Summary
Qifrey remembers every time he’s erased Olruggio’s memory.
He remembers the first time Olruggio learned about the Silverwood. The second. The fifth. The twentieth. He remembers every promise, every argument, every desperate attempt to stop him. And every time Olruggio chose him anyway.
Olruggio, meanwhile, remembers nothing.
Except…that’s not entirely true. There are gaps that feel too deliberate. Sketches he doesn’t remember drawing. Notes written in his own hand that don’t make sense anymore. And a quiet, persistent certainty that no matter what he’s forgotten, he’s made this choice before.
As the Silverwood begins to stir again, Qifrey resolves that this will be the last time. He won’t let Olruggio sacrifice himself again.
Unfortunately, Olruggio has never been very good at letting Qifrey decide things alone.

Most people didn't manifest the mark of their soulmate right away. Oh, sure, it happened – it had happened with Lucifer, before anyone had known what a soulmate even was, before anyone had realised such a thing was possible for angels – but it was pretty uncommon.
And it was absolutely possible for it to break – or fade. It was pretty unlikely on Earth, hardly ever happened during the span of a regular human life – but when the souls in question were immortal? Yeah, sometimes things changed. Relationships grew distant, love degraded. Olruggio wakes from what he presumes to be another unplanned mid-contraption-construction nap to find the unexpected: Qifrey, crying in his atelier, when Olruggio's reasonably sure the witch wasn't there before he fell asleep. It isn't so much a choice as a need, to comfort his friend despite not knowing the reasons for his distress. And it doesn't matter that Qifrey won't tell him. He will, eventually. Surely.
