If you’re going to ask Yoongi what he wants to do in life the most, his answer would revolve on how much he despises his roommate and how much he wants to punch his beautiful perfect face right now.
For the majority of Yoongi’s life, nothing really came his way other than getting accepted into the university that he always wanted to get into. His wish of having an amazing roommate was crushed the moment Kim Seokjin stepped inside the same room as his, almost two years ago. He also wished to avoid being the head of the music club in his third year but life had its own plans.
It all started that day.
Yoongi closed his eyes, listening to the sound coming out of the piano every time he presses a set of black and white keys. His body was indulged with the way the sounds reflected the feeling that he wanted to put out, casually playing with the tempo alternating between fast and slow. He ended it with a simple note, filling the room with applauds before he spoke, “Next week, we will be recruiting new members to our club. Mostly freshmen to make sure we keep this club alive.” Yoongi stated when the applause died down, “We’re going to need a lot of members for the yearly festival.”
Normally, the music club wouldn’t really care how many of the students will join. They have different sub-groups under the umbrella of the music club filling up enough slots for each instrument. Normally, at least five people per instrument was enough. But this year, he was forced to recruit more members and Yoongi wasn’t even surprised that it was Kim Seokjin’s fault.
Every year, the university holds an event showcasing the talents of the students in the university. Each student is required to have at least one club, requiring everyone to perform or at least do something in the said event because most audiences would be people from different agencies scouting potential students to take in the future.
In the past three years of Yoongi’s life as a member of the music club, he wasn’t really assigned that much in the stages. He probably just played one or two pieces with the accompaniment of cellos, violins and even the saxophone. But that’s about it for his own club. Sometimes his roommate, Seokjin, would ask for help in the acting club recording a few pieces for their musical stages or background effects per se.
But this year, the charms of Kim Seokjin made its way to the university dean’s heart whining about how the acting club doesn’t gain much members and attention from the scouts because people nowadays were more interested in musical and dancing stages than acting. Stage acting wasn’t given much attention because everything can be watched on the television or online. So, he made his brain work ruining Yoongi’s plan as the head of the music club.
The day Yoongi was announced to be the head of the music club, he didn’t feel much of the happiness nor the pressure. He was mostly cool about it but enjoyed the fact that he will be assigned in giving out the pieces to study and the mixing programs to learn about. To him, it felt somewhat nice that people believed in him and acknowledged his passion for music.
Yoongi was busy all summer debating whether to go for the classic Chopin or to switch things up with Debussy who seems to be getting the attention lately. Other than that, he listened to a lot of pieces analysing the difference in composition style of each musician. Yoongi did a lot.
He had a lot of sleepless nights trying to fight the comforting sound that almost dozes him to sleep. Having to choose between pieces on which is better despite both pieces being extraordinary to him. It scarred him that he had to choose between his comfort sound of Des pas sur la neige and the classic Chopin Nocturne no. 20 that took him a while to perfect because of the complexity of the notes.
But all of those hard work and efforts were put to nothing on the day he stepped foot the stage playing a piece of Tchaikovsky along with Seokjin’s narration, “Two households both alike in dignity. In fair Verona, where we lay our scene.” Queue acting club members. “From ancient grudge to new mutiny. Where civil blood makes civil hands unclean. From forth the fatal loins of these two foes.” So fucking long. “A pair of star crossed lovers take their life; whole misadventured piteous overthrows.”
Seokjin continued with what seemed like a eulogy to Yoongi while he plays Tchaikovsky ’s piece called Romeo and Juliet and his co-member orchestrates the rest of the instruments to accompany his piano.
Every year, the university holds an event showcasing the talents of the students in the university and for this year , Seokjin’s brain (and the lack of members in his club) idealised a joint play including the music club and dance club forming a large number of people as man power for the entire production of the play. And just as expected, Seokjin’s charm did the trick and made the dean approved to such– disregarding all of the plans every club head had planned for the entire semester. Meaning: no Debussy . No Chopin . No Mozart . No anything. Just them and the few music sheets from the play of Romeo and Juliet.
So it’s no surprise that Yoongi wanted to punch Seokjin’s face that day.
After the introduction of the clubs, Namjoon, the junior head of the production under the acting club, started explaining the setting for this years production. He explained that for the first semester, no matter which club they register to, they will work for the play production of the showcase. The clubs they choose would determine the tasks and participation they would do. Of course, the music club is in charge with the mood setting, giving a soothing and tragic feel. Seokjin initially planned to have a live orchestra below the stage. The dance club would most likely participate in the scenes. While the production club, well they do everything else behind.
Finishing the club recruitment event, everyone went back to their work rooms waiting for the recruited students to come. Yoongi advised his current members to practice the piece of Romeo and Juliet because they would be practicing it a lot because of its repeated appearance from Seokjin’s given script.
There was a table prepared outside the building of the practice rooms. Yoongi, Seokjin, Namjoon and Hoseok, the head of the dance club, were seated in a row with signages behind them indicating which club they belong to. Yoongi had music. Seokjin had acting. Namjoon had production. Hoseok had dancing. “Which club do you think freshmen will choose?” Seokjin asked. The rest of them just shrugged not wanting too many members to handle but not too little to need more.
A wave of students started to arrive by 2 o’clock, forming a line in different columns. Mostly were interested in the dance club making Hoseok the happiest because to him: the more the merrier. Namjoon experienced the same thing having new members who were a bit quiet, revealing that they prefer to do things while hidden from the crowd. Yoongi, on the other hand, is lacking in cellists because most of the newly recruited members were violinists and pianists. And Seokjin? as expected, kind of, the number of members he got wasn’t enough for the casting of the play.
By 5:30pm, they expected most of the students were already in their dorms or having dinner in the cafeteria. They tried to balance out the number of students with the number of recruited members but it seemed to be lacking three more.
“Should we wait?” Namjoon asked earning a nod from Hoseok.
“We’re in big trouble if the students in our department doesn’t balance with the recruits.” Yoongi explained, “and I really need more cellists.”
“I need a lot more!” Seokjin whined, “All of them will still undergo screening. What if no one is capable of being the lead?”
The rest just laughed at Seokjin’s random childish reaction before they saw three people walking towards the building. It was funny because Seokjin, Namjoon and Hoseok suddenly became serious, smiling at the arriving students, hoping that they would join their club.
“Are you sure about that Guk?” They heard one of them asked, “It’s going to be a lot of job. I thought you wanted to join music?”
Yoongi’s ear rang and focused in listening to their conversation from a far. It amused him how firm some freshmen were in their decision of club. The recruitment went by fast because all of the students were already prepared with the things they need in joining the club.
All four waited for the last three freshmen to go near them but Yoongi couldn’t help but stare at the familiar face of the blonde in the far right. Seokjin must’ve caught him staring because he leaned closer to him “He gives actor vibes.” Seokjin whispered to him, “You think he’s willing to act for the lead?”
Because of Yoongi’s nearsightedness, it took him a while before he realised who the blonde person was. “You haven’t even heard him talk.” Yoongi rebutted Seokjin’s habit of analysing a person. Still keeping an eye on the person, “For all you know, he could be interested in another club.” He added attempting to reduce Seokjin’s hopes because he already knew that the person would join the music club.
Seokjin raised an eyebrow at him, lightly hitting him under the table. “You’re one to talk. Why? Do you think he’ll join your club?”
Yoongi just glared at him, releasing a deep sigh, “He was that annoying music club member I talked to you about.” Seokjin’s mouth just formed an oh remembering the stories Yoongi once ranted about.
Despite knowing the person, Yoongi familiarised himself with the person. All Yoongi saw were the details of the person’s familiar physique from a far. The dark hair that turned out to be blonde now that matched his golden skin. White fabric shirt that outlined his perfectly shaped curves. Face structured by the gods with matching eyes that shine so bright despite the mysterious demeanor. There’s no way he wouldn’t be able to recognise that annoyingly perfect face– but still annoying.
“Hello!” One of them spoke. “This is the arts department building, right?”
They all nodded acknowledging their presence. Yoongi’s eyes met with the blonde man, as he raised an eyebrow at him but the other just avoided eye contact. “We were waiting for you.” Hoseok let out showing the application form to them, “Do you guys already have a club in mind?”
“Yeah!” The same person spoke, while the other one just nodded shyly. Shy freshman. “I’d like one of those please.” He asked getting the application form from Hoseok. Hoseok smiled joyfully knowing that Jimin had decided to join the dance club again.
“How ‘bout you?” Namjoon asked the raven haired boy, who seemed like a new face to them. “You might be a freshman,”
The boy nodded taking a form from Namjoon, “Production please.”
By that time, Seokjin had already lost hope hearing that two of them belonged to clubs that were not even close to the word acting . Yoongi’s information that the blonde was a music club member also ruined more of his hopes that at least one of them would be interested in his club.
Yoongi felt Seokjin nudge him under the table, with a suggestive smirk. Obviously, the blonde’s choice was already Yoongi’s club. Namjoon and Hoseok were eyeing the three of them, waiting which club the gorgeous looking man would join. Yoongi started acting coy, taking out a form for the person in front of him.
That was until he heard him speak, “I’d like to join acting please.”, to Seokjin.
Yoongi turned to look at him with a surprised expression. The younger only bit his lip shyly taking the application form from a shocked Seokjin, as well. Yoongi couldn’t help but speak up, taking the form himself, “Weren’t you in the music club last year?” He snarked, ” Kim Taehyung?”
Taehyung’s lips formed into a pout, taking the form from Yoongi’s hand, “There’s no policy that said students stay in the same club every year.”
“But you’re the only one playing the saxophone in the club!” Yoongi bit his tongue stopping himself from saying a specific sentence, “And you didn’t attend the summer club meetings. You missed a lot.”
“Well, take a hint!” Taehyung barked back, “I don’t want to be in the music club anymore. I’m an acting major. I just chose the music club last year because...” Taehyung suddenly trailed off mid-sentence, trying to choose the right words to say, “... because it was my hobby.”
“You didn’t knew the basics when you got in.” Yoongi said bluntly, raising an eyebrow, “I think it’s given you should join the music club to improve your skills.”
“I said I’ll join the acting club please .” Ignoring Yoongi, filling up the form that indicated acting club registration form .
Yoongi gave up and just glared at Taehyung. Taehyung felt like laughing at his face the moment Yoongi had accepted his defeat. The look on his face that progressed from shocked to furious was a sight Taehyung expected but seeing the older’s face after the short argument, he decided to quietly fill up the form.
But Seokjin couldn’t contain his happiness jumping from his seat, ignoring Yoongi’s bummed look. “Are you good at acting?” He couldn’t help but ask, Taehyung looked at him weirdly at his sudden action. “I don’t think I’ve seen you in the department before.”
“He’s amazing,” His friend answered for him, “Especially in period acting. He would suit Romeo and Juliet so much.”
The look on Seokjin’s face became brighter the longer he stares at Taehyung and the more information he gets out of him. “Jimin..” He shyly nudged his friend before turning back to look at Seokjin, “I’m average.”
“Average?” Jimin mocked, “Weren’t you one of the chosen ones in high school who got the results here a week before it officially came out?”
Seokjin gasped, “That happened to me too!” He said, “That means you’re really good!” He convinced him.
“Way to low-key boost your own ego, hyung.” Namjoon snickered and Seokjin just shot him a glare. “I mean, you’re really great, hyung-nim!” He quickly retreated.
“I’m sure you got into this university because of your talent and you should be proud of it.” Hoseok reassured the younger and Taehyung bowed in gratitude.
“Ah..” Taehyung hummed letting out an acknowledging smile, “Thank you, Hyung-nim.”
Hoseok simply nodded at him acting mature, letting the freshmen finish their forms.
Yoongi, on the other hand, kept the annoyed face while he played with his phone ignoring his friends and the students in front of them. His friends kept on asking questions to the three boys, interested to know more. But Yoongi wasn’t really interested. “Why did you just arrive now?” Namjoon couldn’t help but ask.
“Ah! We just arrived because our train got delayed.” Jeongguk, the dark haired freshman who joined production club whose name Yoongi learned just now, answered, “We weren’t able to attend the event but our friends told us about what happened and some information?”
“Oh?” Hoseok wondered, “Where are you guys from?”
Jimin, who joined the dance club, answered this time, “Me and Jeongguk are from Busan. Our Taehyungie is from Daegu.”
“It’s pretty obvious though,” Namjoon pointed out, “You still have thick accents.”
“Aren’t you from Daegu too?” Seokjin asked, tapping Yoongi and he nodded still not daring to look up from his phone to make Taehyung feel that he was really annoyed and disappointed .
Of course Yoongi knew that Taehyung was from Daegu too. Tolerating him in music club for a year, hearing his thick accent whine about how playing the saxophone is hard, Yoongi knows a lot about Taehyung by merely observing him.
After filling up their forms, enjoying the conversation that was going on with their fellow club members, “You guys going to your dorms?” Seokjin asked earning nods from the youngsters, “Us too, right?” Seokjin looked at Yoongi, to which Yoongi agreed, “Wanna go together?”
Yoongi couldn’t help but roll his eyes. He was feeling mixed emotions. He felt annoyed because of Taehyung’s attitude towards him. He wanted to curse Taehyung away from the acting club. But at the same time, he felt like he should be happy– happy for Seokjin. Seokjin had been whining about his lack of members and the moment he saw Taehyung’s features, he felt like he’s a special one and every time Seokjin gets a hunch about a person being a great actor, it always turned about to be true.
All of them walked back to the dorm together, conversing with one another. Of course the exchange of messages just revolved around the members and the head of the club they joined. In short, Yoongi walked alone surrounded by his own bubble, listening to the conversations his friends had.
Yoongi could hear Seokjin laugh out loud from his conversation with Taehyung and it was a relief. At least Seokjin’s mood is brighter than yesterday. (Though that doesn’t mean Yoongi isn’t annoyed about Taehyung moving)
Arriving at the dormitory complex, they parted into different buildings. Yoongi and Seokjin head back to their own room finally giving Yoongi a person to talk to. “Taehyungie is really something.” Seokjin spoke, laying on his bed. Yoongi could only nod foreseeing where this conversation was heading, “I can see a big future ahead of him.”
“What, are you a fortune teller now?” Yoongi joked dodging the pillow that flew towards him, “You say that all the time whenever you see pretty faces.” He mocked further.
“You’re just jealous he went to me and not you.” He replied sticking his tongue out, “You like him, don’t you?”
“No.” Yoongi responded too quickly. “You know how annoyed I am with him. And that’s too quick of a conclusion?”
“You’re annoyed with him.” Seokjin repeated making Yoongi nod, “But you were practically forcing him to register to the music club earlier.” He added putting on an annoying thinking face, “Does that make sense?”
“Shut up.” Yoongi blinked at Seokjin showing that he’s not interested in the subject. “He could get annoyingly loud, so good luck with that.”
“Oh, I like loud.” Seokjin teased, “Works best in the acting club, don’t you think?”
The nerve connecting Yoongi’s eyeball is so close to tearing apart because of the amount of times Yoongi rolled his eyes tonight. The amount of times he sighed could fill up an entire tank of oxygen for a scuba diver.
“Anyway,” Seokjin spoke up after not getting a decent response from Yoongi and only hearing a deep sigh from him as a reply, tired of their conversation. “I’m lacking in characters. I might need potential actors from your club.” He added pushing past the subject of Taehyung.
Yoongi only nodded before he started cleaning up for bed. Though it seemed like he was annoyed at Seokjin, he couldn’t stop thinking about his petty teasing. It was as if he knows Seokjin would push it further if he wasn’t considerate of Yoongi’s annoyed expression. But even if Seokjin stopped, Yoongi started overthinking the thought Seokjin had introduced to his brain.
In the past three years of Yoongi studying in this university, he never really showed interest in anyone. He was mostly focused on his music because it was his main purpose of leaving Daegu. Sometimes people would mistakenly think that him and Seokjin were dating because they were always together but Seokjin simply just had the same intention as him, making things work out between them as roommates. They perfectly balance each other’s personality making college feel tolerable.
But today, Seokjin decided to put a little weight to the balance on Yoongi. Pushing himself past his limits, Taehyung was once again clouding his mind.
And that was the second time Yoongi felt like punching Seokjin.
The third time he felt like punching Seokjin went by quicker than he expected.
After a busy first week of the new semester, all of the students in the art department gathered in the auditorium for the first ever meeting for the yearly showcase. Yoongi recalled the names of his three members who wanted to participate in the casting, to which Seokjin approved of after screening them.
By the time Seokjin started directing everyone with their task, Yoongi could already feel his own stress coming. Being Seokjin’s roommate for three years, he knows how riled up Seokjin gets every year for the showcase. Seeing that he’s the head of the entire showcase for this year, his roommate must’ve felt a heavier weight of responsibility making him more stressed.
“I think everyone knows the story of Romeo and Juliet, right?” Seokjin asked, his voice booming through the speakers, “For our play I want to switch it up a bit. I don’t want to settle with the actual characters.”
The room burst into whispers wondering what the hell Seokjin was talking about. Neither Yoongi nor Namjoon nor Hoseok know anything because the entire play was shouldered by Seokjin and the discussion about it was mainly between him and the dean. “Luckily, the dean approved of my idea.”
Students started to wonder where will his speech go and to say it frankly, no one expected the sentence Seokjin said after that.
“Our version of Romeo and Juliet would be a male-male pairing.” Seokjin finally announced, “It’s twenty-gay-teen. Let’s prove to people that it’s normal that girls love girls and boys love boys. That being transgender is normal and that even feeling nothing is still normal.”
The students went silent for a moment but later on cheered at the new and realistic idea proposed to them, “I know not everyone is part of the community but all we ask of is acceptance, for people to realise that we are normal people too.”
Yoongi couldn’t help but feel proud of the proposition of his roommate– and his roommate in general. Everyone gave him a round of applause and even a couple of standing ovation as he laid out more information about the play.
“For the casting, we already have enough people. Thank you to the cooperation of the music and dance club for the extra casts.” Seokjin read out from the information he prepared last night, “The main characters Juliet , Tybalt , Dave , Mercutio and Benvolio have been settled. But I still haven’t found the best Romeo. ”
Yoongi could see the passion in Seokjin’s eyes for wanting the play to be perfect for everybody, seeing that this could be a big push for everyone’s talent. “We all know that the art department is not exactly that big in terms of number of people. People would have to do more than one task for this stage. There would be a 60:40 ratio of tasks where 60% would perform and only 40% would be assigned backstage.”
“And as for Romeo,” Seokjin continued, “I would want everyone in this room, except for the secured casts to audition for the part. I know not everyone’s forte is acting but by doing this audition, we will be able to see your potential in the field of acting.” He explained, “One of the university’s objectives is to bring out the full potential of each student and I think this would help a lot.”
Everyone was surprised at the sudden announcement of auditions causing a buzzing sound of discussions within the students. “What the fuck is he saying?” Namjoon whispered from his side. “He already made me a cast and it’s still not enough?”
“You too?” Hoseok turned to Namjoon, “He made me Mercutio and I didn’t even know that person is a main character.”
“If I remember correctly, Mercutio died in the story,” Yoongi said making Namjoon laugh. “Seokjin reached his peak of chaos where he’s too stressed about the play. He doesn’t really trust the juniors that much.”
“Did he make you act?” Namjoon asked and Yoongi shook his head, “Huh. I heard he made Jeongguk and Jimin act too to support Taehyung.”
“For what?”
“Haven’t you heard?” Hoseok started, “Taehyung was a great actor and Seokjin made him the main character of Juliet, props to his blonde hair.”
Yoongi’s eyes widened at Hoseok surprised at how Seokjin was really taking the most out of Taehyung. “I think Seokjin just wanted to be Romeo, that’s why it’s like that.” Yoongi commented pushing off the idea of auditioning.
“But hyung, you’re good in acting right?” Namjoon complimented, “You acted as an extra in the play last year because of Seokjin. You might have a shot at this.”
Hoseok stifled a quiet laugh, “I think our hyung here hates Taehyungie. There’s no way he’ll try out for Romeo.”
“How many bets Seokjin will be Romeo?” Yoongi suggested knowing his roommate’s passion for acting.
Acting is everything to Seokjin. It’s all Yoongi could think of if you ask about his roommate. He saw how he grew within the field in the past three years and as a roommate, Yoongi always supported him no matter what. He attended most of his plays, small or big. He helped in the production and even acted in some just to fill up a spot so Seokjin wouldn’t be too stressed.
There were times that Seokjin returned the support to Yoongi by going to a couple of his performances outside the campus. He was always there whenever Yoongi would breakdown from the pressure he feels because of his unfinished music sheets. Yoongi was more than grateful for having Seokjin as a friend and as a roommate. And sometimes when you are grateful, you would do everything for that person.
Deep inside of Yoongi, he knows Seokjin is interested in being the main character. It’s his last year and of course he would want the spotlight. But he had to deal with the responsibilities of being the head constricting him from bringing out his full potential right before he graduates college.
Yoongi knew he had to do something.
After the first meeting, the students started to gather around the acting club room, auditioning for the spot of Romeo. Some of them just tried to get it over with as requested by Seokjin. The others, on the other hand, were really persistent acting everything out for the exposure.
Yoongi stood outside the room watching different people enter and leave. Luckily, the music room was right across the acting room allowing Yoongi to see the commotion in the acting room. He left his members for a while to practice, wanting to pass by Seokjin to talk to him.
But instead of Seokjin, he saw someone else. “Ah.. Yoongi hyung, you’re going to audition?” Taehyung spoke with a bottle of water in hand.
Yoongi could only glare at Taehyung for his attempt of talking to him. “Me?” He mockingly asked, “You’re asking me if I’m going to audition?”
In all fairness, Yoongi was asking an honest question. He wasn’t sure whether the kid was mocking him, clearly not over his outburst of attempt to claim him back to the music club or if he was really asking if Yoongi would audition.
“I think I asked clearly,” Taehyung raised an eyebrow, “Is the music prodigy’s hearing a little weak now?”
Oh . “A little dirty, s’all,” Yoongi breathed out pretending to clean his ears then proceeded to clenching his fists tight and ready for another outburst. “How about you, my hobby is playing the saxophone but I have weak lungs so I can’t blow it well ?”
“In my defense, you play the piano.” Taehyung pointed out, “You use your fingers, I use my mouth. Sounds tiring, doesn’t it?”
“Well, if you don’t know how to blow properly, then why are you playing it?” Yoongi pushed, “Such a waste of money if it’s not being used.”
“Oh really?” Taehyung laughed in a mocking tone, “I think I can use my mouth in many other ways than blowing a saxophone.”
And Yoongi isn’t dumb. He knows exactly what Taehyung was implying and before he could even mouth an answer, they both heard Seokjin calling Taehyung from the room, making Taehyung’s lips perk up into a smirk before walking back to the room.
It was a clear message– too clear of an innuendo to Yoongi.
He watched as Taehyung looked back once again, eyes meeting with his— the smirk still painted on his lips, before opening the door. When he got inside, Seokjin saw Yoongi by the door and watched him slowly disappear as it closed.
Even if Yoongi was in charge in arranging the sound of the orchestra, his busy mind could only focus on his situation alone. The rest of the day was a mess and his members could notice it too. Yoongi kept on giving the wrong music sheets, orchestrating too fast that it made the members question him if he was alright.
He wasn’t even annoyed anymore.
He was bothered.
When he got back to his room, Seokjin was already there with thick rimmed glasses, focusing on the content of his laptop. He didn’t even acknowledge Yoongi’s arrival at first, continuing his project for a class. The silence continued until Seokjin felt that something was up, “You didn’t audition today.” He tried to converse. “I was waiting for you.”
“Why should I? I’m too busy with the music arrangement,” He mumbled, scrolling through his phone. Not even giving Seokjin a glance. “I already gave you three members. Are they not enough?”
“What are you so annoyed about?” Seokjin rebutted, “I’m just joking.”
“Jokes are supposed to be funny.” Yoongi said bluntly, “This is not funny.”
Seokjin threw a pillow right at Yoongi’s phone. He glared at Seokjin but Seokjin just gave him a knowing look. “I don’t know if you’re mad at me because of the Taehyung situation but–”
“It’s not about that.” Yoongi cut him off. “Taehyung is just getting on my nerves lately even after leaving the music club. I should be happy because he’s gone but him being on the acting club just made me more annoyed.”
“I don’t understand why you hate him so much.” Seokjin sighed going back to his own work before Yoongi arrived. “You’re really acting weird.”
It’s not that Yoongi hates Taehyung. Hate is such a strong word to use. You could say Yoongi simply dislikes Taehyung or despises ? Any word that’s less stronger than hate. Yoongi just can’t handle being around Taehyung these days. He can’t handle seeing his face.
At first it wasn’t much of a bother. When Yoongi first met Taehyung, it was during the registration for clubs. Since last year, Yoongi was already designated in the registration area, meeting all of the new members.
Last year, Taehyung was still a freshman— but it didn’t seem like any normal freshman when he approached him.
“Oh! Music club!” Yoongi heard someone exclaim from afar, watching a brunette boy literally run towards his table making it shake. “I’d like to sign up please!”
“H-Hello?” He stammered in surprise, “Uhm…. What instrument?”
“Do you accept saxophone?” The younger asked, “I like playing the saxophone. It’s my hobby.” Yoongi was left in awe, handing the wind instrument form to the freshman. “I’m also good with the piano.” The freshman showed off his long fingers suited for both playing the saxophone and the keys.
“I’ll acknowledge in the evaluation.” Yoongi simply responded, not really feeling the overly joyed and boastful sounding freshman. “ Taehyung .” He read the name on the form.
Most of the time members who join the music club were really musically inclined. They can perform famous musical pieces and even originals that they composed.
Or that’s what Yoongi thought.
Because when he saw the evaluation performance of Taehyung, everyone in the room wasn’t sure if he was in the right club. Though organisations like theirs was created to find room for improvement, Taehyung seemed like a lost cause.
Sure, he can make a sound from the saxophone. But the beat sounded more like a morse code than a smooth tone. His breathing wasn’t completely stable making the entire performance weak and awful.
And when Yoongi thought it was the last of Taehyung, “Yoongi.” Hyun, the head of the club called him, “Can you watch over Taehyung?” Yoongi looked at Hyun thinking, Is he being serious right now?
But despite the looks he threw at his senior, Hyun pushed him towards the struggling freshman, “Taehyungie-freshman.” Hyun spoke catching his attention, “This is Yoongi. He’s my assistant and if you need help, you can call him.”
“Ah! Hyung-nim,” Taehyung bowed at Hyun, “Thank you so much for your concern.”
“No problem.” He stifled an awkward laugh, “I’ll leave you two now.” He said tapping Yoongi’s shoulder before moving away to observe the serious and better performing members of the club.
Yoongi saw Taehyung’s bright and innocent eyes looking straight at him, eyelashes fluttering with an innocent smile, “You know how to play the saxophone, Hyung-nim?”
“Yeah,” He said, taking the extra saxophone at the side, remembering that he had cleaned that before the session started today. “You play like this.” He explained showing off the proper positioning of his fingers against the instrument before blowing to produce a sound of the chords he pressed.
Taehyung looked at him with amusement, copying how Yoongi gripped the instrument at hand, “Like this?” He asked before putting the instrument closer to his lips, blowing but no sound came out, “Huh?”
Yoongi checked the way Taehyung took the mouth of the instrument, seemed about right and so was the positioning of his fingers. “Bite the mouthpiece before pursing your lips.” He explained watching Taehyung’s lips envelop the mouthpiece.
“I just blow it like a candle, right?” Taehyung asked for confirmation before he tried again. There was a sound but it was faint and out of tune.
They had to try it again and again, leaving Yoongi with Taehyung for more than an hour.
It progressed from an inconsistent beat to a smooth one. He was able to play a few more chords but his breathing always toned down by the middle part of the music sheet, “Can’t you hold your breath?” Yoongi asked to which Taehyung was quick to shake his head.
“My lungs are weak.” He shyly responded putting a hand on his chest. “Not everyone is really blessed with fully working lungs.”
And that was the beginning of Yoongi’s music club year with Taehyung. Every music club meeting during their preparation for the festival, Yoongi was always stuck with him trying to get him to at least play an entire piece for the performance. It took him awhile to get the younger play it smoothly.
One day, Yoongi caught up on with what Taehyung was doing. That day, Yoongi was an hour late to practice without any notice. His professor decided to extend the class and Yoongi didn’t really mind lessening the time with Taehyung. At least he wouldn’t really spend too much time controlling his temper. It wouldn’t exhaust him too much.
But what Yoongi didn’t expect was to see Taehyung playing the saxophone so beautifully, hitting every note with the perfect blow. He swayed with a perfect posture as he played along to the piano accompaniment of another music club member.
Yoongi thought it was all his doing. That he helped him become better and play better. All the patient days he had was worth seeing Taehyung play perfectly. He felt so great about himself that he was able to help Taehyung.
But he didn’t notice it wasn’t the piece they practiced.
Listening to Taehyung’s playing was definitely music to Yoongi’s ears. He loved the way the notes transitioned matching with the base sound of the piano. The ascending notes reaching its crescendo brought goosebumps to Yoongi’s entire body, wishing it was him who was playing the piano to the beautiful sound of Taehyung’s saxophone. Taehyung relaxes a little bit as the tempo started to decrease finally reaching the end of the piece.
The people inside the room applauded the joint performance and Yoongi thought it was his cue to get inside.
Silence.
“Oh?” Yoongi wondered, analysing everyone’s faces who suddenly went back to their own businesses, “What happened?”
Bogum, the member who was playing the piano to Taehyung’s saxophone, just shrugged at him moving away from the piano seat that he occupies during sessions. “I just played a couple of pieces on the piano.” He bluntly said before mumbling a small bye to Taehyung.
Watching the oddly acting member go back to his original station, Yoongi turned to Taehyung who was already looking at him with a big smile, “Hyung-nim!” He joyfully greeted, “I thought you wouldn’t arrive.”
“My professor extended the class…” He trailed of still confused by the sudden change of atmosphere from what he had seen from outside. “Did you practice well?”
Taehyung tilted his head pointing out a staff from the music sheet, “I still couldn’t follow the tempo of this part.”
He nodded giving a signal to the younger to play that said part, playing the proper beats. But the moment Taehyung started blowing the saxophone, it was a complete mess. It didn’t match the timing and he jumped on some notes. “There was a rest on the third measure.” He explained repeating the same staff.
But Taehyung never got it right in front of him.
Yoongi started to get suspicious of the younger’s act and decided to arrive late every session. He would always catch him playing the amazingly with that Bogum member. He even played so beautifully during the festival but Yoongi never really got praised for doing his job.
Yoongi isn’t stupid to not realise that Taehyung was only pretending to suck in playing the saxophone. He never really called him out for it because it would be a big waste of his energy so he let it be. Taehyung never caught on with his act of ignorance as he, himself, continued to act stupid making Yoongi vent all of his anger out on Seokjin.
“Does he really think I’m dumb to not notice that he can play? That he’s an amazing musician?” Yoongi grunted squishing the stress ball Seokjin gave him, “He’s really out there acting all innocent and stupid.”
“You say the same things every week.” Seokjin sighed, “And I always respond the same thing but you never listen.”
“How would I know why he’s been pretending?” Yoongi rebutted, “All he does is act brazen with his mistakes.”
“Don’t you think he’s just trying to get your attention?” Seokjin suggested, figuring the situation out from Yoongi’s anger, “Maybe he likes you?”
Yoongi huffed at the idea, “I don’t think he’s that childish.”
“He obviously likes the attention you’re giving him.” Seokjin pushed, “That’s why he kept on doing it.”
“I was only asked to do it.”
“But you’re stubborn. If you don’t like what you’re doing, you stop.”
“So?”
“Maybe you like him.”
The conversation rolled back to Yoongi’s head after a year.
But thinking about how Seokjin isn’t really the type to remember the exact details of what he said, it bothered him how the same Seokjin from different times concluded one thing from Yoongi’s anger: that maybe he likes Taehyung that why he’s always annoyed at him which Yoongi doesn’t really see the correlation to.
Like, why would you like someone who annoys the living shit out of you?
Why would you like someone who makes you want to pull all of your hair out?
Why would you like someone whose existence you wish to be gone?
Why would Yoongi like Taehyung when he dislikes him so much?
Yoongi could only sigh as he opened the grand piano in the middle of the music room, late at night. Every practice, Yoongi was always too busy helping his members to accompany each other’s instruments forming one sound. He needed to make sure that the cello wouldn’t over power the violin. Or the tubas wouldn’t be louder than the trumpets. He should give each instrument a shining moment at the perfect timing so the scouts would acknowledge them.
Because of his own responsibility with the orchestra, he wasn’t able to practice the pieces himself. Yoongi isn’t too perfect to be able to perform well a piece. They have a lot of musical pieces to practice especially during the scenes and Yoongi was in charge with the base accompaniment that everyone would follow.
Practicing the music sheets sprawled on top of the piano, he indulged himself with the sound he produced by pressing the keys. Following the tick of the metronome to perfectly follow the beat, he started picking up the speed of the notes.
He could feel his own body become heavier as the tempo gets faster, running towards the peak of the notes in front of him. Closing his eyes, he started to feel more of the composition, imagining himself in Romeo and Juliet’s situation.
That’s what he does to get the perfect feel to every composition he plays. Yoongi isn’t the type to simply learn about the sheet music and play it. He researches about the composer and attempts to put himself in the composer’s shoes, feeling that he was the one wrote it giving justice to piece every time he plays it.
The feeling of Romeo and Juliet’s situation was somewhat familiar to him. The sound suddenly felt too personal, encapsulating himself to the emotion of the tragic feeling of falling in love with someone you are forced to hate. Yoongi felt the bubble of emotion close at him reaching the climax of the piece as his fingers travel farther from each other reaching for the right notes to play, picturing the sadness Romeo must’ve felt finding out Juliet is dead.
And as he pressed on the final set of black and white keys, he breathed out the heavy feeling from his chest.
Still breathless, he heard a faint clap coming from the door. “That was a wild ride.” Hoseok commented, “I’m guessing Act 5, Scene 3?” Yoongi didn’t even notice Hoseok arrive, too into his own playing. He looked at the sheet music and it read the same stage Hoseok was talking about.
“Who would’ve thought the miscommunications lead to their death.” Yoongi could only say. “Maybe if the message to Romeo indicated that the potion would only put Juliet to sleep, he wouldn’t be that stupid to kill himself.”
Hoseok laughed at Yoongi’s attempt to apprehend the play, “They didn’t really have phones at that time, for starters.”
“What are you doing here?” Yoongi asked, finding the next sheet music to practice.
“Memorising lines as Mercutio.” He answered, showing the rolled script from his back pocket, “I’m Romeo’s best buddy. Gonna wake up his stupid brain and hit him with reality.”
Yoongi chuckled at his friend’s silly response before teasing, “You’d really do anything for Seokjin, huh?”
“We’re the heads of the clubs and the least we could do is help him with this.” Hoseok said walking towards Yoongi’s seat, “He already planned out everything. All we did was turn it to a reality.”
Before the dean announced the collaboration, Yoongi would see Seokjin stressing himself out all summer. He would most likely be out than inside their dorm making Yoongi realise that Seokjin did most of the job in every department of this entire play. He revised the script into a more comprehensive story, gave the production crew the outline of the set and effects he thinks would be the best. Tried to search the musical pieces of the actual play and gave it to Yoongi. He explored a lot of for this play that was far out of his field just to make this dream play of his a reality.
Hoseok started playing with the keys in front of him, recalling the piece they practiced during a scene he was in. “I realised last year’s festival wasn’t too much for us, we still had time to hang out.”
Yoongi could only acknowledge the fact that they were all given a heavier responsibility as heads of the clubs. They didn’t notice it as much back then because they were mere members who just follows instructions. Now, they were at the position of the people who gave instructions.
Slamming his hands on the key putting his playing to a halt, Hoseok turned to Yoongi, “How are you, Yoongi?” He asked with pure curiosity. “I know everybody is stressed but you seemed to be bothered these past few weeks.”
Yoongi only shrugged at his friend, playing the piano himself, “I guess everything is just too much lately.”
Hoseok gave him a knowing look. The look of comfort that he could tell him anything.
Yoongi hated that look.He hated the fact that other than Seokjin, Hoseok could see right through him. Whenever they would hang out and Yoongi wasn’t in the unbothered state, Hoseok would always be the one to crack a joke and make him loosen up. Hoseok would be glancing at him the entire time to see if he contracted the tension a little bit.
He figured out what Hoseok learned about him and decided to loosen up a bit whenever he asks him if he is doing fine. Just like right now, how his perfect playing posture suddenly slouched to show Hoseok nothing was bothering him too much.
Hoseok understood Yoongi’s action and simply patted his back smiling brightly at him, “Whatever’s bothering you will not last long. It will eventually end so don’t overwork yourself.” He said attempting to give a piece of advice to his friend. “Live the day normally and let life answer things for you.”
And Hoseok’s somewhat comforting words were enough for Yoongi to stop thinking about Taehyung for the night.
When Yoongi got back to their dorms, he saw that Seokjin was still awake staring at what seemed like a script. “Still busy?” Yoongi asked his roommate, whose eyes seemed like it didn’t get a wink of sleep in the past week.
“You think Hyungsik can handle being Romeo?” Seokjin started to rambled analysing the paper at hand. “He was supposed to be King Montague but maybe I can have Seojoon for that role instead. He seems like the best candidate for it anyway or maybe Minho could take the role because he has this antagonist aura in him? But then again Seojoon read his lines better during a test run earlier. What do you think?”
Yoongi shook his head, walking towards Seokjin to get a grip of his wide shoulders to calm him down. He looked down at Seokjin,“What I think is that you shouldn’t stress too much about the roles and believe in the cast you have now.”
“But Romeo–”
“The person you trust to play as Romeo is the person whom I think would do the best in playing Romeo.” Yoongi cut him off before he could say anything, “It’s you.”
Seokjin’s eyes widened at Yoongi’s suggestion before looking down to shake his head, “I can’t do that.”
“Look at me.” Yoongi demanded, pushing his head to face him, “You’ve done a lot for this play to happen. You went through all the measures of talking to the dean just to make it work.” He started to explain, “I understand you feel like you’re the director of this entire play that’s why you shouldn’t act– but you’re not majoring in directing. You’re an acting major and what you do is act not direct. Knowing you did all of these, there’s no way you never felt the want of being Romeo.” Getting to the point, Yoongi stared right at Seokjin’s eyes before saying, “If there is anyone deserving to be Romeo, it would be you.”
Seokjin’s eyes started to form tears, pulling his roommate close to envelop him into a tight hug. “I needed to hear that.” He choked a sob against Yoongi’s stomach.
“I know.” Yoongi said cooly, rubbing the back of his roommate. “I’m the best.” He added attempting to light up the mood.
♡
Everyone was pleased when Seokjin had announced that he would be acting as Romeo. Just as Yoongi thought, everyone believed in him because no one knows the play well more than him.
Finally having a Romeo, the practices officially started. The cast stayed inside the acting club’s spacious room with the dance club members who will have stages. Yoongi made his own club stay inside the music room for soundproof walls, finally orchestrating each instrument with each other to have the perfect harmony. The production club stayed at the auditorium setting up the stage and the different transitions of the scenes.
With the addition of the college load, they weren’t really able to practice as much as they wanted. Instead of memorising the music sheet, Yoongi was memorising the timeline of the different histories in the Baroque period in music. He had to memorise names like Bach , Vivaldi, and Handle . Not forgetting the different concertos and learning them by sound to be able to name them.
Sometimes, Seokjin would ask for help from Yoongi to read out a few scenes so when Seokjin would meet up with the main cast, his acting would be above as expected since they entrusted him with such a role.
Yoongi coughed, attempting to read out the lines with the same amount of emotions Seokjin is giving, “ Oh Romeo, Romeo! wherefore art thou Romeo? Deny thy father and refuse thy name. For true love was felt, without knowing thy name. And no longer will I be a Capulet. ”
“Shall I hear more or shall I speak at this?” Seokjin raised an eyebrow, keeping his sight at Yoongi.
He hummed, noticing the lack of feel to Seokjin’s words, “I think you should sound more excited.” He suggested, “Imagine hearing Hoseok talk about you to Namjoon and you did not expect to hear how great you sound in Hoseok’s brain.” Yoongi decided to tease.
Seokjin rolled his eyes at the inclusion of his personal life. “Wow, Hyung-nim!” He mocked in response, “You’re so good maybe you should be Romeo instead!”
“Don’t push it.” Yoongi glared at Seokjin. “You always say that when you ask for help and I’m just giving honest opinions.”
Seokjin continued to make a face at Yoongi while they continue practicing. So far, they were able to practice well and Yoongi can confirm that Seokjin is really the perfect Romeo– making the sentence seem redundant because Romeo and perfect are closely similar in the books.
Despite Seokjin claiming the role of Romeo, his responsibility over the entire play did not exactly end. In fact, taking the role doubled his responsibility but Seokjin never felt the pressure because Yoongi was always there.
Like right now.
In the past few days, the orchestra was able to perfect all of the pieces they need to play. Most of their practices consisted of them just playing it over and over again even though it already sounds the best. They were able to lay it out during the stage practices to make the length of the piece fit to the scenes.
Unfortunately in yesterday’s stage practice, Taehyung wasn’t around to practice with Seokjin. He asked permission that he would be out the entire day to settle something for his part time job. Of course, Seokjin allowed him and Yoongi thought it would end there.
But it didn’t. Taehyung personally asked Seokjin if they could have a special practice to fit the timing of the music in a specific scene because he would start and end the scene.
So now, Yoongi is in the music room with Seokjin and Taehyung who are practicing their lines while Yoongi plays the simple instrumental for the scene that would give them the proper timing.
“You guys are practicing scene 5?” Yoongi asked looking for the music sheet as Seokjin nodded, “Oh this one.” He could only say after figuring out which scene it was for.
In the script, it said to play some classical jazz music for dancing. Yoongi started playing with the keys playing a bright song before Seokjin and Taehyung started exchanging lines. There were a lot of people in that scene so they both had to improvise which person will pretend to be that cast before they move on to their actual characters.
When Seokjin said his last line, the music slowly descended and Yoongi started playing the second piece for the main part in that scene.
Yoongi started to proceed to an awkward situation, watching the two act in love in front of him while he plays a slow yet soft tune as the star crossed lovers met for the first time.
They moved along the music, circling around the grand piano– eyes locked with each other. Seokjin’s eyes showed utmost love while Taehyung tries to hide his smile, loving the feeling of someone looking at him with so much love. “It’s you.” Seokjin finally started the script, wrapping his arms around Taehyung.
“Me?” Taehyung responded turning around to face Seokjin, “What do you mean?”
Yoongi noticed Seokjin’s gaze moved from Taehyung’s eyes to his lips. Yoongi squinted, unsure whether this is a scene where he should be in. Nonetheless, he continued to play the piano focusing on the music sheet in front of him even though he has it memorised.
“Lips perfectly made for mine. Love seen in dreams but is real and here in front of me now.” Seokjin continued, thumbing the corner of Taehyung’s lips that formed into a pout.
“Lips are made to speak and not touch another’s.” Taehyung bit his lip in contrast to what he had said.
Yoongi could feel the tension growing inside the room before the script peeked at him, reading (a quick peck on the lips). His eyes widened, unaware that Taehyung and Seokjin will actually kiss in the play as he read more of that word in the next paragraphs. He could feel the insides of him get annoyed at the inconsiderate people with him.
Slamming the black and white keys, Seokjin and Taehyung jumped in surprise moving away from each other, finally easing the tension Yoongi felt.
“What was that?” Seokjin asked with his hand on top of his chest that seemed to be beating too fast from the shock.
Taehyung eyed Yoongi who was still looking down at the keys, unsure of what to say. “Hyung-nim?” He called out.
“You will kiss?” Yoongi asked innocently.
It’s not that Yoongi minds that Seokjin and Taehyung will kiss. He realised that they should at least have the liberty to inform Yoongi before getting on with it. That’s why he had to stop them before their lips even connect with each other.
Seokjin raised an eyebrow at him with a small smirk forming on his lips, “Is there a problem with that, Yoongi?”
He returned the look Seokjin had given him, scoffing at him, “I’m just saying it’s weird because I’m here.”
“There’s nothing wrong with kissing, hyung-nim.” Taehyung said too cockily, “We’re just acting. I didn’t know you were affected by it.”
Acting, my ass. Yoongi thought rolling his eyes at Taehyung who he did not even acknowledge ever since they started practicing. Waving them off, he heard Taehyung chuckle before they started off the scene once again forgetting Yoongi’s interruption.
They did the scene again circling around the piano as Yoongi played the same notes as earlier. He could see Taehyung giving him short glances as he bore his eyes at him with a glare, silently asking him to stop.
“It’s you.” Seokjin restarted the scene, pulling Taehyung towards him again.
This time, Taehyung was facing Yoongi when Seokjin wrapped an arm around him. He gave him the same cocky look from earlier before he turned around to face Seokjin to continue the scene.
Yoongi could only sigh.
“Lips are made to speak and not touch another’s.” Taehyung lowly spoke before Seokjin went in and gave him a quick peck on the lips.
Taehyung’s eyes widened acting to be shocked but wrapped his hand around Seokjin’s nape pulling him closer to reattach their lips once again. That was when they started to make out in front of Yoongi.
As much as Yoongi tried to look away and focus on the music sheet in front of him, he could still hear the soft moans coming out from, he guesses , Taehyung as they kiss each other. Yoongi couldn’t help but notice the way Seokjin’s figure envelops Taehyung’s petite looking self. He could see how Taehyung was trying to push himself closer to Seokjin as the other’s hands were wrapped around his small waist.
He also noticed Seokjin’s eyes were fully shut, probably trying to grasp the mood of the scene. But when he looked at Taehyung’s eyes, he slammed the keys once again surprised to lock eyes with him.
Good thing it was part of the script.
Yoongi stopped playing because the sweet scene was over. Finally pulling away from each other, Taehyung pretended to pull Seokjin somewhere because someone caught them, as stated in the script. But before they could even start with the next set of lines, Seokjin pulled him closer again reattaching their lips.
Yoongi watched them make out again.
Fucking Romeo and his love for Juliet.
A week after their practice, Yoongi felt like he needed to bleach his eyes from what he had witnessed. The images of Seokjin and Taehyung making out inside the music room was already too much but Seokjin kept on mentioning it to Yoongi asking if he did fine.
And it was too unfair for him because when they had another stage practice for that scene, they never really kissed in front of everyone. Though everyone was anticipating it and telling them that they should at least try, Taehyung’s words angered Yoongi so much as he said, “We’ll just save the real kiss for the festival.” with his eyes looking straight at Yoongi, lips formed with a smirk.
Taehyung really knows how to get into Yoongi’s nerves and it annoys him so much that Seokjin is becoming an acquaintance to it.
“Seokjin really did that?” Hoseok asked after listening to Yoongi’s outburst at the café where he had invited him.
Yoongi nodded furiously, pulling his hair to show how annoyed he is. “I’m sorry you had to know that Seok. But I really couldn’t handle Taehyung’s shit anymore. I don’t know why he keeps on pulling this acts when I heard that he’s actually a great person.”
“It’s just acting, Yoongi.” Hoseok shrugged off, “You shouldn’t be too affected by it.” He said to Yoongi but definitely more to himself. “I mean, if you really think that Taehyung is annoying you on purpose, then why not confront him?”
“Because he would pretend to act dumb and say I didn’t know you were affected by it.” He said mocking Taehyung’s voice from last week when he claimed that they were only acting. “If only you saw the way he pulled Seokjin! The way he acted was so great he made it seem like he really wanted me to see it.”
Hoseok mumbled a small oh before he gave Yoongi a weird look. “I think I can see where this is going.”
“What do you mean?”
“You’ve seen Seokjin kiss a lot of people before, right?” Hoseok asked confirming his own thoughts.
Yoongi nodded remembering that scarring time that Seokjin brought home a date to their dorm late at night, making out with him in the dark thinking that Yoongi was asleep. But he had to pretend he was asleep, facing the wall of their room as he heard moans coming from the other side of the room. Seokjin apologised though because he didn’t know Yoongi was home. To his defense, Yoongi said he would be staying with a friend that night that’s why he brought his date home.
So it was forgiven and forgotten.
“What about it?” He asked, confused where Hoseok was going.
“Don’t you think the reason why you’re furious…” Hoseok trailed off unsure whether he should say it or not, “Is because you’re jealous?”
Yoongi furrowed his brows, tilting his head in disbelief, “Seok, I don’t like Seokjin that way.” He cleared out, thinking maybe people still think something is going on between them.
“I’m not saying it’s Seokjin.” Hoseok muttered, “Whenever we’re together you always talk about how annoyed you are with Taehyung.”
Yoongi sighed, feeling as if he is being misunderstood again. “What’s your point?”
“I think Taehyung is just trying to get your attention by annoying you.” Hoseok stated, “Which didn’t work because he annoyed the living shit out of you.”
“Well he has all of my attention now.” Yoongi groaned, “His existence annoys me now.”
“And now that he got your attention,” Hoseok continued, ”All you do is talk about him but you always end up saying something good about him.”
“What do you mean?”
“Whenever he annoys you, you always reason out how he should stop acting like that with you. Then you end up saying that he doesn’t need to act because you think he’s actually a cool person.” Hoseok tried to explain. “You compliment him just like how you said he was a great actor not too long ago.”
“I don’t like where this is going.” Yoongi muttered tapping his hand on table as Hoseok continued.
“I think he really did kiss Seokjin to annoy you.” Hoseok suggested, “And it worked because you’re furious about it– but not because he did it to annoy you. But he actually kissed Seokjin in front of you.”
“I still don’t get it.”
“You saw Seokjin kiss other people before and you didn’t mind.” He stated. “But why are you so annoyed when he kissed Taehyung? Is it because you like Tae?” Hoseok concluded leaving Yoongi fazed.
He already heard that line too many times from Seokjin and to hear it from another person again made him crazy.
Yoongi cannot believe how his friends mind’s works. How could people even associate something close to hate with love? How is being annoyed at someone even close to liking someone? No matter how many times Yoongi thinks about it, he really couldn’t find the connection with the two.
Granted that when Yoongi first saw Taehyung, he thought he was really handsome. He really thought that he has this potential in playing instruments. But the moment he realised he wasn’t that good, he decided to just let it be.
But when fate played with him and pushed him back to Taehyung to teach, he thought maybe it was a sign that Yoongi should be nicer to people. And he tried. He tried to help Taehyung but it annoyed him so much that the simplest instructions, he couldn’t follow.
Yoongi’s patience was tested too much when he found out Taehyung could play properly he just decided to ignore it and concluded with his dislike towards Taehyung.
He didn’t want to hate him but it was his only way of not caring that much about him. Whenever Yoongi hated people, he would always end up ignoring them– pretending they don’t exist.
That was when Yoongi realised that in a span of a year attending the music club sessions, teaching Taehyung something he already knew , not once did Yoongi ignored him. Sure, maybe he was cold towards him but he never fully shut him out.
He could recall times when Taehyung showed that he actually learned something from Yoongi whenever he would play the accompaniment to Taehyung’s saxophone. Both of them enjoyed those times and it remained in Yoongi’s mind. Maybe that’s why when he found out that Taehyung would be moving to another club, he got annoyed because he expected to have more enjoyable sessions with him– to spend more time with him.
Ah fuck.
He remembered himself silently hoping that Seokjin and Taehyung wouldn’t actually practice the kiss in front of him. Remembering to be honest to himself, he hated seeing Taehyung kiss someone else but he proceeded with thinking he just hated Taehyung in general.
And that’s when it hit Yoongi.
All his life, he forced himself to believe that he hates the way Taehyung was acting towards him– that he hated Taehyung. But not once did he attempt to talk to him about it which made the situation the way it is now.
He always thought that Seokjin and Hoseok were just teasing him that maybe he likes Taehyung because all he did was talk about how annoyed he was with him.
But he never realised that sometimes love hides behind hate.
He never realised it until now.
As much as Yoongi tried not to overthink about the epiphany he had after talking to Hoseok, his actions decided to do otherwise and avoid Taehyung.
Seokjin and Taehyung’s practice with Yoongi became more frequent but unlike last time, Yoongi didn’t really talk that much and let the two boys practice their scenes giving each other advice. Seokjin didn’t really noticed that Yoongi was acting different all of a sudden. Just like him, he thought maybe he was stressed with the festival getting closer each day.
But Taehyung noticed and he could tell it wasn’t because he was stressed.
In the middle of the day of a regular practice, Seokjin announced a lunch break where Namjoon decided to invite his circle of friends out for lunch. Taehyung clung onto Jimin, who was all sweaty after doing his scene as Tybalt. “Hyung, where are you treating us?” Jimin teasingly asked Namjoon who was busy looking for the new pizza parlour near the university. “Isn’t your birthday coming up?”
“Isn’t Guk’s birthday coming first?” Taehyung asked seeing Jeongguk shoot him a glare.
“I’ll pay!” Seokjin announced, rolling his eyes because he could foresee an argument coming, “Take this as a thank you for doing me a big favour in this play.”
Everyone else cheered and Taehyung noticed Yoongi’s smile as he tapped his roommates shoulders, clinging onto him.
Taehyung admired how close Yoongi and Seokjin were. Sometimes he wished he was Seokjin to be that close to Yoongi without even trying.
To be frank, Taehyung might’ve been one of those people who thought Yoongi and Seokjin were dating before he even knew them personally. He would usually hear stories from his seniors how Seokjin would always be there for Yoongi and how Yoongi would do the same.
Arriving at the restaurant, they ordered a large pizza and two plates of pasta to share. They sat there sharing about the current progress of the play because the festival is only a month away after starting almost two months ago.
“The administration have been calling me in and out for updates with the expenditures. They don’t believe me that the set up for the mansion costed around 200,000 KRW. Is this the first time they lent money for a play?” Namjoon asked Seokjin to which Seokjin nodded.
“I told you, the acting club doesn’t get much attention.” He sadly said, “This is really a first and as much as possible I want it to be perfect so our efforts and money won’t be put to waste.”
By the time the food arrived, they all munched down the pizza disregarding how many slices there were. “This tastes really good!” Jimin complimented taking another slice, giving a big thumbs up to Namjoon who recommended the place.
“Hey!” Jeongguk exclaimed at Jimin, ”Haven’t you eaten three slices already?”
“You did too!” Jimin argued back causing chaos on the table.
Taehyung rolled his eyes at his friends who doesn’t have any manners in front of their seniors, “I’m gonna eat that.” He said casually taking the last piece that Jimin attempted to eat.
When he was about to get the last slice, someone else’s fork held the pizza down the plate. “No, I will.” Yoongi said pushing Taehyung’s hand away from the pizza and eating it making the three of them look at him while he ate it. “I only ate a piece. This is only my second.” He bluntly continued while chewing, “Instead of arguing on the table, I think all of you should just give it to me.”
Hoseok tried to fight back his laugh, looking at their juniors faces who was looking down on their plates in humiliation, acting too comfortable around their seniors. But they didn’t really mind. It was just funny to see Yoongi suddenly talk, shutting all of them down.
But that wasn’t what Taehyung thought.
“He definitely hates me for real.” Taehyung whined backstage after they got back from their break. “This is your fault!” He continued to blame his friend.
Jimin glared at him pushing him a little, “I didn’t tell you to kiss Seokjin hyung in front of him.” Taehyung pouted, defenseless, thinking it was a stupid move that lead Yoongi to avoid him even more. “I just told you to act coy to get his attention because that’s how it usually is.”
“But he got annoyed at me.”
“You went overboard.” Jimin said tapping his shoulder before walking back to the stage for practice. Taehyung could only groan in frustration.
Taehyung first saw Yoongi during his freshman recruitment. He was certain he heard Yoongi play one of his favourite pieces which lured him to join the music club to get close to him since he can play the saxophone. Jimin supported him at that time giving him advice on what to do to get closer to him but the more Taehyung does it, the more he noticed Yoongi get annoyed at him.
It was a disaster in the first year so he stopped trying sometime during their break even if they had summer sessions. He didn’t attend the entire summer because he went back home to Daegu. He decided to stop messing with Yoongi, that’s why he joined the acting club which was his first choice before he even saw Yoongi.
But he didn’t expect Yoongi to act that certain way which gave Taehyung a little spark of hope that maybe Yoongi might be interested in him just as much Taehyung was interested in Yoongi. So he continued.
Now, here he is on stage paired up with Yoongi’s roommate who probably isn’t too oblivious about his feelings for Yoongi.
“Good even to my ghostly confessor,” He said entering the scene with Seokjin and another member who was acting as the friar.
Seokjin moved closer to him, pulling him into a tight hug as he gave him a small smile in return.
“Are you sure about this?” the friar asked one more time, unsure of having to marry the star crossed lovers in front of him. Seokjin and Taehyung nodded.
Taehyung realised him and Juliet are almost alike in some way. Juliet did everything to be with Romeo. Taehyung did everything for Yoongi to notice him. But Yoongi ended up getting annoyed at him.
Taehyung couldn’t help but see how tragic both stories would end.
Everyone else left after the practice. But Taehyung stayed in the acting room for silence to memorise the rest of the scenes. It calmed him being alone, hearing himself act his feelings away through the lines given to him.
He read through the lines imagining how excited Juliet must’ve felt to meet Romeo again to get married with him.
Thinking about it: if it happened in modern day, people would think they’re crazy to fall in love that quick. They sacrificed their love for something they felt in the spur of moment.
But then again, isn’t that what Taehyung did?
He continued his practice without even noticing the time. Stopping for a while, he went outside the dark building to grab water from the fountain at the end of the hallway— only to see a light across their room.
He walked towards the room, peeping through the small window to see who must’ve stayed in the music room until this hour. But Taehyung did not expect to his stupid crush sitting by the piano, playing with so much emotions.
Taehyung remembered seeing Yoongi play the piano for the first time. It gave him the same feeling as he is feeling right now, watching Yoongi close his eyes as his long slender fingers press on the keys producing a soft melodic sound.
Though Taehyung couldn’t hear the sounds of the piano through the sound proof walls, he was sure that whatever it sounds like, it sounds amazing.
Yoongi was too into playing that he didn’t even notice someone was standing by the door, peeping through the small window. At first his heart started beating so fast because he thought it was a ghost.
Well, a beautiful ghost.
His eyes met with Taehyung’s, raising an eyebrow at him making the younger get in. “H-Hi,” He said messing his hair, avoiding eye contact.
“What are you doing there?” Yoongi asked simply not wanting to make too much conversation.
“I was practicing lines.” Taehyung answered, “You were practicing the pieces, I guess.”
Yoongi hummed in response, unlocking his phone to look at the time. He saw it was already 10pm and the dorm curfew is in two hours.
Pretending he was checking something on his phone, he saw from his peripheral vision that Taehyung was still there fumbling with his fingers. Yoongi turned to look at him before the silence was cut off with a stomach grumbling.
Yoongi bit his lip, looking away, rubbing his stomach that was mad at him for skipping dinner.
Taehyung saw it as an opportunity and spoke, “Wanna go out to eat?” He asked with a wide smile painted on his lips. “My treat but just the convenience store.”
Yoongi couldn’t help but agree because he really was hungry and who wouldn’t want free food?
They walked to the nearest convenience store in silence. Yoongi looking straight as Taehyung trailed behind him. They left the building ensuring it was locked because both agreed on going back to the dorms after eating.
“Just get anything you want, hyung.” Taehyung said the moment they arrived at the store.
Yoongi settled with a cup of ramyun and an iced americano because he’s damn sure he wouldn’t be able to sleep tonight.
“Coffee?” Taehyung asked seeing the packet being placed at the counter, “At night?”
Yoongi chose to ignore his question and taking the food he bought after getting checked out to prepare it. Taehyung smiled awkwardly at the cashier who saw the act Yoongi pulled off in front of him. “That would be 12,000 KRW” Yoongi heard the cashier say while he poured hot water over his ramyun.
Taehyung followed beside him after paying, preparing the ramyun he had bought as well but with strawberry milk.
They stood side by side quietly eating the convenience store food, watching the people walking outside the store.
Yoongi could feel Taehyung attempting to start a conversation, seeing him glance every now and then. But his mouth never opened to talk.
So Yoongi spoke even if he had no plans to.
“Thank you for the food.” He quietly spoke, taking a sip from his drink cooly.
His eyes met with Taehyung’s bright ones. He tried not to stare back but he couldn’t help but notice how he saw the stars in them.
“Hyung,” Taehyung called out shyly, unsure whether he should ask, “Do you want to go home after eating? or can we go somewhere else?”
Yoongi looked at him unsure but the look on Taehyung’s face was hypnotising he couldn’t help but nod, “Sure…” He mumbled, “Where?”
“Let’s go now,” Taehyung said grasping his wrist, “We can still catch the train.”
Taehyung dragged Yoongi, running towards the nearest station hopping on the train with a familiar route.
The trained passed by four stations before Taehyung tapped him that they will get down. He didn’t really know where they were until he heard the operated voice in the train speak:
Now Arriving at Ttukseom Resort Station. Doors are on your right.
Yoongi gave a confused look at Taehyung, only to be returned with a wide smile. “I’ve never been here.”
They exited the train station, only to be welcomed by a beautiful river in front of them.
“My friends told me it’s best to go to the Han River at night.” Taehyung muttered as they walked towards the river, “Have you been here, hyung?”
Yoongi only nodded as he stared at the reflection of the buildings on the water.
He rarely leaves the dormitory and explores the city. The first time he went here was when Seokjin, Hoseok and Namjoon pulled him with them to celebrate the success of the previous festival.
They sat by a tree, watching bicycles go back and forth and a couple of people walking by the river.
“They said the best way to relieve stress is by being closer to nature.” Taehyung spoke, still trying to make conversation, “I’m glad I went here at night.”
Yoongi only hummed, focusing on the view in front of them.
Looking back, he never foresee he’d be sitting by a tree in front of the Han River with Taehyung. Seeing the buildings reflect on the river was something but seeing the world reflect on Taehyung’s eyes was something else.
And Yoongi couldn’t help but stare at him.
The dim light shining over his face, showing the outline of his sculptured face. His nose pointy from his view. His eyes glistening at the beautiful view in front of them.
Yoongi could tell he was deep in thought while here he was, thinking about how beautiful Taehyung looked.
For a moment, Yoongi forgot that this was the person he was annoyed at.
Taehyung suddenly turned to look at him, their eyes meeting. Instinctively, Yoongi would look away. Instead, his cheeks blushed at being caught while his mouth did the work. “I’m not mad at you.” He blurted out.
Taehyung tilted his head, surprised at the random sentence Yoongi had said. “Hm?” He hummed confused where this was going.
Yoongi finally looked away, staring at his lap, “If you think I hate you…” He trailed off, “I don’t.”
“I was starting to think so.” Taehyung chuckled, “That’s good you don’t.”
“You can stop annoying me now.” Yoongi demanded, “I know you’re doing it on purpose.”
“But hyung, you look cute when you’re annoyed.” Taehyung whined, “You always do this face whenever I do something stupid.” He explained making the discontented face that Yoongi does a lot.
Yoongi chuckled pushing Taehyung playfully making him stumble on his back. Taehyung laughed along and continued to imitate the older.
Taehyung sat back up, hand accidentally falling on top of Yoongi’s. Seeing the surprised look on Yoongi’s face made him pull away too quickly.
“Sorry,” Taehyung lowly mumbled.
The light mood suddenly disappeared all because of the sudden physical contact. Yoongi reached out for his phone seeing that it was already 11:30pm and they’re out too late. “Train’s closed. I guess we need to catch the bus going back to the dorms.” Yoongi suggested standing from his position, offering Taehyung a hand to which he gladly took. “I had fun tonight.” He smiled and Taehyung couldn’t help but smile widely at his own success.
They were able to catch the last bus, a random conversation about the festival went on. Taehyung talked about being nervous about taking the lead role in the play while Yoongi cooly talks about how perfect the orchestra already is.
When they arrived at the dorms, he heard Taehyung sigh loudly.
“We got locked out.” Taehyung said pointing at the paper taped on the glass doors.
Dorm curfew time 23:00 - 5:30.
“I forgot about that.” Yoongi chuckled realising he’s locked out. “I guess I’ll have to sleep at the bench.”
“You’ve done that?” Taehyung amusedly asked and Yoongi nodded proudly.
“Second year when I stayed at the music club and I didn’t notice the time.” Yoongi explained, “Five hours isn’t that long if you sleep.” He said finding the bench he slept at that time. He removed his jacket to use it as a blanket, as he laid his back on the bench, closing his eyes.
Taehyung stifled a laugh at Yoongi’s position. “Will you really sleep?” He asked, earning a hum as a response. “Sit up.” Taehyung demanded pushing Yoongi from his position.
Yoongi looked at him annoyed because he already found his position but Taehyung sat at the end and pulled Yoongi back to his position, head resting on Taehyung’s thighs. “Better, right?”
“Better.” Yoongi hummed closing his eyes to sleep.
The next day, Yoongi saw Taehyung again at practice.
When the dorm opened at 5:30, he had to wake Taehyung up who was sleeping soundly despite the uncomfortable position. His legs are probably numb by that time because of how comfortable Yoongi slept.
Seokjin screamed at him when he got back to their room, asking where he had been all night. Of course he didn’t tell him the entire truth, leaving out his little rendezvous to the Han River with Taehyung.
But he knew the truth will come out one way or another.
“Since everything is settled, our practices would mostly be the run of the entire play.” Seokjin announced, “Shall we start?”
There was quiet count down when the lights dimmed. Yoongi started to play the sheet in front of him following the slow build up of the rest of the orchestra.
“Two households both alike in dignity. In fair Verona, where we lay our scene.” Someone from backstage read as the curtains opened showing the first scene of Jimin and Jeongguk fighting.
The rest of the test run went smoothly as it was already the scene where Seokjin met Taehyung.
Looking at the two, everyone would definitely think they are the perfect couple. Both are visually good looking with a perfect built. Both were meant to be actors and maybe they’re meant to be together if only Seokjin didn’t like Hoseok.
Despite skipping the scene, Yoongi could remember the way Taehyung kissed Seokjin. It was full of emotions. Too intimate making Yoongi think that what if Taehyung likes Seokjin all along? And that he was just a pawn to get closer to his roommate?
Yoongi watched the two get pulled away from each other as they transitioned to the next scene where Hoseok was confronting Seokjin’s character that he shouldn’t fall in love with a capulet.
Yoongi loved watching Seokjin act. And to see his other friends act along the stage amused him more. It was as if all of them are born to be on stage– to be in this field of work.
Taehyung was a great actor himself too. It proved to him that Seokjin’s hunch on great actors are mostly true.
The scene everyone knew when it comes to Romeo and Juliet were in front of everyone. Taehyung was standing at the balcony that they prepared, calling out Romeo’s name as Seokjin attempted to go up to the balcony.
“Oh Romeo, Romeo!” Taehyung called out, “Wherefore art thou–”
A loud scream was heard cutting of Taehyung’s line. It was then when they realised Seokjin had fallen off the railing in his attempt to get to Taehyung.
The rehearsal was put to a complete stop as the people backstage started to go to Seokjin. Yoongi, himself, went up on stage to see what happened to his friend.
“Shit hyung” Yoongi swore as he saw his friend who was assisted to sit on a chair. “Are you okay?”
Seokjin reached out to his foot that twisted when he landed on both feet to support his fall, “I think I twisted this foot.”
Yoongi kneeled down, rolling up the hem of Seokjin’s pants while waiting for the wheelchair to bring him to the clinic. He saw the now swollen foot. He tried to move it but he heard Seokjin hissed at the contact. “How did you even fall?” Yoongi asked while staring at his foot. “This looks bad.”
“I missed a step.” Seokjin sighed, lightly caressing his legs that hurts as well. “Fuck, I feel like this is going to be bad.”
“Hey,” Yoongi shushed him, “Don’t think like that. Let’s be positive on this one.”
Seokjin was trying his best not to break down into tears thinking of how much he failed in a simple test run of the play. He thought if he fell during a simple practice, what more if it was the actual thing? That is if he could walk.
By the time the wheelchair arrived, Yoongi volunteered on accompanying his friend to the clinic. Seokjin decided the practice to be cancelled for that day because of the accident. Namjoon was too surprised with what happened that he reprimanded the people assigned at the setting to double check the entire stage for the safety for the future practices and the actual stage set for two weeks.
Yoongi knew he had to be strong for Seokjin. After all the struggle Seokjin has been through for this play to happen, this must be the worst.
“How did you fall exactly?” The doctor asked while aligning the x-ray view over his feet.
“I missed a step on my way up to the balcony setting.” Seokjin explained, giving a clear description of the stage setting, “Then I fell landing on my left foot because I was trying to keep a straight body as I went up.”
“I see,” The doctor hummed analysing the view of the bones of Seokjin’s feet, “You have a fracture on your left foot and if you noticed, it became swollen so fast. It would be hard for you to walk straight in this case.”
Seokjin sighed too loudly after realising the situation he got himself into by just missing a step. “How long would it take?”
The doctor hummed, assessing his foot, “Usually it takes about two to three weeks.”
When Yoongi heard that, he quickly turned to look at Seokjin’s reaction. He could see water forming in his eyes as he choked out a sob.
“You’re the lead role?” The doctor asked receiving a shy nod as a response, “I’m sorry about that.”
Other than Romeo and Juliet, nobody really died. But the sadness Seokjin faced when they got back to the dorms with a cast on his foot was too much for Yoongi to handle.
Because of the cancelled practice, they still have a long day ahead of them. But Seokjin slept without saying anything to Yoongi other than a small thank you for helping him get back to their room.
The next day, Seokjin decided not to attend his class and stayed in bed all day. Yoongi would leave a food beside him every now and then prying him to speak but Seokjin never budged.
Until Sunday came. Yoongi just got back from his own practice at the music room, bringing food for his roommate only to comeback with food Seokjin probably cooked at the dormitory kitchen. “How did you go there?”
“I’m not complete disabled.” He scoffed, “I could barely walk but I can limp.”
Yoongi smiled at Seokjin’s effort, at least proud that he walked out of the room. “What’s with the cooked food?” Yoongi asked raising an eyebrow, “You only do this during special occasions.”
“I walked out of the room.” Seokjin bluntly said, giving Yoongi a chopstick, before he took a bite of the food he made. “And I’ve been thinking.”
“You thinking isn’t a good sign.” Yoongi replied taking the conversation lightly because Seokjin had been way too serious in the past few days of ignoring him. “And there’s a scheduled practice tomorrow.”
“I know I can’t do Romeo anymore,” Seokjin continued ignoring Yoongi’s remarks, “And you know how I had a hard time in choosing before I settled with myself for the casting.”
“Correction: before I convinced you were the perfect person to do Romeo.” Yoongi joked making Seokjin glare at him because to him this was a serious matter.
In fact, it was a serious matter to everyone.
When everyone saw what happened to Seokjin, they saw the entire play fall into crumbles because Seokjin was the backbone of the entire play. He was the one who arranged everything and he was the one who is responsible for the lead role.
Since Seokjin never came out of his room, every time someone would see Yoongi, they would ask him if Seokjin was fine. With a follow up of what would happen to the play?
Will the play still push through?
Will he still be Romeo?
And Yoongi cannot answer them because Seokjin never talked to him as well.
“Do I call Seojoon or Hyunsik?” Yoongi asked remembering the acting members that Seokjin debated on casting as Romeo. “They’re your only picks but do you trust them?”
“I want you to be Romeo.” Seokjin said staring at Yoongi with hopeful eyes.
Yoongi almost choked on his food, looking at Seokjin with wide eyes not really expecting him to say that. “Why me?”
“You’re right. I don’t trust people to do that role,” Seokjin admitted, “but I trust you.”
“No, no, no, no.” Yoongi shook his head too many times, still not understanding what Seokjin wanted, “I can’t be Romeo.”
“But Yoongi!” Seokjin raised his voice a little, “You can memorise lines quick and you’re the one who’s helping me with my lines. You’re the only one who can do it.”
“Hyung, you don’t understand.” Yoongi pleaded, “I’m doing the lead accompaniment for the orchestra as well. It is as important as doing Romeo.”
“Please Yoongi.” Seokjin pleaded back as his voice cracked, trying to fight back the tears of the struggle he’d been through.
And just when Yoongi thought it was the last of him wanting to punch Seokjin’s face.
He wanted to punch him again.
♡
From backstage, Yoongi could hear the auditorium get filled up by the buzzing sound of people talking. Their auditorium isn’t that big. Just a pack of 500 people could occupy the seats– no big deal.
“Are you nervous?” Taehyung asked seeing Yoongi peep through the curtains. “It hasn’t even started but I want you to know that you already did well by doing what Seokjin wanted.”
Ah, yes.
When Seokjin pleaded Yoongi in taking the role, he couldn’t help but say yes because that’s what good friends do… right? Seokjin had a point that maybe he was there in his practices helping him to the proper direction of feeling.
And it’s not like Yoongi hasn’t acted before.
Everyone was surprised when Seokjin announced that Yoongi would take his role and that Seokjin will only be Dave because he would still need to act for the play. At least the role given to Seokjin had lesser appearances so his limping wouldn’t be too obvious.
Even Taehyung was taken aback by Yoongi’s sudden appearance because he expected Seojoon would take place, remember the praises he had received from Seokjin during auditions.
Though they doubted Yoongi’s skills in acting, knowing he was a music major in a music club, he proved them wrong during practices doing the same things he advised Seokjin when they were reading out their lines. He was able to memorise the script in a span of a week and the proper placing three days before today.
Now, here he is wearing a fucking armour costume acting as Romeo in a play that he never really wanted in the first place.
The play wasn’t much of a big deal to him. He’s been on different plays before, more grand than a university festival even if he only took minor roles with Seokjin. It’s not a big deal that he might get scouted in the acting field rather than a musical because Bogum will now play the main accompaniment for the orchestra.
Yoongi wasn’t nervous about the play.
He was nervous about kissing Taehyung.
It has been established with Yoongi that he likes Taehyung despite his annoyance with him. Though he tried to hide it and stay away from him, it just got bigger when he got to know Taehyung more after that night in the Han River. They became even closer in the practices “acting” in love with each other, receiving comments on how everything looked natural.
Unlike with Seokjin, as much as possible, Yoongi avoided the practice of the scene where they kissed. Though there were a lot, he made his own changes and just hugged Taehyung making the entire situation awkward.
And yes, that was exactly what happened in the play.
In the scene of meeting Taehyung, where he had witnessed Seokjin kiss Taehyung, instead of kissing him, he hugged him tightly and stared at him, acting passionately with so much love. There was an attempt of kissing him because the lines had mentioned the lips, but Yoongi just kissed the corner of Taehyung’s mouth, which doesn’t count.
The awkwardness of Romeo and Juliet continued when Yoongi kissed Taehyung again on the corner of lips and angled it better this time when they got married.
Yoongi wasn’t nervous about the play but his feelings for Taehyung made it the worst play that it could be.
When the curtains closed for the scene to change, where Yoongi stayed at the backstage, watching Taehyung die because of the potion, someone pulled him to the side eyes meeting with Seokjin’s piercing glare. “Why can’t you kiss Taehyung?”
“I don’t know,” Yoongi shrugged off the seriousness, “Isn’t Romeo supposed to be a dumbass?”
“Romeo is a dumbass.” Seokjin repeated. “But you’re not.”
“But–”
“I know you’ve been too busy practicing for this role, that’s why we couldn’t talk as much as we did.” Seokjin cut him off, “And I’m not that dumb to not notice that you like Taehyung. So if you’re letting your feelings overpower you, just like how Romeo did– please don’t be like a dumbass like Romeo.”
Seokjin gave Yoongi a last glance, tapping him on the shoulder before he left Yoongi to do the last scene.
Fighting off Jeongguk on his way to the place where the Friar had told him where Taehyung laid. Hearing the perfect combination of the orchestra that he had arranged, the scene transitioned to Yoongi’s final chance.
The curtains opened once again, the entire stage filled with candlelights as Yoongi walked towards Taehyung who laid at the middle of the stage.
Yoongi felt his tears fall as a part of the act, finding out that Juliet had died. He tried to think of all of the things that made him sad so that he could get those tears out ss he spoke his lines, “Forgive me Juliet, for I was late.” Yoongi cried out pulling Taehyung closer to him, “How could you still look so beautiful? Crimson lips and cheeks, of what used to be mine and will forever be mine.”
Taking the poison that he took from the apothecary, he gave Taehyung one last glance surprised to see his eyes looking straight at him where the crowd couldn’t see, “Hyung, I like you.” He whispered while his lapel was still not turned on. “I will kiss you, okay?” He bluntly said closing his eyes once again leaving Yoongi fazed.
Yoongi stared at the poison at hand, seeing the crowd wait for his next move.
Realising that this was the last scene. This is where they both die.
This was the last chance he has.
And Taehyung likes him.
Downing the poison at hand, he fell next to Taehyung, whose lapel was now turned on, waking up from the temporary sleep potion he had taken a few scenes back.
“Romeo?” Taehyung exclaimed seeing his love lifeless beside him with a poison at hand. “ Romeo!” He cried out connecting their lips together to get a taste of the poison he had just drank.
Yoongi’s entire body froze feeling Taehyung’s lips against his. It took him all of his courage not to wake up but he had to wait for Taehyung to kill himself and the curtains to close before anything else.
“Why did you have to leave me?” Taehyung cried out even more seeing the dagger with Yoongi. “Forever.” He whispered before stabbing himself and passing out next to Yoongi.
The production team projected the position of Taehyung and Yoongi before they gave the final ment, slowly closing the curtains.
And when it was fully closed, Yoongi took his final chance.
“Did you just kiss me?” Yoongi asked, Taehyung still lying comfortably on top of him.
Taehyung propped himself up, smiling at him, “I asked for permission.”
“That wasn’t permission.” Yoongi said as a matter of fact, “You just informed me.”
“And I informed you that I like you.” Taehyung added, “I really do.”
“And you had to confess in the middle of a scene,” Yoongi continued to whine, “Can’t you wait until the show was over?”
“Seokjin hyung told me to.” Taehyung pouted, “Plus can you just say that you like me too so I can kiss you again? Properly, this time?”
Yoongi felt his heart leap in joy, as he held Taehyung, pulling him closer, “I really hate that I like you.” Yoongi said, thumb tracing the corner of Taehyung’s lips, “I would’ve kissed you earlier if you told me how you felt instead of annoying the living shit out of me.”
“Where’s the thrill in that?” Taehyung said leaning closer to Yoongi’s lips, “If you didn’t become Romeo, Seokjin hyung wouldn't've told me how you felt.”
“I will kiss you now, okay?” Yoongi ghosted against Taehyung’s lips repeated his permission from earlier, “Because I really like you a lot.”
Taehyung couldn’t take the time Yoongi was taking anymore and placed a hand around his nape to pull him closer, connecting their lips fully this time.
Yoongi remembered how Taehyung’s lips felt from earlier, but it felt so much better against his when he started to respond to the kiss.
The way Taehyung’s lips molded with his made it seem like his lips were made to kiss Taehyung’s. He completely forgot about the fact that these are the same lips that kissed his friend’s but what matters the most right now is those lips are his now.
He lightly sucked on Taehyung’s lower lip making Taehyung release a soft moan, “Hyung,” He mumbled in between kisses, “Everyone is staring.”
Yoongi pulled away only to see all of the backstage crew were watching them do their business on the bed where they had their last scene.
“If you’re going to make out, at least have the decency to wait after curtain call.” Seokjin smirked before pressing the curtains to open revealing to the crowd that the two were still in their same position as earlier.
Yup. Yoongi will really end up punching Seokjin for real after this.
