Work Text:

Mirai liked humor and smiles in his world. He thoroughly enjoyed music festivals, comedians (those with taste of course), among other things. One of these other things were contests, and other such event. He would never enter himself, of course, other people deserved winnings more than himself, but this didn't stop his boss from doing it for him.

This was the case in one such afternoon......

...

The radio crackled at the edge of Mirai's desk, it was almost time for the station's monthly drawing, and this month was for a hot-air balloon ride. It was advertised as a romantic getaway and he listened intently. It was his favorite part to hear them call the winner and hear the bright smiles in their voice.

"And this week's winner is........Sasaki Mirai! Congratulations Sasaki-san!"

The phone rang a moment later with the secretary's voice patching through.

"Sir, there's a radio station on the other end calling your office extension. Should I put them through?"

"S-sure."

"Here they are--"

"Sasaki-san! Congratulations! This is Present Mic comin at ya live from the studio with this month's drawing. You've won! How do you feel?"

He was going to kill Toshinori.

"Great! Uh, thanks!"

"Tell us more, listener! Who are you going to take with you on this special outing?"

Mirai didn't particularly like being put on the spot. It wasn't that he wasn't a good speaker, he had passed speech well enough and to be in a hero agency at all, you had to have decent rapport with the public.... It's that he wasn't really in the state of elation most of their winners responded with. He would feel fake regardless of how he responded.

"Um... I'll probably take my significant others..."

"Aw that's adorable. You have fun with them now, special listener!"

He heard a click and the background music turned off.

"All right, Sasaki-san, the recording is off! You can come by the studio anytime to pick up these HOT TICKETS! Be sure to drag Shouta along too, mk?"

"Yeah, Mic, I'll do that."

"Bye now!"

...

"That's all for this month, listeners! Thanks for participating and we'll see you next month! ON TO THE JAMS!"

....

Mirai sighed and turned off the radio. He supposed it was close to time for the office to close anyway, so he might as well head over there and pick up the tickets.

[Mirai, Shouta, Toshi]

Mirai, 4:47 PM: [DID EITHER OF YOU ENTER ME IN A DRAWING.]

Toshi, 4:50 PM: [Negative, Sir, did you win something?]

Shouta, 4:51 PM: [:smiling_imp:]

Mirai, 4:52 PM: [Why didn't you TELL ME]

Shouta, 4:58 PM: [Because this is funnier. :D]

The radio station was quiet when he walked in, not at all the loud place he assumed it would be. Mirai approached the front desk, an awkwardly low thing he felt like he towered over.

"H-hello! How can I help you sir?"

The woman behind it stammered out, quite obviously intimidated in his presence. He supposed his look was probably more sour than the typical person striding through their doors to claim a prize.

"Um, I'm Sasaki-san, came to collect the tickets, I guess?"

"Perfect! Before I hand them over, Mic made me promise to ask you for a joke."

Mirai huffed, "That's just like him isn't it," it brought a slight smile to his face anyway, "Hmm... how about this one? What creature is smarter than a talking parrot?"

She smiled at his playing along, "I don't know, what?"

"A spelling bee."

She gave him a short sort of laugh and handed over his tickets.

"That's cute. Enjoy your trip, Sasaki-san!" she called after him as he left.

...

Mirai didn't say a thing when Toshi and Shouta returned home from UA that evening, simply occupied his spot in a chair, and read the newspaper. The tickets lay out on their coffee table, and he greeted them with a cool 'Welcome home.' when they walked in the door.

Neither of his significant others were stupid, they were all quite intelligent adults, and they had known each other long enough to understand he wasn't in the state of delight they meant him to be in.

"Miraiii, I heard you won a contest today!" Toshi asked after he slipped off his shoes at the door.

He looked up over the edge of the paper, "Sure did."

"What did you win?"

"Tickets."

"For?"

"Hot air balloon ride."

"Well, doesn't that sound like fun?"

"I think it would have been more fun if I had entered myself. I didn't even know what to tell them, I was quite surprised."

Shouta unfurled his capture weapon and left it on a hook by the door before he joined them in the living room.

"Sorry I didn't tell you, Mirai, I thought you'd be happier about it as a surprise." The man flopped on their sofa and let his limbs relax. Mirai knew firsthand how tense his body got after a long day of UA teaching, it wasn't kind of him to be salty over Shouta trying to do something nice.

He pushed up his glasses on his nose and folded up the newspaper.

"Thank you, I appreciate your sentiment. I suppose now that we have them we should go. When is this balloon ride anyway? I didn't even look at them."

Toshi picked them up from the table and read over one, front and back.

"Looks like this weekend.... 2:00 PM-4:00 PM, Saturday. I wonder what they mean by Quirk-Assisted Flight?"

"Suppose we will find out. Either of you work this weekend?"

~~~~~
The three of them took their tickets out to the open field they mentioned, and waited. The place was deserted for a moment, then out of seemingly nowhere, a giant balloon with a basket underneath approached. It looked to be rather typical to Mirai, but taking a closer look, he realized that wasn't a typical hot air balloon at all, and was actually being directed by some sort of air current quirk. The balloon itself was sealed shut.
Their host introduced himself and quickly instructed them how the ride was going to go. He had set up the air currents in the route's area to flow in a giant circle, and once they were off the ground he would simply let them ride it out. Mirai had to admit it sounded great, and not having him in the balloon with them would be interesting.
The WHOOOOSH of the wind picking them up gave them all a sort of rush, and they clung to the sides of the basket. Mirai looked out over the side and saw they were floating high enough above the area they could see for quite a ways. Directly beneath them was the small open field they took off from, but they were already drifting out and over a forested area. Because it was September, this meant the trees were in various states of change and multiple colors bloomed over ground below. It was a beautiful sight, and he found himself smiling even as the wind whipped across his face.
"It's beautiful." He whispered and leaned on the outer edging of their basket.
"You sure are." Shouta said, snuggling up to his side and watching the ground below them. His long hair had been pulled back in a half-hazard bun, but the wind was doing its very best to ruin that, and a few long strands blew in his face. If anyone was beautiful it was the two men who loved him, and he made sure they knew it.
"Oh, shush. You know you're the prettiest, don't be silly." Mirai pushed his glasses up his nose and made a point to look in the opposite direction. The pink in his cheeks was from the wind, definitely not from Shouta's smile.
"This is GREAT!" Toshi laughed from the front side of their basket. He took the wind head-on and his long bangs blew out behind him.
"WAHOOOO!"
Mirai had to admit, this balloon was pretty fun, and Toshi's attitude was always contagious. By the end of their ride, they were all three slightly numb in the face, grinning from ear to ear, with the kind of windblown hair a dryer could only dream of creating.
Mirai couldn't wait to do it again.
