Summary
“These trials are meant not just to break you, L Lawliet, but to make you new again. To punish, and to heal. Close the phone and walk out the door.”
The unknown caller hung up, and L considered his options, crouched on the grimy floor, heart ready to burst out of his chest.
Compliance would be best, lest he lose his other eye. L stumbled to the door, bloody hands slipping on the doorknob before swinging it back on its hinges with a loud creak.
On the other side, Yagami Light jumped at the noise, spinning around to meet L’s… eye.
“Ryuzaki!?”
…And L thought this day couldn’t get any worse.

Summary
This is my retelling of Death Note: Another Note in an alternative universe.
The Los Angeles heat didn’t arrive so much as it hung thick, indifferent, a film over the mouth that made talking feel like the start of drowning. The second scene was a one-bedroom on Orange Grove: a stucco building the color of cheap oatmeal, two floors, bars on the windows for an optimism that wasn’t earned. By nine in the morning, uniforms were loudening the air with short phrases that all meant the same thing: nothing adds up.

“Don’t say his name again. Don’t give it breath.”
L grit his teeth. “You already did.”
Watari knelt in front of him, grasped L’s quivering hands like the boy’s heart was fragile flame. Seconds away from extinguishing himself.
“Then forget it. For your sake.” Watari’s voice cracked. “I will never speak of him again. I swear that to you, L. Not his name. Not his history. Not even if it kills me.”

Light & L are soulmates.Against all odds, against all reason, against their will.
Across Japan, bonded pairs are dying, severed by a contract killer known only as Kira. A black-market ghost who murders for hire…without ever appearing on the scene.
Recruited onto the task force chasing the culprit, Light and L are bound tighter than ever. The problem?
Each thinks the other is Kira.
The bigger problem?
The real one is watching.
In a world where love is law, and bonds are sacred, what happens when the greatest injustice…is wanting your soulmate gone?

Summary
What if Light killed L early on in the story? And what if L didn't stay dead? What if Kagome, a 23-year old veterinary assistant fresh out of college, saved his life? The rules of the death note don't mention having to *stay* dead. And why is Ryuk so willing to help Light?

Summary
Light has learned that from his life.
The world’s just a stage and you’re the actor that has to put on an act that will please the most people.
Just remember your lines.
It never bothered Light, he assumed that was what everyone felt like.

Summary
The chain between them shuddered.
They were bound together by more than cuffs and secrets. They were tethered by ego, intellect, obsession, and something that might—might—have been love, if either of them had ever been taught how to name it without drawing blood.
They were tethered by the tragedy of being the only two people alive who could meet the other on the battlefield of belief and not flinch.
They were gods, both of them. Incompatible, inevitable, insufferable.
And so very lonely.
Or, how they played god and fell like men.

Summary
Light stares at the ceiling and contemplates godhood. Again.
Because that’s what this is, isn’t it?
Not love. Not lust. Not whatever hideous tragicomic comedy of errors last night was.
It’s worship.
And L—L is a demon kneeling at the wrong altar, daring the god of death to smite him. And Light, well—
He is the altar.
The fire.
The knife.
He is the god.
And gods are not merciful, but they are very good at pretending.
Or, the god kissed the heretic, and called it penance.

Summary
He takes L’s hand again.
Presses his lips to the wrist, the palm, the tips of his fingers like he’s cataloging something fragile. Like he’s making a study out of tenderness.
“Do you think you could love me if I wasn’t good?” Light asks.
L looks down at him with eyes like locked doors.
“I think I already do,” he says.
Light bites his lip. It almost bleeds.
He kisses L’s hand again, feverish.
And then, softly:
“I think I want you to catch me.”
L’s hand tightens around his.
“I think I already have.”
Or, no one tells you how intimacy ruins gods.

Summary
Streams of glistening light filtered into the room, spilling golden rivers onto Light's silken skin. L almost worried about touching her, feared that she would taint her sacred temple with her sinner's hands, as though any grazing touch she left with her fingertips would further doom Light's soul to eternal damnation.
Light wasn't a goddess, but L wouldn't think twice about worshipping her.
or, L knows she's going to die soon, she hopes to make her last moments worthwhile.

Summary
“You know,” L said, “Kant believed moral worth depended on acting out of duty rather than inclination.”
Light snorted. “That’s rich coming from the man who just sucked me off for science.”
L gave him a withering look. “And you, Light-kun, with your utopian fantasies of a perfect world built on sacrifice and control—you think that’s moral? You’re just dressing inclination up as destiny.”
“I am destiny,” Light whispered.
“No,” L said. “You’re just afraid.”
Light’s whole body went still.
L leaned in, slow, deliberate. Until their foreheads touched.
“You’re afraid,” he repeated. “That you’re not as divine as you pretend. That you’re not worthy of the crown you keep making out of corpses. That if someone loved you—truly loved you—they’d see the monster underneath and still say no.”
Light exhaled like it hurt. “And what about you?”
“I’m afraid I’ll see the monster and say yes.”
Or, a chess game is only romantic if no one wins.

Summary
L tangles their fingers together, slow and deliberate, like he’s testing a hypothesis about intimacy.
“I think,” he murmurs, “you’re afraid of being known.”
Light closes his eyes.
“I think you’re obsessed with the idea that someone might look at you and not flinch.”
L’s breath brushes his cheek.
“And you hate me because I did. And I stayed.”
Light opens his eyes. “That’s not true.”
“It is.”
“No. I hate you because you see everything—everything I am, everything I could be—and you still want me. That’s what makes you sick.”
L doesn’t flinch.
“Maybe,” he says, “I’m just the only one honest enough to admit what wanting you really means.”
Or, they were always going to ruin each other beautifully.

Summary
“You want to be good,” L says, voice low. “But only if it means being right.”
Light says nothing.
“You want to be loved,” L continues, “but only if it means being obeyed.”
Light grips the sink so tightly his knuckles go white.
“You want to be God,” L murmurs, stepping closer, “but only if no one knows you’re terrified of dying.”
Light turns.
His voice is cracked glass. “You don’t know me.”
L places a hand over Light’s chest. Right over his heart. Right over the evidence.
“I do,” he says.
Or, they both mistook hatred for something else entirely—and that was the problem.

Summary
“Do you regret it?” Light whispers.
L doesn’t answer immediately.
Then: “No.”
“Even if I’m Kira?”
“I think,” L says, voice steady, “that loving someone doesn’t mean forgiving them. It means knowing what they are, and staying anyway.”
“That’s dangerous.”
“That’s why it’s love.”
Light swallows. His mouth is dry.
“You’re insane.”
“Yes.”
“I think I’m starting to fall in love with you.”
L turns to face him.
“I think,” he says, “that’s why I’m afraid.”
Or, what happens when gods fall in love with their own executioners.

Summary
“You think I’m Kira,” Light says, voice tight.
“I know you’re Kira,” L replies calmly. “I just haven’t proven it yet.”
“So why haven’t you turned me in?”
L’s voice is barely above a whisper. “Because that would mean losing you.”
Light freezes.
“...That’s not how this works,” he says, too quickly. “We’re not—this isn’t a relationship.”
“No,” L agrees. “It’s an investigation. Into intimacy. Complicity. Divinity. Madness.”
“You’re quoting Kierkegaard at me.”
“You’re quoting your bedroom eyes at me.”
