Summary
Because Vash is a nice boy, and doesn't fly off the handle and mutilate his brother on the belief that imperfect things are less loved and he will therefore be allowed to keep them. Knives may not spend a lot of time sniveling, but he is never going to stop feeling bad about all the scars he has put on Vash. Hell, he would be locked up somewhere right now, if not for Vash's begging not to be parted from him and Rem's assurances that she could keep them both safe. And she has, and because of that and because this is what Vash wants, Knives is going to Summer Camp For The Criminally Insane And Their Stupid Siblings. Great.
And of course Vash blubbers when they say goodbye to Rem, and then he's way too excited to talk to everyone else on the bus, and it's hot out and there's no AC and Knives is already greasy with sunscreen and just kill him now, honestly.
With my usual impulse to take Big Serious Angsty properties and turn all the characters into the obnoxious teenagers they act like, we find ourselves here, with the cast of Trigun at a summer residential program for kids with severe trauma.

And when his future comes knocking, he will find out truths about himself, his relationship with his late lover and his family. Every plant on No Man's Land has their eyes on "Eriks" and the life that has begun to grow inside of him. And with his love of plants, Vash can do nothing but encourage Nai's growth and power. Vash could never imagen that anyone like Nai has happened before and has no reason to fear for him...

Charcoal eyes were alight in a way that Vash hadn’t noticed before from so far away. Relaxed. Brightened by interest. Filled with an infectious confidence. Enough to spread to Vash. He moved with Wolfwood, finally finding the rhythm with something to focus on. And Wolfwood’s focus was on him, too. It was almost too much to bear, being the subject of that attention Wolfwood shared only with his dance partner.
And Vash was lost in it, the humid air, the upbeat music, and especially Wolfwood, leading him into a dirty dance that had Vash feeling things he never thought he’d experience in his white picket fence life.

The world ended three months ago, but Luida has found less and less time to care about that now that Rem Saverem, last person to touch the navigational console of the SEEDS fleet, has shown up looking for her children. Luida would never forgive herself if the endless array of questions Rem inspires disappear off into the dunes with her, so when Rem decides she's not waiting around for her kids to join her, Luida volunteers to go along.
It's not the worst decision she's ever made, but it's among the top ten. It might move up a couple slots when Rem laughs at a bad joke and her snort strikes Luida like a runaway train.
She can be good with kids. She hopes.
