Work Text:
...Ema ran out of Snackoos a little while ago and now she’s having one hell of a day.
Sliding down in her chair, Ema threw her hands back as she sunk deeper, staring at the corkboard stuck on the wall of her office, groaning. She squints her eyes at the cork board, sticky notes all over it along with thin colourful strings tying each pinned note to one another and written on them were words that were hastily jotted down, referencing various pieces of evidence that meant absolutely no sense to her if not
She abruptly stood up from her chair, grabbing the back of the seat with her right hand and forcefully sliding it across the floor, slamming it into her desk. Ema could honestly care less about the noise she made as she dropped the case files onto her desk and sipped her cup of coffee, still glaring at the notes on her corkboard.
“So, the body itself didn’t show any signs of being dragged on the floor, nor any stray bloodstain from where it was found and the port itself… maybe a stray stain that we missed…” She muttered, her hand resting on her chin as her eyes shifting between them in rapid succession, going over what she’s thought out so far again, and again.
Good god, she was working on this for days now and she felt no closer to the truth of this case. Ema placed her hands on her head as the headache intensified. It felt like she was going to explode at any moment, lashing out at the next person who would dare speak to her, let alone be in her field of vision.
...Until the sound of a tree branch tapping repeatedly against the window snapped her out of it, causing her to turn her head abruptly toward it, staring for just a few moments as though she was hoping for something else to happen.
...She shook her head, turning back to the corkboard and was beginning to look over them again, if not for another round of knocking on her window, this time causing her to whip her head around, spotting a gloved hand pull back behind the wall where she couldn’t see.
...Ema knew that glove anywhere.
“Kay?!” She calls, as she moves to hastily unlock the dusty window and lift it up, sticking her head out of it.
And right outside was Kay Faraday, standing precariously on the side of the building, perched on a ledge. She waved towards where she thought Ema was, only just turning away from the ground to look at the detective, smiling. “Hey, Ema! Do you mind letting me in? It’s kind of… Well, I’m pretty sure I can drop at any moment, so I’d really like not dying right now.”
“Kay, what-- what were you thinking?! I don’t… Hold on…” She turns back around, and making sure no one was looking, she reached out the window, holding out her hand for the thief to grab.
Kay reached out as well, inching closer just a bit to grab on to Ema’s hand for support. Moving closer to the open window, she gripped the windowsill after Ema guided her hand to it and flipped herself over so she can climb inside.
...Which she doesn’t do, instead preferring to squat on the windowsill and balancing herself right there, cheekily staring down at Ema with a grin as the detective silently stared at her, giving her a look that said, “I’m not mad, just very disappointed.”
“...I brought you Snackoos!” Kay pulls out a small ziplock bag filled with the snack that Ema happens to enjoy.
“...If you think this makes up for nearly risking your life trying to bring me snacks, then you’d be very wrong.”
“I mean, they wouldn’t let me in through the front door, so I had to go with something else.” She climbs down from the windowsill, her feet planted on her floor.
“You couldn’t just call me to leave my office?”
“I did! You never pick up my calls when you’re at work, unless I’m really, really lucky. I mean, I could’ve called Mr. Edgeworth, but he’s… kind of busy with Mr. Wright. That’s all I heard, anyway.” Kay was met with Ema silently crossing her arms in response.
“...Fine. But you can’t stay here, either, I’m in the middle of work.” She gestures toward her unkempt desk.
“Sure thing, just, uh…” Kay gingerly placed the bag of food on a nearby stack of papers. “Maybe we can get dinner afterward?”
Ema sighed. “...I’d love to, but I’ll be at this all night, unfortunately.”
“Then I can drop by again later on, with some takeout food, if you want.”
“Please tell me you’ll go through the front entrance? You know, like a normal person?”
“No promises, aside from the food!”
“If that’s so, then all you’re promising me is a new case to investigate.”
“That’s one way to put that I might die.”
“Then it’ll be my job to investigate your demise, of course. Glad we’re confirming that it’ll happen.”
“I’ll be safe! I can just knock on the window again and you can let me in.”
“...Kay.”
“...Fine. I’ll go through the front this time.” She threw her hands in surrender. “Anyway, see you later!”
With that, Kay stole a quick peck on Ema’s cheek before flying right on by, taking a second to spin around shooting finger guns at her before finally exiting her office, humming in delight.
...A small smile crept up Ema’s face as opened up the bag and idly munched on her Snackoos, thinking to herself how puzzled her coworkers will be as they see the thief, someone who they’ve never seen before, pass by them.
