Chapter 1: 'confirmation'

Chapter Text

It was a typical evening for the couple; they had a simple dinner together and were now resting in their lounge after filling their stomachs. Wei Wuxian was lounging on the couch, head resting on Lan Wangji's lap, as he scrolled through Instagram on his phone. Lan Wangji was also on his phone, but actually being productive as he was looking for a confirmation email for their date tomorrow - a special guqin recital that Wei Wuxian knew his boyfriend was very much excited for.

"Have you found it yet?" Wei Wuxian asks, setting his phone down onto the couch, tilting his head up to look at Lan Wangji. "Do you want me to take a look?"

"No, I have not, but I'm sure I put it in this folder here…." Lan Wangji replies, brows furrowing ever so slightly at the phone screen as he swipes through his email.

"Let me see." Wei Wuxian sits up beside Lan Wangji, leans his head on the other's shoulder, reaches across, and snatches the phone. "It'll be faster to just search for it like this." He taps the search bar at the top of the email app and types in 'confirmation', humming softly as he waits for the results. As emails begin popping up, Wei Wuxian scans through the search results, finding the email with their tickets for the guqin recital in the first few emails. But not before his eyes glance on a particular email that sends his heart into a frantic beating. He freezes, finger hovering above an email that is from an engagement ring company, with the subject "order confirmation - congratulations". He feels Lan Wangji freezing beside him, the silence stretching for what feels like an eternity.

Wei Wuxian blinks, and coughs, breaking the moment, and proceeds to click on the email for their date tomorrow. "Found it!" His own voice sounds too loud, and he wonders if his breathing is as erratic as his heartbeat. Lan Wangji is still frozen beside him, and Wei Wuxian can’t help but wonder if his boyfriend had turned into a jade sculpture. He slips the phone back into Lan Wangji’s hand, deciding that he would not say a word about what he- what they both saw.

Wei Wuxian picks up his own phone from the couch, laid his head back down onto Lan Wangji's lap, and opens up Instagram once more to distract himself. For a few minutes, he keeps scrolling, liking pictures of his family and friends and leaving comments as usual. But as the minutes pass, Wei Wuxian can't help but think over what had just occurred; he feels laughter bubbling through his throat and a giggle slips through. He peeks over at Lan Wangji from above his phone, and notices that the other seems to be holding in his laughter too, his lips turned up slightly at the corners. Wei Wuxian makes eye contact with Lan Wangji, and at that moment, the pair of them could no longer hold back their laughter. Wei Wuxian turns his face into Lan Wangji's abdomen, wrapping his arms around the other. He can feel the laughter vibrating through Lan Wangji.

"Why are we laughing, Wei Ying?" Lan Wangji asks, threading his fingers through Wei Wuxian's hair.

"I don't know, Lan Zhan, why are we laughing?" Wei Wuxian grins, innocently repeating the question back at him, turning his head back up to face his boyfriend.

"But you do know," Lan Wangji replies, raising an eyebrow. Wei Wuxian knows that Lan Wangji is not simply referring to the laughing.

"And so do you!" Wei Wuxian retorts, laughing once more. Lan Wangji has a fond smile on his face, but says nothing more. Wei Wuxian is silent for a while, before quietly asking, "Lan Zhan… is it… is it, well, you know… here?" Wei Wuxian whispers softly, eyes darting around their shared apartment, trying to see if anything had changed since the last time he had looked.

Lan Wangji nods. "Mn." His ears are tinged a soft red, but he offers no further explanation of the exact location.

Wei Wuxian jumps up excitedly, almost hitting his head on Lan Wangji's chin if it weren't for the latter's insanely good reflexes. "Can I guess where you kept it? Can we play the 'Hot or Cold' game, please?" Wei Wuxian puts on his best pouty face, trying his best to drag Lan Wangji up from the couch.

"Absolutely not." Lan Wangji furrows his eyebrows once more, shaking his head at Wei Wuxian, pulling the other back down to sit on the couch. Between the two, Lan Wangji still had superior strength, the only one between the two who woke up at the crack of dawn and did workouts in their spare room as Wei Wuxian slept blissfully in their bedroom.

"But Lan Zhan-" Wei Wuxian begins to protest, but he is quickly quieted by Lan Wangji's lips on his.

"Time for bed," Lan Wangji murmurs against his lips and Wei Wuxian giggles as he wraps his arms around Lan Wangji's shoulders.

"Only if you carry me." Wei Wuxian giggles as Lan Wangji effortlessly carries him to their bedroom in bridal style, Wei Wuxian snuggling his head into the crook of Lan Wangji's neck. Wei Wuxian would let it go tonight, utterly giddy with the knowledge that somewhere in their shared apartment there is an engagement ring that Lan Wangji had picked out specifically for him. Getting married in the future was something they discussed often and had planned for - so it wasn't a surprise in that sense - but knowing that Lan Wangji was actually going to propose to him made him so unbelievably excited. It wouldn't be tonight, and he doesn't know when Lan Wangji has planned to officially propose, or how the proposal would go; but Wei Wuxian couldn't wait to say yes, and he couldn’t wait for the day Lan Wangji would become his fiancé and he Lan Wangji’s.
