Work Text:
Ochako had dated before. She had hugged, held hands, and cuddled. She had even kissed. Of course, she hadn’t done more than that, but she had some experience at least. She wasn’t entirely a novice who was completely innocent, even if what she’d done probably didn’t count as not-innocent either. The point was, she knew what she was doing more or less. She wasn’t naive.
And yet that didn’t stop her from feeling anxious around Momo right now.
The two of them had been officially dating for two weeks. Ochako still couldn’t believe it. They had been dancing around one another for a while, but she’d been sure that Momo only thought of her as a friend. Plus, it had taken Ochako far too long to even realize that her feelings for the other girl were more than friendly. She hadn’t considered it until suddenly they were there and she couldn’t ignore them.
How was she supposed to know that she also liked girls when she’d only noticed boys before? Or maybe she had noticed them before but hadn’t realized they were romantic feelings or crushes?
It turned out that agonizing over a crush that would never come to be was for nothing. She spent weeks overanalyzing simple gestures, questioning if she was being too touchy-feely, thinking that maybe she was making feelings up after her short-lived relationship with Deku fizzled out. And then, confident as she had been in the beginning, Momo asked her if she wanted to go on a date, and Ochako’s brain short-circuited like Kaminari’s, and she floated herself to the ceiling.
Instead of beating around the bush like she’d seen a lot of girls struggle through in relationships, they had both decided to cut corners and make things official after the second date. Neither one of them wanted to be confused about where they stood with each other. Ochako had admired and adored Momo before this, but now that they were actually girlfriends, it was a different sort of feeling, one that often left her blushing and beaming.
Except after two weeks of dating - in which they had held hands, cuddled on the couch, played with each other’s hair, and simply existed in each other’s space closer than normal - they had not yet kissed, and Ochako didn’t know what to do. Well, she knew exactly what she wanted to do - she wanted to kiss her girlfriend (her girlfriend!) - but she was strangely nervous too. Was it different because it was a girl? What if she was bad and Momo decided this wasn’t working out? No, no, Momo was too polite. If Ochako was bad, she wouldn’t say anything.
“Are you okay, Ochako?” Momo asked, snapping her out of her thoughts.
“Wha-?” Ochako blinked down at the textbooks and notebooks strewed across Momo’s ridiculously large and plush bed. It was so nice compared to hers, but it definitely took up a lot of room too. “Oh, sorry, I guess I just got lost in thought.” She smiled and scratched the back of her head. “Ectoplasm’s math kind of does that to me sometimes. It’s never really been my strongest suit.”
Unlike Momo, who was literally a genius. To her, math was nothing but an average part of her life. She had to be both mathematically and scientifically aware of so many things in order for her quirk to work. So many people saw her and thought she just created things from her body, but it was so much more than that. She had to know the ins and outs of everything she created; she had to know equations, chemicals, and more. Honestly, Ochako didn’t know how she did it when third year math confused her.
“It becomes a bit mind-numbing after a while,” Momo admitted. “Did you want to take a break?”
“No, no, I’m sorry.” Ochako sighed. “You offered to help me, and I wasn’t even paying attention.”
Momo bit her lip. “Maybe I’m not the best teacher.”
“You’re great!” Ochako insisted. “I’m just…” She peered at Momo. With her hair down and clad in a soft pair of pajamas, she really was beautiful. It shouldn’t have been possible for someone to be so pretty, but Ochako couldn’t help but be taken away by her. All that time she’d thought it was jealousy when it really had been something else entirely. “I’m just distracted, is all.”
“Distracted?” Momo set her notebook down. “By what?”
For a moment, Ochako thought to come up with a story. She couldn’t tell the truth. Maybe she would come off as forward or too much. Maybe Momo wasn’t ready. Confident as she had been in asking Ochako out and then when they decided to make things official, Momo was also still shy, especially when it came to attention. She thought it came from the way many boys reacted around her. They’d get in her space and make weird, uncomfortable comments. When complimenting her, Ochako always tried to focus on things other than her looks, even if she was so, so pretty.
However, after looking into Momo’s genuinely concerned eyes, Ochako blurted out, “I was thinking about kissing you.” Her cheeks flushed red while Momo blushed and raised her eyebrows in surprise. Oh my god, what had she been thinking? Ochako slapped her hands over her cheeks. “I-I mean- I wasn’t just thinking about kissing you. Wait! That sounds worse. I wasn’t thinking about doing anything more than that. I mean, we’ve only held hands and hugged and I don’t-”
“I would really like it if we kissed,” Momo cut in quietly. She was trying to keep her voice steady, but Ochako could see the way her chest was rapidly rising and falling.
“Oh. Okay.” Ochako set her textbook aside and sat up on her knees. Momo folded up her notebook, but then she didn’t seem to know what to do with her hands. The two of them stared at each other, their cheeks equally pink, until finally they burst into giggles. “What are we doing?”
Momo put a hand over her mouth. “We’re being so silly!”
“It’s not like we’ve never kissed anyone before,” Ochako added.
“Ah, well, actually…” Momo dropped her hand and glanced down at her lap.
Ochako stared at her girlfriend. “You’ve never…?” Momo shook her head. “What about Todoroki?”
Momo laughed. “Ochako, he’s ace .”
“Seriously?” Ochako sat back on her heels and blinked. “Okay, you know, in retrospect, that’s really obvious, but I didn’t even think about it. I just figured since you two were so close…”
“It’s easy to be close with him,” Momo admitted, giving a simple shrug. “We didn’t have to worry about each other. If people assumed something was going on, it took out half the hassle.”
She still struggled to look at Ochako, but she wasn’t blushing as much. Honestly, Ochako still found it hard to believe that Momo had never kissed anyone, but at the same time, that also made sense. She was so uncomfortable by all the attention boys gave her. And Todoroki was Todoroki. No one bothered her when he was around, not even Mineta, who he had threatened in their second year so viciously that Mineta ran if Todoroki caught him so much as looking in Momo’s direction. Hell, part of the reason why she hadn’t thought Momo liked her in that way was because she had something going on with him.
Taking a deep breath, Momo raised her head to meet eyes with Ochako and smiled. “But I would be more than happy to have my first kiss with you. It’s easy to be with you too.”
How could Ochako not kiss her after that? She leaned forward to took Momo’s face in her hands, her pinky fingers lifted, and pressed her lips against hers. They were so much softer than Ochako could have imagined. Unlike Deku, whose lips had often been rough and chapped, Momo’s were warm and soft. They were the perfect fit. Instead of one long kiss, they kissed multiple times, slow and gentle, as if exploring one another, switching from longer kisses to short pecks.
After a minute or two, Ochako pulled away and sat back on her heels. “So, um…”
Momo touched her lips and hummed thoughtfully. “When I create things with my quirk, I usually have to try a few times before I get it right.” Her eyes flickered to Ochako’s, and there was an amused light in them that made Ochako giggle again. “We should try that again - just to be sure.”
“For science,” Ochako joked.
She wouldn’t complain about that at all. Kissing her girlfriend was a lot more fun than studying math.
