Kunikida grits his teeth. “I might have…insinuated that I have a partner.”
Dazai’s jaw drops.
“…and now Aya-chan expects me to bring them to the party.”
Kunikida expects laughter and teasing. He expects Ranpo to double over, cackling at him, and for Dazai to follow, because the two of them always revel in Kunikida’s suffering.
Instead, and objectively far worse, both of them declare in unison, “I’ll be your date!”

Kunikida pinched the bridge of his nose, exhaling slowly. “Osamu, enough! Take this seriously for once!”
The room fell silent.
Kunikida blinked, realizing what he had just said. A rare slip. His heart skipped a beat as he glanced around the table, gauging the reactions of his colleagues.
Or Kunikida accidentally calls Dazai by his first name, chaos ensues.

Katai sat up, rearranging himself so that he could face his guests.
“Who’s this, Kunikida?”
“This is Osamu Dazai, my colleague—”
“His partner, actually.” Dazai corrected, suddenly close to Doppo’s back.
Katai’s eyes widened, then blinked, turning to Doppo with open confusion.
“You have a partner?”
Doppo blinked back, uncomprehending.
“Well, yes. Of course I do.”
Dazai is one of the only Agency members who’s never met Katai Tayama. When Kunikida seeks Katai out for help with an assignment, Dazai sees the opportunity to create a misunderstanding and immediately takes it.
