Night has fallen over Hellsalem’s Lot and yet the city didn’t seem to fall asleep, the city was as lively as it was in the daylight. Many people were out on the streets, just like Steven. He was heading for a flower stand, “A bouquet of Zinnias and Dahlias please.” He gave the woman at the stand 10 Zeros and he refused the change, he was feeling generous today. The vibrant pink bouquet was handed over to him, he buried his nose in the flowers and caught a whiff of their sweet smell them. Steven always spoiled Klaus with gifts, but Klaus always told him not to bring anything. Steven couldn’t help himself though, Klaus is everything to him and he wanted him to know that even if that meant going broke.
“This might be it,” Steven thought while checking his phone for the restaurants address, “this might be the first perfect date night in months.” Their date night almost never went as planned, it was always ruined by something; if it wasn’t Femt’s antics it was Zapp’s and so on. The city never seemed to take a break. It has been months since they properly went out together. They both spend a lot of time together at the office but rarely in private, when you protect the lives of everyone else it gets hard to have one of your own. Steven was afraid that all the failed date nights was a sign from the universe, he was afraid the universe was telling them that they don’t belong together. This terrified him. He expressed his concerns to Klaus numerous times but he always responded with: “I would defy the universe for you.” Klaus was a man who would do anything he sets his mind to, he was committed and strong. Steven admired that about him, but he was also afraid that that might become his downfall.
After walking a few blocks he finally arrived at the restaurant. K.K. Recommended it to him, it was her and her husband’s favorite place to eat. Despite the usual bickering between him and K.K., he respected her. He respected her and looked up to her, the way she juggled her personal life and her job at Libra. It was almost as if she was a robot, or if she had a secret twin. Steven wishes he was like her in that area and that area alone.
Klaus was standing at the door. Steven expected him to be inside already, so naturally he started to worry. “It’s closed due to health and safety violations, there’s no telling if it ever opens again.” Great, not only was the restaurant closed, K.K. Also tried to kill them. Steven was ready to blow the night off, like all the other date nights in the past 2 months, but Klaus suggested something: “We don’t have to be in a fancy restaurant to have a nice evening, what if we just walk the in park?” It took Steven a while to register what his boyfriend had suggested him, he was still getting over the fact that his carefully planned evening was ruined. Maybe he should’ve checked the restaurant’s site before taking K.K.’s word, she will not hear the end of this though. Klaus took Stevens hand and gestured ‘a let’s go’. “But my plans?” Steven sounded distressed, because he was in fact distressed. Steven was bad at loosing it up, he was even worse at diverging from his plans. He always believed that those things could get him killed, even in his personal life. “Just let go once in a while. As long as I’m with you I don’t care what we are doing.” Those words, they reassured Steven and filled him with a fuzzy feeling. Those words would terrify him usually, but it came from Klaus and he trusted Klaus with his life. Steven loved his boyfriend more than anything, maybe it really didn’t matter what they did. Steven stared in Klaus’ deep green eyes, they were like a bright summer field, took a deep breath and leaned in and they kissed him. “I love you,” Steven whispered after they were done. He didn’t need to hear one back because he knew, he knew Klaus felt the same. “I would also defy the universe for you.” He quietly whispered, Klaus couldn’t hear him but he didn’t have to. It was a silent promise Steven made, not only to the love of his life, but also to himself.
No matter what happened, when he was with Klaus every date night was perfect.
