Day 3: Mountaineering / Strawberries

Summary:

He's not sure how he never noticed that Bakugo likes hiking. He's not gonna complain, though.

“Time to get up!”

Katsuki yelped as he abruptly found himself on the floor instead of in his nice warm bed, and glared up at the bastard who’d pulled him from his pile of blankets. “The fuck do you want, racoon-eyes?”

“Aizawa sent me and Tetsu to wake everyone else up for extra-early morning training.” she jerked a thumb over to where the ward-weaver was crouched by Kirishima’s bed, smiling and holding his shoulder.

“Well, I’m up.” he snarled, pushing himself to his feet. “You two can keep going, I’ll get shitty-hair up.”

“Alright.” she beamed and bounced over to drag their ward-weaver out of the tent. Katsuki snorted and grabbed his clothes from under his blankets, pulling his arm warmers on as he crossed to Kirishima’s bed.

“Hey.” he kicked his friend in the shoulder, then kicked him a few more times until Kirishima swatted at him with an irritated grunt.

“”M up, ‘m up.”

“We’ve got early training, so you better be.” Bakugo said, pulling his shorts on and wandering back over to his side of the tent to grab his belt and knife. Kirishima gave an unenthusiastic grunt, and Bakugo heard the thwump of a dragon-shifter dropping unrestrained onto his bed. “I will get the birdbrains to help me drag your ass out if you don’t get up.”

“Don’ wanna.” Kirishima grunted into his pillow. Bakugo walked back over and kicked him again.

“Get dressed, dipshit. It’s just training.”

Another groan, this one more emphatically displeased. Katsuki rolled his eyes.

“I’ll heat the air for you with my magic warm-ups.” he offered, and there was a moment of silence before Kirishima levered himself up sideways, hair sticking up in all directions.

“Fine.” he grumbled, fishing around for his own pants under the blankets as Bakugo turned and went to pull his boots and socks on.

“Everyone take a bag.” Aizawa said as soon as they were all assembled, gesturing at a piled of rucksacks next to him. “We’re going hiking.”

Eijirou wasn’t alone in groaning at that. They’d spent the past two days moving the camp from the plains up to the foothills, finished setting up late last night, and now Aizawa wanted them to walk more? The bags were probably heavy, too.

“Where?” Bakugo asked, and Eijirou had to do a double take when he glanced at his friend because Bakugo was smiling. Not smirking or sneering, not anything like the manic grin he wore in battle or the smug smiles he threw around in training when he was paired up with someone who wasn’t Eijirou. No, this smile lit up his whole face, shining in his eyes as he rocked up on the balls of his feet. It was actually kinda cute, which wasn’t a word he or anyone usually applied to Bakugo.

“Up Mount Carasonee.” Aizawa pointed at the mountain which rose up into the fog, and Eijirou noted that Bakugo didn’t groan with the rest of them, instead smiling brighter. Eijirou grabbed his assigned bag, which wasn’t as heavy as he’d feared but still easily seven or eight kilos, and fell in step beside Bakugo as Aizawa led them up the slope.

“You like hiking?” he asked Bakugo, and got a brisk nod for an answer.

“You didn’t notice when we were on the road?” Bakugo asked, and Eijirou shrugged. “Moron.”

“Weirdo.” he stuck out his tongue, and grinned at the face Bakugo pulled in response. The lighthearted chatter of the group petered out as the trail began to climb in earnest, and by the time the sun was fully up Eijirou was glad he was able to go shirtless now. The girls were the only ones still wearing their tops, which were all darkened with sweat.

“Aizawaaa, can we stop for a break?” Mina whined, utterly shameless as she tugged at the neck of her shirt.

“Not yet.” Aizawa shook his head, not even sounding out of breath. “You’ll know when we reach our break spot.”

Groans came from all around them, and Eijirou focused on keeping pace with Bakugo. The sun was well into the sky when the incline under their feet grew shallow, and Eijirou’s breath caught in his throat as he took in the gently sloped meadow they’d come out into. A narrow path wound through the center, between clusters of low-growing leafy plants with bright red-

“Strawberries!” Tetsutetsu shouted, exhaustion forgotten as he darted forwards to the nearest bush and pulled one from its stem. “They’re sweet!” he exclaimed, and Eijirou looked to Aizawa hopefully.

“You have one hour.” their teacher said, mouth twitching only slightly and eyes crinkling at the corners. “Then we keep climbing.”

“Thank you, Aizawa!” Mina cheered, rushing after Tetsutetsu.

“Betcha I can pick more strawberries than you.” Bakugo challenged, and Eijirou grinned.

“You’re on.”

An hour later, Shinsou declared their contest a draw, and Eijirou shared out his haul with the other trainee warriors and scouts as they started off back up the mountain. Bakugo refused to share, of course, but he didn’t swat Eijirou’s hand away when he finished his own strawberries and started helping eat up Bakugo’s.
