Ser Lyonel came to stand beside her, antler crown still balanced precariously upon his head, peering along with her at the hedge knight’s retreating frame.
“I think the Gods have their way whether we care for it or not,” Lenaia said, her voice measured. “Do you truly think he stands no chance in the tourney?”
“Ah, so you were listening,” Ser Lyonel noted, snorting. “Charming, isn’t he?”
“I find him so,” Lenaia admitted, earning her a judgemental look that she ignored. “The tourney, then?”
Ser Lyonel let out a long sigh, lantern-light casting shadows on his face as he pondered, “Who am I to question the Gods?”
Lenaia crossed her arms over herself, squinting up at the sky as a rain began to fall, nodding sagely, “The Gods did, by the way.”
Ser Lyonel turned to her, puzzled. “Did what?”
“Created jousting,” she said, as if it were obvious. “They created all of what we use to harm each other.”
Ser Lyonel hummed in thought, nodding sagely too, before raising his shoulder in a half-shrug. “Still entertaining though, isn’t it?”
Lenaia only smiled.-

duncan the tall has never once in his life believed he deserved anything good. lyonel baratheon has never once in his life met someone he couldn't charm into comfort. and then they meet each other and it goes extremely badly for both of them.
lyonel sees duncan immediately. like, embarrassingly immediately, and spends the entire story quietly making room for a man who has no idea how to take up space that's been offered freely. duncan spends the entire story watching for the catch that isn't coming and slowly, painfully, running out of reasons to keep watching.
it's a slow burn. there's a tourney, there's a war, trial by combat, separation and there's twenty years of aftermath. there are two men who are completely different in every way that matters to the world and completely necessary to each other in every way that doesn't. there's a lot of not saying things. there's a lot of saying things with your hands or your silence or by staying in the room slightly longer than you needed to.
the whole thing is basically: what happens when someone sees you accurately, before you've earned it, and doesn't look away.
