Chapter Text
“Happy 10 year anniversary!!”
Wine glasses came to a gentle contact, producing a unique sound, indicating the moment of happiness. As the middle-aged couple took a sip of their red wine, they looked at each other in the eye. Love travelled from one side to another, causing the room to heat up. The romantic smiles the couple sent to each other attracted several gazes to them, not that they noticed. The only one person that mattered to them in the moment was the one in front of them.
To Rokuya Nagi, Rokuya Mitsuki was everything to him.
To Rokuya Mitsuki, Rokuya Nagi was his everything.
The two got married 10 years ago on this very day. Nagi was visiting Japan. While a 19-year-old Nagi was sightseeing and shopping for Magical Cocona anime merchandise in Akihabara, he carelessly bumped into Mitsuki as he was admiring his limited edition Magicona plush way too much. Mitsuki, 21 at the time, was in a bad mood as he failed yet another audition to become an idol. He ended up taking it out on Nagi, scolding the Northmarean for half an hour straight in the middle of the busy street.
After letting his bottling up emotions poured out, Mitsuki apologised to the charming stranger and took him to his bakery to give him a piece of decorated chocolate cake as a compensation. Nagi instantly fell in love with the rich taste and perfect texture of the cake. He kept coming back to the bakery for more, once or twice a week or so. Until, he fell in love with not only the cake, but the baker himself. Mitsuki was happy he got yet another regular customer. Although, Nagi was not just any customer. He would come near shop’s closing time and stayed until late to listen to Mitsuki’s stories. Half of the time, Mitsuki cried about his failed attempts at auditions. Nagi would always say reassuring words to Mitsuki and made the shorter boy see the quality he failed to see in himself.
Two years after their fateful meeting, Mitsuki became a host for a famous idol talk show instead of becoming an idol himself. He was more happy with his job than he thought he would be. Plus, he got to occasionally meet one of his favourite idols, Nanase Riku, who was Japan’s No.1 sweetheart. Nagi got a modelling job in Japan so he had been staying since that day he met Mitsuki. One day, Nagi booked a fancy restaurant for just the two of them and went to pick Mitsuki up at his bakery. With romantic live music in the background, Nagi bent down on one knee and proposed to Mitsuki.
“I will love you forever, Mitsuki”
Who would have known it was a lie which was not meant to be?
Five years into their marriage, Mitsuki and Nagi settled into a normal life of a small family. They had no children and had no plans to adopt one. They were happy with being husbands. Nagi’s inner Otaku kept bringing up topics about new or trending anime. Mitsuki would laugh about how Nagi could talk about them so passionately. Sometimes, they got into a fight as Nagi spent too much money on figurines or Mitsuki squealing too much about idols. It was perfectly normal for a couple.
Except things started to change.
As they both gained more experience at work, Nagi and Mitsuki got more job offers. They became pretty busy and had less time to share with each other. They were not even free during weekends. Tiredness took over their lives after work each day and dinner together became a rare occasion. Communications exchanged between the two decreased without them really noticing. They both settled into their new lives, not knowing a dark void targeting their relationship was growing larger and larger.
After 9 years of being together, Nagi and Mitsuki never fought again. People around them thought they were one of the happiest, ideal couples. Little did they know the stupid quarrels never happened because they hardly ever sat and talked anymore. Actually, the two did know. Day after day, Mitsuki’s heart was filled with loneliness and he came home around 6PM to an empty house. The baker would make a delicious pie just to savour the divine taste alone. Nagi would come home so late there was no way Mitsuki’s hunger and exhaustion could wait. After he confirmed Nagi was home each night, Mitsuki would go to sleep. Nagi would crawl into bed after his dinner which was left on the table.
They had thought things would be fixed magically after their 10th year anniversary. It turned out they became even more distant. The anniversary dinner made Mitsuki cry so much harder than before when he got home on his own the next day. He missed the warmth from the energetic, crazy yet gentle Nagi. He missed those memories they created and shared together.
“Nagi, can’t you...rearrange your schedule? The workload is not good for your health.”
“I’m sorry, Mitsuki...I’ll try”
It was not the first time Mitsuki had raised his concern. In fact, the orange haired man had said it over and over again for the past few years. Nagi would always give the same reply, yet he never seemed to come home any earlier. Deep inside Mitsuki’s heart, he believed they could bring back those bright, cheerful days. He believed their love were still going strong even though they were not together much.
However, Nagi had a different idea. He loved Mitsuki. He still loves Mitsuki, but somehow, his heart felt empty. In the past, whenever someone mentioned his beloved husband, Nagi would beam and talk about Mitsuki non-stop. Now? He felt nothing. Mitsuki felt like once a sweet dream to him. Nagi cried. The model had cried so much at his workplace because his own heart betrayed him. His love for Mitsuki was supposed to last an eternity. It was supposed to be the greatest treasure of his life, yet he let it slip away so easily and quietly.
“Oh Mitsuki...”
No matter how hard Nagi tried, he just could not look at Mitsuki the same way. Despite caring very much about the man, his love had completely faded away. Dragging it out would only hurt both Mitsuki and himself. Nagi realised he had to act, in order to save the man he cherished.
“Mitsuki, we should...break up”
Nagi failed to look into Mitsuki’s orange eyes of pure sadness. The cracked glass they were holding in their hearts now shattered completely. Those words that came out of Nagi’s mouth crushed Mitsuki’s mind and soul. Tears was dripping all the way down from the man’s eyes to the floor, while shouts consisting of the word “why” could be heard over and over again. What hurt Mitsuki more was when he had answers to all without hearing Nagi’s answers.
There was no one else to blame. The couple started this relationship, and they ended it themselves.
That late night, they shared their last kiss. It was probably one of the most passionate they had in years, and it would likely never happen again.
“Goodbye, Mitsuki.”
