Work Text:
One glance was all it took for Jyuto to break out into a smirk, the sight of that familiar back enough to speed up his gait.
His nose was stuck in a book as usual as he maneuvered through the crowd with ease, never once peering up from the pages. It was an impressive feat but, with how often he pulled this off, Jyuto assumed it came with the territory.
He was alone today, which was a rare occasion. There was no sight of that little demon or his loud friend, which only served to feed into Jyuto’s elation. Excellent. Jyuto just so happened to have some spare time at the moment and was looking for a way to entertain himself.
This would be the perfect outlet.
Jyuto straightened his tie and touched up his hair before he casually walked up to him. “My, my,” Jyuto said, his voice smooth. “If it isn’t, Yumeno-san. It’s certainly been a while, has it not?”
Gentaro didn’t even bother to peek from his book, eyes still roving the pages as he spoke, “Mm, Iruma-san? You’re correct,” a pause, and he turned a page. “I’d almost forgotten about your annoying face with how long it’s been, too bad you had to go and break the streak.”
Jyuto’s brow twitched, before he offered the fakest smile he could muster. “Oh? I find it funny you say that, considering you’re the one on my territory.”
“I had some business to tend to, is all,” Gentaro replied. “Is that such a crime, officer?”
The smug tone in that voice was almost enough to break Jyuto’s composed façade. Had he not been used to this sort of thing – both from Gentaro and his daily life – his smile might’ve faltered. His profession often called for fake smiles and compliments, so he was more than an expert by now.
You didn’t get away with breaking the law without kissing ass.
“Business all the way out here in Yokohama?” Jyuto asked, skeptical. Even if what Gentaro said was true, he was awfully close to where Jyuto resided… “That’s quite a trip. It must’ve been important.”
Without hesitation, Gentaro nodded. “Of course, why else would I come to this horrible place? Surely, it wouldn’t be without good reason.”
With that, Jyuto let out a hum. “I don’t believe you.” This time, Gentaro did peer up from his book. He looked Jyuto with a sideways glance, his eyes narrowed. That expression held a dangerous edge to it, and it sent a jolt of electricity through Jyuto’s body. Jyuto continued on despite that, exhilarated at catching Gentaro in another one of his lies, “It’s quite a coincidence your errands happen to be so near to where I live, don’t you think?” Jyuto paused for a beat before he let out a smirk, “I happen to know this area quite well, however, and I can’t think of anywhere nearby that would need tending to from someone such as yourself.”
“I didn’t realize this was an interrogation,” Gentaro drawled. “Ramuda has connections, it’s not unfathomable there are places here you don’t know about.”
The statement pulled a cackle from Jyuto, the sound of it cold. Gentaro’s eyes widened slightly in response before he caught himself. Jyuto still saw it, though – a fact they were both aware of, even if he didn’t mention it. “Hidden places in my town? Surely, you must be joking.” Jyuto could feel himself puff up at his own words. Confidence seeped into him as it became clear that he’d been correct about Gentaro’s presence in Yokohama, and that this was all a ruse. “Why don’t you admit the real reason you’re here, Yumeno-san. Your goal is to make others laugh with those lies of yours, isn’t it? Well, you’ve accomplished your goal. Go on and tell me.”
Gentaro wasn’t quick to answer this time and his silence telling. Jyuto was ready to say more before Gentaro came to an abrupt halt. Jyuto stopped along with him in response, his brow raised in curiosity.
With measured steps, Gentaro brought them closer together. His book covered half of his face and as he neared Jyuto he pulled onto his tie without hesitation. The action pulled a gasp out of Jyuto, their eyes locked as they were mere inches apart.
Only when Gentaro spoke did he lower his book, his eyes lidded. “I don’t believe I have to say anything,” Gentaro said, his faces so close that Jyuto could feel the ghost of his breath on his own as he spoke, their lips barely brushing. “Or are you really such a good-for-nothing cop that you can’t figure it out?” As quickly as it started, it ended as Gentaro pulled away.
He walked off, leaving Jyuto in place as he resumed his book seamlessly. It took a moment before Jyuto regained himself, gloved fingers touching at his lips. Even in his frazzled state, Jyuto didn’t miss it as Gentaro turned the corner, headed towards his condo.
A smile tugged at his lips, before Jyuto followed after him.
It looked like Jyuto had an errand to do, himself.
