Work Text:

Kakyoin began to set up his easel in the center of the room. Jotaro looked up from his notebook at the sudden commotion in their room. He cocked an eyebrow, watching Kakyoin collect his supplies. He set his canvas on the easel, only now looking to see Jotaro watching him. He waved his hand, motioning to the easel. “Look, I’ve got a deadline coming up for this project. This is the most effort I’m willing to put in at the moment.” Jotaro chuckles at how exasperated Kakyoin sounded, lifting his notebook to show he was in a similar situation. “We have the biggest lab practical of the semester tomorrow. If it wasn’t for the scientific names…” He sighed, going back to his notes. Kakyoin shook his head, beginning to paint. “Jotaro, you realize I have no idea what you just said to me, right?” Jotaro simply nodded in reply.

The two fell into silence, the one quickly working on his painting while the other studies the pages of physical features of fish species in his notebook. Silence wasn’t typical for them, but they fell into it pretty naturally. That is, until Kakyoin seemed to get a bit restless. He seemed to have stopped painting completely. It took a couple of minutes for Jotaro to realize, but he was staring at him from behind his easel. He addressed the staring without hesitation. “I thought you had a big project to finish.” Kakyoin quickly tried to hide behind his work, rather unsuccessfully.

“Well, you see,” he turned the easel to show it to the other man, “I’ve already finished.” On the canvas was Jotaro, curled up with his notebook studying. “I didn’t think you’d mind. But the project was a portrait. I thought you may have been more tense if you knew.” Jotaro was tense. Not upset. Just caught off guard by the painting. He buried his head back into his notebook to get another moment of silence. Kakyoin tried to apologize but was interrupted by Jotaro saying something that he couldn’t hear. “What was that?” Jotaro repeated himself, only a little louder. “I said, I know it may be boring, but if you’re finished painting you can come study with me.” It was then that Kakyoin realized Jotaro had made space for him to sit next to him while he studied.

Notes:

I realize that Kak would probably not be doing the arts in their room. But I did projects in my room when I probably shouldn’t have as a BS student. So, whatever man. Also I don’t know art at all. RIP. But I do know that fish biology undergrad life. Basically I’m writing solely off my own experience as a student who procrastinated a lot.
