Summary
Four years after the fall of Ba Sing Se, the world still mourns Katara as dead.
To the Fire Nation, Katara became just another casualty of war. To her friends, she is a ghost lost within the crystal catacombs of Ba Sing Se yet whispers have begun spreading across the Fire Nation of a spirit known as the Painted Lady, a veiled woman with ocean-blue eyes who appears in the moonlight to heal and protect those in need.
The war rages on as Ozai has crowned himself Phoenix King after Sotzin's comet, leaving Zuko to rule in his stead as Fire Lord while the Fire Nation tightens its grip across the remaining nations.
When Zuko is sent to investigate mysterious occurrences at a small fishing village, he finds himself face to face with the woman behind the legend. She moves like a memory he cannot escape.

When Sokka moves from Alaska to Massachusetts with his family, he doesn’t expect to end up next door to two loud neighbours who all they seem to do is fight. He definitely doesn’t expect to befriend Zuko, a quiet, angry boy who makes Sokka feel how he’s never felt before.
Together, they’ll show eachother what love feels like, and how close that feels to pain.
All Zuko knows is how to fight. It doesn’t matter if the love heals or burns; it’s all a fight, a fight he can’t win, but he can’t give up. He doesn’t know if he can trust this new stranger with bright blue eyes and a far too trusting smile. Zuko already has a life, a life with Zhao. And Sokka threatens all of that.
The feeling of love, desire, creates such impossible happiness, but it is all-consuming, and can’t be held. Like trying to capture the sun with cupped hands, but the warmth it provides is so beautiful, and so temporary, because if he stays like this, he’ll burn.

Between the crushing weight of the crown and the ghosts of an old exile, they have built a sanctuary of reports and tea, of restrained touches and shared silence. But inside the suffocating heat of the Royal Caldera, the distance between ruler and advisor is beginning to collapse. Behind closed doors, amidst the scent of cedar and cooling ink, neither is brave enough to name the hunger that has lived too long in the dark, and neither is strong enough to keep it there.
I mostly wrote this because I had to weave Korora into the ATLA universe and the idea would not leave me alone. I’m still finding the shape of the story, so canon may be followed, bent, or quietly set on fire.

Zuko laughs despite himself, and Rin looks pleased that her dark joke has landed even as Aang and Katara both raise their eyebrows at Zuko, visibly startled; he supposes it’s because he can probably count on one hand how often he’s laughed in front of them before.
[In which going to Hira'a to search for Zuko's mother results in the Gaang (plus Azula) encountering an odd young woman in town with unnatural ties to the spirits in the Forgetful Valley. She also makes Zuko smile a lot, which is just as unexpected.]

After splitting up with Aang, Katara has a lot to think about. Fortunately, the long and arduous process of rebuilding the Southern Water Tribe lends her plenty of time for reflection. Unfortunately, being the Avatar's companion-and eventually girlfriend-for the past two-ish years means that a cohesive identity is hard to come by. That, plus finding her place in the Tribe, fixing her relationship with her father, and reviving Southern-Style Waterbending, Katara's got a lot on her plate to say the least.
More often than not, the world is quite literally falling down around Zuko's shoulders. Even though a year has passed since the war ended, peace between the Fire Nation and the rest of the world is hanging on by a thread. That alone would be a lot to handle, but with the search for his mother, managing his sister's rehabilitation, and making sure his father isn't up to anything nefarious, Zuko is drowning in responsibility. He needs some help putting out the fires that pop up as fast as he can spot them.
When their paths cross, Zuko and Katara learn to navigate their post-war worlds. Together.

Dying and being reborn in a world with reversed gender roles as a man where I had to get multiple wives was definitely not planned. Dying and being reborn in a mishmash of anime, manga, and TV worlds? I might have planned that if I could have.
So now that I was reborn into this completely strange, yet familiar world, I had to live in it, but I certainly didn't have much to complain about.
