Work Text:

When Wei Wei thinks about it, it’s funny how she keeps getting fever and colds every time she gets drenched in the rain. It has caused Xiao Nai to become overprotective and strict about her rushing out at even the lightest of rains.

If only Wei Wei can win and render the Great Master speechless, she would’ve said that she only started getting sick from the rain when she met him. Sadly, if Wei Wei voiced this out loud, she knows she’d get shut down or be even more blamed for being reckless and getting rained on.

Today, the weather is chilly and the clouds are a swirling grey mist. The promise of rain is imminent. Wei Wei makes sure to bundle up in her thickest clothes before going to class. She’s been lucky so far. It didn’t rain yet when she went to her first and second classes. Then, the rain let up on her way to her third class. By the end of her day in class, she feels that the weather isn’t so bad if she just stays in.

Wei Wei smiles to herself. As tempting as it is, she has to go to Zhi Yi Technologies today for her internship. And of course, the Great Master wouldn’t let her get away if she skives off. Wei Wei’s smile grows as she thinks of her Great Master. Unbeknownst to her, her male classmates can only stare dreamily and sigh in defeat. The Great Beauty and Brains of the computer science department is taken. Where is the justice in the world, they think.

The rain pours when Wei Wei walks to Zhi Yi. She has her umbrella, so there is no problem of Xiao Nai scolding her (again). Senior Yu and Mr. Beauty greet her as she walks into the office.

Old Man Yu says with a frown, “You went out in this downpour? What will Third Bro say when he sees you like this?”

She doesn’t look as bad as he makes it sounds like. Her shoes and ankles are the only ones soaked as she has the right idea to wear a skirt that day to avoid getting her pants drenched. Her shoulders and hair are dry as her umbrella is big enough to cover her.

Still, Wei Wei can’t help but put a finger on her lips. “Shh, don’t let him hear you. And it’s not so bad. I brought another pair of shoes just in case, so I won’t get cold feet.” She smiles teasingly at Senior Yu while Mr. Beauty laughs out loud.

“Your poor use of idioms is backfiring on you, Old Man Yu,” Mr. Beauty says, grinning.

Senior Yu grumbles. “Why must you torture me this way, Junior Wei Wei?”

“Wei Wei.”

Faster than lightning, Wei Wei’s seniors flee the scene while citing silly excuses. However, to Wei Wei’s confusion, the call came not from the Great Master’s office but from the door behind her. She turns around and sees—

“Great Master! What happened?” Wei Wei cries out.

Great Master is drenched from head to toe. His hair clings to his forehead, and his white dress shirt is almost like second skin. Wei Wei is worried, but she also cannot help running an appreciative glance. Even though wet from the rain, the Great Master still looks so handsome.

Xiao Nai does not answer. Instead, he looks over Wei Wei as if checking for injuries. His gaze lingers for a moment at her wet shoes before he meets her eyes again. “Just wanted to see you as soon as possible.”

Wei Wei feels her face heats up. From some corner of the office, Senior Hou comes rushing out, holding his phone and an umbrella. He stops running when he sees Wei Wei and Xiao Nai.

“Third Bro, why didn’t you wait for me to bring you the umbrella? I was busy with some documents so I didn’t see your text until now.” Senior Zhou tsks as he sees how drenched the Great Master is. “And you always scold Third Sis-in-law when she gets rained on.”

Xiao Nai is unaffected by his words. “No matter. I have a change of clothes in my office. Wei Wei, come with me.”

Wei Wei and the Great Master leave amidst protests. Wei Wei wants to join in and agree that the Great Master shouldn’t be so harsh on her if he couldn’t follow his own directive.

But when the door of the Great Master’s office slams shut, Wei Wei finds herself pressed against the door and kissed like there’s no tomorrow. She wants to say that it reminds her of their first kiss, but Wei Wei has gotten used to Great Master reacting this way once she arrives at work.

So she lets her worry and anger go, and returns the kiss.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Once they’re both dry—Wei Wei in her spare shoes, and Xiao Nai in his spare clothes—and seated on the sofa doing work, Wei Wei says, “What do you mean by that?”
As expected from the Great Master, he immediately understood what she’s talking about. He lowers the folder file he’s reading, giving Wei Wei his undivided attention. “I met with a prospective client at the café across the street. After the meeting, it began to rain, so I called the office phone and had Drunk Monkey Hou bring me an umbrella. He was too slow, because I already saw you already on your way to the office.”
Wei Wei blinks. “It would only be just a few minutes of waiting.”
Xiao Nai studies her face then returns to reading his folder. He is silent for a while, and Wei Wei has resumed working.
So it is a great surprise when he says, “Every minute not seeing you is a minute too long.”
Wei Wei hides behind her own folder to hide her blushing face and silly smile. Master is indeed too great!
They work in silence after that. Wei Wei is in a good mood, so she finds it a bit hard to concentrate on the report she’s working on. Who can blame her? It is so typical for the Great Master to be so frank and shameless when it comes to things like this. But it still catches Wei Wei by surprise. It amazes her every time to realize that someone as otherworldly and great as Xiao Nai is her husband boyfriend.
Wei Wei is so caught up praising the Great Master in her mind that she doesn’t immediately notice Xiao Nai’s pinched eyebrows.
When she finally does, Wei Wei is surprised to see such an unusual expression on the Great Master’s typically composed demeanor. Other than the distressed set of his brows, there is no indication that Xiao Nai looks anything out of the ordinary. And even that can be taken by others as a sign of concentration and not find anything unusual from it. If Wei Wei hasn’t been around him all these months, even she wouldn’t notice.
But now Wei Wei is the Great Master’s closest person. She knows when he is focusing and when he is in a bad mood. Right now, the Great Master looks similar to when he’s in a bad mood. Oh God, what should she do?!
To calm down the Great Master, Wei Wei decides to make tea. She gets up and feels eyes on her. Thankfully, the Great Master doesn’t say anything and refocuses on his work. A few minutes later, she sets down the Great Master’s cup with the figure of Yi Xiao Nai He facing his way.
Xiao Nai looks up and his lips curve at the sight of his cup. “Thank you, my dear wife.”
Wei Wei smiles back. Then, not one to keep her thoughts to herself, she asks, “Would you like to tell me why you’re in a bad mood?”
The Great Master seems taken aback by the question. “What makes you say I’m in a bad mood?”
Sighing, Wei Wei scoots closer on the couch and leans towards Xiao Nai. “It’s because your eyebrows are doing this.” She reaches out a hand to touch said eyebrows.
However, Wei Wei feels heat, and her eyes widen. She flattens her palm on Xiao Nai’s forehead. “You’re burning up. Why aren’t you saying anything?”
Xiao Nai smiles fondly at Wei Wei, as if charmed by her concern. “It’s nothing. I’ll take medicine once I’m finished with this.”
Wei Wei frowns. “Wait here.” She stands up and goes out of the Great Master’s office. If she isn’t allowed to be stubborn when sick, then so does Xiao Nai!
She finds Old Man Yu typing away on his laptop and goes to ask, “Senior, do you have any fever medicine?”
Senior Yu looks up from his work, confused. “Yeah, I have some here.” He rummages in his drawer and hands it to Wei Wei. “Are you sick? If so, you should go home and rest, Third Sis-in-law.”
“It’s the Great Master who’s sick, not me.”
Old Man Yu’s eyes widen. “Third Bro is sick?” he almost shouts.
“Shh!” Wei Wei says before she can question why she’s trying to hide it. “Why are you so shocked? It’s not like this is the first time he had fever.” When Senior Yu nods at the non-question, it’s her turn to be shocked. “It is?”
“What’s up? What secret are we finding out now?” Senior Beauty asks from his desk.
“Third Bro is sick.”
Even Senior Beauty has a similar reaction. “Whoa, this is the first time since we met him. I’m gonna go see him.”
Wei Wei quickly holds out her arms to stop their sudden dash. “You can’t! He has to rest.”
Senior Beauty and Senior Yu exchange grins and Wei Wei can almost hear them say “his wife is protective” to each other. “Third sis-in-law,” Senior Beauty says, “you have to take care of Third Bro. We heard from his parents that the last time he had a fever was in middle school. We swear that was the moment we confirmed that Third Bro is inhuman.”
Middle school?” Wei Wei repeats in shock. Thankfully, she recovers. “Okay, I’ll convince him to take the day off and rest.”
They wave her goodbye and wish her luck, and she goes back with the fever medicine. Luckily, Xiao Nai has stopped working and is sitting calmly, waiting for her to return. She hands the medicine and water without a word, and the Great Master takes it. When he is done, Wei Wei suggests, “Would you like to go home early and rest?”
“No need.” An idea seems to occur to the Great Master making him look at Wei Wei with a smug smile. “If I say yes, are you going to take care of me?”
That makes Wei Wei speechless. Even when sick, the Great Master can still bowl over people. But she wants to make Xiao Nai take the rest of the day off, so she acquiesces.
“Okay.”
If possible, Xiao Nai smiles wider. “Let’s leave now, then.”
I forgot to mention. I watched the series on Youtube, so most of the translations I used are based on Drama Fever. "Great Master" is the translation used in the novel by Li'l Bliss.
