely tucked in his pocket.
Shouto stops and Izuku looks up at him, a questioning hum at his smirking lips. “What’s up?”
“Where did you put it?”
“Put what?”
“You know very well what. Where’s my wallet?”
“I have no idea what you mean,” Izuku smiles, sickeningly sweet, “but if you can’t pay for lunch then, you’re in luck!”
“Am I, now?”
“Yep.” Izuku pops the ‘p’ at the end of the word, way too proud of himself for whatever he has accomplished and leads Shouto back to the classroom by his hand.
Like a dutiful boyfriend, Shouto follows with a small, amused sigh, sitting on Bakugou’s desk as he watches Izuku once again rummage through his backpack. This time, he pulls out a small white and red bento box and a green one to match, grinning as if this is the best day of his entire life.
“I happened to make us lunch this morning. We can eat together, I know just the place.”
As Izuku leads them up the stairs, Shouto holding the green bento box while Izuku takes the red and white one – a nice touch, he should say –, he can’t really resist the urge to take his boyfriend’s hand and squeeze it. Izuku smiles at him, a new spring to his step as they keep climbing further up.
They finally make it to the roof, completely ignoring the sign blatantly telling them not to go through that door and keeping it open with a wooden stop right outside that clearly means they’re not the only ones doing it. There is already a blanket stretched in the middle of the roof, waiting for them sit by each other’s side and enjoy a quiet meal together.
Shouto chuckles when he opens the box and sees his lunch arranged in a shape vaguely reminiscent of Izuku’s freckled face, green vegetables over at the top and everything.
“Would I be right to assume yours looks suspiciously like me?”
Rather than an actual answer, all Izuku gives him is a small giggle, popping some rice into his mouth. Shouto follows his lead, chewing in silence and leaning on Izuku’s side then rubbing his cheek on his boyfriend’s fluffy wild curls. A small contented noise crawls from Izuku’s throat and Shouto’s heart gives a pleasant squeeze.
“So, what’s the occasion? I’m pretty sure it’s not our anniversary and it’s definitely not my birthday…”
Izuku hums, taking some egg and pointing the chopsticks at Shouto for him to eat. “It’s April Fool’s,” He mumbles between chewing, “but I wasn’t going to play mean pranks on you.”
“Why play any pranks at all?”
“Because…” Izuku blushes and Shouto nuzzles his warm cheek. “It’s an excuse to do something nice and fun.”
“Alright then. Thank you.” Izuku turns to face him and Shouto places a tender kiss on his lips. “Should I be expecting any more pranks then?”
Izuku laughs as he looks back at his food. “That’s for me to know and you to find out.”
