Work Text:

You had met Yoongi through Namjoon when you had moved abroad to study in an international university of arts of Philadelphia. Yoongi was studying music as he wanted to become a professional musician and composer, Namjoon studying mainly literature and art history while sometimes taking musical courses with Yoongi, and you studied digital arts and visual communication.

You were younger than them with Yoongi being 25, Namjoon 24 and you just turned 20. You met them at the beginning of your first year because Namjoon was one of the tutors who were helping new students getting to know the building, general rules, schedules and other students. You almost immediately befriended each other when you two started chatting about the books you liked and the music you listened; that’s when Namjoon suggested you to join him at evening to go to a band club where he and his friend were helping people to play instruments and make music digitally. You agreed bashfully.

You were nervous and shy first. While Namjoon was friendly and spoke much, Yoongi was quiet and expressionless. Namjoon was also a bit better in speaking English than Yoongi, but you didn’t mind as English wasn’t your mother language either. You had guessed that the two were from somewhere close to East Asia based on the conversations they had between them in a foreign language, and Namjoon told you that they were both from South Korea when he noticed your baffled expressions during their talks. You had mentioned to them that one of your older classmates majoring in photography, Taehyung, was also talking Korean. The four of you became friends. Taehyung’s older brother Jin sometimes hung out with you, making the group number five.

During your first year you had taken a mandatory PE class that you thought was almost a complete waste of your time; you had always hated running and playing sports, but luckily there were also gymnastics and dance lessons which you found quite entertaining. That’s where you met Jimin, Hoseok and Jungkook; the first two had transferred to your school from Seoul, and Jungkook moved with his parents to America when he was five years old. The three of them were absolutely the best dancers you had ever seen.

It was funny, really; you were hanging out with seven boys from Korea, being the only female and the only non-Korean person in the group (Jungkook said that he was more American than Korean, but he still talked with the others in Korean sometimes). You didn’t mind, though; they tired to teach you some words in Korean, but they mainly spoke English automatically because every lesson was in English at school. At first you had trouble pronouncing their names right, but they didn’t mind at all and teased you only a little.

The first months were weird, in a way. The dynamic of your chaos of a group was, well… chaotic. Jin was the oldest, so the others respected him (it apparently was very important in Korea to respect older people). Yoongi was the second oldest, Hoseok and Namjoon were the same age. Jimin and Taehyung were also the same age, both being 23. Jungkook was a year older than you being 21 and making you the youngest. They adored you in their own way, calling you their little sister sometimes except for Jin and Yoongi, though; Jin took on a parental role over all of you and Yoongi always called you by your name.

You and Yoongi had started dating in April after his performance. It came as a surprise to you, really; you two were kind of different from each other when it came to personalities. You were like Namjoon; social and talkative. Jungkook’s mischievousness rubbed on you, and the two of you joked around a lot with Jimin and Taehyung. You also had a quiet side to you and you also appreciated the time spent alone as Yoongi did.

It happened slowly over the year, the two of you pining over each other. You two became good friends first; you liked the band club a lot and it was a common topic between you, Yoongi and Namjoon. Yoongi was eager to teach you everything that you wanted to learn, from guitar playing to making a melody for a whole song. Yoongi was good to be around with, as it was nice sometimes just to hang out, listen to music and barely talk at all. He was the kind of person who chose his words wisely and didn’t talk if he had nothing to say in particular.

Now that you think of it, it was Namjoon who first noticed the quick glances and small smiles targeted towards you. It was also Namjoon who had known Yoongi for the longest and knew that the other was afraid of telling his feelings to anyone. Especially you, because he felt that the friendship between the two of you was too precious to ruin. When it came to your feelings, it was Jungkook who asked if you liked Yoongi. You had been drinking with him, Jimin and Hoseok one night when he confessed to you about his feelings for Taehyung and you weren’t surprised at all. You convinced him to talk to Tae when they saw each other the next time and Jungkook promised only if you’d confess your feelings to Yoongi at some point. You were taken aback because you had never seen Jungkook look as serious as he looked that night. So, you promised.

It took a while for things to go forward after that. Yoongi had asked Namjoon not to tell anyone. Jungkook reminded you a couple of times about your promise, but you always told him not to tell a soul because you weren’t sure about things. You were quite sure that he had told to Taehyung now that the two were dating but you didn’t mind as you trusted both of them.

So, it all started one time during a lunch break when Yoongi asked you if you’d like to come and see his first performance outside school projects. You knew that he had been working hard with his personal projects for a long time so you agreed immediately to go and see him. He had invited the others too, and you were all excited to go and see what he had been working on so secretly. Namjoon probably had a hard time keeping his composure as the both of you couldn't stop talking about each other to him.

In early April, the performance was held at a small basement bar. The chilly wind bit your skin as you walked nervously to the bar and started to dig your ID from your bag; it didn’t help your nervousness at all when the bouncer looked at your face, smiled and asked a lady at the coat racks to show you to your table. The others were already standing around two circular tables, Jungkook passing you a glass of rum coke. You tried not to drink too much, but the alcohol helped your beating heart to calm down a little was you waited for the performance to start.

It was in a middle of you and Tae talking about Overwatch when the lights dimmed and background music started to play; you felt goosebumps rise along your arms as the host introduced and welcomed Agust D on the stage. As soon as the host left the stage, Yoongi hopped on the stage and started rapping and you felt you stomach drop. You had never seen him like that, smirking and spitting fire, smoky eyes glancing the crowd under his bucket hat. All the boys were shouting and jumping and Jungkook flashed you a knowing smile as you only stared at Yoongi. As you met his gaze and he smirked at you, you smiled and started to shout with the others.

You didn’t know how you got through the backstage and to the dimly lit alleyway outside the club with roses in your hand, but Yoongi was there, smoking a cigarette. He looked up and dumped the cigarette against the brick wall and dared to smile a gummy smile at you. You walked to him, offering the roses that Namjoon had placed in your hand at the bar. Yoongi took the roses and had the audacity to ask if you liked the gig. You felt like crying when you smiled and told him how proud you were, and that was when he placed a hand around your neck and the two of you kissed. It was nothing like you’ve ever experienced; the cold air biting your hot cheeks, his lips on yours, the smell of cigarettes and him. You’re not sure how long you two stayed at the alley, but when you joined the others, Namjoon’s “took you long enough” probably meant two things.
