“Do you want to go out on a date?”
This question ran through Jotaro’s mind while sitting across from one of his best friends, Noriaki kakyoin. Jotaro didn’t really know what they were honestly. He knew Kakyoin would do certain things that would make him have confused signals sometimes. Kakyoin would do little things like lightly nudging him in the chest when he told a bad joke, picking lint off of Jotaro’s school jacket at random times without him knowing, and even smiling a lot at him whenever Jotaro talked about, Well, anything that he enjoyed.
-
“Hey Jotaro, are you alright?”
“Huh?”
“You didn’t hear a thing I said huh?”
“.... no.”
Kakyoin shook his head. Sighing, he crossed his arms. “I said, I’d like to go to the art museum at some point before summer break sends. I know I’ve had time during this whole break, but I got so caught up in doing other things like playing video games late at night to early mornings, and helping mom at home. I’ve just haven’t gotten the time to do it.”
“...”
Kakyoin chuckled, “Forget it. I know you aren’t a huge fan of art. I can ask my mom if she’d like to go with me.”
Jotaro sat there anxiously, slightly sweating. This can be his chance finally to ask his friend out on a date. Unless he manages to fuck it up.
“I’ll take you.”
“W-What?”
“I said, ''I'll take you.”
“Jotaro.. you don’t have to. It’s alright.”
“On a date-“ Jotaro quickly covered his mouth. He didn’t mean to blurt that out suddenly. He didn’t even think first.
Kakyoin sat there staring at him, his cheeks were red like his hair. The two of them sat there awkwardly as silence began to fill the air. Both of them didn’t know what to say. Tilting the brim of his hat over his eyes, Jotaro swallowed thickly.
“I-I mean.. I’ll take you. I mean-“
“Yes.”
“Huh?”
“Yes. I’ll go out on a date with you.” Kakyoin smiled, his cheeks rosy as his hair still.
Jotaro’s face quickly heated up, his face turning a dark shade of red. He tilted the brim of his hat further down, blocking out his face out of view except for his lips.
“L-lets go then. Before the museum closes.”
“But wait, Jotaro-“
Jotaro stood up, grabbed ahold of Kakyoin’s wrist, helped him stand up, and pulled him out the door.
-
The weather was somewhat cloudy downtown by the time the two of them arrived at the museum. But before they arrived, Jotaro and Kakyoin both had to deal with constant traffic. People yelling at one another, shouting out of their windows yelling at people to hurry it up for walking so damn slow. By the time they arrived, Jotaro tried opening the door to let Kakyoin go in first, only to be introduced to the door not budging.
Kakyoin coughed quietly, tugging gently on Jotaro’s school jacket. “Um Jotaro, they’re closed.” He pointed over towards a sign on the nearby door.
Closed. Open 10 am - 5 pm weekends. 10 am - 7 pm weekdays.
Jotaro tilted the brim of his hat over his eyes in embarrassment.
“It’s alright Jotaro. It’s my fault for not bringing it up sooner, saying that they’ll be closed on the weekends. I.. didn’t want to ruin the mood.” Kakyoin rubbed his arm in embarrassment, his cheeks flushed a bit. “I was really happy that you finally asked me out on a date. But I should’ve let you know this beforehand.”
Without saying a word, Jotaro grabbed ahold of Kakyoin’s hand, clumsily intertwining his fingers with his. His palm was slightly sweaty in nervousness, his heart pounded in his chest.
Here he was, holding his best friend’s hand, but more in a romantic way? Jotaro didn’t really know. He was nervous as hell.
“I know a pretty nice diner down the block. We can go there if you’d like.” Kakyoin smiled, giving Jotaro’s hand a light squeeze.
Jotaro tilted his hat down once more, trying to block out his crimson red cheeks from Kakyoin’s view.
“Y-yeah. I’d like that.”
-
Walking side by side one another wasn’t that bad to Jotaro. Except he was still feeling nervous as hell, trying not to walk either too fast or too slow so Kakyoin can walk at the same pace and right next to him. He could feel Kakyoin’s grip on his hand tighten, their fingertips pressing closer together, intertwining with one another still. They arrived at the diner a couple minutes later. Jotaro was surprised Kakyoin held his hand for this long until he removed it to open the door, allowing him to go in first. He felt a bit disappointed that he let go.
Upon entering, the diner wasn’t too big nor too small. There was the classic over the counter bar with round seated stools, and a bunch of small booths. Jotaro sat down at a nearby booth towards the back but somewhat placed in the middle of the restaurant. Kakyoin followed behind by sitting across from him, happily smiling as he grabbed a nearby menu.
“So, What do you want? It’s on me.”
Jotaro grabbed a menu. “You’re paying? I was the one that asked you out.”
“Yeah so? I’m the one that offered to come here and you said yes. So I’m paying.”
“Tch. Fine.”
Looking over the menu, there was quite a lot of things Jotaro could order. Classic hamburgers, hot dogs, chili, the basics. He wasn’t too hungry until he saw that they had ice cream. Jotaro didn’t mind different ice cream flavors, but he always went went the classic. Vanilla. A few minutes passed and a waitress walked over, and took their orders. Jotaro ordered the classic vanilla ice cream. Plain. Nothing on it. While ordering, he saw at the corner of his eye that Kakyoin was rolling his eyes and smirking. When it came to Kakyoin’s turn, he ordered cherry ice cream. With extra cherries on top of course. The waitress happily took their menus and walked away, leaving the two teens in silence while music played softly over the speakers.
“You always get vanilla Y’know?” Kakyoin rested his chin on one hand, the other resting on the table along with his elbow.
“Yeah so? I like vanilla.”
“It’s basic. And don’t give me that crap about how you like “transparent” as a color. That’s not even a color.”
“What does me liking transparent things have to do with ice cream?” Jotaro crossed his arms.
“Hmpf. Nothing.” Kakyoin scoffed.
“C’mon, you can tell me.”
Kakyoin smiled a bit, trying to keep back a laugh. “It’s so… you.”
“Whaddya mean by that Nori?”
Kakyoin giggled. “You know what I mean.”
Jotaro could feel his cheeks warm up. Raising his hand to rest it on his cheek, his fingertips brushed up against his warm skin. Without a warning, Kakyoin reached over the table, lightly grabbed ahold of his hand. Smiling, he rested them on top of the table, caressing the top of Jotaro’s hand with his thumb. Jotaro could tell that his face was probably on fire at the point.
“Nori-“
The waitress walked over with their ice cream, placing them down on the table in front of them, interrupting Jotaro half way. Kakyoin let go of his hand once more to pick up a spoon. Placing both hands in his lap, Jotaro thanked the waitress quietly before picking up his own spoon. The waitress smiled and left the bill on the table.
“Hey Jotaro, did you know I can tie cherry stems in a knot in my mouth by using my tongue?” Kakyoin happily placed a cherry in his mouth. A couple seconds later, he stuck out a single cherry stem with a knot in it. “Got like 3 more to go.” He smiled happily again, placing the cherries in his mouth once more.
“Don’t know if that counts as talent or it’s just plain normal to any other human being.” Jotaro mumbled while putting a spoonful of ice cream into his mouth.
“Says the man that gets nothing on his boring, plain ass ice cream.” Kakyoin teased.
Jotaro stuck his tongue out in response, shoving more ice cream into his mouth.
-
Light rain fell as the two teens walked back home. The rain wasn’t too bad until it started to kick up a notch, suddenly pouring down faster and harder. Luckily, Kakyoin found a big enough tree in a nearby park for them to take shelter under.
“Maybe we should take the bus home so we don’t have to walk anymore in this damn weather.” He shivered a bit.
“You cold?” Jotaro asked while removing his hat, wringing it in his fingers, removing any water that was able to soak up into it.
“Nah, I should be fine. I don’t know why I didn’t wear a jacket today like I always do.” Kakyoin slightly shivered once more. “Also, has your hair always been that curly and wavy?”
Jotaro moved his hand through his slightly wet hair. It’s true that his hair is somewhat wavy, but it also being curly? He did have the single strand of curly hair hang down underneath his hat. Guess he never thought more about it before.
“Uh, yeah I guess.”
Placing his hat back on his head, at the corner of his eye, Jotaro saw Kakyoin’s hand and finger brush quickly against his curl, leaving it slightly bouncing.
“Oh!” Kakyoin quietly gasped, covering his mouth with his hands, keeping back a giggle. “Sorry, I just had to do it.” He squeaked and shivered once more.
“....here.” Jotaro took off his school jacket, handing it to Kakyoin while blushing. “You’re clearly cold.”
Kakyoin didn’t seem to argue as he put on the jacket. It was a tad bit big on him even though him and Jotaro were inches apart from each other when it comes to height. It was a bit damp, but warm.
“Thank you.” Kakyoin adjusted the sleeves.
“You’re wearing that until I see you tomorrow.”
“Huh? Tomorrow? Why tomorrow?” Kakyoin tilted his head. “Why not tonight when I get back to my place before you go home?”
“You ask a lot of questions Y’know.” Jotaro mumbled.
“Okay damn, I was just wondering that’s all.” Kakyoin adjusted the sleeves again. “It is quite comfortable and warm. And it does smell like you, so maybe I’ll keep it for a while.”
“Wait, what-“ Jotaro’s eyes widened.
“Oh finally the weather is clearing up. Let’s get home before it starts to pour unexpectedly again.” Kakyoin grabbed Jotaro’s hand once more, intertwining his fingers with his. Jotaro blushed again but stayed silent.
-
“I just wanted to say thank you for tonight. It was really nice.” Kakyoin smiled as Jotaro walked him down the sidewalk, approaching Kakyoin’s house.
“Yeah me too.” Jotaro stuffed his hands into his pockets, smiling a bit.
“Don’t worry you’ll get your jacket back soon. I know how much it means to you like how much your hat means to you too.” Kakyoin smiled once more. “I’ll take extra good care of it. I promise.”
“Tch. You better. If I find one single drop of paint on it I’ll-“
Cutting him off, Kakyoin pressed his lips against Jotaro’s, slowly but sweetly kissing him. Smiling, he wondered his hands down towards Jotaro’s, taking them out of his pockets and intertwining his fingers with his. In surprise, Jotaro kissed him back, tasting the somewhat leftover aftertaste of the cherry ice cream on his lips. Kakyoin smiled once more, letting go of the kiss.
“I promise.” He whispered, slowly caressing the top of Jotaro’s hands with his thumbs.
“Nori, I-“
“You don’t have to tell me. I already know.” Kakyoin smirked, giving him a quick peck on the lips before letting go of his hands. “I love you too.”
Jotaro’s face immediately flushed a deep red at the sound of Kakyoin’s words. His heart beat kicked up a bit but slowed down once Kakyoin took ahold of one of his hands, brought it up to his lips, and kissed it. Smiling, he giggled.
“Been wanting to do that too.”
“I-I don’t mind.”
“Well I hope so.” Kakyoin smiled.
The two of them walked up the steps towards the front door. Kakyoin took out the pair of keys he had in his pocket.
“I hope you take me out again sometime. I really did have a great time.”
“I’ll make sure the museum is open next time we go. Can’t wait to hear you and your artsy fartsy brain tell me all about the paintings and such.” Jotaro teased.
“You bet I will.” Kakyoin laughed, letting out a quick snort.
“Heh.. cute.”
“What was that?”
“Oh, nothing.” Jotaro blushed.
“You’re so you, Y’know that right?” Kakyoin cupped his hands around Jotaro’s cheeks.
“Yeah yeah I know.” Jotaro rolled his eyes.
Kakyoin kissed him once more. Smiling, he let go, tapping the bottom of the brim of Jotaro’s hat up with his finger.
“Next time, I’m taking this when I return your jacket. Just to bug ya.”
“I guess you can.”
“Oh you know I will.” Kakyoin laughed. “Goodnight Jotaro.”
“Goodnight Noriaki.”
Kakyoin turned to unlock the door. Opening it, he looked over his shoulder to see Jotaro still standing there in the same spot. Rolling his eyes, he kissed him once more before entering the house, closing the door behind him.
Jotaro stood there for a moment, taking in what happened tonight. He stuffed his hands into his pockets once more as he walked down the stairs and onto the sidewalk. Licking his lips and smiling, he can’t get over the taste of Kakyoin’s cherry ice cream smile.
