It occurs to Ren then, after he caught Dan Heng researching Vidyadhara biology on the Data Bank, plus some memories that resurfaced involving Dan Feng acting the same way in the past, that it could be only one answer that he overlooked. It seemed Dan Heng was experiencing or about to experience a heat, and in his desire to not bother Ren about it, he became overly affectionate and scented Ren in order to help him cope with it. Prior to reconciling with him, Dan Heng has not acted like this before, so Ren can only assume that after their reconciliation, these feelings returned as his mind and body now knew he had a “mate.”
Ren discovers Dan Heng is in heat and helps him through it.

It hugs her waist and goes to mid-thigh and twirls around her body when she makes a sharp turn, skating her knee caps and frilly around her puffed sleeves.
March had buried her face in Caelus’s jacket, gripped Dan Heng’s clothing in her other hand as she’d squeezed and squeezed, like she couldn’t let go, wasn’t willing to try.
Dan Heng watches. Eyes tracking every movement. Keenly aware of every leaf falling and also of the flash of pink tongue as Caelus licks her tongue, sucks it into his own mouth and bites and bites and bites down on her lips.
They’re together. They’re whole. And while relief floods their bodies, they're still desperate to make up for lost time.

We may have the other Chrysos Heirs on our side, assuming we can gather those who are presently alive, but with my existence in Amphoreus’ narrative being questionable at best, our only in is this cycle’s Cyrene.
Stelle looks at me, question dancing on the tip of her tongue. “Shall we go speak with her?”
I nod, already standing up. “We need to figure out what’s next.”
