“Belonging is something far more visceral than love. Love is a powerful feeling, but it remains, in some way, airy. Belonging, instead, is what activates all our sensations toward the subject in question.
It is a more intense feeling, deeper, almost physical. It is what makes the chest ache, the ribcage, the throat.
It is the sensation of possessing someone… but also of being someone’s. It is not only love: it is pure need for the other, both mental and physical.
It is the desire, almost banal and savage, for physical intimacy—hands, lips, flesh. But also the mental necessity of the other: a sharp conversation, a heated exchange, even a furious argument.If pure belonging is based on a positive need for the other, secondary belonging becomes more visceral, at times morbid and aggressive. The other becomes pure necessity, and their needs, their desires, fade into the background.
It is a wilder part, made of instinct.
