“Do a flip!” Hawks called out, watching as Dabi expertly landed his jump, going through a complicated step sequence all while throwing a middle finger in Hawks’ direction. He laughed, walking up to the barrier of the rink and leaning against it, watching Dabi’s skates kick up flakes of ice as he moved.
Dabi’s skating was unparalleled by anyone else. While some of the technical aspects were shaky, there was a certain emotion that he threw into each and every movement that he seemed to express nowhere else. Hawks should be watching his footwork, should be checking for the technicalities, making sure that he was doing everything correctly, but he couldn’t tear his eyes away from Dabi as a whole.
The fluidity and poise throughout his skate was something that Dabi had only on the ice, but somehow still fit right into who he was as a person. His skates were his, they showed his personality perfectly, and they were gorgeous.
The last beats of the music played and Dabi slid into an overdramatic pose, his arms wrapped around his chest and breathing heavily. Hawks whistled through his fingers, leaning up against the barrier. “I meant a backflip, but that triple flip was clean enough for me to let it slide. Are you done for today?”
“Oh, you’re not going to play coach today and tell me how sloppy my feet were?” Dabi skated to the edge of the rink, stopping himself with more flare than necessary, kicking up a shit ton of ice shavings that made Hawks hope that the ice was going to be resurfaced before anyone else went out. He leaned against the side of the barrier opposite of Hawks, running a hand through his eternally messy hair.
“You already know that your free leg looks like an overcooked noodle with half your jumps, and you are making no moves to fix it.” Hawks grinned at Dabi. It was an over-exaggeration, and Dabi’s jumps were improving, but the banter made it easier not to say you look really hot on the ice and I can’t pay attention to your technical moves as often as I should.
Dabi snorted, taking the water bottle from the barrier and taking a long drink. Hawks pointedly did not look at the movement of his neck because that would ruin the whole reason he came here. Dabi knew how hot he was, and it frankly wasn’t fucking fair.
“That’s my style. Hopefully, the judges think I’m hot enough to ignore that. What do you think?” Dabi leaned forward with a smirk and Hawks huffed.
He grabbed Dabi and pulled him in close, meeting their lips together like he knew Dabi wanted. He felt Dabi’s smirk widen against his lips and nipped at his bottom lip but still maintained the kiss for a moment longer. “Aizawa’s bringing in his class soon. You tore up the ice, get off so they can resurface it before the kids end up breaking their bones.”
“You just want me off the ice because that means I’ll be with you,” Dabi smirked, tilting his head to mouth at Hawks’ neck. Hawks shoved at him and Dabi laughed, smoothly moving backwards.
“We are not doing that at the ice rink when Aizawa is about to show up with his class. His class including your little brother.” Hawks narrowed his eyes. “We’ve already been caught too many times by Aizawa.”
“You just think he’s hot and don’t want him to see you sticking your tongue in my mouth,” Dabi taunted, stepping off of the ice. Hawks tossed him his guards and Dabi slid them on. He walked to the locker room, immediately taking off his skates and starting to dry them.
“That’s not true,” Hawks lied. Aizawa was, objectively, hot. In an older man who looked like he should be asleep at all times but also Hawks knew how many medals he had won kind of way. But he didn’t want to be caught by anyone making out with Dabi at the ice rink, hot or not. “And I want you out of here as soon as possible because we’re going on a date.”
“We’re going on a date?” Dabi raised his eyebrows. Hawks breathed out a little that he’d dropped the Aizawa thing. “What kind of date are we going on?”
“I’m taking you to an ice rink.” Hawks smirked at Dabi. “And we are going to hold hands and be the disgustingly PDA couple at the ice rink.”
Dabi started to laugh, the kind of laughter that tugged at the scars on his face. “You want to go to a date at a public ice rink? The recently retired top skater – “
“Second from the top,” Hawks muttered. In his last competition, Todoroki Enji had taken the gold medal and left Hawks standing bitterly at second place. The media had had a field day when he then proceeded to announce his retirement, saying that he was a sore loser. Hawks hadn’t wanted to announce his retirement sooner because he had no good excuse and would be questioned about it the entire rest of the season, but he wished he could just tell them he was bored.
“Enji deserved nothing that he won and you still won more than him, no matter what the fucking stats say.” Dabi glared at Hawks before continuing, “And his protégé, who is also competing at the top level?”
“We never get to skate for fun,” Hawks answered. “No jumps, no tricks. You’re holding my hand and we’re buying grossly overheated hot chocolate and we’re having fun.”
“I get to wear my skates.”
“I’m not going to make you wear the shitty public skates, Dabi. I want to go on a date, not ruin your entire season.” Hawks scoffed. The rental skates would fuck up both of their feet. They had perfectly good skates of their own that they spent way too much money to buy and maintain. They weren’t paying to rent out skates that would make their feet even worse than they were just from skating in general.
“Fine. But we’re going skating, and then I’m bringing you back to my apartment,” Dabi whispered into Hawks’ ear, reaching around to slide his (cold. His hands were always so cold) hands into the back of Hawks’ shirt. “And we’re picking up where you won’t let me here.” Hawks shivered, leaning into his kiss and losing himself for a moment until –
“Todoroki, Takami.” Aizawa monotoned as he walked into the locker room, a few of his students behind him. Hawks jumped away from Dabi, who was smirking like the asshole he was.
“You did that on purpose,” Hawks hissed, shoving at Dabi as his cheeks turned bright red. “Sorry, Aizawa!” Hawks flashed a bright smile at him, kicking at Dabi’s ankle when he felt his hand wrapping around his waist again. “We were just getting ready to leave! Good luck with your lessons!”
Aizawa just watched them tiredly as they left the locker room and Hawks waited until they were outside of the building before shoving Dabi. “You asshole.”
“I thought you didn’t think he was hot?” Dabi smirked, and Hawks should’ve known he hadn’t actually dropped the topic.
“You had your ice-cube hands in my shirt, I would have been embarrassed by anyone walking in on us!” Hawks responded, shoving at Dabi. Dabi slid his arm around Hawks’ waist and Hawks should push him away but he was weak.
“Of course. Nothing at all to do with how hot he is. Now, where the fuck is this ice rink you want to go to?” Dabi asked, slipping a hand into Hawks’ back pocket as they walked.
Hawks huffed out his breath but still leaned into Dabi’s side. “At the park! They set up a tiny temporary rink, I want to check it out.”
“Let’s get this over with,” Dabi said, acting more put out than he actually was, and guiding Hawks toward the park.
Hawks grinned as they walked. The little skating rink was cute, exactly the kind that showed up in bad movies and pictures people posted on social media. Exactly the right kind for a cute date between two top-ranked skaters who just wanted to have some time to themselves.
No one looked at them as they started putting their skates on and Hawks dug into his bag, grinning at Dabi as he pulled out two hats. “To keep us warm. And hide our hair.” He handed it to Dabi, who looked at him like he was going to reject it for a moment before sighing and sliding the hat onto his head, pushing down his messy hair. Hawks threw on his own hat before taking Dabi’s hand, going the few steps to the ice rink.
“No tricks,” Hawks warned as they stepped onto the ice, taking Dabi’s hand immediately. Dabi rolled his eyes.
“I promise not to show off.”
Hawks grinned. A few people looked at them as they skated, but Hawks wasn’t sure if it was recognition or the fact that the two of them hadn’t fallen at all since they got onto the ice, unlike every other unfortunate couple out there. Either way, no one stopped them or tried to get their attention, and that was what he was really looking for here.
Hawks raised his eyebrows when Dabi turned around backwards, but Dabi grabbed onto both of his hands. “This doesn’t count as showing off. Skating backwards isn’t that fucking hard.” Dabi pulled Hawks closer and Hawks nearly stumbled for a moment.
He was good at skating, he’d been doing it his whole life. Sure, he stumbled a little bit, but not usually on something as simple as skating forward. But having someone else on the ice was different, and Hawks laughed.
He fell forward a little, enough for Dabi to get caught off balance trying to catch him. The two went tumbling into the ice and Hawks laughed at the shocked look on Dabi’s face.
“Now we really look like the rest of them.”
“I can’t believe this is what you think is fun,” Dabi said. But there was a smile in his eyes, and he leaned forward to kiss Hawks, shoving him off after a moment to pull his body off of the frozen ice.
“You ready for some hot chocolate?” Hawks asked, kissing Dabi again softly.
“You’re actually ready to get off of the ice?” Dabi smirked. “I was starting to think this was all you knew.”
“I’ve never skated like this before,” Hawks answered. “And I know you’re having fun too.”
Hawks skated to the edge of the ice, stepping off and reaching for Dabi’s hand. Dabi rolled his eyes but took his hand, walking back to their bags and taking off their skates. After making sure they were both properly dried and tucked away, Hawks grabbed their bags and Dabi’s hand.
They ordered two hot chocolates, sitting with their bodies pressed together to maintain warmth. Hawks leaned his head on Dabi’s shoulder, watching everyone at the rink still. Families and couples, enjoying the ice.
It was good.
He finished his hot chocolate and leaned up to kiss Dabi. “Good?”
Dabi hummed. “The warmth is good,” Dabi answered, which was as good as a yes for Hawks.
“The hat looks good on you.” Hawks batted at the bright blue pompom on the top.
“I hate you,” Dabi muttered.
“You do not.” Hawks laughed, kissing Dabi back, sliding in closer to him.
“Now,” Dabi murmured, leaning in to kiss Hawks once again. His mouth tasted like chocolate and for once Hawks was happy for his skin that seemed to soak in whatever temperature it had last felt. His lips were still a tingly warm from the hot chocolate, and they sucked the cold from Hawks. “I think I said we’d skate and then we got to go back to my apartment. Have we skated enough?”
Hawks let out a soft noise as Dabi nipped at his lip and closed his eyes. “I’m ready to go. Thanks for the date.”
“Wait until it’s over to thank me, pretty bird,” Dabi answered, winking at him and offering him a hand to help him up.
Dabi’s hand was colder than the ice they’d just been on, but Hawks still squeezed it, rushing back to Dabi’s apartment.
For the warmth of the building, finally in from the cold of the rink, but also for the warmth of Dabi’s body on his, even as he lost his hat and coat (and much, much more) to the floor of his apartment.
“Thanks for the date,” Hawks whispered a while later, when Dabi’s arms were draped lazily around him and they were both covered by the warmth of his comforter.
“Next time let’s do something other than skating,” Dabi murmured, kissing Hawks, sweeter than he had been recently. “But it was fun.”
