Work Text:
Kunikida had been on a train with his mother to go buy something. What he couldn’t remember. Only that they were supposed to get off at the next stop. They never made it.
The lights flickered and suddenly everything went dark. His mother held him close put him behind her shielding him from what was going on.
Then a man walked into their cart. Everyone was silent and the man walked down the aisle and stopped in front of his mother. He held onto her leg not saying a word. The man put a hand on his mother's face and said “You're a pretty thing, aren’t you. What's that down there is he your son. It would be a shame for me to put a bullet in his head at such a young age”.
He held onto his mother's leg even tighter not even daring to look at the man's face. The man pointed his gun at him and smiled. His mother said “Don’t you touch him and she tackled the man to the ground not before he had aimed his gun and shot a bullet straight at the women's head.
The passenger next to him jumped on top of the man with the gun and a nearby woman grabbed it. Another person had taken their phone out and called the cops. There had only been one casualty and no injuries when an armed man had walked onto a bus intending to kill. Some called it a miracle. It was the opposite for Kunikida though his mother's dead body lay in front of him, unmoving.
His father appeared a few minutes later after hearing the news the man ran up to the scene but he did not run to comfort him instead he ran to his mother. Hugging her dead body tears running down his cheeks eventually he let go and walked over to him and said “let’s boy your life will never be the same. I wish you had been a girl you would have looked like your mother. You look like me boy except for those damn golden eyes they mirror hers exactly. A bystander told me what happened how she had protected you. It’s your fault she died boy” With that they walked away tears still running down Kunikida’s face.
He was the reason his mother had died. He couldn’t comprehend much else as he was at such a young age. All he knew is that his father had told him something and his father was always right. He had killed his mother and he didn’t want anyone to die in front of him again. Kunikida was 6 when his mother died
The funeral was held 4 days later. They placed his mother's body on the ground. His father had cried the whole time. Family members were comforting the man and his tears. Kunikida was left with his grandmother.
The woman looked like his mom but older with the same golden eyes he had. She had been crying due to losing her oldest daughter at such a young age. The old woman held him in her lap and looked at him. She stared at him a while longer and eventually said, “You have your mother’s eyes”
When his father had said it earlier it had sounded more like an insult but when his grandmother had said it the words were kind almost in a sad way. The woman held him closer seeming like she was taking him in and memorizing his features. She would be his support for the next 3 years.
Three years later he found himself at another funeral. His grandmother had died of cancer the illness had been in her body for months. The usually happy and kind woman was drained and on her deathbed, her skin had been so pale it was almost white and her eyes had lost their golden shine appearing as a pale yellow.
Kunikida was at her funeral now and this time his father wasn’t crying he had no emotion in his eyes. He had tears in his eyes, his grandmother was the one who had supported him through his mother’s death was gone. That night when he went home with his father. The man handed him a gift and said it was from his grandmother. His father then walked away leaving him alone in his hour of need.
He carefully unwrapped the package inside lay a beautiful notebook. He picked it up and examined it in the spiral-bound side lay a pen. The pen was smooth to touch and felt good in his hand. He opened the notebook to the first page and wrote the word flower in his best handwriting.
Then he got mad he didn’t want the notebook he just wanted his grandmother so he ripped out the page and threw it to the ground. Next, he lay in bed thinking about his grandmother. After his mother’s death his father had turned violent often punching and kicking the boy and telling him to tell no one, he didn’t.
His father was always right but that didn’t make the punishments any less painful. His grandmother had loved him and always treated him well why had she gone.
Kunikida looked back at the floor where he had thrown the paper but instead of the paper lay a flower. On the ground, he walked over and picked it up the flower holding it in his hands. Did he just turn paper into a flower? Kunikida knew people in the world had abilities but he never thought he would have one was this his?
He wrote the word 100 dollar bill in his notebook then ripped out the page. The page then turned into a 100 dollar bill he stared at it in amazement how had he done that. He went to tell his father but then he stopped on the way, deciding against it. His father may hurt him or force him to use his ability for bad reasons. Kunikida was 9 when he learned he had an ability.
Kunikida learned that his ability only worked on pages smaller than 6 by 3.5. He was 11 now. His father had gotten more controlling and demanding. Only accepting 100 percent on his tests or beatings would be given. Bruises covered his back and chest his father told him to wear long sleeves so he obeyed.
He had found his ability name overtime as well it was Doppo Poet. Doppo Poet became more useful for making pencils and pens to write with. Also for when he left his homework at home. If he had seen something before he was able to replicate it perfectly. The only issue with that was that he was forced to do his homework on very small sheets of paper.
He had now lived for 5 years without his mother. Only vague memories of her remained, the picture on his shelf reminded him of what she looked like. His father talked about her sometimes especially when Kunikida was being beaten telling him how he should have died instead of his mother.
His father would be home soon, he had gotten a 96 on his test meaning a beating was coming. The man arrived a couple minutes later and went straight to where Kunikida was standing and kicked him down on the ground then he proceeded to land blows on the boy’s stomach.
Eventually, the beating ended and Kunikida returned to his room. His mother crossed his mind again he didn’t want anyone to die in front of him again. He opens his notebook and writes “don’t let anyone die in front of me again” Kunikida was 11 when he wrote his first ideal.
Kunikida has written more ideals each from his life experiences some more important than others. Not letting anyone die is still on top though. He is 16 is still trying to please his father. The man still beat him and expected perfect grades.
Kunikida worked hard in school never faltered when it came to studying. His idea was to always work hard and prove to those that mattered that he could meet their expectations. His father tells him not to drink underage he writes it down on his notebook and puts it in his list of ideals.
A week later he is offered alcohol by Katai. Katai probably expected him to refuse but for some reason, he doesn’t. The beer trickles down his throat. He doesn’t like the taste but it does not matter. He has broken an ideal a promise that he was supposed to hold onto and for some reason relief overcame him. Kunikida was 16 when he broke his first ideal.
Kunikida walked down the streets pen and notebook in hand. High school was almost over and he was 17 years old. He would go to college and graduate then move as far away from his father as possible.
The man had continued to be cruel and abusive for all of the years since his mother had died still blaming the boy for her death. The words had once held so much weight but now after hearing them for the thousandth time, they were empty. They were void full of nothing but the tone of hatred which carried them. His father had also gotten lazy sitting on the couch all day barely working at all. They lived in a shabby apartment that was always messy and covered in greasy fried food. Kunikida could make all of the money they needed to have a better life but that would be against the law and would mess up the way the world worked.
College would be expensive but he was top of his class meaning scholarships. A man walked by him carrying a surprisingly large bag he took note of it but walked on. Then Kunikida heard a scream the man had kicked an elderly woman in the face and was searching for money in her purse. Kunikida pulled out his notebook and wrote stun grenade and then yelled “look away” and threw it. The woman was fine but the man who had tried to take her money was incapacitated on the ground.
Another man jumped from the roof of the building. He wore a green yukata and had a sword at his side. He went over to the man on the ground and put handcuffs over him and asked “you did this boy”
Kunikida was too stunned to speak for a little bit but eventually responded with a “yes”
The man in the yukata then picked up the guy on the ground and slung him over his shoulder and said “that's a powerful ability you have their boy. I’m starting an agency to protect the people of Yokohama from harm. I could offer you a spot.”
Kunikida had just been offered a job but he was still in high school and had to finish that so he said “I’m still in high school, sir, I'm not sure I’ll be the most useful either”
The man looked at him and nodded then he handed Kunikida a business card and said “if you finish high school and want to come work for me just call. I’m Yukichi Fukuzawa”
Fukuzawa then proceeded to walk away from the man still hanging on his shoulder. The old woman Kunikida had stopped from getting mugged came over and thanked him. Then Kunikida finished his walk home. Kunikida was 17 when he met Yukichi Fukuzawa for the first time.
Kunikida is accepted into a prestigious college in Japan. One of the top schools in the nation. He should feel proud but all that he feels is emptiness. College isn’t great he works hard still getting all A’s but it’s not rewarding. He turns on the T.V one day when he gets back to his dorm and watches the news. The headline is “new protectors of the people armed detective agency stops bombing”.
He continues to watch a picture of Yukichi Fukuzawa pops up and Kunikida remembers the man. The card is still in his wallet he pulls it out and stares at it. Was this his calling? His father would be furious but that didn’t matter. It didn’t break his ideals to join either so that was okay. Kunikida then thinks about his mother and how no one was able to save her. Maybe he could help someone and save them from death. He could stop a child from losing their mother at such a young age. He picks up the phone and dials the number.
After his call, he packs up his things and deposits his last payment to the college. He arrives at the agency late at night 3 people stand there. Yukichi Fukuzawa and a man and woman slightly older than him. He takes a deep breath and steps inside the office and begins a new chapter of his life. Kunikida was 18 when he joined the Armed Detective Agency
Kunikida is in a helicopter with the Port Mafia taking him to their base. The armed detective agency was framed for killing innocents and now they were being rescued by the Mafia. Junichiro, Kenji, and Yosano sat with him in the helicopter.
The red-headed port mafia boy moving it through the sky.
What the Suehiro had said earlier had been right his ideals did fail him. He would keep trying to reach perfection but he would never get there. His teammates had looked at him like he was crazy when he said that ideals couldn’t get them through everything they didn’t know.
His ideas were what kept him going he spent his whole life not trying to meet them but hoping he would never fail to do so. Kunikida wishes the world were black and white then everything would be easier but that wasn’t the case he was human after all.
The blade comes through the helicopter and stabs Kenji and Kunikida realizes what he has to do. He couldn’t let his ideals break, not here not now. He remembers the train how his mother had protected him from harm. Kunikida had to step up now, his friends would not die under his leadership.
He tells Junichirō to expose the truth and he jumps landing on the man who attacked their helicopter. Suehiro mocks him telling him that he’ll survive the fall. Kunikida takes a deep breath thinking about his choice then he says “My name is Kunikida Doppo. I will not let my ideals fall. With this life as fuel, I will fly for eternity” For a split second the world slows down and he takes him the world around him then, he makes a grenade. The second he hears it explode everything goes black. Kunikida is 22 years old when he flies.
