Work Text:

The last few weeks feel as if they were a dream.

Was Sadie really shot?

Did Carter really go viral?

Jack did not realize how long it would take his mind to wrap around everything. He can’t speak for others, but all of it seems almost surreal.

“You okay, Jack?” asked Jaime, holding a water bottle in each hand.

“Better than before,” he answered, accepting a bottle, but no closer to making sense of everything.

Jaime smiled, sitting down on the bench beside him. “How are your friends doing?”

Of course Jamie knew about Sadie and Carter. The whole world saw Sadie's speech at the Black Lives Matter rally, where she delivered powerful words that had left many of them in awe. Jack could never say that he understood what his colored friends go through, but that day...when he listened to her words...

He felt he was beginning to see.

Just a small peak.

It was Carter's video that Jamie had shown him while they were running some errands for the Kane siblings while Sadie had still been in her coma that he was forced to see. His usually strong friend was reduced to body shuddering sobs.

Jack sighed, giving Jamie a weak smile back. “Sadie is awake and Carter says therapy has been helping.”

“That’s good!”

Jack hummed, staring at his unopened water bottle. His thoughts drifting to the fact that Carter shouldn't have to go to therapy.

“Jack?”

“It’s just that,” started Jack, but found himself at a loss of words for a split second. “It’s just that...it all seems like a dream. Ya know? I guess I’m still processing it.”

Jaime nodded, wrapping a friendly arm around Jack’s shoulder. “And that’s okay, buddy.”

Notes:

It's okay to not know what to feel when confronted with something new, good or bad. Take your time to process it all. Don't force it.
