Work Text:

The night had settled unto the world, a dark sky painted with the light of stars and the moon, illuminating a boy, still not yet a man, who stood upon a balcony. The hall had been emptied of those who had revelled in the night festivities, the lights still warm and bright inside but so empty and lacking in couples to fill the room with laughter and love.

Jonathan leant against the balcony ledge, breathing in the cold air with a shaky breath. It wasn't the coldest night of the season but it was cold enough to leave him on the verge of shivering, the fabric of his clothes layered up just enough to keep him block out the nipping breeze that flew past.

He hadn't danced with anyone that night, he hadn't wanted to, not when the person he wanted to dance with wasn't a choice. Who knows what rumours would spread and what people would say. But that hadn't stopped him from staring. That hadn't stopped him from watching Dio from across the hall and following him with his blue gaze as he put on that air of politeness and danced with the girls who had approached him with a smile. Jonathan got away with it, muttering with a red face that he wasn't good at dancing and that he didn't want to step on any toes and had engaged in conversation instead. Dio though did both. He danced and talked and impressed everyone, as he always did, and JoJo had fallen in love all over again.

Every time he saw Dio being so perfectly composed it struck a chord that made him simultaneously jealous and proud. Dio always made him feel that way.

A gentle hand was placed on Jonathan's shoulder.

"Would you let me have this dance?" Dio was standing there, still dressed in his suit with the golden ringed buttons that bought out his eyes and he looked as gorgeous as he had at the beginning of the night. No amount of dancing or interaction had affected his appearance; he didn't even look tired despite the time of night.

Jonathan gave Dio an awkward smile that was half held back as if he didn't want Dio to notice the real extent of his glee at being asked and took his hand, turning around and responding. "Please."

They wasted no time entering the hall again, leaving the balcony and taking to the floor. Jonathan placed one hand on Dio's shoulder and interrwined the other with Dio's, Dio's other hand placed on Jonathan's waist ready to lead.

For the start of the dance they watched their feet, careful not to make mistakes as they danced to the imaginary beat they'd made in their heads. With Jonathan stumbling as he couldn't follow Dio as well as he could have with music, Dio sighed and squeezed his hand looking at him and closing in so they were close enough for their noses to touch.

Dio closed his eyes and JoJo followed suite closing his as well, and suddenly a low humming began. It was just loud enough for the two of them to hear, a sweet melody that JoJo had once heard before.

The years Jonathan had spent trying to hear Dio sing were behind him, a truth he only just realised, as Dio now was willingly singing to him with a voice that rivalled angels. A smile was brought to Jonathan's face as he pulled Dio closed and placed his face in the crook of Dio's neck so his lover's lips were right by his ear, letting him enjoy all of the melody properly.

He wasn't going to speak and ruin the moment and so he let Dio lead and sing to him as they danced through the room, stepping lightly and spinning with each other in their arms, close and intimate as Jonathan liked.

And the night was finally complete.

Take my hand and sing, my love
And show me how to dance.
Tonight, I wish to be only yours.
Tonight is a night for romance.

The way we move is special to us;
A way for deep conversation.
Tell me more, dance for longer,
And become my latest fixation.
