Chapter Text
Walking corpses.
Of course it was walking corpses!
When was it not?
Okay, sometimes it was not.
But 99% of the time? Walking corpses.
The lowest level opponent. The slime of the world. And frankly the best target for young cultivators (and also very lazy ones).
“A-Yuan! Do your best!” Wei Wuxian waved and shouted from the sidelines, crouched up in a tree, like a mother watching their kid perform a play for the first time in front of their peers.
Lan Sizhui felt his ears grow warm, and grumbled under his breath.
“Yeah, do your best, A-Yuan. ” Jin Ling snickered.
“You should keep your well wishes, you’ll need all the help you can get Princess .” Lan Jingyi flashed a grin to the so-called Princess, whose snickering fell silent, and simply “ Hmph”ed.
Wei Wuxian sighed as he watched the three youths beneath them. Ah- How much they had grown in the past little while! Even though they were surrounded by walking corpses, they were still able to bicker with each other.
Tonight was one of those night hunts where only himself and the three went out together. They never strayed too far from the Cloud Recesses on these nights, so he was never sure if the youths were becoming more confident in their abilities, or they were just comfortable knowing Wei Wuxian and the Gusu Lan Sect was just a shout away.
Nevertheless, the three were definitely becoming more skilled.
As soon as the fighting started, the bickering ceased and the three danced about the battlefield swiftly and easily taking care of all the enemies within range. Each one watched the back of the other, and never strayed too far. Wei Wuxian stroked his chin and hummed, maybe he could start bringing them on more dangerous missions?
Well, that was if the two biggest grouches of the 3 realms would let him.
Seeing that the group had just about finished up without needing him, he hopped off the tree branch and landed firmly on the ground. With a light whistle he strolled over to the group, “Nice job.” He poked absentmindedly at the corpse at his feet as it slowly turned into dust.
“Hmph. Of course we did! We aren’t children.”
“Says the child.”
A flash of anger, the two sides were glaring at each other with a poor Lan Sizhui in between, “Lan Jingyi, Jin Ling….”
Bickering before fighting, bickering after fighting. Lan Sizhui sighed, and looked to his father, who continued to be staring at the remains of the corpse, a pensive look on his face.
“Senior Wei?” Lan Jingyi spoke first.
“Hm? Oh!” He looked up at the trio, who seemed confused about what he was doing. He laughed and stood up, brushing his pants off. “Sorry, sorry.” He walked towards the group, and gave Lan Jingyi and Jin Ling hard slaps on their back that made them falter and gasp in surprise. Yet for Lan Sizhui he rubbed his head and laughed louder. “You three did a really good job out there!" The three all blushed in one way or another, “Good, good! Now how about us four get something to eat on the way back?”
The three spoke in unison without missing a beat, “Only if you can’t pick the menu!”
