Meryl's first job out of college was meant to be pretty straightforward. A few months of investigative journalism and time in the wastes No Man's Land were a surefire way to help her climb the communications ladder and claim a seat at a news desk. An article on the Humanoid Typhoon was the fastest way to her dream. What she didn't account for was having to run with a Stampede that shared a heart very similar to hers.

Why was he defending someone he didn't even know? Why did he give a shit what someone on the internet said to a stranger? He still isn't sure. But the ensuing fight lasted about two hours, going from the ( now deleted tweet ) to the DM’s. After throwing his phone across the room and taking a hot shower, and a few shots. He went back online to look up the streamer he was so adamantly defending a few hours ago. He couldn't remember what the name of the streamer was, and looking up “ Blonde streamer screaming “ isn't really a great game plan to find a SFW game streamer. He laid in bed for a while, scrolling twitter hoping to see someone else post the man so he could get a lead. But no dice.
He threw the phone once more and covered his eyes with his arm. Why did he care so much about this random man, what compelled him to defend a stranger? And not just any stranger, but one with presumably thousands of followers? He wasn't sure. He laid there for a while longer, mind lost in thought. You know where he would find the answers? In the bottle of whiskey he had opened and hadn't finished. Maybe he would look up blondes screaming after all.

Lina cries when Vash goes, though she makes a valiant effort to hold back tears. She tucks little gifts and jars of preserve in his bag—you hover awkwardly some feet away, not quite sure how to deal with children her age, settling for a half-hearted pat on her shoulder before you turn and go.
"They seemed really good to you," you remark as the big house begins to recede on the horizon, a square brown speck on endless blue. The two wave from the porch, watching you go, Vash waving back in broad, goofy arcs before you turn the corner onto main street.
"Yeah," he says, smiling at you once he puts the arm down. It's gentle and placid, his lips closed in an easy curve, his eyes crinkled. You've seen it before, you think. When he bid you goodbye before July, almost three years ago. "They were."
It's late winter when you find Vash the Stampede again.
