Dreammates shared dreams when they happened to both be asleep at the same time, of course. The elders said the tides of dreams were dangerous to sink into alone for some, and so the spirits gave them dreammates to keep their souls safe when sleeping. Like ottercats holding onto one another as they floated at sea.
Not everyone had such gifts, and most people only had one or two people to share dreams with. In their village, it was customary that if two children were dreammates that their parents put them down for naps together like family. After all, if the tides of dreams were dangerous, why let anyone go alone who didn’t have to?

Except, Sampo had never shared his dreams with anyone. All he had were the creations of his own unfortunate mind, and an Aeon-fuelled will to never sleep at all in order to escape it.
In comparison, Gepard had spent her entire life being told to forget about the fantastical nature of the dreams she saw. There was a certain image that came with being Gepard Landau, you see, and anything that fell out of place had to be quickly swept under the rug. She knew this intimately. She knew it meant she had to be nothing but the Noble, upstanding citizen she was born.
(And maybe, just maybe, if Gepard tried hard enough, she could convince herself that she didn't want anything else: like a soulmate she could touch, or being a man.)
