Hold Onto My Daffodils

Summary:

“That tune you play sounds so gentle, play more for me, I plea, for I will grant you one wish. However, I cannot make someone fall in love with you, nor can I bring back the dead.”

She was a bright woman who appeared from his guqin. Her smile so similar to whom he yearns for, but still can not compare to the person he lost. Her face as genuine as her words, waiting to hear an answer worthy of granting.

“Then...I’d like to travel to the past...14 years...in the past...when a new year at Cloud Recesses begins.”

Alt: Lan Wangji and ... go 14 years back in time and save everything, and by everything, I mean Wei Ying and Jiang Sect.

This is my first time writing on AO3! Please take care of me ლ(´ڡ`ლ)

Chapter 1: Prologue - My Wish

Chapter Text

Time: Xuanzheng 34

Another day, comes another time to play the guqin, comes another day Inquiry is played. The song is soothing, yet infused with hope to find someone. That someone, is not who Lan Wangji is looking for, but will lead him to his answer.

“Wish what you want, but the past will always repeat itself. Now, as I grant your wish, play more for me. Give me a performance so beautiful I will never regret helping you regain what you lost.”

“Mn.”

As he continued to play, his esteemed guest starts to hum along while he caught on to what was happening every time his hands moved to the guqin, he was disappearing. Though he was fading, this did not stop Lan Wangji from hearing her final words...

“A melody I will never forget, I grant you another wish, another person from your time follows you so, find them and they will help you sow what you lost...”

Xuanzheng 20 — 14 years ago.

“Huh? What the hell am I doing here. Must be a dream, Jin Ling, where are you?”

“You...”

“I’m sorry Second Master Lan, it seems I’m on Cloud Recesses right now. You look younger, almost like you did a decade ago. Actually, I take that back, you look exactly the same.” Said man starts to look for the exit, yet the younger Lan Wangji stopped him before he started to walk out.

“Wait, Sect Leader Jiang, I believe you are the person she sent back with me.”

“She? Sent back? Isn’t the time Xuanzheng 34? Now that I think about it, your wall of sect rules looks like it downgraded back to 3000.” Jiang Cheng had his aloof attitude still, staring intensely at Lan Wangji with frustration.

“Let’s talk in the Library Pavilion. The year is Xuanzheng 20, today is the first day you and Wei Ying along with many other students come to Cloud Recesses.”

“I hate to interrupt but I must say you talk a lot compared to what I remember. Must have been Wei Wuxian’s impact.”

Chapter 2: Agreement

Summary:

Lan Wangji and Jiang Cheng will come up with an agreement suited best for the two of them, with Jiang Cheng unwilling to live this life again and see his family die, Lan Wangji proposes a plan.

Chapter Text

Looking back at it, Cloud Recesses always chose the right time to start a new year and welcome new students. The atmosphere was clean and there were no traces of trouble at all.

However, a new year means new students who haven’t learned all 3000 of the sect rules laid out by Gusu Lan Sect. One of those new students in particular, Wei Wuxian. The care free senior disciple of Yunmeng Jiang Sect was currently with another friend, Nie Huaisang, in search of his companion, the teenage Jiang Cheng who was now in Library Pavilion with teenage Lan Wangji.

“So you wished to go back in time and now we’re here. Why drag me back? Why didn’t you take your brother, Sect Leader Lan would have been way better at handling this situation.” Jiang Cheng was not amused, and of course said man did not waste a second to prove it. The look in his eyes shown he did not care for who’s land he was on, and who the senior was in this situation.

“Mn. Brother would be a good choice, but I had no power in who I could bring back. This is my only wish. I have no other right to grant you to go back.” Replying to Jiang Cheng was difficult for he had made a great point that his brother would be the best option as a wise man, but bringing someone who was close to Wei Ying during this time period was even better, “I...save...I want to save Wei Ying.”

Jiang Cheng looked at the man in front of him, though his expression says otherwise, he heard the genuine and desperate calls from Lan Wangji. Following with his gestures he slowly placed his head to rest on his hand as he let out a sigh. “Look, what good will saving Wei Wuxian do? You cannot change history, you, as Hanguang-Jun should be well aware,” The scornful truth was laid out in front of Lan Wangji, of course he knew he can’t change fate, he was even warned by the woman who gave him this chance he couldn’t, “If you have anything else to say, do it now, according to this time I’m suppose to be with Wei Wuxian. Everything is bound to happen again, so why did you bring me here? Watch my family die again? Watch my adopted brother indirectly kill my sister and brother in law and leave me with their son? Do you hate me that much for leading the siege that you want me to experience everything I went through over and over again?”

His face showed pain, even if it had been a decade, that doesn’t erase the feeling of losing a loved one. They say time will continue to heal your wounds, yet the two men sitting face to face knew time would never give back what they could not protect.

“No, I never meant to have you watch your family die again. We must get rid of Wen Sect before the Archery Hunt. Without Qishan Wen Sect, Wei Ying will not learn Demonic Cultivation and he will be able to walk the right path. Qishan Wen Sect will not be able to attack Yunmeng Jiang Sect. We will make sure your family lives, and Young Master Jin will have his parents by his side.” That determination in Lan Wangji’s speech never faltered, the man in front of him was truly deserving of his title as Second Jade of Lan.

None of this had reached the arrogant and prideful man’s ear until the mentions of his family, to him, his family was everything. His father had never physically shown any care to him, but Jiang Fengmian was still his father. His mother was a woman in love but hurt to know her husband didn’t love their son as much as he loved Wei Wuxian. Any mother would feel anger towards this. His sister, he loved his sister more than anything, watching her die and leaving A-Ling behind was the most painful thing for him.

“Haah...alright. For a man who isn’t suppose to talk a lot, you sure are going beyond.” Jiang Cheng stood up and walked towards the Pavilion’s exit, “However, when it comes to my family, I have my own way of solving my affairs. Being able to change fate or not, I will not waste this opportunity, and as the person who wished for this, I better see you give this your all as well.”

His family affairs were one thing, but he knew deep down what he wanted to do. He wanted to fix his parents and their relationship, he wanted to make his sister happy, he wanted to confront his dad and own up to how he felt and not let his mother talk in his stead, and most of all, he wanted to see his playful brother again. While walking down the hallways he noticed the sound of footsteps were getting louder, until a man wearing black robes jumped on him.

“Jiang Cheng! There you are! Man where were you, how could you leave me alone with Huaisang?! We were looking everywhere for you, look how tired we are!”

His brother. His brother was standing in front of him, in his original body, his regular flashy smile, hair tied up, would he have looked the same if this body had lived fourteen years later?

That was a future he could not predict, but what he did know, was the future of tonight. Tonight, Wei Wuxian will sneak in Emperor’s Smile past curfew, and will be caught by Lan Wangji according to the story Wei Wuxian told him the first time this happened. The only thought in his head...

Will Lan Wangji appear in front of Wei Ying tonight?

Chapter Text

This time at Cloud Recesses was hard for Wei Wuxian. Of course it was, the man died and suddenly he’s years back to when he first meets Lan Wangji. While thinking in his room he decided to lay down and go through what had just happen to him. He was chilling in the afterlife until an elderly woman in there had told him to have fun, whatever that meant, and now he’s here.

“Man, relive a life? Go back in time? Sounds fun! I should go get some Emperor’s Smile to celebrate! Now that I think about it, didn’t I meet Lan Zhan this night as well?” He chuckled to himself while lifting his body up and walked out the door.

It had already been nighttime and every student was expected to be asleep, of course, everyone except Wei Wuxian.

“Emperor’s Smile! Truly a masterpiece unexpected from a place with so many rules like Gusu Lan Sect!” Jumping on top of the roof of the outer layer of Cloud Recesses, he seated himself in a comfortable position and started drinking.

“Alcohol is forbidden at Cloud Recesses. It is past curfew, all who stay past curfew cannot go back inside until the morning.”

‘Oh my god here we go again,’ was all Wei Wuxian thought about. “Who knew I was going to run into the famous Lan Wangji during this hour? Will you let me go through? Pretty please?”

The two looked at each other as though they both saw someone they haven’t seen in centuries.

“Um, you okay? You want some too right?! I knew Cloud Recesses was too strict!” said man with alcohol pushed his Emperor’s Smile towards Lan Wangji with a grin.

“...Shameless. Go and accept your punishment,” even though the person in front of him was everything he yearned for, the person he’s meant to save, he was still a righteous man who abide by the rules of Cloud Recesses. Every time he looked at Wei Wuxian he felt grief and regret, regretting the times he did not successfully bring the man he loved back with him. He couldn’t protect Wei Wuxian, yet to see him in his body when they are in their teenage years again, he had nothing but hope on his side. Hope to give Wei Wuxian the years he had lost.

Of course he wanted Wei Wuxian to go take his punishment for breaking the rules, but he didn’t want Wei Wuxian to hate him either. In the past he had a duel, which led to Wei Wuxian talking to Young Master Jiang and Young Master Nie about their duel. If he wanted to bring back this memory, he’d need to attack Wei Wuxian.

Gliding from the roof he moved his sword to the front and landed the Emperor’s Smile on the ground letting it break in front of Wei Wuxian.

“My Emperor’s Smile!! Why’d you do that? How could you?” He fake pouted before dodging Lan Wangji‘s attack. The two went back and forth for a while before Wei Wuxian spoke up.

“You broke my Emperor’s Smile jars and now you want to push me to death? It’s only the first day of a new year at Cloud Recesses don’t tell me you want to commit a murder scene.” He died once, for him it was okay to talk about death as many times as he wanted, because he’s been through it, and it’s not as bad as people make it sound.

On the other hand, these words that were meant to be a joke hurt Lan Wangji more than any physical pain could. To joke about death, this didn’t happen last time, though the events were the same, what caused the words to change? Lan Wangji paused for a split second when he heard some branches that fell off the tree crack.

“Go back. Do not come out again,” he rushed Wei Wuxian back to the insides of Cloud Recesses and jumped into the opposite direction of the noise.

‘This didn’t happen before. But I still have one jar of my Emperor’s Smile! Everything works out I guess.’ Wei Wuxian’s final thoughts before going back to his room to taste the delicacy of Emperor’s Smile.

Meanwhile, Lan Wangji went back to Cloud Recesses and into the direction of the sound.

“Young Master Jiang, it is past curfew, will you go accept punishment with Wei Ying?” As Lan Wangji spoke up, the man he called out revealed himself and looked straight at Lan Wangji.

“I just wanted to see if you were going to meet Wei Wuxian tonight, that’s all.” He averted his eyes from Lan Wangji’s gaze, “Don’t think I was worried about your plans, we have our own goals.”

“Of course not Young Master Jiang, I was on patrol. Please head back now, you might take punishment with Wei Ying.” For a man who was tasked with saving the person he loved, he was still living by family rules, and that did not change, “Though this never happened last time, consider this a warning since I brought you into my problems.”

Lan Wangji started to walk away and go back to his position, before Jiang Cheng grabbed his sleeves.

“Wait…hear me out.”

Notes:

To clarify, yes! Wei Wuxian did also go back in time, and of course he’s oblivious to his feelings so please deal with poor old me. I’ll be helping out my previous school next week and school will start the week after so I’ll try to compensate!!

If you spot any mistakes or have any questions please comment them!

I’ll be releasing a AU - College oneshot later!!

Chapter 4: My Obsessions

Summary:

Behind all three of their surface goals, what is the real meaning behind all of it, in the end, who are we really saving?

Chapter Text

“Wait...hear me out.”

Jiang Cheng looked at Lan Wangji with fear of what he was going to say, as if he knew the answer, as if he didn’t want to hear declination.

“I don’t know what type of relationship you deem yourself to have with Wei Wuxian, nor do I care. Wei Wuxian is still my brother in this life, he and his dog were the caused of my family’s death but even if we fix everything, after I save my family, I will take Wei Wuxian back with me. I hope you agree to this.”

Lan Wangji froze at first at the request, but then his attention span became more clear as he gave his response to Jiang Cheng.

“We agree on saving your clan, but I cannot agree to you bringing Wei Ying back with you. He may be your brother yet it was you who led the siege against him. I went back in time to save Wei Ying, that has been my only goal ever since I got here.”

“You...damn...” Jiang Cheng was always the type to curse all his anger out, but being refused yet attacked with the truth, indeed it was him who led the siege, but had he known he could have this opportunity to save his family... “I understand. Please tell me if you plan on repeating what happened the first time. I hope your sect will take your time to build defense against Qishan Wen Sect too, I will talk to my parents about upgrading our Sect’s defense.”

“Yes, I will talk to Brother, I have a request of you too, Young Master Jiang.”

“What could the almighty Hanguang-Jun get from me?”

“After the siege ended, I found Wei Ying’s child. I hope you can find him for me instead of killing him off. For the sake of Wei Ying, I hope you let Qishan Wen Sect’s doctor and her brother off your list as well.”

The moment Lan Wangji mentioned a child, Jiang Cheng’s face dropped. Child? When did he have a child? Where was that child during the siege and how did it survive? So many questions led to the same answers.

“I think I misheard you, Wei Wuxian doesn’t have a child.”

“Adopted. Child of the Wen sibling’s cousin. Wei Ying said.”

“Alright alright, now I must be heading back before I actually get a punishment don’t you think? In the morning I will follow up with formally introducing you with Brother Huaisang to Wei Wuxian.”

“Mn,” all that was said before Lan Wangji returned to his patrolling.

...

Wei Wuxian looked out the window from his room with his jar of Emperor’s Smile by his side, staring at the moon that overlooked the world.

“Life is going exactly the same as it did the first time! Lan Zhan was a bit weird this time though... he actually let me go! Ah...if only I died on good terms with him. In the end I’ll just hurt everyone around me, if life is repeating itself, can I do anything to change it or am I really just here to see what I’ve done in my first life?” Surprisingly Wei Wuxian managed to say all this while drinking his Emperor’s Smile, not a single stutter, not a single pause.

“Speaking of...in my last life I took care of A-Yuan. If in this world we bring down Qishan Wen Sect in another way, will I still be able to keep A-Yuan by my side? That’s right! Attempt the impossible is what Yunmeng Jiang Sect is all about! I’ll find A-Yuan, save Wen Ning and Wen Qing! Hurray for a successful plan!”

He began to drink again, while turning his body he saw himself in the mirror, he stared at what reflected in front of him until he grew tired of himself.

“Ah... when I was living in Yiling, I looked way older and worse than now. Hard to believe I really looked like this...without my golden core I had no complexion and felt way more tired than now. I wonder what I would have looked like with my golden core in a few years. I really was the worst person in history...no wonder even Jiang Cheng couldn’t take it.”

Even though he was always smiling, no one knew what he went through being by himself with A-Yuan, a child who could barely understand math, let alone feelings. While being in Yiling he became gaunt and starved for days trying to give A-Yuan the best treatment he could have.

“It’s 4:50 already? Well...it is hard to fall asleep knowing you’ve hurt so many people, this really is pain worse than dying. Staying in Yiling I never had an accurate sleeping schedule anyways, even while being in...” he paused before he continued, silently asking himself if he really had the right to say the place where Uncle Jiang raised him, and he was their death, “Lotus Pier...”

A grieving smile shown on him as the sun started to rise and he heard the other disciples opening their doors. His shown no actual signs of eye bags like he did when he was the Yiling Patriarch, but he felt his complexion worsen just by staying up. Pampering his face for a bit, he walked out and ran into Jiang Cheng.

“Ready for class with that grumpy guy?” Instantly popping off a question towards his brother, Wei Wuxian didn’t deny that his brother’s complexion looks bad like his, “You didn’t sleep?”

“No, I did. You... forgot to tie your hair. Unless that’s what you’re doing today, then never mind.”

The fact that Wei Wuxian had his hair down for the first time ever while being a disciple at Cloud Recesses really shocked Jiang Cheng. In their last life, Wei Wuxian never wanted to put his hair down as it was a distraction, but he didn’t feel like cutting it either. When he became the Yiling Patriarch and practiced demonic cultivation, he let his hair down everyday.

“Yea, I just want to keep it down today. Look! It’s Brother Huaisang!”

He hadn’t even noticed his hair wasn’t tied up, though he felt it was probably because during his time as the Yiling Patriarch, it didn’t matter to him anymore, and right now, even his traits from the future are showing.

“Brother Wei. Brother Jiang.” He flipped open his fan as he covered his face with it, “You guys don’t look too good.”

Both brothers froze for a bit as they thought about how Nie Huaisang had never asked about their complexion in the past life during this moment. Of course neither could bring it up, yet with their similar personalities, they concluded: The future will change as long as their actions do.

“Don’t worry, we’re both fine. Lets go to class before that old man comes get us.” Wei Wuxian brushed off the question before Nie Huaisang could pry further.

“By the way guys, I heard that there is someone here you shouldn’t provoke.” It’s happening...

“Who? The old man? I thought everyone knew that.”

“No...no...it’s his favorite nephew. Who also patrols Cloud Recesses, Lan Wangji.”

At this moment in time, they will walk into the room and see Lan Wangji glaring at Wei Wuxian, but why did his gaze look more gentle compared to the first time? The more Wei Wuxian looked at him, he tried to divert the attention to a face palming Jiang Cheng.

“Brother Wei. He’s onto you. Good luck.” Before Nie Huaisang could slowly walk away, Wei Wuxian grabbed onto him.

“No he’s not! He doesn’t look that mad, rather it looks like he’s staring at Jiang Cheng!” Wei Wuxian pushed Jiang Chang forward. This of course suddenly contradicts their conclusion from earlier, well, mainly Jiang Cheng thinks so.

“What? No, are you blind? Should I ask mother and father to send you back?” Jiang Cheng pushed the hand that was on his shoulder off as he sat down and looked towards Lan Wangji, the two giving a slight nod to each other.

“I told you they might have a thing going on Brother Huaisang.”

“I think you’re right...” the response Nie Huaisang have made Wei Wuxian giggle, it’s been so long since he was able to laugh like this. It made him really wonder, just how much longer he can be this cheerful.

Meanwhile, for Lan Wangji, who had heard everything everything Wei Wuxian had said, he had stopped listening to his uncle’s lecture during class and found that nothing could hurt more than hearing Wei Wuxian misunderstand him and Jiang Cheng. Yet again, why is Wei Wuxian acting differently now? Why is his hair down, why does it look like he didn’t rest after being sent away. All these questions and no one will ever be able to answer them the way Wei Wuxian can.

Chapter Text

Class with Lan Qiren wasn’t anything special. Other than the fact that Wei Wuxian manages to once again get himself in trouble for bringing up the crooked path, forcing him into copying the book with Lan Wangji supervising him. Perhaps the spare glances Lan Wangji made at Wei Wuxian were. These glances however, go unnoticed by Wei Wuxian, but seen all too well by the other Jade of Lan. For a man who had his brother at prime in his priorities list, seeing the way his brother looked at the other cultivator, he couldn’t have mistaken his judgement. It was the look of longing and grieving, but what was he mourning for? When was the last time he had saw his brother give this look, it felt like a decade, the feeling of their mother’s passing is once engraved in his mind again. By the time these thoughts slowly began to take over the mind, the moon begins to rise and shrouds the sky with darkness.

As much as Yiling Patriarch rang horror in everyone’s ears, descriptions of how the man scares children off in the night, even capturing some and keeping them as their lackey, Wei Wuxian was nothing like the rumors deemed. His hands slowly dragged along the wood walls in his room. This feeling was completely different than how he felt back in Yiling. This was not for him to enjoy though, not the Yiling Patriarch who hoped for family and a place to call home, rather, a teenage Wei Wuxian who was always shameless, and never cared how far time took them, until he really lost everything.

He sat on his light bed, gently touching the things surrounding him, treasuring every moment.

‘The Yiling Patriarch rules over all our nightmares. He is anything but good. The Jiang Family did everything for him, and look what happened. That man is nothing but equivalent of a demon king. You must never head down that path.’

Wei Wuxian doesn’t understand. He’s human as well, isn’t he? Demonic cultivator or not, the man still had a beating heart, still had what the people disregarded from him, feelings. A man who rules over all nightmares yet now constantly gets nightmares all on his own. There’s nothing but hypocrisy everywhere in people’s words. Everyone had judged him, the demonic path, the corrupted path, the forbidden path. So many names for one type of skill, yet even during this time, he cannot deny that only one person stood by his side, continued to support him, tried their best to give him a shoulder even when he was the most wanted and hated man alive back then. His shijie. His senior sister who helped him, everything she did out of her kindness and bond, yet she still died. He couldn’t bring her back, no remains except her dead body and a boy he had no right to call his nephew. Maybe it is now that he realizes, he’s brought back to this time to see everything—including him—have their downfall.

...

”Wangji.” Night falls on everyone but the Twin Jade of Lan. With over piling work, Lan Xichen had no choice but to break some rules to get it all done.

”Brother.” His voice remains stiff, yet spoke with respect. Putting his brush down, he looks up to the person receiving his words, making full eye contact.

”I could not help but notice your curiosity today. You looked like you were staring at what seems to be Young Master Wei. He seems very different from the file Uncle and I went over.” Lan Xichen flashed his signature grin before finishing a grade for his Uncle’s students.

Silence filled the air but that does not stop Lan Xichen from knowing what his brother wants. After all, who else can read Lan Wangji like Lan Xichen can?

”What’s wrong, Wangji? Did you want to see his file?” Lan Xichen’s eyes had met Lan Wangji’s then before heading back inside his chambers and then coming out with a double sided sheet of paper, not even waiting for his brother’s response, “Here you go,” it is dreadfully past our bedtime, will you be on patrol today?

”En. I will go over this later. Thank you brother,” he cupped his hands and bowed before heading out.

...

The paper wasn’t anything special, considering that he already knew most of the stuff written on this paper, though they claimed for Wei Wuxian to be bubbly and cheerful, he showed none of that.

Lan Wangji isn’t much of a talker. This is a fact, his aloofness and glares caused many tensions and silence within Cloud Recesses. An observant man himself, he was confused. Very confused. Today they start copying the book. He couldn’t express it but his thoughts were filled with the idea of speaking up first this time. Talking to Wei Wuxian first, he didn’t want Wei Wuxian to think he hated him. He wanted the man to believe everything he knows he’ll have to say, when he tells Wei Wuxian the same words he exchanged during the Sunshot Campaign, “Come back to Gusu with me.” Jiang Cheng is a reliable leader, having rebuilt Lotus Pier on his own, but he was never emotionally committed. In case saving the Jiang Family ever failed, Lan Wangji knew he could have gained Wei Wuxian’s trust one way or the other.

Heading straight to Library Pavilion after class, he patiently waited for Wei Wuxian while copying a few scripts himself. Not long after, the other came running in, a tad bit late, nonetheless, he wasn’t here. You can do it Lan Wangji. Start the conversation.

”Sit. Start writing.” That’s not what you’re suppose to say!! He felt like he mentally wanted to hit himself, “You’re so stiff! Hey hey! Look at me!! Let’s be friends! Are you still ignoring me? Wait!! Hmm, what should I call you to get your attention? Wangji? Lan Wangji? Lan Zhan! Lan-gongzi? I got it! Lan er-ge!” Wei Wuxian snickered to himself before crouching and falling to the floor, laughing. To Wei Wuxian, it was new stuff to Lan Wangji, the whole teasing and such. It felt far too long ago that he could teased Lan Wangji like this.

When he looked back up to see Lan Wangji’s reaction, all he got was a lost and mournful look. Did he do something wrong? This is all so different from what happened, what’s gone wrong? He knew that back then, his relationship with Lan Wangji wasn’t the best, especially when said man kept on pushing him to go back with him. He didn’t want to go back, he knew he was unwanted, so why must he obey and quietly go back? Even after his death, he never wronged Lan Wangji for anything of the sort, simply accepting his departure from the world without a single care. He wanted to improve their relationship, he wanted to stop the Wens from murdering Jiang Cheng’s family. He wanted to stay away from Demonic Cultivation. It was only during the Siege that he realized how corrupted he really was, but now it’s never too late to start over.

“H...hey, are you okay? Did I say something wrong?” He wanted answers now, how does Lan Wangji really feel, it’s only been a few days since they met again as teenagers, but he didn’t want to live in regrets anymore. He frowned and stared at the table distancing him from Lan Wangji as he spoke out the next few words, “Do you really hate me?”

Silence had filled the air then, with Lan Wangji’s look that had shown confusion, way more expression than Wei Wuxian has ever seen, I guess he was right, Lan Wangji really does hate him.

”Perhaps we’re not on good terms, considering I did break so many rules on my first day being here and all,” he was fidgeting around, ready to be stung with the truth, “if I’m really bothering you, I’ll move back.”

In all honestly, the last thing Wei Wuxian wanted was to move back, but he didn’t want to force a friendship like he thought he did in the past. Although it would pain his heart to not have someone to tease, he didn’t know why his heart felt so empty when the thought of refusal came up, he was willing to accept it all. Maybe the pristine Lan Wangji just doesn’t want to befriend him.

“Ah...I’m sorry, I’ll go back to copying then,” he stood back up and spun around to the direction of his table and started walking before he felt something tug his sleeve. It was so quiet he didn’t realize it until he turned his head around to see Lan Wangji, left hand on the table’s surface to keep his body hovering over the table balanced, the right hand forming grasping onto the sleeve. With their eyes locked, Lan Wangji stared Wei Wuxian down so intensely he felt like he could see the soul, throwing a few words out of his mouth, tone strong and determined,

”I do not hate you, Wei Ying.”

they are not calling each other by birth name yet, but the ending is on purpose :)
