Intertwined

Summary:

Feng Xin didn't realize love could shape the way we see the world, change everyday experiences into beautiful things. Luckily, with Mu Qing by his side every morning now, he's become quite a bit wiser.

Notes:

Veryyy short and sweet fengqing from a few weeks ago! I love their arguing and bickering as much as anyone, but sometimes a little tenderness is nice too, right? Enjoy!

P.S.
I think this fic goes along pretty well with the song Intertwined by Dodie (hence the title) so if you'd like some atmospheric music to go along while you read, check that one out!

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

Warmth. Gentle sunlight, kissing Feng Xin’s brows and the tip of his nose in greeting of yet another day.

Feng Xin couldn’t count how many mornings he’d woken just like this – he was a god, after all. He’d lived for hundreds of years and would have a hundred thousand mornings and days just like the ones before this one.

Well, almost just like this one.

All those past mornings that hadn’t mattered because waking up was just the painful gateway everyone had to get through to begin the rest of the day, god and human alike. Feng Xin hadn’t cared, hadn’t paid any attention at all.

But in the last week, mornings had become something of a favorite time of day for Feng Xin.

He felt the reason why this had happened shift under satin sheets covering them both and groan oh-so reluctantly.

“What time is it?” came a thin voice, thick and soft from a night of disuse.

Feng Xin felt a smile forming, despite himself. “Time for the sun to come up,” he murmured.

The voice scoffed, but it lacked its usual sardonic gleam. “Don’t purposefully irritate me so early in the morning, Feng Xin.”

“Sorry,” Feng Xin replied, without meaning it at all. He reached out, still half covered in blankets, tracing the line of that person’s body from waist to the top of his silvery head – his hand came to rest there, gently caressing strands of impossibly soft hair.

After a tender moment, the silver hair shuddered and two slender arms flung out, pulling Feng Xin flush against a wonderfully familiar body in a skintight, breathless embrace.

“Oh? Feeling clingy today, are we?” Feng Xin managed, fighting the urge to go red from head to toe.

When he didn’t get a response, he looked down, tucking his chin against his chest, only to meet two wide eyes as dark as the night sky already watching him, framed by petal pink cheeks and thin lips parted in a delightful inability to retort like they normally did.

“Hm? Caught you off guard for once, did I?” Feng Xin asked again, and this time he really couldn’t stop his grin.

Mu Qing’s brows pinched together and his lips pursed too – with his whole face held so small and insistent, Feng Xin just had kiss him.

So many mornings spent alone, and so many more to be spent just like this.
