There's a deadline. A stupid deadline, but nowhere in a Magic Knight's oath of duty does it stipulate that they will only face smart enemies. Or strong ones.
Luckily, for Finral, the laws of physics exist to be thwarted and gravity is a mild inconvenience, at best. By contrast, Yami's not so sure about this.
