    死亡与性这两种沟通途径，在巴塔耶思想体系中关系密切。他一再提醒我们生物繁殖与死亡紧紧相扣的事实。某些生物在繁衍交媾时丧命只是其中极端的例子。他也一再强调性行为本身与死亡的相似性。 “爱的极致冲动是死亡的冲动。”伴随性高潮而来的失控令人联想到死亡；这种看法与十八世纪法国浪荡主义者（libertin）习惯称呼性高潮为“小死”（la petite mort） 不谋而合。同样地，死亡的念头也在性欢中扮演一定角色。对巴塔耶而言，人类性行为不但巧妙地结合了生（繁殖） 与死（性高潮被视为小死） 这对相生相克的怨偶，情色更是人类存在中许多看似矛盾，实则不断辩证，甚至相依相存现象——生与死、禁忌与逾越、世俗与神圣——的最佳注脚。
