Summary
He survived two-and-a-half years as General Fong’s training dummy, months as Zhao’s prisoner, and weeks as a captive aboard the Chief of the Southern Water Tribe’s ship, all the while refusing to let his father’s cold, firelit eyes be the last he saw of the man. There was no way these children would keep him from going home.
"Yes," Zuko lied. 'I’ll help you defeat my father."
Or: After three years of imprisonment, Zuko escapes, just in time to arrive at the climax of the Invasion of Ba Sing Se. From there, he travels with the Avatar's team - first as a political prisoner and then, maybe (and indignantly), as Aang's firebending teacher.
(Zuko wonders why Agni let him suffer in the cold for so many years only to make him the Avatar's mentor. Destiny is a cruel, complicated thing. It takes him a while to figure out his.)

Summary
"We're going to be alcoholics by the time we're thirty," Sokka sighed.
"You think we'll live to be thirty?" Zuko asked, honestly thrilled. Sokka had pretty good instincts. Perhaps Zuko should reevaluate his long term goals. He could start by having long term goals.
A more likely alternative was that Sokka was just a hopeless optimist. It just went to show, you never truly saw another man until you stood shoulder to shoulder against a fleet of war balloons intent on raining death upon the city you loved.
Zuko was just a normal guy with normal interests. He liked theatre, burglary, crotchety ostrich horses, watching the Blind Bandit crush her opponents in a glorious display of skill and violence... just your standard banished prince things. It wasn't his fault he kept stumbling into rebellions and uncovering long-buried secrets. Fine, maybe freeing the prisoners was on him, but he was completely innocent of all other treason. Zuko was his father's loyal son. He'd never betray his nation.
Or:
Uncle Iroh took a more creative approach to fostering Zuko's appreciation of other cultures. Now it's everyone's Problem. -

Summary
Asozu never quite liked being a princess. The way the dresses dragged, the compliments that sounded like they grated on her ears, the Coos from her mother on how she looked just like her when she was younger. It made Asozu feel vaguely sick every time. But Asozu wasn't a traitor. She could never be, and all of her thoughts were treasonous. Better to ignore them. For as long as she can bear it.
OR
The thing Zuko wanted most, with all of her heart, was to be a boy.

Summary
“So who is Zuko, really?” Toph asks. “I thought he was just a regular Firebender who didn't like you very much. I didn't know his sister was favored by the Fire Lord.”
“His sister is definitely favored by the Fire Lord,” Sokka says irritably. “She was his guard during the Eclipse. And she's incredibly loyal, just like Zuko is. That is, was.”
“No wonder, with that name,” Katara mutters. “What else would you expect from siblings named after the Fire Prince and Princess?”
In which everything stays the same, apart from the fact that the Gaang doesn’t realize their local firebender is actually Prince Zuko until coronation day.

Summary
After being burned by his father for refusing to fight him in an Agni Kai, thirteen-year-old Prince Zuko wants only two things: to restore his honor and re-earn his father's love, and to find some way to heal his face. So when a Fire Sage tells him there's a mystic spring deep under the castle that can grant him both things, he listens.
The next thing he knows, he wakes up in the middle of a city with foul air, technology beyond his wildest dreams, and lunatics on every corner. Shortly after he firebends to protect himself, a man dressed mostly in black catches him.
Who knew that being sent to another realm would be the best thing that ever happened to him?

Summary
Ozai stepped closer, his shadow falling over Zuko like a shroud. A large, unyielding hand settled on the back of Zuko’s neck, the fingers coiling into the roots of his dark hair. “Weakness must be purged, Zuko,” Ozai murmured, his voice closer now, a silken threat. “Disobedience, cleansed. You will remember the punishment your idiotcy caused.”
Fear, cold and sharp, pierced through Zuko’s chest. He knew what was coming. His eyes widened, fixing on the dark surface of the water, and his heart hammered a frantic rhythm against his ribs. He tried to pull away, a small, desperate whimper escaping him, but Ozai’s grip was unyielding.
Then, with a swift, brutal motion, his head was plunged beneath the water.

Summary
His thumb grazed the skin of her forearm, just below her elbow .
The shock was electric. It wasn't pain; it was simply feeling—a sensation so overwhelming it threatened to buckle his knees. The warmth, the softness of the skin, the simple, undeniable reality of another human being resting against him.
He hadn't been touched like this since he was a child, before the Agni Kai, before the scar. He had forgotten what it felt like to be near someone whose intent was not to harm, command, or manipulate.
His breath hitched again, shallow and tight.
Toph stirred then. Not in fear, but recognition. As an earthbender, she was attuned to vibrations, to the shifts in a person's core. She didn't need eyes to see the sudden, desperate tremor that ran the length of his arms.
"Hey, Sparky," she whispered, her voice low. "You good?"
The question was gentle, devoid of mockery. It was worse than an insult.

Summary
“Stop crying.”
Zuko tried; he clamped his teeth down on his tongue until he tasted copper. But the tears were beyond his control, a betrayal of his own body. They streamed down his face, a visible admission of his smallness.
The slap came without warning. It was sharp, instantaneous, and loud, cracking through the vast silence of the training hall. It spun Zuko’s head sideways, sending a white flash of pain through his skull.
He stumbled back, clutching his cheek. The pain was shocking, but the abruptness of the violence was worse.
“I told you to stop crying,” Ozai stated, towering over him. He lowered his voice, making the words intimate and horrifying. “Tears are a plea for pity. You will never beg for anything. You will never show me this weakness again. Do you understand, Prince Zuko?”

Summary
“Hey! Sparky!” she yelled, her voice cutting through the lingering peace. She jumped up, her bare feet already moving, mapping the trajectory of his fall. “Twinkletoes! Katara! Something’s wrong with Sparky!”
Aang, who had been meditating peacefully in a corner, snapped his eyes open. Katara, washing her face at a nearby fountain, turned, her face tight with concern. Sokka, halfway down a hall, stopped dead.
“What? What’s wrong, Toph?” Katara demanded, rushing towards her.
“He just… fell,” Toph said, already striding purposefully towards the western wing, knowing exactly where Zuko’s specific seismic signature had vanished. “Hard. Something’s wrong. Really wrong.”
