“ I’m home...”
Ray called out as he returned from a very eventful day at school. The boy couldn’t believe he did what he did in front of everyone. He could still see Emma’s surprised face and Norman’s confused one. One thing for sure, he regretted every little thing he did.
The black haired boy took off his shoes before walking to the kitchen. He found his mother, Isabella, cooking dinner already. She looked at him and smiled.
“ Dinner is almost ready, go and change.”
Ray nodded and went to his room. As he changed to something more comfortable he looked to a old photo of him and his best friends. He grimaced like the photo actually did some damage to him. When he finished, the boy went back to the kitchen only to find out that his mother wasn’t there.
“Mama?”
Ray called for his mother. He heard a reply in the living room and went in search of the woman. As he suspected, Isabella was in the living room, sitting in the sofa. She motion Ray to sit right next to him. He did what she asked.
“What’s wrong Ray? You disappeared before I left the school.”
Right, Isabella was the nursery teacher at his school. Ray looked away ashamed.
“Nothing, I needed to think alone for a while.”
Isabella hummed, not really believing what his son was saying.
“ Ray, tell me the truth. I gave birth to you so I know when you’re hiding something.”
The black haired boy wanted to curl up into a ball or dig a hole and die there. He knew he couldn’t lie to his mother, she would find a way to know what really happened so Ray settled for a half-truth.
“ I...”
Ray started, embarrassed.
“I did something really stupid in Drama class. Now probably Emma and Norman will hate me for life.”
“ Was it the big presentation you were practicing with Gilda?”
The boy nodded. Isabella then hugged his son. Ray was quite surprised. His mother didn’t do acts of affection very often. He heard her laugh a little, making fun of him. Ray blushed furiously.
“Mama...”
Ray whined.
“ Sorry but if I know those children like you then I know they wouldn’t hate you. Ever.”
Isabella started to softly stroke her son’s head. He liked that. She also started to hum a lullaby.
Not just any lullaby.
It was the lullaby that she sang all the time. The lullaby which she sang while he was in her belly. The lullaby from her first love. The lullaby with no name.
Ray also knew that lullaby by heart. So he started to hum it as well.
It was soothing.
When they finished, Isabella looked at her son fondly. Ray looked back at her, looking directly into her purple eyes.
“Better?”
Isabella asked. Her son nodded. They stopped hugging after that. That hug would be the only hug he would receive from his mother in the year probably.
Ray sniffed once. Something smelled funny. He sniffed twice. Oh he knew pretty well what that was.
“Mam-“
“Oh shit, the food!”
Isabella ran as fast as she could to stop the food for burning. Ray had a mischievous smile on his face.
“Try not to burn the house, will ya?”
“Haha... Real funny coming from you, you little bitch.”
Ray laughed hard as he looked up the nearest pizzeria’s number because he knew that the dinner was already burned.
