    In an alternate universe, The Enterprise crew cannot find the needed Horonium to restart the portal and send Mariner and Boimler back to the future. They are left stranded, and to prevent them from babbling and affecting the timeline majorly, Starfleet transfers them to a remote base in a mostly uncharted planet.

    The only other intelligent life forms there are a small colony, a society of retired hermits. The duo is tasked with studying and cataloguing the planet's geological formation and it's flora and fauna. How long will it be before one or both of them have a total breakdown? What lies in their future?
