Work Header

the world is prettier in your eyes

Summary:

Teruki usually doesn't have any issues dealing with his emotions when he hangs out with Mob.

Usually.

Usually, is the key word, until you factor in the rain, an umbrella, and a crush so big you could see it from space.

Work Text:

The rain was nothing but a light drizzle, but Mob had insisted on taking out his old umbrella anyway. Teruki couldn't help but note its fraying edges, along with a small stain situated near the middle when he looked. He wondered what it was from. Probably something Reigen did, he'd bet.

His musing on how you even stain an umbrella in the first place, however, was honestly just him trying to distract himself from Mob.

In the simple times like these was when Teruki appreciated him yet was distracted by him the most. No insanity or chaos to occupy him, no one else to bring to the conversation, no expectations to put up a certain face.. It was just him and Mob.

But the longer you stared at someone, the creepier you got, which is something Teruki was actively trying to avoid. Honest! But he couldn't help the small things that kept bringing his attention back to his rather quiet companion. Like the way he absently rubbed his thumb over the handle of the umbrella. Or how he fiddled with the strap of his bag with his free hand, seemingly concerned with a stray thread.

The worst, though, was that soft, open look on Mob's face when he was observing the world around them. The sun and the rain worked wonders together, the light bringing a sheen to their damp surroundings, but Teruki could only admire how it was all reflected in Mob's shining eyes. He breathed it all in naturally as they walked, in his element amidst the calm scenery.

Almost as if in challenge to the serenity, the rain picked up a little bit, creating a repetitive tapping noise against their cover.

Mob, the absolute devil, spun the umbrella to disrupt the pattern. The small smile on his face when he did so made Teruki felt like his heart was going to drop out from his shoes and probably land in a puddle somewhere.

He couldn't but help but feel a little bit stupid, getting so worked up over Mob just being.. Well, Mob. It's hard, though, when he started seeing all of his ticks and quirks as something adorable. Something cute only he could do, that made his stomach churn and his face burn. It was stupid, stupid..

"Hanazawa-kun?" The soft lilt caught his attention, bringing it instead to the blank face of his friend. There was a sort of odd edge in his voice that laced his monotone words, something the blond assumed was concern.

He fumbled for a moment, still lost in his thoughts before he sputtered, "Yes, Kageyama?" He never used to have this much of an issue talking to Mob, never had to forcibly steel his attention from that gentle look in his eyes, earnest in his own way. Never had to scramble for his words or making himself look like a ditz. Never had to squash the urge to hug his friend tight and shower him with endless affection and spend all his afternoons and weekends with him and-

Meanwhile, Mob hummed, taking a minute to gather his thoughts. "You seem.. Um, off, today," He paused, almost hesitant. Like he didn't want to pry. Concern winning out, he murmured, "Are you okay?"

He really had to be kind and caring to top it all off, huh?

As well as oblivious as hell.

Teruki, before blurting out his feelings, paused for a second, contemplating his next words. Did he really wanna do this now, unprepared and in the heat of the moment?

No. He'd wait, make it special.

He plastered a grin on his face.

"Never been better."
And he absolutely meant it.

Mob, finally seeming to pick up on it, responded with a small quirk of his lips.
"Ah. That's good,"

This boy was going to be the death of him.

Notes:

Ahh I've never done a week long series before! Finals have been kinda stressing me out, so I got back into my Mob Psycho hype, until I realized it was TeruMob week!! I know I'm a day late, but I really wanted to try this for once with my favorite dummies. It's not the best I've done, but it's still cute to me, and I'm proud of what I made.

EDIT: Sooo finals ended up getting the best of me, and I completely forgot about terumob week, so change of plans: this is just standalone. Let's hope next year I can pull through!!
