Work Text:
Nedzu is officially having the worst day of his life. Aizawa submitted paperwork to expel his entire class, Powerloader spilled coffee on him, and finally, his old friend Hatsume Yasui asked if she could recommend her daughter for the support course in a few years. If her daughter is anything like Yasui, he fears for the survival of the school.
At least nobody can bother him when he gets home.
It takes about half an hour to get from Yuuei to the place Nedzu calls home, one of the many underground complexes that make up half the reason nobody is allowed to dig further than a hundred feet below the ground in Mufasa.
Throughout his entire life, nobody has ever been able to discover the location of the entrance, making it the perfect place to escape to after a long day.
He turns his phone on silent and sits down with a notebook in front of the television to watch the latest episode of Unsolved Mysteries, this week’s episode was on the semi-recent Coruscant murders, and he is determined to solve it.
Then comes a knock at the door.
There shouldn’t be a knock at the door.
Why is there a knock at the door?
He pulls up the camera feed for the main entrance and sees a young green haired boy carrying a pile of notebooks, what the fuck. Seeing that there doesn’t appear to be any immediate danger, he walks over opens the door.
“Oh thank god, I’ve been trying to find you for the past 3 days, I’m so glad this isn’t just a random tree!” How has this kid done what millions of pros and villains alike have been struggling to do for years. In. Three. Days.
“Child, why exactly were you looking for me,” He hopes it's not for any villainous reasons, he’d hate to kill this kid.
“Oh I want to be a hero, and I figured that...” Nedzu’s eye twitches at the word hero, a reminder of the horrible day he just had.
“Try the entrance exam.” Nedzu shuts the door on the kid and instantly feels bad, but if he helps every hero hopeful who asks him, he’d never get any time for himself. Even if this one found out where he lived, he was probably just getting careless about safety and the kid was probably just lucky.
Anyways, he was recently thinking about moving to his newest bunker and this incident is the perfect excuse.
A week later, Nedzu finds himself rewatching the Coruscant murder episode in his new house, unable to believe that he hasn’t solved it yet.
Then there is a knock at the door
Nedzu freezes, There’s no way. He pulls up the camera feed and there stands that same kid, with that same pile of notebooks.
There are two options, he can either flee and pray that the kid wouldn't find him again, or he can open the door and get some answers. And being the curious little rat he was he chooses the later.
“Kid do you have some sort of tracking quirk?” That’s the only plausible explanation, right?
“No, I’m quirkless, actually that’s part of the reason I’m asking you to train me” Nezdu must have misheard that, there’s no possible way this child has successfully done what hundreds of people have attempted to do for years, in a week.
“You can’t possibly be quirkless, I’d appreciate it if you didn’t lie to me”
“I have my X-rays in one of these notebooks, and while I don't have my blood tests with me right now I could probably get them within the hour.”
Nedzu holds out his paw in glister saying "pass it over" and sure enough according to the x-rays the kid is quirkless, “Alright then, come in, I have a few questions for you,” he leads the child into the living room, in mild shock.
The child sees the tv screen and lights up, “Is that about the Coruscant Murders? I’m pretty sure it’s Kirā Satsujin, although she’s reported as an attempted victim, some of the details about her attack just don’t line up”
Nedzu might be beginning to like this kid. He’s never met anyone else who shared his fondness for solving unsolved murders, that aren't paid for it. “Really, I was thinking it was Mujaki Chīsai, he fits the description given by most of the witnesses, he has a motive, and his quirk is heat related which matches the burns on victims.”
“But Satsujin can control water, and is shown to be able to manipulate the temperature of it, with how she can turn it into ice crystals, and since the burns are caused by some sort of contact with a heated surface there’s no reason why she couldn’t heat up a piece of metal and burn them with it.
"Plus she went to the same high school as Chīsai, and in all her interactions she was shown to be skittish of him, which was interpreted as fear, but videos show her blushing so I theorize that she had a crush on him in high school, but when he eventually started dating Urayamashī, Satsujin got jealous and killed her."
The kid started to pace. “But she got caught by Korosareta when attempting to dump the body. So after killing two people she realized that her best chances of getting away with the murders were to kill another at random to avoid people piecing together the connection. Then she burnt herself and made up a story about somebody attacking her from behind, because people seldom accuse the victims”
Nedzu is surprised, to say the least, the theory is solid enough that he can’t believe he hadn’t thought of it before “Have you gone to the police with this yet”
“Nobody wants to listen to a quirkless ten-year-old” his face fell at that, obviously remembering how Nedzu treated him a week ago, which he is really regretting now.
“Hey, kid! You mentioned that you wanted training earlier, If this theory turns out to be correct, I will personally take you under my paw and train you to be a hero.” If this kid is as smart as Nedzu believed he was, he is too valuable a resource to let go to waste.
A month later Kirā Satsujin is in jail with a life sentence for murder. Izuku’s theory was almost entirely correct, with only the fact that Korosareta walked in on Satsujin killing Urayamashī rather than just dumping her body.
And as such Nedzu was is in the living room of the Midoriya household, going over one of the many quirk notebooks the green haired kid wrote. The quality is almost professional despite it having been created 3 years ago, and with every word he reads he grows more and more convinced that he's making the right decision about training Izuku.
