After the Mindflayer and Vecna are finally defeated, Will and his friends drift from each other after they've graduated and he watches helplessly as they go their separate ways. Determined to try and move on, to try and find happiness again instead of clutching to his old life, he meets someone new; Carlton. He teaches Will how to open up again, how to trust again, and how to be honest about his feelings. But things will never feel right with Carlton. He doesn't know everything Will has been through and he could never tell him. How is he supposed to live his life happily with someone who will never truly understand?
His feelings lead him home for Christmas during Winter Holidays away from New York, where he, Jonathan, and Carlton visit as everyone finally is home again for the holidays. Things start to change within Will though, when they go to the Wheeler's for New Years, and he realizes he still has a lot of things left unfinished with Mike. Can he be brave and address them finally, now that he's "moved on"?

Lance’s hands trembled. His jaw clenched. His breath hitched — and then the dam broke.
"You think you know me?!" he yelled, voice cracking. "You don’t get it, Keith. You don’t get what it’s like to wake up every day and feel like you’re stuck in a life that doesn’t belong to you anymore."
Keith stepped forward, but Lance stepped back.
"You get to keep going, being the hero, saving the universe like it’s what you were born to do. And me? I’m just—" He laughed bitterly. "I’m just the guy who stayed behind. Who lost her. Who watched her die and couldn’t do a damn thing."
Keith opened his mouth, but Lance kept going, voice hoarse now.
"Sometimes I wish it had been you instead of her," he said, barely above a whisper. "At least then— then maybe I wouldn’t have to look at you and be reminded of everything I’m not."
