Work Text:

Shoto wasn’t allowed to talk to his soulmate. His father didn’t want any distractions from his training. Blah blah blah, having a soulmate will only distract you from becoming the number one hero, you have to be strong to defeat All Might, your siblings are failures so they can have their soulmates, blah blah blah. Shoto was sick of it. So he took to talking to his soulmate in the dead of night, with a pen he hid inside the small hole he once made in his mattress.

Yellow letters always came back to him quickly. His soulmate was the happiest person he had ever met. He was always excited about something. Shoto had told him a little about his father’s parenting skills, and he was always there for comfort.

As they got older, they talked less. They were both working to get into hero schools, so they needed more time to focus on studying and training. Shoto missed talking for hours on end, even if it meant that his father would punish him for being tired the day after.

When Shoto got into UA, he wanted to tell his soulmate. Unfortunately, you couldn’t just tell your soulmate things about you. That would be too easy. They had to find you first. You couldn’t share your workplace or school, where you currently were, your name, or any other personal details until you and your soulmate made contact. Then you could share anything and everything about yourself. Shoto settled for telling his soulmate that he got into his dream school.

The two kept on talking every night until UA switched to a dorm system. Without his father’s restrictions, he could talk to his soulmate whenever he wanted. He decided to take the plunge and write to his soulmate on the first day of the dorms, while his classmates were checking out each other’s dorm rooms.

Hey. My school has dorms now, I can talk whenever without my father finding out. How’s your day been?

Shoto smiled as yellow text came back.

Sweet!!! My day’s been going great, even better now that we can talk! What about yours?

Shoto took a glance into the next room, watching as the girls fawned over the bunny Kouda owned.

It’s been relaxing. Never thought I’d enjoy UA this much.

Shoto inwardly sighed as he realized he’d written his school’s name. It’d just appear as a blur to his soulmate.

Dude. Have we met each other? You go to UA too?

Shoto stared down at his arm. Had he already met his soulmate? He took a glance at his classmates to see if he saw one with a pen. Unfortunately, about five of his classmates were scribbling on their arms.

We must have. What class are you in?

Shoto’s eyes widened as the reply came.

1-A, the hero course.

Had he really been around his soulmate this whole time without noticing?

Are you kidding me? We must be no more than 10 feet apart in that case.

Shoto smiled to himself as he wondered which one of his classmates was his soulmate.

Do you wanna annoy people while we figure this out? We could yell “soulmates!” on the count of three or something!

You only live once, right?

Your count.

He watched as the numbers appeared on his arm.

“Soulmates!” Shoto’s eyes widened as he saw who else spoke. Denki Kaminari.

“Todoroki! You’re my soulmate?” Kaminari bounced over to Shoto as their classmates watched on, intrigued.

“It seems so.” His tone is casual, but inside he felt the happiest he ever had. He was excited. Kaminari nervously touched Shoto’s arm. Shoto leaned into his touch, encouraging him to continue.

“Do you… wanna take a walk?” Kaminari smiled his blinding smile at Shoto.

“I’d like that.” As the two departed from the collection of their classmates, leaving the murmurs of shock behind, Shoto considered how lucky he was. He was away from his father, he was at a wonderful school with wonderful friends, and he was soulmates with the cutest boy in the class. He smiled down at the bouncing teen next to him. He decided to take a calculated risk. “Kaminari?”

“Hmm?” Todoroki stopped them in the courtyard.

“May I kiss you?”

“Yes!” Shoto swore he felt a small jolt of electricity come from Kaminari’s palm. He decided not to comment on it. Instead, he turned and grabbed the blond’s other hand, standing so they were facing each other under a tree. He leaned forward, letting his eyes flutter shut as his lips made contact with Kaminari’s. They moved awkwardly together, teeth occasionally clacking as they got the hang of it. They pulled back after a moment and rested their foreheads together.

“I think I love you.” Kaminari laughed at Shoto’s words.

“I think I love you too.”

They kissed again, ignoring the chorus of “aww” coming from the classmates that had followed them outside. Shoto decided nothing could bother him, as long as Kaminari was there with him. But he did threaten his classmates with a flick of his right hand and a shower of ice shards. He had to keep up appearances, after all.

Notes:

I totally forgot to do these in advance so they’re super messy. This is hella fun though. I love soulmate AUs. Give me more ideas for them please.
