Chapter 1: Darkness

Chapter Text
The scream was a thing of nightmares and the Sect Juniors could only watch in horror as the Senior who had saved them, twice in the Lan case, collapsed to the ground, hands clutching at his eyes.
"Senior Mo!" the gentle Lan Sizhui quickly fell to his knees beside the ailing man.
"Jiang Cheng!" Hanguang Jun blocked the angry Sect Leader’s view. Jiang Cheng readied Zidian again when Lan Jingyi appeared beside Hanguang Jun.
"Nothing happened when you struck him. Surely you don't intend to do it again. You've already blinded him!" An intake of breath beside him drew Jiang Cheng’s attention to his nephew who was staring at the man he'd hit. It dawned on him that the man was also Jin Ling’s uncle. Regret started to settle in his stomach, not that he allowed it to show. Behind Hanguang Jun, Wei Wuxian was desperately trying to control the pain and his panic. He couldn't see! His eyes burned and the skin on each side was broken and blistered. He'd been hit by Zidian before but not like this.
• • •
When a hand landed on his arm Wei Wuxian flinched away, stumbling as he couldn't work out where anything was.
"Senior Mo! It's just me, Lan Sizhui. We met in Mo Village remember.'' Lan Sizhui said soothingly in an attempt to calm the injured Senior. Wei Wuxian focused on that voice, breathing through the pain. He needed to get away; to get off this mountain.
"Don’t touch me!" he ground out. Finding his feet he staggered away from the voices; no clue of where he was going.
"Senior Mo you’re hurt!" Sizhui tried again.
"Lil Apple!" he called, ignoring the junior trying to catch his arm. Behind him other feet followed. A misstep had him falling again and he knew he'd taken skin off his hands. Wei Wuxian hated how he'd felt at that moment; weak and vulnerable. His long-cursed temper flared and using the blood from his torn hands Wei Wuxian drew up a transporter talisman and activated it.
"Senior Mo that’s dangerous!"
• • •
It was dangerous, extremely so. With no anchor point there was no telling where he would end up, but Wei Wuxian was scared and desperate and crazy enough to try it. To a litany of no’s Wei Wuxian disappeared in a swirl of green light. He reappeared with a thud; landing hard on the ground, disorientated. Wei Wuxian had no idea where he landed, literally none because he couldn’t see anything! He felt the panic clawing up his throat again. He tried to keep his breathing even, drawing on memories of countless hours spent kite shooting blindfolded.
"Wen Ning! He can help me." Running his hand around the ground, Wei Wuxian hunted for a leaf. He found hard packed dirt, small clumps of grass and a bunch of sticks. Cursing, he selected the longest one and shakily got to his feet. His eyes were killing him, and he could feel the blood running down his cheeks. Now upright with some margin of balance he whistled, pooling what resentful energy he could to summon his friend. Now he could only wait and hope Wen Ning was close.
• • •
Wei Wuxian really hoped he was close by. His eyes were painful and he could only imagine how they looked. Over balancing Wei Wuxian stumbled backwards, his feet collided with something and he toppled back to the ground. The jarring rocked his world as his pain intensified, almost to the point where he missed the movement under his legs and the groan that followed. Scrambling off it and onto his knees Wei Wuxian blindly reached forward with his hands. There was another groan and Wei Wuxian could hear more movement. His fingers found fabric, good quality fabric. One of those idiots had grabbed him before the talisman fully activated. Feeling the person shift more Wei Wuxian shuffled backwards, wondering if he had time to run away and how successful he would be at it.
"Senior Mo? Senior Mo!" Sudden movement rapidly approaching had Wei Wuxian backing up even further.
• • •
The movement stopped.
"Senior Mo, its Lan Sizhui, I didn't mean to startle you. Please let me help." Wei Wuxian laughed, the sound hollow.
"They're going to think I kidnapped you! They'll never leave me alone now. Why would you do something as stupid as grab someone who was teleporting?! Have your teachers taught you nothing!" Lan Sizhui was taken aback more by Senior Mo’s hand gestures than his words. Was that concern? He eyed off the angry welts decorating Senior Mo's face.
"Please Senior Mo, please let me help." Wei Wuxian sighed.
"There’s a stream that way. Help me get there." Sizhui eagerly moved closely and carefully helped him to his feet before heading to where he'd pointed. Though he was curious....
"I can hear it." Wei Wuxian answered his unspoken question. Sizhui struggled to keep Wei Wuxian upright when he stumbled as they moved along.
• • •
They only travelled a short way before Sizhui could hear it too.
"Incredible" he breathed. Fumbling slightly, Wei Wuxian perched himself close to the stream; Sizhui sinking down with him.
"Can I wash your eyes?" he asked gently. Hesitating briefly Wei Wuxian nodded, knowing it was going hurt. Sizhui did his best to be gentle and thorough but there was only so much water could do.
"You need a healer."
"My eyes are shot young master Lan; no healer can save them. My... friend is coming, you should go." Reaching down he found the edge of his robes and tore a strip off. Sizhui removed it from his hands and soaked it in the stream before gently securing it around Wei Wuxian’s eyes.
"How could I leave you like this? You saved us twice."
"I used resentful energy."
"Still saved us." If Wei Wuxian could see he'd be giving Sizhui the stink eye.
• • •
Wei Wuxian flinched when he heard a sword being drawn.
"Ghost General!" Startled, Wei Wuxian made a grab in the direction of Sizhui’s voice.
"Wait! I called him." Now he could hear the chains he'd previously spotted. Trembling, he got up and headed towards them.
"Wen Ning?"
"Senior Mo!" a hand rested on his arm. The Ghost General snarled. Wei Wuxian slapped the hand.
"What’s wrong you my old friend?" Reaching forward he finally found Wen Ning and his fingers glided up until he found Wen Ning’s face.
"Why won’t you answer me?" he mused, cursing his lack of vision and the headache building behind his eyes. "Lan Sizhui what colour are his eyes?" Sizhui blinked at being addressed before cautiously moving up next to the Senior. He stared at the Ghost General. The Ghost General stared back. "Well?" Wei Wuxian nagged.
• • •
"Black, there’s no pupil. Senior Mo!" Wei Wuxian was running his hands all over Wen Ning at his words, finding something at the back of Wen Ning's head.
"What are these?"
"They look like nails."
"Pull them out." Lan Sizhui had no idea why he followed that instruction, but he did. Wen Ning screamed and the black receded in his eyes. Both he and Wei Wuxian dropped to the ground.
“Senior Mo!"
“You do realize I’m going to get blamed for kidnapping you." he said pointedly to the young man, unsure why he wasn’t leaving, “And you are willingly hanging around two dangerous people.”
"I'm not leaving you alone. You can't walk." Sizhui reiterated, though he was unsure of exactly what to do at this moment or why he was remaining.
"Is... Is he alright?"
"Wen Ning will be fine. He should come back to himself soon."
• • •
Wei Wuxian could feel himself fading and he desperately wanted to fall to pieces. He felt himself list to the side slightly before he was grabbed.
"Senior Mo we really need to get you to a healer." Wei Wuxian was trembling and he knew it. Unfortunately there was no way he could see a healer until Wen Ning was up and running.
"Not leaving Wen Ning."
"Master Wei?"
"And there goes that secret." thought Wei Wuxian, though he was much too pleased to hear a familiar friendly voice. The chains rattled and Wuxian felt the ground vibrate as Wen Ning kneeled in front of him.
"Master Wei your eyes."
"I had a little accident is all."
"He needs a healer!" Sizhui cut in somewhat emboldened by how docile the Ghost General appeared to be.
• • •
It appeared as though Wen Ning had not even noticed Sizhui but now he moved as if to shield Wei Wuxian from him.
"Who... Who are you?" Wei Wuxian sighed and gently patted what he hoped was his friend’s shoulder.
"Lan Sizhui, silly child grabbed me when I was using a teleport Talisman."
"Dangerous."
"Stupid."
Lan Sizhui frowned. He was not used to getting scolded. Wei Wuxian was now shaking the arm he'd grabbed.
"And now they're going to think I've abducted him!" he wailed, the despair in his tone only half real. Sizhui was unsure how he could tell but he thought Wen Ning was expressing some fond exasperation for the other man. Then he remembered something that was said earlier.
"Senior Wei? Sect Leader Jiang was correct?”
• • •
If possible, the man in front of him paled further and Sizhui realized it might not have been the best moment to bring it up. Wen Ning stood abruptly, chains rattling, pulling Wuxian up with him. Sizhui held his hands out placating.
"I meant no harm. I just..." Wei Wuxian breathed out.
"Yes, I'm Wei Wuxian. No, I do not possess this body; it was given to me by a blood ritual of which you would know nothing about." Sizhui was conflicted, on one hand he had heard many tales of the Yiling Patriarch, on the other Sizhui had been told to never judge someone without all the information. Not to mention he felt somehow drawn to this Senior in front of him.
"Master Wei!" Wei Wuxian’s resilience gave out leaving Wen Ning to cradle his injured body.
Chapter 2: Courage
Chapter Text
Sparing the young master with them a glance, Wen Ning set off to find some civilization. After a few seconds Sizhui followed. Sizhui actually struggled to keep up with the fierce corpse he was willingly following. When they finally happened upon a village Lan Sizhui recognized it as Yiling. The Ghost General had halted on the outskirts and was looking uncertain.
"Is something wrong?"
"I will be recognized. I stand out like this." Wen Ning wiggled his arms and the chains rattled. Lan Sizhui thought for a moment.
"I could try to remove them with my sword." he suggested carefully. Wen Ning searched his eyes, for what Sizhui didn’t know, but he seemed to like what he found. Gently setting Wei Wuxian down Wen Ning held out his arms to Lan Sizhui. In the last second before his sword swung down Sizhui realized he was breaking the rules of his sect. Moments later chains rattled to the ground.
• • •
"They won't recognize Master Wei with the cloth around his eyes, but me...." Wen Ning seemed unsure.
"Would Senior Wei's mask work? I picked it up when Sect Leader Jiang... when it was knocked off.'' Lan Sizhui held it out. There was a black mark across the nose portion and the ribbon was broken. It was easily fixed and, though it didn't quite fit, it did the job of hiding his identity. Lan Sizhui watched as the Ghost General easily lifted Senior Wei and then fell in step with him as they walked into town. No one payed them any attention, which Sizhui might have commented on had he not been wondering why everything here felt familiar. Sizhui paid for their room and handed his coin pouch over to Wen Ning, much to his surprise.
"Young Master Lan?"
"Senior Wei will need medicine yes? I won’t know what to pick." Wen Ning hesitated. "Master Wen I give you my word I won't do anything to harm Senior Wei." Sizhui bowed low.
• • •
Flustered, Wen Ning fled the room leaving a shocked Sizhui in his wake. A pained chuckle startled Sizhui.
"You embarrassed him."
"Me? He's the Ghost General!" Lan Sizhui decided he didn’t like it when Senior Wei frowned.
"He is Wen Ning. What other people call him is irrelevant."
"My apologies." Wei Wuxian shrugged. He was sweating and pale as a corpse.
"Senior Wei please lie back down."
"Where are we?"
"Yiling."
"Oh." Wei Wuxian sounded sad. Sizhui moved closer.
“Rest Senior Wei, Master Wen should be back soon." Sizhui rested a damp cloth on his forehead.
"You’re a good kid." Wei Wuxian suddenly murmured, he was trembling and Lan Sizhui feared he was getting ill. Wei Wuxian reached out a hand, mumbling to himself all the while.
• • •
Lan Sizhui reached for that hand and Wei Wuxian grasped his like a lifeline. Wiping his face Sizhui couldn’t help but reflect on his actions. He knew the Elders would be disappointed and outraged at his behaviour so far, but he had the feeling his adopted father would approve. There was a light knock at the door which drew Sizhui from his thoughts. Wen Ning entered and even with his stiff features Sizhui could tell he was surprised to see him comforting Senior Wei. Wen Ning moved forward and asked Sizhui to boil some water. They peeled back the cloth and Wen Ning painstakingly cleaned every section of skin. Wei Ying was biting down hard on a scrap of rolled up cloth to avoid screaming.
"I don’t have to remove your eyes Master Wei, but I don’t think you'll be able to use them again. They’re so damaged, if my sister were still alive....” Breathing heavily Wei Wuxian held his old friend’s arm, offering what comfort he could.
• • •
Lan Sizhui watched the pair, feeling as though he was intruding. Wen Ning patted Wei Wuxian’s hand before grinding some herbs together and applying them to the damaged areas. He also applied some to a clean strip of black cloth and rewrapped Wei Wuxian’s eyes.
"This should help with the pain and hopefully keep any infections at bay." Wei Wuxian nodded tiredly, unclenching his teeth and allowing the fabric to fall from his mouth.
"We can’t remain here." Wen Ning nodded, then realized his error.
"You just nodded didn’t you." Wei Wuxian said teasingly.
"No Master Wei!" Wen Ning tried to deny, complete with hand gestures. Lan Sizhui couldn't help himself. He laughed. Two heads swindled instantly in his direction.
"I'm sorry!" He blushed bright red.
"What's your birth name?" Lan Sizhui blinked at the change of topic.
"Lan Yuan."
• • •
Lan Sizhui had no idea what was wrong with these two seniors. After hearing his name they'd both looked so happy he thought he was going to get hugged. Strangely he realized he actually wouldn't mind it if they had of done so. Instead they'd exchanged a glance and then Wen Ning was insisting Wei Wuxian get some rest, to which he grudgingly obliged; stretching out in the bed.
"Lan Sizhui should also sleep, your curfew is soon." Sizhui paused, bewildered at the now fond tone Senior Wei used and at how he was aware of their sleeping patterns.
"I will keep watch Young Master." Was it Sizhui’s imagination or was Wen Ning’s tone different too?! Utterly baffled he moved over to another bed and crawled into it. He should probably be more afraid to sleep in the same room as two very dangerous people who were technically criminals, but all Sizhui could feel were the day’s events catching up with him and he welcomed sleep when it came.
• • •
When Wei Wuxian and Lan Sizhui disappeared the remaining cultivators had been stunned. Lan Jingyi had called out the moment he saw his childhood friend doing something reckless but it was too late and now he was gone.
"Where did they go?" demanded a Lanling Sect Disciple.
"Unknown." was Lan Wangji’s reply.
"You seem unconcerned by the fact that that ‘stranger’ has kidnapped your Disciple." Jiang Cheng accused.
“Not kidnapped."
“What else would you call it?" disbelief coloured Jin Ling’s tone as he barged into the conversation.
"Sizhui grabbed Senior Mo, not the other way around! Senior Mo may be a bit unstable, but he saved us at Mo Manor. He was hurt and Sizhui would have wanted to help." Lan Jingyi was brave enough to include Jin Ling and Jiang Cheng in his glare. "Sizhui is a kind, honourable person!" Jiang Cheng looked ready to string Jingyi up.
• • •
A look from Lan Wangji silenced Jingyi, and despite him not being as close to Hanguang Jun as Sizhui was, Jingyi thought the man was somewhat pleased at his words. As they took their leave Jingyi looked to his Senior, unsure how to ask his question.
"Speak." Hanguang Jun was so observant!
"Will Sizhui be alright?"
“Yes."
"Are we going to look for him?"
"No."
"What! But why?" Lan Jingyi thought he’d pushed his luck with his outburst but all he got was a straight answer
"Sizhui will return when he's able. He is quite safe with that Master; no harm will befall him. Are you injured?"
"Huh?"
"Neck.'"
"Oh I got grabbed there. Senior Mo saved me. It's fine."
"Mmm" conversation closed, thought Jingyi as they headed for home.
• • •
Lan Sizhui woke at first light like he was raised and it took him a moment to recognize his surroundings. Sitting up he moved into the Lotus pose to meditate. He felt a set of eyes on him but ignored it in favour of settling his mind. Some time later a light touch on his shoulder pulled his attention back to the present. Ordering his eyes Sizhui came face to face with a plate of food held by Wen Ning. Hurriedly Sizhui relieved the man of his burden.
"Thank you." Nibbling on a pastry Sizhui watched the Ghost General gently reapply the medicine before coaxing Senior Wei awake; helping the man swallow some tea afterwards.
“Are we leaving today Master Wei?" Wei Wuxian nodded.
“Yes we'll accompany Young Sizhui here as close as we can to his Sect, then we'll part ways." Swallowing quickly Sizhui sat his food down and moved over to them.
"I owe you a debt for saving us at Mo Manor, I would prefer to remain with you until it is repaid." he said solemnly.
• • •
"I’m reasonably certain your Sect will want you to return, particularly Lan Zhan. You two seemed close."
"Hanguang Jun raised me." Sizhui answered honestly. Wei Wuxian wanted so badly to ask about his upbringing and what his childhood was like. Judging by the unusually excited body beside him, Wen Ning felt the same.
"Now see, he will definitely want you to return." Wei Wuxian declared instead.
"How can you be so cheerful!? How are you going to manage like you are now?" Sizhui demanded, at the end of his patience. He was immediately ashamed by his outburst but surprisingly Senior Wei only laughed.
"Ah I will learn to do without; I’m amazingly adaptable when required after all!" he boasted. "Plus, I have Wen Ning for all the strong stuff, so long as he wants to hang around me." Sizhui marveled at the positive outlook Senior Wei maintained.
• • •
With less grace than was expected of a Lan Sect Disciple Sizhui grudgingly accepted defeat and agreed to return home. Wen Ning had managed to find a better fitting mask and returned Wei Wuxian’s to him. With a grin Wei Wuxian fixed it on over his blindfold.
"How do I look?" He almost overbalanced when he did a twirl. Sizhui giggled at his playfulness. "It is a shame I don’t have my sword anymore. It would make an amazing cane." They left the area with Wei Wuxian walking between them. As they got further from town Wei Wuxian began experimenting with his new body’s spiritual prowess, expanding his other senses to feel his way around with them. Despite Wei Wuxian tiring quickly and having to stop often they were making good time. On foot Wei Wuxian reckoned it would take a few days to get near to Sizhui's home, maybe a little bit longer if they had any distractions.
• • •
They camped out the first two nights; Wen Ning hunting for Wei Wuxian and Wei Wuxian trying to coax Sizhui into eating meat. Sizhui, though missing this fellow Disciples, particularly Jingyi, and Hanguang Jun, was actually having fun travelling with them. He was also learning a lot. Senior Wei was always happy to explain anything Sizhui wanted to know and spoke in an easy-going manner. Nothing at all like Lan Qiren's lectures. Senior Wei had been delighted to hear Lan Wangji had multiple pet rabbits, sharing with Sizhui and Wen Ning how he had gifted a pair of males to Lan Zhan during their school years. That line of thought had him talking about Lan Zhan for hours, regaling Sizhui with the adventures of their shared time together as youths. Sizhui listened with rapt excitement. Very rarely did Hanguang Jun speak of the past and Sizhui loved this opportunity to learn more of his father figure.

Chapter Text
When they finally stopped at another town Wei Wuxian declared they'd stay the night because he wanted wine. Wen Ning sighed but offered no resistance. They wandered on the main stretch of road through the middle of town when something caught Wei Wuxian’s attention; a street vendor selling robes, calling out their wares and prices to all that would listen. Wen Ning and Sizhui found themselves dragged towards that vendor.
"Any darker ones?" Wei Wuxian asked both the vendor and his travelling companions.
"Oh yes young master, I'll definitely have something to your taste." replied the vender.
"Not for me, for this young master, white is not appropriate for travelling."
"Ah young Master is wise. White is indeed a very inconvenient colour." Sizhui was astonished at how quickly Wei Wuxian argued the price down and soon found himself paying for a new set of clothes. Unsure of what happened, he did not resist as he was tugged down the street.
• • •
Wei Wuxian kept his nose peeled for the scent of alcohol and listened well for the gossip that accompanied a tavern. At the same time, he conversed happily with Sizhui; who knew a Lan could be such a good travelling companion? His eyes burned a little, the skin around them healing nicely. A small body collided with his and Wei Wuxian would have fallen if not for Wen Ning’s weight at his back. He shot a hand out and secured the arm of his small assailant.
"Oww. Mister you’re hurting me!"
"And you, young man have been rifling through my pockets. Since I know they're empty I know you didn't take anything, but in future be more careful with your marks." Wei Wuxian advised.
"Senior Wei!" Sizhui admonished, appalled he would encourage the behaviour. Wei Wuxian briefly switched his attention to Sizhui; even without his eyes he managed to convey his disappointment, whether it was at him or the world in general Sizhui didn’t know. Dragging the boy with them, Wei Wuxian purchased two pastries and gave them to him.
• • •
Even the vendor was surprised. Who would waste money on an orphan?
"Sizhui, not everyone can live and learn in a Sect. They don’t get food and protection or somewhere to sleep at night that isn’t a cold alleyway." The boy polished off both pastries while Wei Wuxian was speaking and was hovering around. Smiling, Wei Wuxian bought him another two but told him to save them for later. The boy dutifully obeyed.
"Can I come with you Mister? I'll be real good."
Sighing, Wei Wuxian knelt in front of him, “Young man I can’t pick up any more stragglers. Perhaps when my journey is complete, I'll come back and visit." The boy pouted but nodded. He threw himself at Wei Wuxian and gave him a quick hug before sprinting off.
"Master Wei always was good with children." Wen Ning said, "I was always too shy and they picked on me." Sizhui frowned, unable to picture anyone picking on the sweet, gentle Wen Ning. He simply couldn’t see this man as the legendary Ghost General anymore, despite having heard many different tales.
• • •
With the child dealt with they followed Wei Wuxian’s nose to a tavern and booked a single room for the night. Settling in, both Wen Ning and Wei Wuxian insisted Sizhui take the bed.
"You should change robes." Wei Wuxian said, prodding him towards the privacy screen. Hesitantly Sizhui agreed.
"Master Wei, let me check your eyes please." Wen Ning never stuttered around just them anymore and his mask was only removed when Wei Wuxian asked him too. He felt a measure of comfort from it. Wei Wuxian untied his own mask and blindfold before facing Wen Ning. In just a few short days he'd somewhat mastered his other senses and, providing he kept his focus, Wei Wuxian was confident in his ability to move around unaided.
"The skin has almost completely healed Master but your eyes have a sheer over them. Do they still hurt?"
"At times. More so when they're not covered.”
"Sensitive, to light, perhaps." Wen Ning mused. He was gently retying Wei Wuxian’s ribbon and mask when Sizhui emerged.
• • •
Wei Wuxian could feel the atmosphere change; Wen Ning’s hand now still on his ribbon.
"Is something wrong?" he shifted uneasily.
"Young Master Lan looks somewhat like you." Wen Ning choked out. Now Wei Wuxian felt the lead settle in his stomach, he desperately wanted to see what Sizhui looked like in his colours. His eyes stung as they tried to cry. If Lan Sizhui was who he thought, he was the one Wei Wuxian agonized over missing out on being able to see him do things; both in the past and future. Wei Wuxian let out a whimper. It was now truly dawning on him just how much he'd lost with his eyesight. Sizhui was already rushing over to comfort his dark Senior when Wen Ning announced.
"I am dead." Wei Wuxian actually sobbed at that and only Sizhui grabbing his hands prevented him rubbing his eyes. He caught himself just before he could glare at his undead friend. Wen Ning realized he would have to explain.
"Could you not use empathy on me Master? See through my eyes?”
• • •
The silence reigned but Wen Ning could practically hear the gears turning in his Master’s head. Sizhui's hands still encasing his, Wei Wuxian pondered the possibilities.
"It would be possible in theory." he concluded. Sizhui looked alarmed.
"But… Couldn’t it be dangerous? What if you can’t get back?" Was this panic what Hanguang Jun had to deal with every time Wei Wuxian got an idea in his head?
"It is not without risks." agreed Wei Wuxian. Wen Ning reached out his hand. He was willing regardless of the risks. Tentatively Wei Wuxian reached out his own, removing it from Sizhui's too tight grip.
"If something goes wrong just stab me."
"What!?" Too late their hands connected and Wei Wuxian sat up, posture the straightest Sizhui had ever seen from the man. Nervously he looked between the two men as they remained unmoving; hands clenching around his new robes. He wished he knew why it was so important for Senior Wei to see him in them!
• • •
What felt like ages to Sizhui was really only a few moments before both men moved. Wen Ning toppled sideways, catching himself before he hit the ground. Wei Wuxian hunched over and Sizhui could see the blood run from his nose. Without even thinking he reached forward and wiped it off. A hand grasped his wrist.
"Senior Wei."
"I’m fine. You look amazing." Wei Wuxian could feel his eyes burning again, "Wen Ning?"
"I'm alright Master Wei."
"I wish you wouldn't call me that. Are you sure you feel alright?"
"It was disorientating but there was no discomfort."
"Good. It was a great first attempt."
"First attempt? Senior Wei your nose bled." Sizhui protested.
"I could have died.'' he idly mentioned.
"Senior Wei!"
"Sizhui I got to see again. I got to see you. That’s worth the risk as far as I'm concerned.”
• • •
Sizhui had nothing to say to that. Senior Wei continued to be a source of shock and contradictions to him.
"We'll need to practice of course, providing you’re willing, Wen Ning. It is entirely up to you. Currently though I can’t see anything. My senses are all over the place." Wei Wuxian was not fond of feeling so vulnerable again after gaining some measure of security, but if he got to see Sizhui and Lan Zhan and the rest of his estranged family it was worth the backlash.
"I don't mind Master Wei? But not if it effects your health." Wei Wuxian pouted. He'd get his way. They spent the rest of the day wandering around the town. Wei Wuxian had to walk with a hand on someone’s arm or he'd bump into or trip over things. It was a horrible feeling; he would definitely need to find his focus again. But all in all, it was a relaxing day with people he cared about. When they finished for the day he had a cane to use in emergencies and so he blended in better with the general populace.
• • •
A little further away at Cloud Recess, Lan Wangji was leaving to begin tracking down the origins of the hand found in Mo Village. He would also be inquiring around for the missing duo. Away from the Juniors he allowed himself the luxury of feeling a little worried. Sizhui had been raised well and carried all of the allocated money given to the juniors at that time so he shouldn't run out. But that teleport could have dumped them anywhere. As for Master Mo, well he knew with all his heart that that was Wei Ying and, for him to be injured in such a way.... Lan Wangji worried for his health, both physically and mentally. Wei Ying had been terrified, desperate and in pain when he'd made that Talisman. Lan Wangji now had no reason not to at least check on him if he could. The hand was pointing him towards Qinghe so that was where he would start looking. Extra money pouch stored, Lan Wangji set off on foot down the path.
• • •
Jiang Cheng was unsettled in ways he hadn't been for years. He was currently gazing out over the water at nothing, his mind in turmoil. He had many memories of his adopted sibling, and a whole bundle of twisted and jumbled emotions with them. He had so many regrets and so much anger. The whole cultivation world was under the opinion he’d killed his brother, but Jiang Cheng knew Wei Wuxian had killed himself with the opportunity Jiang Cheng provided. He also knew his anger was justified; Wei Wuxian had done a lot of things Jiang Cheng didn’t understand and couldn't comprehend. But still.... The day Wei Wuxian fell back into the Burial Mound was etched into his mind; his relaxed accepting expression caused Jiang Cheng a lot of heart ache, knowing he found peace in his actions and moment of death. And now that scream, Jiang Chiang was sure that scream would haunt his dreams for the rest of his life. Zidian had been used as a weapon, a restraint and occasional exorcism tool but despite what everyone thought, he’d never used it for torture. Knowing he'd probably blinded his brother just made him angrier. Sighing, he decided to join Jin Ling in Qinghe.
Chapter 4: Company
Chapter Text
Much to Sizhui’s angst, Senior Wei continued to practice with Wen Ning as they journeyed towards Qinghe. He had to rely on a cane made of bamboo to guide himself after each attempt but no longer lost blood either. Wen Ning on the other hand suffered no effects whatsoever. He gave over complete access to Wei Wuxian when they made the attempts. Sizhui had never seen empathy used in such a way. Then again, he'd never seen anyone like Senior Wei before.
“Jingyi would like you." Wei Wuxian blinked at the sudden statement before thinking back.
"The young master who threatened me back at Mo Manor?'' Sizhui blushed on behalf of his friend.
"He means well. He's very similar to you, actually.'' Now Sizhui thought about it, the two had a very similar personality; perhaps that was why he liked Senior Wei so much.
"Is that so? Well he's your friend so he must be a good person." Sizhui blushed
• • •
"Master Wei, what do you intend to do after we return Young Master Sizhui to his family?" Sizhui was eager to hear his answer as well. Wei Wuxian pondered for a while before giving his reply.
"I hadn't really thought about. I like to live in the moment. The world is constantly in motion and change just around the corner. What’s the point in making plans?" Wei Wuxian felt bitter thinking of the past and his previous life's plans. Wen Ning seemed to realise where his mind had gone and offered a distraction.
“What about that child in that last town we travelled through? Will you visit him?" Wei Wuxian brightened.
"Of course! I said I would. I have many things I could teach him." An idea started to form in his head, but Wei Wuxian brutally squashed it. He would ask for nothing more than the second chance he'd been given. It never paid to be greedy. Wen Ning shifted closer until their shoulders brushed together. Wei Wuxian gently smiled and grasped at the arm and support offered. Sizhui found their actions familiar.
• • •
Qinghe was a bustling place, far busier than any they'd visited so far. Wei Wuxian chatted happily with several folk; gathering information on the surrounding area. No one mentioned a kidnapped Gusu disciple, so Wei Wuxian was thinking he may be in the clear for that at least. With so many people milling about he relied on his cane a fair bit, his senses slightly overwhelmed by the amount of energy he could feel everywhere.
"It's only a day’s travel southeast of here to reach Cloud Recesses, Senior Mo." Sizhui supplied. With so many people in earshot and being in a main village Sizhui reverted to senior Mo for safeties sake. Wei Wuxian looked sad, Wen Ning as well.
"Then I guess this is where we'll part ways.”
"Perhaps I could get an early start tomorrow. Today’s walk was long." Wen Ning nodded in agreement.
"Yes Master Mo, one more afternoon with us couldn’t hurt."
• • •
Throwing his hands up, and consequently his cane, Wei Wuxian walked away from the conniving duo; said duo exchanging grins behind his back.
"I can hear your happiness! Stop it!" He called back to them. A hand grabbed his arm, testing Wei Wuxian's restraint.
"Young Master you look in need of a Talisman, I have here line ones of the Yiling Patriarch. A cure for any disease, they can even exorcise your problems away!" He was stacking papers into Wei Wuxian’s free hand when Wei Wuxian felt an above average energy coming up on them quickly. The vendor was shoved backwards, Wei Wuxian hearing the sound of wood breaking.
"Why did you kick me?"
"I kicked you for daring to mention Wei Wuxian, be grateful I didn't kill you!" Immediately Wei Wuxian recognised the haughty voice of his nephew Jin Ling. He felt an impending headache. Oh, this brat, he had all that skill but a terrible temperament."
• • •
Jin Ling noticed his presence and Wei Wuxian felt him come closer.
"You found your way here? What of the disciple you took?"
"So many questions from the brat who couldn't even crawl off the ground." Wei Wuxian mocked and then his worst nightmare arrived at the joyous call of Jin Ling.
"Fairy!" At the first bark Wei Wuxian seized up, by the second he was sprinting down the street screaming. He lost his cane and was too panicked to focus. He crashed into people and their carts alike. Hearing his cries Sizhui and Wen Ning were trying to get to him. Jin Ling followed, finding some enjoyment in his ex-uncle's screams. He found less when Wei Wuxian tripped and careened into a set of unused stalls at the end of the crowded laneway. Numerous splinters tore his sleeves, but Wei Wuxian felt none of them as his panic overruled everything. Jin Ling called Fairy back to his side unsure of what to do.
• • •
Wei Wuxian was aware the dog had backed up but couldn’t get his mind to focus. He got a shock to his senses when a powerful energy appeared in front of him, close enough to touch. The new arrival said nothing, but Wei Wuxian heard the rustling of robes and receding footsteps as Jin Ling stormed away. More movement from in front of him had Wei Wuxian flinching back further into the broken wood.
"Senior Mo!" chorused two voices.
"Hanguang Jun!" Sizhui sketched a quick bow to his father figure before crouching down next to Wei Wuxian, beside Wen Ning.
"Senior Mo, you’re hurt." He said dismayed. Together he and Wen Ning lifted Wei Wuxian from the debris. They were minor injuries and would heal without treatment, but Wei Wuxian still trembled as he stood before Hanguang Jun. Finding his voice Wei Wuxian bowed to Lan Zhan.
"My sincere thanks Hanguang Jun, your timing is impeccable." Inwardly startled, Lan Zhan reached to lift Wei Ying from his bow only to find himself staring into blackness.
• • •
"Hanguang Jun be gentle with senior Mo!" Sizhui beseeched. To Lan Zhan's consternation he realised his control had slipped and he was gripping Master Mo's arms quite tightly. Instantly he let go and moved back a bit.
"Wei Ying never need bow to me." he said strongly, causing surprise and shock in both Lan Sizhui and Wen Ning. Wei Wuxian on the other hand was not caught off guard by his observation.
"Nothing gets past you does it, Lan Zhan?" Any reply Lan Zhan may have made was cut off by the street vendor Jin Ling kicked running up with Wei Wuxian's cane.
"Thank you Young Master!" He thrust the Yiling Patriarch papers and Wei Wuxian’s cane at him. "You can take these, and I’ll tell you about the goings on around here. You’re new in town yes?" He continued on to tell them all about the strange happenings at Walker Ridge and exactly why they should avoid travelling there. In the end he left without telling them much of Qinghe.
• • •
Unfortunately his words would go unheeded as Wei Wuxian found the idea of such a place fascinating. Now that Lan Zhan was here he could leave Sizhui in his care and investigate.
"Lan Zhan, l almost forgot I needed to clarify something. I did not kidnap Sizhui."
"Mmm, know this." Lan Zhan agreed readily.
"So I assume you’ll take Sizhui with you now and we'll part ways." Lan Zhan looked at Wen Ning and he had a fair idea who that person was, still he was reluctant to part.
"Senior Mo you said I didn’t have to go till tomorrow." Sizhui protested.
"Sizhui, I want to go investigate that bunker. It’s not appropriate for me to drag you into a potentially dangerous situation. And Jin Ling is here, I bet anything he's investigating this as well, so delaying isn’t an option."
“Will go with you. It may be relevant to my own investigation." Silence....
• • •
Hanguang Jun stared expectantly at the small group.
"Lan Zhan, I can see where Sizhui gets his persistence from." Sizhui looked quite proud of that statement.
"Very well, you and I will investigate; Sizhui you will remain with A-Ning until we return. Go find an inn and book some rooms." Lan Zhan brought out the spare coin pouch he carried and handed it over. Sizhui had no reason to argue, especially not with Hanguang Jun around. Wen Ning on the other hand stepped closer to Wei Wuxian.
"Are you sure?" Wei Wuxian patted his arm. "Lan Zhan is quite capable of looking after me and even... even crippled as I am 1 can still protect myself if need be."
"No harm will befall him, you have my word" Hanguang Jun offered a small bow to Wen Ning, making him retreat behind Sizhui, all boldness gone.

Chapter Text
As they walked together, leaving behind cobbled stone for a dirt path, Wei Wuxian questioned Lan Zhan on his task.
"The hand pointed you here?!"
"Mm."
"I can’t believe Brother Nie Huaisang earned the nickname Head Shaker. Ahh how he must of struggled after his brother’s death. No one investigated how such a strong man died?"
"I was not there. I only know he suddenly went mad and died. It is said he suffered Qi deviation" Up ahead somewhere a dog barked and Wei Wuxian instinctively ducked behind Lan Zhan, burying his face in Lan Zhan's back. "Wei Ying, the dog is not close." Embarrassed, Wei Ying moved away, clearing his throat. He could feel the eyes on him.
"Don’t look at me like that." he pouted.
"Why are you afraid of dogs?" Lan Zhan was genuinely curious; after all he had seen Wei Wuxian smile at his own death.
• • •
Wei Wuxian sighed and supposed he owed Lan Zhan an honest answer even if he hated talking about it.
“My parents died when I was around four years old. I loitered around Yiling for two years before Uncle Jiang found me. Each day was a constant battle for food. Often I would find myself fighting the local stray dogs for a bun or pastry. I very rarely won." Lan Zhan couldn't imagine that kind of life; though his own childhood had its difficulties he had never want for food or warmth. Wei Wuxian laughed.
"Uncle Jiang made Jiang Cheng get rid of his dogs when I panicked seeing them the first time. He was so angry with me. It seems to run in the family, Jin Ling hates me too." Lan Zhan was not used to dealing with a despondent Wei Ying and was at a loss with what to say or do to comfort him. Luckily another bark sounded.
• • •
After that Lan Zhan had to proceed with Wei Wuxian hanging off his arm. They'd determined the dog was Jin Ling’s so clearly something was going on.
"Perhaps you should wait here?" suggested Lan Zhen as Wei Ying's trembling increased. He got a glare in response. They found the dog hovering near a hole that must lead into the bunkers. Shooing it away Lan Zhan followed Wei Ying inside. They'd barely gone twenty metres when a pressure in Wei Wuxian’s head built up, causing him to flinch. It sounded like the Burial Mounds, only not as severe. As he swayed slightly on the spot, shaking his head, Lan Zhan’s hand found his elbow.
"Bad?"
"Loud." Wei Ying clarified. He didn’t remove Lan Zhan’s hand, relying on him to help him forward. They were steps away from a main chamber when the pressure built again. This time Wei Wuxian staggered sideways and would have fallen if not for Lan Zhan’s strong grip.
"Thank you.” he murmured.
• • •
"Alright?" Wei Wuxian sighed.
"I'm just a little bit more sensitive since losing my eyesight”
"Wei Ying was always sensitive."
"Lan Zhan!" As they spoke, they proceeded into the room ahead. It was full of stone coffins. With each one opened the dizziness in Wei Wuxian increased.
"Do you see Jin Ling?" He'd tried calling out with no answer.
"Inquiry." replied Lan Zhan. Wei Wuxian was horrified when they discovered he was in the wall.
"He's alive." A sigh of relief escaped him before he felt the pull of resentful energy. Fumbling a little he found Lan Zhan’s sword and used it to focus his energy before prodding the wall. Wei Wuxian wondered if Lan Zhan was frowning at him. He felt the sword hit something and he staggered back as the resentful energy showered him with images. A presence next to him refocused his attention. Together they carried Jin Ling out only to spot nearby someone rushing from the scene, Fairy on their heels.
• • •
Taking Jin Ling’s full weight, Wei Wuxian sent Lan Zhan after them. Struggling back into town took a huge amount of focus but he finally managed it. Exhausted and feeling sick he stumbled into the first inn he came across. Wei Wuxian determined his friends weren't here before booking a room with money pinched from Jin Ling. He settled the boy down on the only bed in the room before removing his dirty robes and, in the process, he came across a dark energy on his leg. Someone or something had cursed his nephew! How dare they?! Wei Wuxian knew he couldn’t break the curse and began transferring it instead. He was still trying to coral all the residual curse energy in Jin Ling’s body, blinking under his mask to remain conscious, when the door burst open and in stepped his brother; his very angry brother.
"Get away from him." Jiang Cheng snarled. Wei Wuxian could hear the cackles from Zidian and realised sadly the only reason he had not been hit yet was Jin Ling’s proximity.
• • •
"Don’t be an idiot, he’s been cursed! I'm transferring it to me."
“Step way."
"Jiang Cheng!" Jiang Cheng pulled up at Wei Wuxian’s tone. Cautiously he shifted closer to watch.
"Do you know what you’re doing at least?" His tone was no less hostile.
"More than you. Can you see if I have it all?" Jiang Cheng almost flinched at the not so subtle reminder about the man's lack of vision. Reaching forward he uncovered more of his nephew’s leg and watched as the last of the curse drained into Wei Wuxian.
"You have it all." he murmured. Body shaking, Wei Wuxian let the connection, both physical and spiritual, drop. Jiang Cheng was doing his best to ignore the man next to him in favour of checking over Jin Ling when a weight thudded into his side.
• • •
"Sorry." Wei Wuxian slurred. Shuffling away from Jiang Cheng he searched around for his cane with shaking fingers. He could already feel the pain from the curse spreading up his leg and as of that moment he wanted to curl up in the corner and die, the last few hours’ events catching up with him. Jiang Cheng felt conflicted and he didn’t like it. The man he was positive was Wei Wuxian, who else would be stupid enough to transfer a curse onto themselves, was on his knees, taking deep shuddering breaths. He'd found his cane and was clutching it across his chest. All in all, he looked pitiful and Jiang Cheng felt his traitorous heart ache with guilt. Jiang Cheng moved towards him, to do what he wasn't sure. Wei Wuxian wiggled backwards pressing into the wall.
"Stop that! I haven’t done anything." A manic giggle erupted from Wei Wuxian. He was about to answer when chaos arrived. A shrill bark sounded before the door burst open and in charged Jin Ling’s dog. Jin Ling bolted upright, calling out to Fairy as he did so.
• • •
Hearing the initial bark, followed by the bang of the door, Wei Wuxian whimpered and tried to put as much distance between him and the sound of his nightmares as possible. Unable to stand yet he ended up squished into a corner, cane forgotten as he gripped his own arms; fingers digging in. Wei Wuxian couldn't hold in the small sounds of distress he made, causing Jiang Cheng to yell at him.
"Will you shut up!" Fairy barked menacingly at his tone, causing Wei Wuxian to scream. He was beyond terrified; his senses were fried, the demon reincarnate was somewhere in the room and Jiang Cheng was being weird. Wei Wuxian was barely able to form a coherent thought let alone defend himself; he truly was at his brother’s mercy. Realisation slid over him and Wei Wuxian found a certain calm with the storm of his soul.
"Do it."
"Do what?" Jin Ling questioned, confused by the abrupt change in his estranged uncle.
"Kill me." Jin Ling and Jiang Cheng gaped at him
"No killing Wei Ying." another voice intervened, deep and strong in its conviction.
• • •
Wei Wuxian turned his head in the direction of the new arrival; warmth filling him at the safe energy he felt.
"Lan Zhan?"
"No killing." Sure enough, Lan Wangji strode straight into the room and positioned himself as a shield for Wei Ying. Jiang Cheng glared at Lan Wangji, rising to his full height to do so. Jin Ling looked between the two nervously.
"Uncle?" Jiang Cheng spared a glance at his nephew. The boy looked tired and ill, he needed rest. Another look at Wei Wuxian tugged at his heartstrings again.
"You saved Jin Ling, now get out of my sight!" Lan Zhan took that as his cue; turning around he scooped Wei Wuxian up into his arms and then left as abruptly as he’d arrived. Wei Wuxian said nothing as he was carried down the street, discreetly trying to find something to calm his mind. Hearing Lan Zhan’s heartbeat, Wei Ying pressed closer; the constant beating soothing him. As his breathing eased and his mind cleared Wei Ying noticed those beats were speeding up.
• • •
He rested a hand over Lan Zhan’s heart, the beats sped up again. Worried, Wei Ying tugged on his robe.
“Am I too heavy? I can feel your heart straining. Put me down, I think I can walk now. Lan Zhan?" If anything, Lan Zhan’s hold tightened.
"Lan Zhan?"
"It is fine." Wei Wuxian sighed but relented.
"Did you catch the person you were chasing?"
"Mmm, another Inn."
"We're going there now?"
"Hm"
"What about Sizhui and my companion."
"Be fine."
Since there was nothing he could say to change the situation, Wei Ying just went with it, using the walk there to try and get a better grip on his mental state. Plus, Wei Wuxian wiggled a bit, Lan Zhan was very strong, and he was feeling quite safe in his arms. If he dozed off here listening to the song of Lan Zhan’s heart, well, no one but Lan Zhan and him would know.

Chapter Text
He was jostled awake as Lan Zhan ascended some stairs to what Wei Ying assumed was the second floor of yet another inn.
"Sorry." he mumbled, staggering slightly when Lan Zhan set him down.
“Tired?"
"Stressed, people keep giving me issues. It's like nothing’s changed." Wei Wuxian said wistfully. Lan Zhan snuck an arm around his waist to keep him upright, purposely ignoring his pointed statement. They spent the better part of the next hour interrogating Wei Wuxian’s old friend, Nie Huaisang. All of Wei Wuxian’s instincts screamed at him that the man was lying or withholding something, but Wei Wuxian had no proof and shoved the feeling to the side. After the Nie sect Leader had fled the room Wei Wuxian could feel eyes on him.
"What Lan Zhan?"
"Mask?"
"Well since you seem so certain." Grimly Wei Wuxian removed his mask and Lan Zhan got to see the face he’d waited thirteen years to see again.
• • •
Wei Wuxian offered a tired grin.
"Happy?"
"Yes." Breathed Lan Zhan. Wei Wuxian was startled.
“Are you smiling? I missed that." He winced and Lan Zhan reached out to steady him.
"I felt an evil aura earlier, a curse?" Absently Wei Ying nodded, trying to keep the pain at bay.
"Just a simple trace of evil spell. My companion has the skills to deal with it when it comes collecting."
"Will cleanse it for you." a hand grabbed his foot, causing Wei Ying's heart to skip a beat as he skittered backwards from the table.
"Lan Zhan!" he berated.
"My apologies, I'd.... I'd forgotten. I'm coming over to you now." Lan Zhan sounded truly sorry as he made more noise than normal to cross the small span of space.
"You can see my face Lan Zhan, how can you forget?"
"Wei Ying is Wei Ying to me regardless of his looks." Wei Ying felt a hand hover near his cheek. Subconsciously he leaned towards it.
• • •
A thumb dusted over the scared skin.
"Does it still hurt?"
"The skin? No. I'm told my eyes will always hurt as they're unable to scab over." Wei Ying admitted. Unbeknownst to him, Lan Zhan looked heartbroken.
"I'll look at the curse now.” The hand was removed, and Wei Ying kicked himself for mourning its loss. His lower robe was moved aside revealing his bare leg. A tiny intake of breath alerted him.
"That bad?"
"Mm." Gingerly he felt his way up his own leg, pushing aside more of his robe to do so. Lan Zhan swallowed and tried to look elsewhere.
"It comes halfway up my thigh, I think. Lan Zhan, am I right?" Steeling himself Lan Zhan looked and quickly turned away again.
"Mm." Wei Ying giggled. Slowly reaching forward he tried to locate Lan Zhan’s face.
"Lan Zhan how are you going to help me if you won’t look at me?"
• • •
Just as Lan Zhan was gathering his courage again his Quaken pouch flew across the room, shattering the tea dishes.
"What is that?" Wei Ying could feel the energy coming from it, "Wait is that the hand?"
“Mm.”
"Why is it upset?"
"Your leg. Probably the power from the curse has awoken it again. We need to play the Requiescat."
"Is that what you used before?"
"Mm."
"I don’t have my flute." Lan Zhan pressed a long object into Wei Ying’s hand. His fingers danced lightly along the bamboo.
"This is mine? From the mountain?"
"Mmm."
"Oh Lan Zhan..." Wei Ying breathed. It wasn’t a good flute by any means, but the fact Lan Zhan had collected it for him meant the world to Wei Ying. Hesitant at first Wei Ying struggled to get his fingers into place by feel alone. He could also tell it had been altered slightly since the last time he’d held it.
• • •
The sound wasn’t phenomenal by any means of the imagination but compared to before it was heaven. Yet its new tone was ignored until Lan Zhan joined him with Wangji and the harmonious melody soothed the upset limb. Slumping, Wei Ying dropped his flute into his lap.
"Have you been carrying that the whole time?!"
"Mm." Lan Zhan moved to collect the pouch. "It has been subdued by Gusu's playing until now!”
“Jin Ling picked this curse up from the bunker. There must be something there in relation to your Hand! Lan Zhan!" Wei Ying flailed as his leg was grabbed again.
"Cleansing."
"Yes yes cleanse away." Wei Ying pouted but couldn’t help but let out a relieved sigh when he felt Lan Zhan’s power gently surge through his system.
"Warm." he commented with a silly grin. Lan Zhan smirked at his comment "We'll have to return to the bunker."
"Mm.'' Neither one commented on the 'we' part.
• • •
They regrouped with Sizhui and Wen Ning, Wei Ying giving up hiding the man’s identity. He trusted Lan Zhan would not take away his only defense, plus Sizhui seemed to like the famed Ghost General, something that caused both Wei Wuxian and Wen Ning significant heart ache. They acquired two rooms, one of which Lan Zhan insisted on sharing with Wei Ying in case his curse played up. Sizhui looked suspicious but Wei Ying was none the wiser, happily trailing after the man’s energy signature, twirling his flute. The next morning Wei Ying followed Lan Zhan back to the bunker where poor Nie Huaisang was having the previous damage repaired. Wei Ying found himself fascinated by his old friend’s energy as it fluctuated with his moods; particularly when they began searching coffins and pointed out the blade belonging to his older brother wasn't here. When they parted ways, Wei Wuxian made sure he apologised for the trouble they'd caused.
• • •
As they entered Qinghe and set about joining up with their companions, Lan Zhan inquired about the curse mark.
Cheekily, Wei Ying replied. "You’re welcome to strip me to find out." He heard Lan Zhan’s huff plain as day and giggled at the man.
"It feels smaller and lighter, Lan Zhan." absently he rubbed the final mark of his other curse. Lan Zhan was aware of the gesture but said nothing. They met up with Sizhui and Wen Ning and settled at a tavern to plan their next step. Wei Ying grew nostalgic at the inn’s name. He told Sizhui all about the last time they visited the Qiting Tavern until Lan Zhan seemingly lost his emotional control, downing Wei Ying’s cup of alcohol after some other patrons brought up some past events blamed on Wei Ying. With Lan Zhan’s head indented into the table they had no choice but to retire for the day. Wei Wuxian seemingly forgot about them separating as Sizhui and Wen Ning helped him bring Lan Zhan up to their room. They left when Wei Wuxian said he could handle getting him into bed.
• • •
Wei Ying gently settled Lan Zhan down under the covers on the bed, placing him on his back, hands resting on his sternum. He pulled the blankets up and lightly placed his hand on Lan Zhan’s cheek.
"I really miss the old days. Studying at Cloud Recesses; swimming at Lotus Pier with Jiang Cheng. I miss being able to see, I wonder what expressions you’ve had on your face these last two days. Despite all I've lost though, I still can't regret saving the innocent." A hand covered his, preventing him from pulling away. Wei Ying could feel Lan Zhan’s golden gaze upon his cloth covered eyes; skin tingling with awareness.
“I regret not being there with you from start to finish."
"Lan Zhan... I did all those..."
"I should have gone with you the night you rescued them. If I had, things would have gone differently." Wei Ying sat a finger on his lips, causing Lan Zhan to go cross-eyed looking at it.
"Hush Lan Zhan. You never had any part in what happened. It was all my decision from the beginning until the end."
• • •
Lan Zhan sat up and pulled Wei Ying onto the bed and into a hug, Wei Ying’s head resting under his chin.
"Lan Zhan?" A hand started carding through his hair.
"I should have been there Wei Ying. I regret not being there. We made an oath to do what’s right and you only ever did that." Wei Ying relaxed into Lan Zhan's hold, eyes closing as his words washed over him.
“I wish you had too." Wei Ying whispered. He moved to get up after some time had passed but Lan Zhan refused to relinquish his hold.
“Umm Lan Zhan?"
"Stay." A sleepy murmur. Wei Ying giggled.
“With you? In the same bed? Lan Zhan how shameless!"
"Mm." Wei Ying considered his options and relented. He was in no way capable of arguing with Lan Zhan.
"Slide over." Lan Zhan obliged and tugged Wei Ying into the bed with him.
"I had no idea we were close enough to share a bed."
"Again, I have my regrets.”
• • •
Wei Ying didn’t know how to appease the man, so instead he let Lan Zhan cuddle him and run fingers through his hair. If he was honest with himself Wei Ying was also enjoying the physical contact, having not had any since his Senior sister had passed. Unbidden, the image of her blood soaked form came to mind and unconsciously he curled tighter into Lan Zhan’s embrace. Maybe just this once he would take advantage of a drunken Lan Zhan to enjoy a small measure of comfort. They fell asleep that way until Wei Ying woke from a nightmare. With some difficulty he extracted himself from the warmth of Lan Zhan, his hair was knot free and he wondered how long Lan Zhan had finger combed it last night. Slipping past Sizhui and Wen Ning’s room Wei Wuxian made his way outside, with a dumpling in hand, and perched himself on the front steps. Munching away he listened to some local children playing Sunshot Campaign. He couldn't help but laugh when they ran away from the Yiling Patriarch, an older lady with a broom.

Chapter Text
Still smiling, Wei Ying stood, turned, and greeted the large ball of spiritual energy known as Lan Zhan.
"Lan Zhan! Sleep well?" The energy pulsed.
"Where did you sleep last night? Your bed was untouched." Wei Ying felt a bit downcast at that, he'd hoped Lan Zhan would have remembered their conversation. Lan Zhan must have noticed his change of expression.
“What did I do?" There was a tiny hint of panic in his voice, so Wei Ying took pity on the man.
"Relax Lan Zhan. We had a nice chat then slept together." Hmm in hindsight Wei Ying probably should have phrased that better given Lan Zhan’s energy was now pulsating at intervals. A hand brushed his arm before it was retracted.
"Did I hurt you?"
"Lan Zhan? Not that kind of sleeping!?" Wei Ying sputtered; positive his face was bright red by this point. Lan Zhan himself was sporting red ears.
• • •
At this point Wen Ning and Sizhui emerged from the building; Wen Ning immediately moving to Wei Wuxian’s side. Looking between Hanguang Jun and Senior Wei, Sizhui couldn’t help but ask.
"Is everything alright?" Wei Ying mentally slapped the images out of his head before reaching for Sizhui; a coarse fabric meeting his touch.
"We're fine. You didn’t change your clothes?" Sizhui looked down, a bit surprised himself.
"Oh... I guess I'm already comfortable wearing them." he offered with a small smile.
"Well it does suit you, but you’re back with your Senior now, you should dress appropriately." Wei Ying half-heartedly scolded.
“Fine.” Was Lan Zhan’s response. Wei Ying tilted his head in his direction, finding himself irrationally pleased Lan Zhan was content with his choice of Sizhui’s clothing.
"I couldn’t redo the braids though Senior Wei." Wei Wuxian had braided his hair after a comment from Wen Ning about how easily it knotted. Sizhui had grown quite fond of them.
• • •
With a put-upon sigh that was completely false, Wei Ying moved over to an outside table. He sent Wen Ning back inside to get them some food before gesturing for Sizhui to come sit in front of him. Gently he began combing the knots out.
"Lan Zhan, come memorise how to do this so you can do them for Sizhui in the future.” Obediently the silent man came closer. Smiling to himself Wei Ying went through the motions of teaching Lan Zhan how to braid his son’s hair. When one side was complete, he moved and pushed Lan Zhan into his spot.
"You do this side and I'll check it after." Throughout it all Sizhui remained patiently still, only moving to grab a dumpling off the plateful Wen Ning returned with. Wei Ying also grabbed one and, munching on it, he decided he wanted to see what Lan Zhan and Sizhui looked like together.
“A-Ning, may I?" he held out a hand. Wen Ning immediately moved closer and grasped his hand.
• • •
Lan Zhan felt the urge to separate their hands but his were currently full of his son’s hair. Studiously he set about finishing so he could interrupt their touching, except they broke apart on their own; Wen Ning steadying Wei Ying before moving aside.
"Wei Ying?" even alarmed Lan Zhan remembered to keep his voice down in public.
"He's fine, Hanguang Jun" Sizhui reassured him and moments later Wei Ying did as well; turning his head to face Lan Zhan directly he gave the man his best smile, all soft and tender. Lan Zhan was effectively silenced. Wei Ying could feel his eyes burning, a sure sign he was crying.
"You two look amazing together." he told them earnestly. Sizhui blushed at the praise. The moment was ruined by Lan Zhan’s Quakun Pouch vibrating in his robes. Tying off the braids he pulled it out, the pouch immediately tried moving in one direction.
• • •
"What’s it upset about now?" Wei Ying asked; he could feel its energy going crazy.
"It is directing us East of Shu." Wei Ying raised an eyebrow at the use of ‘us’.
"Are we going to travel together Lan Zhan? I was under the impression we were parting ways today." Lan Zhan stared directly into the black that had become Wei Ying’s eyes.
"I have no desire to part from you." Sizhui choked on his mouthful of dumpling, he'd never heard Hanguang Jun be so bold before.
"Lan Zhan, Lan Zhan, we're in public!" Wei Ying sounded timid and shy and unsure all in one nervous bundle. Sizhui decided a retreat was in order and got up to drag Wen Ning away.
"We'll wait at the gate." he called. Wei Ying waited until he couldn't sense them anymore before reaching out and grabbing Lan Zhan’s hand firmly. "Lan Zhan, you really can’t say such things! Please explain yourself properly."
• • •
Lan Zhan would swear Wei Ying was staring directly into his soul even whilst blind.
"You understand Lan Zhan, I won’t become a prisoner no matter what the cage looks like."
"Not a prisoner!" Lan Zhan was quick to reassure him, “You don't like travelling with me?"
“Lan Zhan that’s not fair, you know I adore you." Wei Ying admitted freely causing Lan Zhan's blush to intensify.
"Ridiculous!"
"What exactly do you want Lan Zhan?" Wei Wuxian requested his answer seriously.
“To travel and investigate this occurrence with you." Lan Zhan stated dearly.
"A-Ning goes where I go unless he wants to do otherwise."
“Of course." Lan Zhan had no intention of losing Wei Ying this time.
"Very well, let’s get going then."
"That... is what you want?" Lan Zhan had to make sure.
• • •
"I will admit that I am curious about this arm of yours. Plus it attacked at the same time I was brought back so it's probably all connected." Lan Zhan had also considered this.
"Sizhui and A-Ning are waiting, Lan Zhan, we should get going."
As a group of four now they travelled East until they reached a path looking overgrown and unused. Wei Ying worked his charm on the locals and learned the path led to Coffin Town and, except for deliveries, no one ever left the town. They'd barely gone a few metres up the path when a thick fog seemed to surround them. Instinctively they shifted closer together.
"Be careful." Lan Zhan stated. When they reached the gates Wen Ning easily shoved them aside to allow entrance. Wei Ying startled himself by stepping on what felt like a paper head. Sizhui was sticking close to Wei Ying, he could barely see in all the fog, so he wasn’t sure how Senior Wei was coping.
• • •
A figure in white rushed past them and they gave chase; Lan Zhan and Wei Ying splitting as the Figure appeared elsewhere. Sizhui stuck to Wei Ying and Wen Ning vanished into the fog under a command from Wei Wuxian. Not long after Wei Wuxian and Sizhui encountered a mixed group of Disciples; Jin Ling among them.
"It's you again." Jin Ling spouted; beside him Jingyi was pulling Sizhui in for a hug.
"Sizhui! You’re alright and what are you wearing!?" Sizhui laughed despite the circumstances.
"I've been following Senior Mo around. He's so clever! And he bought them for me, much more practical than white for travelling."
"So he did kidnap you!" A random junior accused. Sizhui would swear he heard an 'I told you so’ in the background as Wei Wuxian moved away from the juniors; trying to locate Lan Zhan in the fog. He could sense the two fighters going at it.

Removing his gaze from Senior Wei, Sizhui sternly faced his other juniors.
"Senior Mo is a very nice man and he did not force me to go anywhere." He thought for a moment, "Except Gusu, he was rather insistent I return home to Cloud Recesses." Seeing his friend slightly upset at the judgmental views of the other juniors Jingyi changed the topic.
"Is that Bichen I see? Did you meet up with Hanguang Jun?" All the Lan juniors looked excited at the prospect of their senior being near.
"Why are you here?" Jin Ling directed at Wei Wuxian, shifting the conversation again. Wei Wuxian moved closer and refocused his attention.
"How about you tell me why you’re here first, night hunting together?" Jingyi and Jin Ling exchanged looks before explaining how they'd grouped together to avoid getting lost and about the small figure they’d seen moving around. Then the duo descended into bickering about Jin Ling naming his dog Fairy.
• • •
Wei Wuxian was delighted to hear Lil Apple was safe and that it had lived up to his namesake. Abruptly, Jin Ling and Lan Jingyi's argument came to a close when neither they nor the other disciples could utter a word, lips sealed tightly shut.
"Our silencing spell." Sizhui murmured, gaze wandering to where he could hear Hanguang Jun’s sword clashing with another. The young men in front of them abruptly changed stances, Sizhui almost went to reassure them until he realised they were pointing behind Senior Wei. A group of corpses were advancing upon them. Wei Wuxian was already in motion; having sensed them as they drew closer. Using just resentful energy he commanded they stop and was ignored. Perplexed he tried again. Sighing, Wei Wuxian wondered if he'd get away with using his flute here with the juniors present, or would he be stabbed in the back? Shaking those thoughts away, Wei Wuxian reached for his flute.

Wei Wuxian paused, sensing Lan Zhan’s arrival. He made quick work of the corpses even as the juniors surged forward to surround Wei Wuxian again, stopping him from rushing in blind. Wei Wuxian simply patted the nearest one on the head, smiling. Judging by Jin Ling’s embarrassed sputtering, he was on the receiving end and Wei Wuxian would swear his energy seemed almost pleased. Lan Zhan appeared at his side and they spoke briefly before parting ways. All joking aside, Wei Wuxian turned back to the juniors and they stiffened under his serious demeanour.
"Some of you seem off and you’re coughing. Why?"
"The corpses released some dust they inhaled." The junior in red provided helpfully. Wei Wuxian had Sizhui check their tongues for discolouration and then happily proclaimed them poisoned. Outrage followed but he simply told them to treat it as life experience and move on. They would be able to brag about it later in life.
• • •
Needless to say, the juniors were not impressed with Wei Wuxian's cooking.
"I swear you’re all a bunch of children, well, younger children." He complained as they gagged on the congee he'd made. "Sizhui, it's not that bad is it?"
Sizhui hesitated briefly, "It's.... spicy, very spicy Senior Mo." Wei Wuxian scowled, thinking to himself that he only put the milder spices in. He wondered at his nephew’s quietness, the boy only briefly complaining whilst they were in the kitchen. His energy seemed fine, so he wasn’t unwell. A grin settled on his face as they continued to complain as they were forced to keep eating the spicy congee. Everyone was on their feet moments later, swords half drawn. Moving over to the wall, Wei Wuxian expanded his senses outwards toward the tapping noise they could all hear. The kids all shuffled closer behind him. Wei Wuxian smirked.
"Wow, amazing!" They moved closer again, curiosity winning out over fear.
• • •
It was Jin Ling who took the final plunge first, unceremoniously shoving Wei Wuxian aside so he could peer through a gap in the wall. Wei Wuxian squished down the proud feeling welling up, he did not deserve that, although perhaps after growing up with Jiang Cheng the boy needed someone to be proud of him. A hand was in his face and Wei Wuxian struggled not to laugh at Jin Ling’s outrage. One by one the disciples moved forward to take his place or make new holes to look through, coaxed by Wei Wuxian’s easy going manner. They shared their observations and Wei Wuxian was quick to offer them praise. It was tiring to maintain his senses, but Wei Wuxian’s diligence was paid off when he noticed the person before the juniors did. He felt a smug sense of satisfaction that his prior training with A-Ning and Sizhui had paid off. Thinking quickly, he re-animated two puppets and charged out the door to the dismay of the kids.
• • •
The second Wei Wuxian laid a hand on the person he wanted to retract it. He was a curiously volatile mix of resentful and normal energy, though on closer inspection Wei Wuxian could tell the good vibes he was getting were coming from the sword he carried. This only served to make him even more suspicious. Still, he'd come all the way out here and worried his young friends, so he supposed he should probably save the man. Now, for Wei Wuxian time had passed slowly as he followed his chain of thought, but for the juniors he'd only just stepped out before he returned, bursting through the door with the man leaning heavily on him. Wei Wuxian plopped him down against the wall and stepped back.
"Get him some congee" Tone brisk and businesslike, the juniors straightened, and one hurried off to comply. Sizhui, Jingyi and Jin Ling shuffled closer, hovering protectively behind Wei Wuxian as he crouched down. He reached for the bright energy attached to the man’s back only to have his hand slapped away.
• • •
It wasn’t a strong slap, but it was still a tell of the persons alertness level.
"Not the ordinary kind of cultivator, are you?" he mused out loud. The kids were tense as he spoon fed some congee to the ailed man. Wei Wuxian took a certain amount of pleasure from feeling that person’s energy flutter and spike with each mouthful he forced on them. Such a malicious power rolled in this man’s body, a stark contrast to the weapon he carried.
“Isn’t that Xiao Xingchen’s sword?" A disciple whispered. Wei Wuxian's heart clenched; he knew the person in front of him was not his uncle; the sword perhaps, but not the man. Wordlessly he rose and stepped back, the juniors moving in sync with him. For those that could see, they watched the tense lines around the injured man’s mouth grow tenser. Outside, many footsteps drew their attention and to the alarm of the juniors, a hundred odd puppets were moving down the path.
• • •
Standing, Wei Wuxian reached for Sizhui’s sword and slid his fingers along it. The well-kept blade sliced easily through his skin. His charges cried out in protest and offered their own instead. Wei Wuxian scolded their assumptions and asked for a Talisman; blank or used. One promptly appeared over his shoulder, courtesy of Jin Ling. With practised ease he overwrote the previous talisman and sent it flying at the door. Immediately the sounds died down as the room was sealed. Wei Wuxian was about to turn his attention back to the imposter when he heard the roof creak and ordered the kids to move back. The roof gave in and down dropped a black robed figure. Wei Wuxian couldn’t place the energy signature but the distress it showed was painful to feel. It also felt dangerous and Wei Wuxian cautioned everyone to be careful. Jin Ling intercepted a blow coming for him and Wei Wuxian used the opportunity to move out of the fray and pull out his flute. Moments later the figure was restrained and Sizhui was pulling out a nail in his head.
• • •
Sizhui’s discovery burdened Wei Wuxian's heart and confirmed what he already felt. The imposter was a killer, which suited his dangerous energy. A click of his finger had Song Lan moving once again; the living dead easily breaking the bonds that held him. In one swift movement his blade rested mere millimetres from Wei Wuxian’s throat. Around him the juniors bristled with fury. Knowing now who they faced, Wei Wuxian sent them out, afraid for their lives. Song Lan followed them, and that fear intensified.
“You would stoop so low as to hold children hostage." A wicked grin came with the reply.
"Of course! You know me. I have no shame." Wei Wuxian cocked his head to the side.
"I know you? I'm afraid that probably isn’t true." A scoff answered him. He heard the man move and then he could sense a soul before him. Instinctively he reached for it; knowing there was nothing he could do but wanting to offer some comfort nonetheless.
• • •
It was snatched away before he could make contact.
"That poor soul; to be splintered in such a way… There is no hope for it. Did you do this?" The mixture of outrage and confusion bubbled beneath Wei Wuxian’s skin. Just what did this person want?
"Who are you?" he demanded. A chuckle sounded and the familiarity struck Wei Wuxian down to his soul.
"You know me Master Wei, I’m your beloved disciple Xue Yang. As for this soul, I want you to fix him for me." Seeing no reason to deny it Wei Wuxian did not refute his name, however he did have something to say about the rest.
"I'm quite certain I never took on any disciples and I most definitely would not have considered you a suitable candidate. The soul... his soul, it cannot be fixed and should be allowed to rest. Must you torment it further?"
• • •
"Lies!" Xue Yang’s energy spiked; anger and, was that desperation, colouring his mood. Wei Wuxian tensed, readying himself for an attack when the wall beside them exploded inwards. Wen Ning was pummelling Song Lan, the more experienced fierce corpse holding his own against the Master swordsman.
"A-Ning take it outside please." The two humans followed the fight and Xue Yang displayed his true nature. Wei Wuxian defended himself admirably against the delinquent. He was pleased with his reactions in his first real fight since losing his sight. Luckily, when he was starting to tire Lan Zhan showed up to engage the juvenile. Satisfied Lan Zhan was more than capable of handling this fight, Wei Wuxian moved off to find something else to do. Wen Ning and Song Lan were still battling away with each other, a situation that currently did not need Wei Wuxian's involvement. Off to the side he could sense the kids. Apparently, they were somewhat enjoying themselves.
• • •
Making his way over, Wei Wuxian was greeted with excited exclamations and a hug from Sizhui. Wei Wuxian felt warm at the happy glow of energy coming from the kids.
"Enjoying the view?" Some guilty shuffling occurred. "And are you learning anything?" he probed.
"That the Ghost General could have killed us had he really wanted to on the Mountain." Wei Wuxian held back a snicker at that random comment. Everyone jumped when the blind girl popped up and nervously followed behind Wei Wuxian when he insisted they follow her. Only Sizhui was allowed close to the coffin she led them too, and the description of the corpse caused Wei Wuxian to grasp the coffin for support. He was once again crowded by juniors, but he brushed them aside, though not unkindly, and moved out of the group.
"If she is blind and mute how are we to find out what happened?" Sizhui queried.
"Empathy." was the response.
• • •
Jin Ling’s protest was the loudest, and despite the brash words, Wei Wuxian could hear the concern loud and clear. The pride at Wei Wuxian's confidence in him was also clear, leaving Wei Wuxian with thoughts on words to have with Jiang Cheng about positive reinforcement. Empathy was definitely different when not done with Wen Ning. As Wei Wuxian cycled through all of the young maiden’s memories, he struggled to keep his mind calm; a deep ice cold rage was building in his bones. When he finally awoke to the concerned kids' cries there was only one thing on his mind.
"Xue Yang must die." For the juniors, who had just watched their Senior shake and tremble as though plagued by a great strain, this made no sense. But despite their concern and fear, Wei Wuxian’s demeanour had changed. Gone was the fun loving eccentric Senior Mo and in his place was a hardened fighter with a purpose to fulfil.

Chapter Text
Wei Ying went off in search of Lan Zhan, pulling out his flute to aid him when he came upon the battling duo. Barely a few notes in and Song Lan came crashing to the ground behind him; Wen Ning pressing him down. Immediately Wei Wuxian moved towards them.
"Secure him Wen Ning." It came as no surprise to Wei Wuxian when he located a second nail in the man’s head. Without it in place, Song Lan collapsed to his knees, the remorse clear as day on his face. Lan Zhan had robbed Xue Yang of Frostwork and the delinquent was not happy, anger present in every swing of his own blade. Wei Wuxian arrived just in time to catch the spirit pouch Lan Zhan freed from him. Xue Yang raged and skulked about in the mist, tossing taunts and insults at the pair. Wei Wuxian answered in kind, the ice in his heart leaving him clear headed and concise. Back and forth they bantered until Wen Ning had to step in to prevent Wei Wuxian from getting nailed in the face, literally.
• • •
It only escalated from there. Xue Yang’s position was continuously given away by Little blind until he finally struck her down, though in doing so he was left open to gain his own wound from Lan Zhan. Wei Wuxian hurried to the young girl’s side, but he could already feel her life essence fading. Xue Yang screamed in both pain and anger, charging straight at them and into another attack causing the loss of an arm. He kneeled; defeated but defiant. A new enemy appeared, face obscured by a mask, and for a few moments he matched Lan Zhan blow for blow before retreating to Xue Yang’s side. The Yin Metal in Xue Yang’s possession was reclaimed by the person in the ghost face mask. Wei Wuxian felt the energy being gathered and tossed a talisman right before Lan Zhan sent Bichen towards them. Together they forced him to leave Xue Yang behind. Song Lan got his revenge and justice, though Wei Wuxian knew it was a hollow victory for the man. Robbed of both his ability to speak and a dear friend, there was little in the world that could make up for that.
• • •
With Little Blind buried and Song Lan off to start his own journey again, Lan Zhan and Wei Ying turned their attention to the real reason they were there. They followed their pouch to a coffin laden with suppressive Talismans. Wei Ying shoved the lid off and the dull pounding of resentful energy began behind his sightless eyes. The coffin itself was empty, but the pouch in Lan Zhan’s hand seemed to glow with enthusiasm. Gathering some energy, he sent the coffin gliding backwards, beneath another coffin covered with a suppressing circle drawn on its lid. A cold sweat breaking on his brow, Wei Wuxian broke the seal, allowing Lan Zhan to slice the lid open. Wei Wuxian's stance wavered as the resentful energy contained with the seal burst out, thankfully Lan Zhan's hand on his arm kept him standing. Lan Zhan sealed their latest acquisition into another pouch and quickly escorted Wei Wuxian out of the area, the woozy man wobbling on his feet.
• • •
He regained some strength by the time they reached the town of Tanzhou, where they had sent the kids and Wen Ning off to earlier. Walking on his own but staying close to Lan Zhan’s side, Wei Wuxian allowed himself to be guided by keeping a hand in the crook of his elbow. He coaxed Lan Zhan into describing the surrounding stalls, curious about what was being sold. Eventually he persuaded the man to purchase a lantern decorated with a pair of rabbits, apparently similar to the one they'd made all those years ago. Wei Wuxian had yet to smile again and Lan Zhan felt his face had lost a lot of colour, so he was eager to please him in some way. Wei Wuxian couldn’t help but be a little happier. He faltered when he heard a vendor sing out about paper butterflies, his mind taking him back to a time when Wen Yuan was running amuck in Yiling wanting one. Lan Zhan calling his name softly brought him back to the present and he quickly plastered on a small smile.
• • •
"I'm alright, Lan Zhan, just dwelling in the past. Now, I believe the kids are waiting for us." And it was true, ahead was Sizhui and the rest of the teens standing almost in formation. Lan Zhan and Wei Wuxian walked up to them quickly and were greeted formally.
"What’s wrong?"
"Zewu Jun is here.” Sizhui replied respectfully, though he was carefully checking Senior Wei over with his eyes. To him the kind senior seemed tired. Before he could inquire he was handed the lantern his Father was carrying and the duo walked inside. With a sigh, he directed everyone to enter the inn and get something to eat.
When Lan Zhan released the sword spirit for his brother to see Wei Wuxian could feel the agony Zewu Jun was feeling, see it clearly in his energy and he longed to provide some comfort to the man. Unfortunately, tough things often need to be said and discussed and this was definitely one of those things.
• • •
Wei Wuxian said his piece and was saddened when Zewu Jun continued to defend his sworn brother. But he understood loyalty far better than most. Zewu Jun would investigate, his honour and family name demanded it, not to mention the love he held for his blood brother. He simply needed time to process and conclude his own thoughts. Wei Wuxian, on the other hand, was seriously considering curling up in the corner of the courtyard for a nap. Thus this was of course when the juniors chose to cause a ruckus. Insults from Jin Ling about Wei Wuxian struck the man in question hard, though his expression didn't alter in the slightest. Lan Zhan slipped free of Wei Ying’s grip to head inside, his eyes cold and his spirit icy. With his human crutch gone Wei Wuxian tilted until a firm hard grasped his elbow.
"Master Wei?" The gentle soothing voice of Lan Xichen was ringing in his ear. His energy was curious, hopeful, and dismayed all at once.
• • •
Wei Wuxian hesitated in answering; depending on which way he answered Zewu Jun would confirm who he was. Still, this was Lan Zhan's brother and Wei Wuxian couldn’t bring himself to lie to the man. He startled when spiritually laced fingers rested on his temple. Huh... since when was he sitting on the ground?
"Master Wei?" Zewu Jun tried again, concern evident. Wei Wuxian reached up to rest a hand on his wrist.
"My apologies, sect Leader Lan, I hadn't realised I was so low on energy." He contemplated how to stand when he was guided to his feet. Formally he greeted Zewu Jun.
"And of course, I confirm your assumptions." An intake of breath.
"Then your eyes?"
"Well and truly gone I'm afraid. But, as I informed your nephew, I will adapt. I didn't kidnap him by the way! He grabbed me!"
• • •
Lan Xichen chuckled at the panic that found its way into Wei Wuxian’s voice. Finding some measure of comfort in the familiar antics of the boy he once knew.
"I never thought anything to the contrary. I can assure you of that, Master Wei." Wei Wuxian was almost sure he was being laughed at.
"But in all honesty, Zewu Jun, it can't be a coincidence that all this happened at the same time I was summoned. I ask only that you think on it." Wei Wuxian steeled himself and offered another salute before heading inside after Lan Zhan. He paused on the threshold of the main eating area and enquired from a serving girl about which room Hanguang Jun had booked before heading upstairs. He simply didn’t have the energy to deal with anyone right at that moment. Wen Ning found him meditating a few minutes later and positioned himself near the door to ward of any curious juniors. The last few days had been long and his Master needed to rest.
• • •
Lan Sizhui found himself in a predicament; stuck between upholding the rules of his clan, defending a cherished Senior, or simply walking away, all the while feeling guilty for upsetting Jin Ling. Since having met Senior Wei, Sizhui struggled to reconcile the humorous fun loving man with the villain of the Elders’ horror stories. Thankfully, the choice was removed by Hanguang Jun entering the area, a cold blank look on his face as he surveyed them all. Every Lan disciple in the room knew they had disappointed the man and felt shame. Jin Ling felt no such thing, uncaring of the man’s opinion, but Lan Sizhui? The boy looked so sad that Jin Ling couldn’t stop the spike of guilt in his heart. They all watched but said nothing as Hanguang Jun purchased and carried alcohol upstairs, along with various dishes of some rather red looking foods; similar to how Hanguang Jun was ignoring the chicken wings on Jingyi’s plate.

Chapter Text
Wen Ning and Hanguang Jun stared at each other. Wen Ning looked away. So far, they hadn't really had any reason to interact with each other directly. Each knew the other held importance to Wei Wuxian, and each lacked the ability to communicate well.
"Master Wei is meditating." Wen Ning offered quietly, shuffling to the side to allow him past. Hanguang Jun inclined his head, gracefully stepping into the room whilst balancing the serving tray. Wen Ning paused but gave in again.
"I…I’ll take my leave then."
"Wen Ning." Wen Ning froze, "My condolences on you family, and my apologies for not doing more." Wen Ning fled. Movement had Lan Zhan turning around to face the slumped form of Wei Ying.
"Wei Ying!" he rushed to put the food down and kneel beside him.
"I’m fine Lan Zhan."
"Not fine." Lan Zhan argued, heaving Wei Ying to his feet.
• • •
"Can you eat?" Lan Zhan’s voice was awfully close to his ear. Wei Ying flushed.
"I'm not disabled Lan Zhan...” Irony, “Lead me to the food?" He pouted and, though tired, there was no way he could resist the tantalising smells coming from the table. Once deposited, Wei Ying dug into the food carefully. He wasn’t the most graceful eater anymore and currently his hands would not stop shaking. A quarter of the way through his appetite vanished and he felt that eating more would be a poor idea. Forgetting all about his current companion, Wei Ying stood and stumbled towards the bed. It would seem his body had other ideas, having had enough of being upright, and he didn’t even make it to his feet like he'd thought. Wei Ying’s feet crossed, or rather, didn't uncross, and the entire contents of the table would have been lost were in not for Lan Zhan’s reflexes. Wei Ying was completely unaware as he was safely tucked into bed by a concerned Lan Zhan.
• • •
Lightly brushing away the loose strands of hair framing Wei Ying’s face, Lan Zhan gazed at the mask shielding most of his features. It had been days since he'd seen the man without it. Sighing, he reached to undo the knot holding it in place. Setting it on the table beside the bed, he went to work on removing the blindfold as well. When he was finally able to gaze upon Wei Ying’s face, Lan Zhan found he was frowning at the discomfort he saw written there. Fetching a basin of water, Lan Zhan soaked a cloth square and settled it over Wei Ying’s eyes. Afterwards he perched on the bed beside him and started transferring over a steady trickle of energy. He paid no attention to time, falling into a light meditative state, the energy flow steady and calm. He felt Wei Ying wake before the man moved and halted the transference. Wei Ying reached up to feel the fabric on his face, aware the restrictive bindings usually around his head were gone. Lan Zhan moved his hand and resoaked the compress.
"Remain still, you collapsed."
• • •
Wei Ying let out an annoyed groan.
"This body is so weak." Wei Ying cursed himself for not regulating his energy better, it would take a day or so before he'd be able to sense his surroundings properly again. Lan Zhan’s hand hovered now with no task to complete. Wei Ying felt his hunger rise again.
"Did any food survive my plunge?" Immediately Lan Zhan moved to fetch some of the lighter dishes. Obediently Wei Ying ate what he was offered without complaint, propped against the bed headboard. This was how Lan Xichen found them moments later. A light knock announced his presence as he entered the room. Wei Ying startled but caught himself almost instantly.
"Brother." Lan Zhan greeted, and Wei Ying mentally thanked him for the much-needed hint.
"Zewu Jun." he greeted respectfully. Lan Xichen moved closer, concern evident.
"Master Wei, did you collapse again?"
"Again?" A stern query was etched into that one word. Wei Ying laughed nervously.
• • •
"I’ll have you know, I merely stumbled, and your brother was kind enough to aid me." Lan Xichen nodded at Lan Zhan's gratuitous expression. Wei Ying sensed they were exchanging silent words and felt his temper spike somewhat. He didn’t have this problem with Wen Ning and Sizhui.
"I am still in the room gentleman, and I haven't learnt the Lan Sect secret language of silence yet." Lan Xichen smiled gently but Lan Zhan looked as mortified as a Lan could.
"Wei Ying..."
"No. Whatever you two may be planning, if you think I'll just go along with it you are sadly mistaken. I am more than capable of teleporting away again." Lan Xichen could see his brother becoming upset with what was being discussed, or more the way it was being discussed.
"Master Wei, I was merely concerned for your lack of energy, it never seemed to be an issue before now."
"It has been a long few days." Came Wei Wuxian’s terse reply.
• • •
Lan Zhan returned a hand to Wei Wuxian and was inwardly relieved when he wasn’t shook off.
"Wei Ying.'' Wei Wuxian sighed.
"I understand you’re concerned, but I simply overdid it, that doesn’t mean I’ll allow myself confined. If you feel I’m a liability, I can certainly take A-Ning and leave. It was not my intention to interfere." For a few seconds Lan Xichen thought Wangji was going to pass out he went so white and he felt a stab of anger at Wei Wuxian. That anger faded somewhat when Wei Wuxian flinched away from him. Wangji shot him a look of disappointment, though he was sure he hadn't shown any outward sign of his emotional outburst. Realisation hit.
"You’re using your energy to see, so to speak. You could sense my energy just then." he marveled, “Very clever indeed Master Wei." Wei Wuxian inclined his head in a small manner.
"You as well Zewu Jun." He said respectfully.
"Is that why you’re tired?" Lan Zhan asked.
"I used a lot of energy during the fight with Xue Yang."
• • •
Wei Wuxian spoke defensively, almost crossing his arms to pout, and Lan Xichen felt a rush of affection for the young man; he couldn’t help the small huff of laughter than slipped out. Gazing at the scarred face of Wei Wuxian, Lan Xichen remembered why he'd come to speak with them in the first dace. However, his brother was speaking again.
"Wei Ying, accompany me to Jinlintai next month." Wei Wuxian visibly started, convinced as he was that they would be parting ways very shortly.
"Why?"
"We are still missing the head." It was Lan Xichen's turn to flinch. He sighed quietly.
"Please go with Wangji to Jinlintai. If you two can bring me proof I will of course act on the path of justice."
"So if we find the head there, it will confirm our suspicions and that will be enough for you to act?"
"Yes, Master Wei, and in the meantime perhaps you could spend some time resting in Gusu."
• • •
Lan Xichen was guilty of enjoying the surprise on both younger men’s faces.
"Your companion is of course welcome to come as well; the decision is completely yours." Still no reaction, perhaps he'd broken them? "I'm sure Wangji has no problems with this arrangement, do you Wangji?"
"None." Lan Zhan quickly confirmed, awaiting Wei Ying’s answer with bated breath. Wei Ying appeared lost in his thoughts, though in reality he was trying to guess if this was a trick or not.
"You will provide us with a jade token so we may come and go?"
"Of course.'' Lan Xichen agreed, "You would be a guest, though perhaps you should remain as Master Mo for the duration of your stay, for safeties sake." Wei Wuxian chuckled, and the room seemed brighter.
"You mean your Uncle's, wouldn’t want to give him a heart attack."
• • •
The trip to Gusu was both awkward and hilarious to Wei Wuxian. Awkward when he was standing on Bichen, arms wrapped around Lan Zhan's waist. Hilarious because most of the Lan juniors travelling with them were absolutely baffled whenever Wen Ning showed up each night at the camp site, regardless of how far they’d flown. Flying had been terrifyingly exhilarating. In the first few minutes Wei Ying had clung to Lan Zhan, blinder than he'd ever been. Everything had energy, the trees, the earth, the water, the people; but in the air there was nothing. Eventually though he adjusted, able to sense the others around him, despite his low energy, and that helped keep him grounded in the moment. Wei Wuxian also took some pleasure observing the interactions between Wen Ning and Lan Xichen. Lan Xichen seemed to have made it his personal mission to converse with the socially challenged Wen Ning, especially when he witnessed the quiet conversations between him and Sizhui. Their energy rose and fell with every interaction in a way that fascinated Wei Wuxian.
• • •
If Lan Xichen mentioned anything about Lan Sizhui’s change of robes, Wei Wuxian was not aware of it. That being said, Wei Wuxian encouraged him to change to his usual attire a day before they were due to arrive. Lan Sizhui found he was strangely insulted on Wei Wuxian’s behalf.
"Sizhui, your elders won’t be happy if you're not wearing the correct robes. It is somewhat disrespectful." Lan Sizhui wanted to pout, only years of education and training held the expression at bay. Wei Wuxian patted the boy’s head.
"I'm not saying you have to give them away, keep them for travelling." Sizhui nodded. Both were unaware of the melancholy look being directed at them, nor the sad gaze fixated on the younger sibling doing the staring. Lan Xichen could only hope this reunion would end better and last longer than the previous time spent together by the self-proclaimed soulmates. He may not agree with their accusations but seeing Wangji happy made Lan Xichen happy as well.
Chapter 11: Respite
Chapter Text
They arrived without fanfare and Lan Xichen promptly moved through the barrier to retrieve two tokens; after which they all trooped up the mountain. Wen Ning definitely felt the barrier, but the token Lan Xichen provided protected him from harm. The disciples split from them, returning to their rooms to rest. Wei Wuxian and Wen Ning received hugs from Sizhui much to Jingyi's astonishment. Lan Xichen assigned a private room for Wen Ning and Wei Wuxian close to Wangji’s room. He left not long after to check in with the elders and inform their uncle of their return. He would also inform every one of their guests for the next few weeks. Wen Ning took refuge in the room, uncomfortable with so many cultivators around. Wei Ying trailed after Lan Zhan, relying on his cane to guide him. Lan Zhan invited him into the Jingshi. Wei Ying remained somewhat subdued, overwhelmed by past memories from Cloud Recess: the happy moments with Jiang Cheng and Nie Huaisang, bothering Lan Zhan, and the many, many times he’d wrote out those rules.
• • •
Speaking of rules.
"Lan Zhan I've been gone a long time; how many rules are there now?"
"Four thousand." Wei Ying was glad he was already seated.
"FOUR THOUSAND?!" He gulped, how could he learn them so he didn't break them? Maybe Wen Ning could read some to him each day and he would simply remain away from people until it was time to leave or he'd learnt the new rules. A cup knocked into his hand. Taking it, Wei Ying moved to swallow it when the smell hit him and he grinned, delighted.
"Lan Zhan! Emperors Smile!" Delicately he smelled it again; breathing in deeply, before downing it in one go, “Lan Zhan, you keep wine here now? I didn't know you had it in you." Lan Zhan blushed but said nothing, quietly sipping his tea. Wei Ying frowned.
"Lan Zhan? Are you still there?"
• • •
"You know I am." Wei Ying sighed with relief. "I actually don't, I’m not using any energy right now." Lan Zhan paused.
"Why?"
"I don't need to. I'm safe here, with you."
"Shameless." Lan Zhan had never felt as flustered as he did right now. Wei Ying always did bring out his emotional side.
"Lan Zhan, do you really think we should go to Jinlintai? Perhaps for Zewu Jun’s sake we should leave the issue be?"
"My brother will not hide from the truth."
"No, but sometimes the truth only brings pain."
"Wei Ying... It is the right thing to do." Wei Ying stood abruptly, wine in hand.
"I did what I thought was the right thing once before Lan Zhan, you know how that worked out. It brought me nothing but pain; I simply wished to spare your brother what we went through." Lan Zhan watched helpless as Wei Ying tapped his way from the room, unable to articulate what needed to be said.
• • •
Wei Wuxian sulked at the base of a tree in the gardens until Wen Ning found him for mealtime. With his mood soured Wei Wuxian found himself not wanting to be around other people. They ate together in silence, Wen Ning unsure of what caused his master distress. Seeing Wei Wuxian staring blankly into space he stood and wandered around to stand behind him. Loosening the knots, he removed the mask and blindfold before retrieving a comb. The Wei Wuxian didn't seem to notice as he set to work detangling the man in question’s mane.
"Master Wei?" A loud sigh and Wen Ning had a chest full of Wei Wuxian.
“A-Ning, you seriously are the best thing in my life. I don’t know what I did to deserve you." Wen Ning smiled with exasperation; propping Wei Wuxian back up again so he could keep combing.
"You gave me friendship Master Wei, and my life."
"Do you regret it?" Wei Wuxian asked, his tone serious.
• • •
Wen Ning gave the question some consideration, something he'd never really done before. Wen Ning had always just gone along with whatever his sister did, following in her steps with unwavering loyalty. That had transferred to Wei Wuxian; the man had saved him from eternal death and had needed him. No one had ever needed Wen Ning before.
"No." he said resolutely.
"Are you sure? I never have asked you how you felt about everything going on; then and now. You don't have to stay you know. We'll always be friends, but you’re not my servant." Wen Ning shook his head ruefully.
"I am happy travelling with you. I would perhaps like to see us in fewer fights and away from so many people, but then I wouldn’t get to see things." Wei Wuxian reached over his head and poked Wen Ning.
"You’re so adorable A-Ning"
• • •
Removing his hand Wen Ning turned Wei Wuxian to face him, fingers carefully checking over the scabs.
"Are you going to tell me what upset you today? I thought you were with Hanguang Jun." His tone was soft, though Wei Wuxian doubted Wen Ning had any other tone.
"I just questioned what we were doing, investigating this mystery like we have any right to interfere. I didn't want to hurt Zewu Jun or Lan Zhan. Lan Zhan did not agree." A knock at the door interrupted their conversation.
"Master Mo may I come in?" Wei Wuxian suddenly felt panicked at facing Zewu Jun, had Lan Zhan complained about him? Before he could form a protest, Wen Ning had risen and allowed Zewu Jun into the room. Greetings were exchanged and then Wen Ning sat to redress Wei Wuxian’s eyes. Without using his energy Wei Wuxian was at a bit of a loss as to what Zewu Zun’s mood was.
"I need to apologise, and say thank you, Master Wei." Zewu Jun kept his voice low but he was no less sincere.
• • •
"Uhh." Wei Wuxian, serial charmer, was at a loss for words.
"Wangji came to speak with me, he mentioned your conversation."
"Tattletale." Wei Wuxian muttered childishly. Lan Xichen shot Wen Ning an amused glance only to have him shyly avert his eyes. Reaching across the table Lan Xichen grasped Wei Wuxian’s hand and felt the man tense.
"I'm glad he did and I'm happy to know I'm in your thoughts. But what Wangji told you was correct. I need to know what has happened to Mingjue and I need to make sure he is at rest. I can understand though if you wish to finish your involvement. I had completely forgotten you weren't really involved in the first place." Wei Wuxian sighed.
"Now we both know that isn't true. I won't abandon Lan Zhan or the investigation. I just... I just needed Lan Zhan to understand we may not like what we find."
• • •
Lan Xichen could appreciate that sentiment immensely. Protecting Wangji was his job as an older brother.
"You’re not mad at him then?"
"No!" Wei Wuxian pulled his hand free, almost getting poked in the eye by Wen Ning as he did so.
"Did he think I was?" Wei Wuxian released a sad huff, "It really sucks I can’t see his expression any more... No more conversations without using my energy!" he solemnly swore. Lan Xichen was surprised.
"You aren’t using your spiritual energy?" Wei Wuxian shook his head.
"No it’s still low right now. I had to use it on the way here, but I feel it’s safe here so it's best to conserve it. You did tell me to rest whilst here. Actually, I was going to ask Lan Zhan if I could meditate at your cold spring whilst we're staying here."
"Of course!" Lan Xichen turned his attention to Wei Wuxian’s masked companion.
• • •
"A-Ning, you of course don’t need to remain here. Our library is quite close, or, if you would prefer, I can bring some books to you if you tell me what subjects you like." Wei Wuxian was completely sure Lan Xichen was aware who ‘A-Ning' was and adored the older man for making an effort. Wen Ning stuttered out a thank you and a promise to think about it.
"That’s all I can ask. I'll take my leave, curfew is approaching." Wen Ning finished retying the blindfold around Wei Wuxian’s eyes, happy with the paste he'd applied to the scars, and rose to escort Zewu Jun out. Wei Wuxian sat lost in thought, feeling very old and tired suddenly. He’d barely been alive a few months and yet so much had happened. Blaming his low energy for his low mood Wei Wuxian decided to sleep and spend some time meditating tomorrow. Wen Ning returned and showed him to the bed before leaving him alone with his thoughts. Surprisingly, sleep came easy.
• • •
Lan Zhan carefully made his way down to the cold springs to try and meditate on a solution to his problem. He'd completed his morning tasks and spent some time teaching. Not once had he spied Wei Ying anywhere and he felt out of sort because of it. Stripping down to just his pants Lan Zhan stepped into the cold water, ignoring the familiar chill settling over his body. Breathing in a steady rhythm Lan Zhan expanded his senses out, a part of him wondering at how Wei Wuxian travelled whilst doing this. He searched his surroundings; taking the time to identify each bit of energy he found, it was incredibly taxing. Meanwhile Wei Ying carefully made his way towards where he hoped the springs were still accessible from; he could hear water, so that was a good sign. Moving slowly down the path Wei Wuxian stumbled a few times but kept going at a steady pace. The water was close, and he could feel the cold in the air warping around his body. An involuntary shiver made his teeth rattle. A startled movement brought realisation of another person in the area. Distracted, Wei Ying miss stepped and toppled into the spring.
• • •
The water was just as cold as he remembered, though since only his legs were submerged, he supposed it wasn’t all that bad.
"Wei Ying." Well at least he knew whose naked upper body he was clinging to.
"Wei Ying are you alright?" About to answer, Wei Ying paused his thought process when his fingers found a raised line on Lan Zhan’s back, and another, and then another. Still being held upright by Lan Zhan, Wei Ying leaned back a bit.
"Lan Zhan, what are these?" No reply. Planting his feet, Wei Ying stood on his own and Lan Zhan immediately stepped away. Wei Wuxian made a quick grab and located a bare shoulder. Gripping lightly, he pulled and turned the man around. Placing a hand on Lan Zhan’s back he splayed fingers across the tight trembling skin. With each blemish he counted, his own hands shook. Lan Zhan was struggling to control his breathing, Wei Wuxian’s fingers sending tingles through his skin with every touch.
"Lan Zhan, thirty three...” Wei Ying’s voice trembled, "Why do you have thirty three lash marks?"

Chapter 12: Bittersweet

Chapter Text
Lan Zhan moved out of Wei Ying’s reach. He gathered up his robe and slipped it on. Turning back, he saw Wei Ying standing where he'd left him.
"Wei Ying..." Lan Zhan did not want to discuss what had been such a hard time for him. Wei Ying jerked at his name.
“Lan Zhan, please answer me." He took an aborted step forward unsure how to handle this. "The truth Lan Zhan. Did I, did I do that?"
"No!" Lan Zhan was horrified Wei Ying would even consider himself capable of doing that. "You would never!" There was nothing but a strip of black fabric shielding Wei Wuxian’s face and Lan Zhan could plainly read his emotions in the features showing. Wei Ying was distressed and shaking.
"I can't remember a lot of what happened at the end, but I know you were there." Wei Ying's legs gave out and Lan Zhan hurried to hold him up again.
"I defended you against the elders."
"And they struck you for a verbal argument!”
"I struck thirty three elders to keep them from getting to you."
• • •
Wei Ying felt as though he himself had been the one struck. The man he considered a brother, had grown up and shared so many memories with, had walked away, but here was someone who had turned on their own family to defend him. What did you say to that? Lan Zhan's hand was on his cheek; a gentle reminder to stay in the here and now.
"Wei Ying?"
"I can’t remember!" The mental agony sounded through with each word from Wei Ying and it cut Lan Zhan deep. He searched for something, anything to dilute the pain Wei Ying was feeling; a distraction.
“Bad memory." A hysterical giggle fell from Wei Ying's lips.
"You truly are someone I didn't deserve Lan Zhan."
"Wei Ying deserves more."
"Lan Zhan! You are not allowed to say things like that!"
"No?" Wei Ying laughed into Lan Zhan’s chest before sobering.
"You're not mad at me?"
"Never mad. Wei Ying, why are you here?" Wei Ying stepped back.
"Oh I came to cultivate a bit. I did ask Zewu Jun.”
• • •
"Wei Ying is welcome here." Wei Ying blushed and then realised he was still being held by Lan Zhan; coughing he stepped back.
"I should, umm; I should try and do that. Lan Zhan is there anywhere to sit? I wasn’t actually planning on going into the water." he said ruefully. Lan Zhan had no idea where his boldness was coming from, but he carefully grabbed Wei Ying’s hand, pleased when the man didn't reject him, and guided him to the edge.
"There is a flat stone here." Plopping down Wei Ying assumed the Lotus pose and looked expectedly towards Lan Zhan. Lan Zhan remained standing but shifted nervously.
"Do you want to stay?" Wei Ying asked. Lan Zhan nodded.
“Yes” Wei Ying smiled.
"Play me something” he demanded childishly. Lan Zhan eagerly obliged, locating his own stone and settling on it with a gentle calming song; content to sit and play as long as Wei Wuxian allowed him to.
• • •
Lan Xichen came to fetch them for the midday meal, claiming the juniors wished to eat with Senior Mo. Upon seeing their damp robes, he insisted on them changing and lightly scolded Wangji for allowing a guest to get wet. Wei Wuxian protested Lan Zhan’s innocence, hanging off of Lan Xichen's arm to ascend up the path. Xichen could feel Wangji's eyes staring at where their arms made contact. Closing his eyes briefly Xichen halted their steps and pointedly offered Wei Wuxian’s hand to his brother.
"Wangji, can you escort Master Mo back to your room? I shall fetch him a change of robes and then you may change as well." The boldness returned and Lan Zhan was quick to seize Wei Ying's hand, tucking it safely into the crook of his elbow. Gently he tugged Wei Ying in the direction of the Jingshi, not giving the man time to protest. Wei Ying didn't miss a step, matching easily to Lan Zhan’s stride. Xichen smirked at their retreating backs.
• • •
"I'll be fine Lan Zhan, go get changed." Wei Ying was finding it absolutely adorable how caring Lan Xichen and Lan Zhan were being. His pride was taking a hit, but after using his spiritual energy moments before he could tell they weren't uncomfortable with their actions, happy even to do so. As such, he would allow them to coddle him per say. He could tell that Lan Xichen was still harbouring some resentful feelings but given what he'd found out earlier Wei Ying couldn’t begrudge the man his anger. His expression sobered somewhat, he still couldn’t comprehend Lan Zhan’s commitment to him, but he wasn't ungrateful, who knew meeting Lan Sizhui would bring all this about. A hand brushed his cheek and Wei Ying realised he'd missed Zewu Jun arriving. Standing, he accepted the robes and recognised the fabric as Gusu Lan robes. Black eyes focused on Lan Xichen. The man had the gall to project an innocent aura.
• • •
Who knew the disciples of Cloud Recess didn't gossip? Wei Ying barely held in a snicker as the dining room erupted into whispers. He supposed it wasn't often a man carrying a cane and wearing black mask walked in on the arm of Hanguang Jun. Strike that. It would never have happened before.
"Master Mo." Sizhui happily greeted, "I've missed you these last few days. I can’t get my braids right." Nearby juniors were straining to hear what was being said.
"Ahh Sizhui, you’re such a sweet talker, just like Lan Zhan. Come find me in the morning and I'll do them for you. You could also spend some time with A-Ning if you want. He's too shy to seek company on his own.”
"Of course. Jingyi wanted to meet him properly as well if he can?"
"Well you’d have to ask him about that. You know how he is."
• • •
Lan Zhan watched Wei Ying and Sizhui interact; something he'd done a lot these past few days. Now looking at them side by side he felt a wave of guilt rise up at the secret he was keeping. Wei Ying tugged on his arm.
"Where’s the food?" withholding a smile Lan Zhan settled Wei Ying behind a table and collected him his meal before joining his brother to give Wei Ying some space. The remaining two weeks passed peacefully for Wei Ying. With a lot of things out in the open he was able to converse fairly freely with Lan Zhan. He cultivated each day at the spring, listening to Lan Zhan’s songs being strummed out on Wangji. He poked at the juniors; coaxing smiles out of the even the blandest child. A-Ning followed Sizhui around like a shadow, and when he couldn’t he perched himself in the library, reading quietly to pass the time. The tokens were used frequently by Wei Wuxian and Wen Ning, the former finding that he couldn’t even last three days without needing to wander.
• • •
The sound of tapping, wooden cane bouncing along every surface, became common place for those living in Cloud Recess and those in Caiyi town. Lan Zhan slipped away to join him when he wasn’t teaching and simply trailed behind Wei Wuxian as he meandered about. Lan Xichen persisted in trying to befriend Wen Ning much to the Man’s embarrassment, even going so far as to join him in the library during his free time. Today was such a day.
"A-Ning, how are you today?" No matter how many times Lan Xichen greeted the shy man, he still flinched and moved as if wanting to flee. It always left Lan Xichen with a bad taste in his mouth. Wen Ning politely bowed.
"Well, Sect Leader Lan, thank you." Wen Ning struggled to find something to say in the silence but luckily Lan Xichen filled that role for him.
"How did you meet Master Mo? I've always been curious." Wen Ning gazed at Lan Xichen, for once looking him in the eye, trying to gauge what his intention was. Lan Xichen stared back, a little nervous but his expression honest.
• • •
"You know who Master Mo is?" Lan Xichen nodded "And me?"
"I have my assumptions." Wen Ning tensed again, and the fear now present in his demeanour was almost tangible.
"What... what are you planning on doing with us?" Someone being scared of him didn’t sit well with Lan Xichen and he was quick to reassure the man.
"Nothing! I promised you safe haven here and it shall remain as such, you have my word." Wen Ning nodded, he supposed no harm had come to them so far.
"So? How did you two become friends?" Lan Xichen spent the rest of his afternoon coaxing words from Wen Ning, happy to hear the history Wen Ning and Wei Wuxian shared. It wasn’t common knowledge and Lan Xichen liked hearing the timid man speak. Despite all that he knew of Wei Wuxian he still couldn't fathom what had made a young man, praised for his loyalty and skill, walk away from his family.
• • •
"Master once spoke of an oath he made with Hanguang Jun. To uphold what was good and right in the world and bring justice to those who commit wrongs. Master has unwavering loyalty and determination. It is no small feat to change his stance." Lan Xichen was taken aback by the change that had come over Wen Ning.
"And yet he strayed from that oath."
"Did he? You all saw a demonic cultivator, but I saw someone willing to risk it all if that’s what it took to do the right thing; someone who protected those of us who couldn't fight. My biggest regret is turning myself in with Sister, we abandoned Master and he was left to shoulder the world’s prejudiced judgement all alone."
"He was not without sin himself."
"Such as?" Lan Xichen was stumped, whilst at the time Wei Wuxian had been arrogant and mouthed off a lot, he was also kind, caring and very protective of his loved ones. And all that Lan Xichen knew of, he knew from others. Wen Ning rose and Lan Xichen hurried to follow. Wen Ning bowed.
“Forgive me sect Leader Lan, I spoke out of turn."
• • •
Watching Wen Ning flee the library without receiving an answer, Lan Xichen could only repeat Wen Ning’s questions in his head. The conversation wasn’t brought up again and Wen Ning continued to stick to Sizhui, and in turn Jingyi, leaving Lan Xichen to nut over his words in silence. Wen Ning never mentioned it to Wei Wuxian, despite him noticing Wen Ning was upset. The day they had to leave drew closer and the formal invitation arrived. Sizhui could be found in the guest rooms every morning; sitting patiently while Master Mo braided his hair. He continued to insist he simply couldn't do it as well as Master Mo. Occasionally Hanguang Jun would join them and to those on the outside looking in they matched the scene of a young family enjoying life. When the time to leave arrived Wei Wuxian was feeling refreshed and more than ready to head out into the world again. Parting with Cloud Recesses and her people was bittersweet for Wei Wuxian, his visit this time far more pleasant than the last.
Chapter 13: Panic
Chapter Text
They part ways with the juniors a day before they reached Jinlintai, said juniors heading off to handle a minor night hunt in a nearby village. The quartet passed over the border quietly and Wen Ning promptly made himself scarce. He would have willingly followed Wei Wuxian inside, but his master knew he would be uneasy inside those walls and had simply asked if he minded staying close by. Wen Ning would not deny him. Their arrival was announced as they reached the base of the grand steps leading up into the Golden City. But as they ascended Wei Wuxian could already hear the whispers starting up amongst the cultivators ahead and behind them. The locals had recognised him as Mo Xuanyu and knew his history. Usually thick skinned Wei Ying couldn’t deny he was probably making a scene just by the fact his left hand was currently resting on Lan Zhan's arm, right one loosely griping a cane. He could well imagine the scandalous thoughts running through their heads. Embarrassed for his companions, Wei Wuxian began to withdraw his hand.
• • •
Warmth settled over his hand and he was tugged closer by the restrained limb.
"I am here Wei Ying." Lan Zhan whispered, though he needn't have bothered; his actions alone sending a clear message to the gossipers.
"Lan Zhan! People will talk. This is not good for yours or Zewu Jun’s reputation!" Wei Ying tried to stress the importance of his words by futilely pulling at his hand again.
"Don’t care." Wei Ying couldn’t see it, but he could feel Lan Zhan's energy growing colder and imagined the expression on his face was doing the same. Forgetting his place, Wei Ying lightly cracked him on the shin with his cane.
"Stop glaring at the world Lan Zhan, I know you are so don’t deny it!" The whispers started up anew and Wei Ying was ready to start wailing when he realised what he'd done. Lan Zhan’s expression melted into fond exasperation at the man beside him. Lan Xichen could only smile gently as he walked ahead of them.
• • •
When Jiang Cheng sucked in a breath to speak Wei Wuxian readied himself for a conflict.
"Zewu Jun." Jiang Cheng spoke perfectly; words polite and concise.
"Sect Leader Jiang." Lan Xichen was warm as always, though Wei Wuxian could hear the strain in his tone.
"Hanguang Jun, I've never seen you attend one of these before. What brings you this time?" Wei Wuxian felt his brother’s attention shift to him, and he wanted to tremble under the pressure. Instead he cast his covered eyes downwards and obtained a tighter grip on Lan Zhan's arm. Luckily Zewu Jun was saved from having to answer any questions Jiang Cheng might have by way of Jin Guangyao and, to Wei Wuxian’s delight, Jin Ling. Wei Wuxian could only smile inwardly at how little his brother had changed; gruffly scolding their sister’s son. Jin Ling was childish in his responses; acting cute and adorable to escape his Uncles ire. Wei Wuxian could only long for the warm feelings they held within for each other.
• • •
There was a falseness to Jin Guangyao that was painfully obvious. Wei Wuxian could feel his spiritual energy fluctuate rapidly before he seemed to clamp down on it. Wei Wuxian could admire his control. They were all lead into the Pageant Hall and seated. Lan Xichen moved off to mingle before the official start. Wei Wuxian survived the speeches that followed but after a quick conversation with Lan Zhan he wandered off on his own. He had marveled at the performance Nie Huaisang put on; he knew his old friend was cunning, but this was something else entirely. He moved aimlessly, content to listen to the snippets of conversations he could easily hear as they wafted his way. The smell of water drew Wei Wuxian outside, the serenity in the air reminding him of Lotus Pier.
"Senior Mo?" Wei Wuxian jumped, so caught up in his surroundings he hadn't noticed his golden nephew approaching.
• • •
Still clutching his heart Wei Wuxian almost missed Jin Ling’s question.
"Why am I here? This is where my feet brought me." He grinned when the boy’s anger spiked. Laughing he ruffled Jin Ling’s hair.
"You are so very much like your Uncle." a flash of pride, "His temperament doesn’t suit you. You’re too defensive." And back to anger. However, that changed to fear and fierce protectiveness when three other people joined them.
"I thought I saw wrong but here you are Mo Xuanyu. You truly are shameless to come back here." Jin Ling shuffled in place. Wei Wuxian wanted to know why he was nervous.
"Jin Chan what are you doing here? You have no business here." Wei Wuxian wanted to step between the two boys but settled for glaring in the general direction of Jin Chan.
“And why is it your business, or are you pitying him since your Uncle blinded him?"
• • •
Jin Ling seemed to wilt at the older boy’s words and Jin Chan didn’t seem like he was finished.
"What I do doesn't concern you." Wei Wuxian heard Jin Chan move towards him and immediately moved back, cane colliding with a structure behind him. Realising this was going to come down to a tussle, Wei Wuxian reached out with a bit more energy so he could feel his surroundings better. In the few moments it took Wei Wuxian to do this Jin Ling had rushed to get between Jin Chan and Wei Wuxian.
"Don't be reckless." Jin Ling tried to reason. Hearing Jin Chan claim he was simply a misbehaving disciple made Wei Wuxian want to laugh, Mo Xuanyu was clearly older than all these boys. Hearing Jin Ling say he'd been swept out like rubbish was a bit hurtful. But out of the whole passive argument Wei Wuxian could only focus on the fact that Mo Xuanyu had made a pass at Jin Guangyao, then he was stuck wondering if Mo Xuanyu was aware he was his brother. Suddenly Wei Wuxian felt dirty in his new body.
• • •
The resulting fight was lacklustre; Wei Wuxian would admit teaching Jin Ling something was somewhat of a surreal experience. He was disappointed Jin Ling didn't seem to have a lot of hands on knowledge; Jin Ling confirming this with their following exchange of words. Of course, the family bonding moment was halted when Jin Ling threatened to call Fairy. Wei Wuxian fled the area as quickly as he was able. He paused for a breath in what he hoped was a dog free zone. Leaning on the wall Wei Wuxian gathered up his wayward energy, breathing deep to control himself. Dogs always left him unraveled; both physically and emotionally. He couldn’t feel Lan Zhan anywhere and that made Wei Wuxian feel strangely panicked; trembling as he was against the wall, had he really grown so dependent? As he breathed a new conversation reached Wei Wuxian’s ears and upon recognising the voices of Jin Guangyao and Lady Qin Su, Wei Wuxian silently crept closer. On his arm the final scar burned, and Wei Wuxian could only wish for Lan Zhan’s presence.
• • •
Lan Zhan was also panicking; he'd somehow lost Wei Ying. He'd given the man some time to explore and enjoy some privacy, only Wei Ying hadn't come back and he couldn’t find him. Currently he'd enlisted his brother to help covertly search for Wei Ying. Emerging into an outdoor garden courtyard Lan Zhan came across Wei Ying's young nephew and had to hold his temper when Jin Ling revealed he’d chased Wei Ying away. Leaving the area in the direction Jin Ling pointed out Lan Zhan hurried as much as he could without drawing to much attention to himself. Stretching out his senses Lan Zhan tried to locate Wei Ying, but he could find nothing. That is, until he felt some residual energy gathered strongly in one spot before it led away down a hallway and outside. Following it Lan Zhan recognised the area from the décor as Jin Guangyao’s private area and Wei Ying was nowhere in sight.
Notes:
I'm late posting and its a shorter chapter and I haven't linked in any stories for you to read..
My neighbour accidently set fire to their property and ours so we've been a bit preoccupied with that.
I'm soooo sorry, I will try to make it up this following week. Please forgive any mistakes you find.

Chapter 14: Chaos
Chapter Text
Wei Wuxian was wondering if he should be worried about Jin Ling’s future. Mo Xuanyu had gone after his brother. Jin Guangyao was married to his sister. Was there something wrong with their blood or something? Should he perhaps warn Jiang Cheng? While he worried over that, he missed Jin Guangyao doing something to his wife. He did not miss him escorting her through a barrier of some sort. It hummed with spiritual energy and Wei Wuxian could no longer track Jin Guangyao once he passed through. Wei Wuxian traced the patterns of energy he could see, amazed at their purpose and strength. Given time Wei Wuxian wondered if he could replicate the pattern, enhance it perhaps. He was also curious about how to get through it; he dare not touch it to see if it was passable; having no way of knowing where Jin Guangyao was on the other side. The barrier’s energy began to pulse and Wei Wuxian just managed to skirt around the corner before Jin Guangyao reappeared. He was alone.
• • •
Wei Wuxian was proud of himself for his display of patience; he reckoned he’d waited at least five minutes to see if Qin Su emerged or if Jin Guangyao was going to return before rushing over to test the barrier. It felt solid to touch and he wondered what it actually looked like. It felt smooth with some texture in places. A gentle prod with his own energy had Wei Wuxian stepping through, the barrier rippling as he did so. There was no other presence in the room and he wondered where Jin Guangyao had stowed away his wife. There was also a very familiar energy off to the side and he made a beeline for it. Suibian was exactly as he remembered it, every notch, groove and engraving perfectly his. It suddenly struck him that he'd be able to wield what was once his most prized possession again if he put some effort into Mo Xuanyu's core. Perhaps it would never be to the extent of his old body, but to be able to fly again. Reality came crashing down.
• • •
In those moments of his fingers caressing his treasured blade Wei Wuxian’s mind had presented the memory of his sword so clearly, he’d forgotten his permanent handicap. His eyes stung and he hugged Suibian close to his chest as if he was a young man again swearing to bring honour to his sword and family. Feeling the resentful energy rise within him, Wei Wuxian choked back his sorrow and shakily started to examine the rest of the room. His energy was reacting to something else in the room and doggedly Wei Wuxian stumbled towards it. His fingers brushed aside some talismans and Wei Wuxian almost died of shock when they encountered the texture of skin. Yanking his hand back, Wei Wuxian breathed through his initial flight response and reached forward once more. He knew he shouldn’t. Wei Wuxian did consider leaving to find Lan Zhan, but a part of him knew this was important. Closing his eyes and brushing aside all the mental warnings his mind was giving him, Wei Wuxian began empathy.
• • •
Lan Wangji feared for his sanity. He had reached a dead end following Wei Ying’s energy and could not decide on a course of action. He had found a large concentration of energy using Wei Ying’s technique, but he was at a loss of what it was or how to deal with it. Stopping to consider his options, Lan Zhan decided finding his brother was the only option he had. Hopefully his brother could ask Jin Guangyao to explain it. He was two corridors away when the bone weary Wei Wuxian fell through the barrier. The need to get to Lan Zhan or Lan Xichen was the single driving thought getting him to his feet again. He'd had the presence of mind to leave Suibian where he found it and in doing so felt as if he'd removed a limb. Unfortunately, beside the shelf that housed Suibian, Wei Wuxian’s cane lay forgotten on the floor. And throughout it all Qin Su sat, unable to move, core sealed and pressure points blocked.
• • •
"Wangji, have you found Master Mo?" Lan Wangji didn’t need to answer, for his brother the devastation was clear as day.
“But you found something?"
"Large amount of energy."
"Show me." If Wangji thought it was important then this time Lan Xichen would listen. Together the Twin Jades retraced Wangji's steps. When they rounded the corner and Wei Ying fell into their concerned arms there was much relief that didn’t get to last; Wei Ying explained what he had seen as quick as he was able to. Lan Zhan wanted to scold him about using empathy unsupervised but recognised now was not the time or place.
"What are you doing here?!" Jin Ling couldn’t have picked a worse time to appear, but he wouldn’t be swayed, refusing to allow them any further. When Jin Guangyao arrived, drawn by the ruckus, Lan Xichen requested access to his treasure room and Wei Wuxian felt the betrayal Jin Guangyao felt as if it was his own.
• • •
Jin Guangyao was also anxious. He looked curiously at Wei Wuxian, who was braced by Lan Zhan’s arm.
"Brother, did Mo Xuanyu say or do something that's caused a problem? He is my younger brother, so I'd be more than happy if he'd like to come back." Wei Wuxian felt the hidden threat there and judging by Lan Zhan pulling him closer he also felt something. Or it could be the fact he was shaking. That might be it. Lan Xichen came to the rescue again.
"Please A-Yao." Jin Guangyao caved with absolute grace and escorted them to the opening, as it had been his intent from the start. Wei Wuxian could only grow suspicious at the sudden change of heart. As they walked Wei Wuxian focused, regaining some control of his breathing and shaking limbs. Lan Zhan had most of his attention fixed on Wei Ying, hand solidly providing support as they approached the seamless barrier concealed as a decoration.
• • •
The confrontation didn't go well. Jin Guangyao dismissed the barrier and greeted his wife. Wei Wuxian had been stunned and pointed out to Lan Zhan in a hushed whisper that he couldn’t sense Qin Su at all. Things began spiraling out of control when in the place of the former Nie sect Leader’s head was a harmless dagger; a dagger Qin Su used to remove herself from the world. As Jin Guangyao screamed questions at them, demanding answers, Jiang Cheng and Nie Huaisang arrived. From there on chaos prevailed and Wei Wuxian’s identity was revealed. He would never forget the hurt he felt from his brother as he pulled Suibian free. It was reckless and within moments Wei Wuxian could feel the strain of wielding it. There was also fear within Jiang Cheng and a surge of protectiveness. Wei Wuxian wondered if Jiang Cheng truly thought he would hurt them.
• • •
When the blades were drawn Jiang Cheng had moved forward in what Wei Wuxian thought was an aborted move to protect him and his heart had warmed. Then Jin Ling had pulled out his sword and Wei Wuxian felt truly terrified. He would not raise his blade against the boy and began planning a way out. Retreating back down the steps into golden hell was both torturous and emotional. Having Lan Zhan publicly declare his support was like having a dream come true, and the moment was bittersweet. However, the moment of Jin Ling’s blade sliding through his flesh was surreal and in his mind Jiang Cheng was once again before him; Wei Wuxian lamented on their similarities once more. "They even stab me in the same place." he jokingly whined to Lan Zhan. He wanted to growl at the man though, when he shoved Jin Ling away, but his knees buckled and he fell into Lan Zhan’s waiting arms. As Lan Zhan dragged him away, Wei Wuxian was not aware of the trembling form of Jin Ling dropping his sword, nor that Jiang Cheng had hurried down the steps to gather their nephew into his arms.

Chapter 15: Storm
Chapter Text
Jin Ling doesn’t remember much after watching his father’s blade sink into the belly of a man he had grown very fond of. He's not sure how he reached the bottom of the stairs, but the entire situation had been a strain on his nerves and his body had just reacted. When his uncle’s arms surrounded him Jin Ling gave into the warmth and went where he was guided. He failed to notice Jiang Cheng leading him to his uncle’s guest room nor that everyone had been sent away. Sitting perched on Jiang Cheng’s bed Jin Ling stared down at his twitching hands.
"Jin Ling, speak to me." Jiang Cheng pleaded. He was traumatised in his own right and yet the comatose form of his nephew was scaring him more than anything at this moment. His words opened up a floodgate and Jin Ling began to openly sob, clinging to Jiang Cheng as if he were a young boy hiding from the bullies again. Jiang Cheng could only clutch him closer until he calmed.
• • •
The sobs changed to hiccups and the tears continued to fall when Jin Ling finally began to speak.
"I didn’t mean too but I did... what if he dies?" he wailed. Jiang Cheng barely controlled his flinch as the image of Wei Wuxian falling away from him came to his mind.
"He won’t. If there is one thing that man is, it's resilient. "
"He didn’t do anything... he just fell... " Jin Ling cried. His words were muffled; face still buried in Jiang Cheng’s chest. Jiang Cheng pushed him away slightly, taking a firm grasp on his emotions and tucking them away to never be dealt with before speaking.
"He won’t blame you. He'll understand why. He'll probably be concerned with how you’re handling it." More tears welled up in Jin Ling’s eyes at those words and nothing Jiang Cheng said would calm him again. He could only tuck the emotionally drained boy into bed when he cried himself to sleep, wishing, not for the first time, that his sister was here with her right words and comforting presence.
• • •
Jiang Cheng sat on the floor beside the bed housing Jin Ling, head in his hands, his own tears falling. Trust Wei Wuxian to bring out all of his emotions in a big conflicted mess. For once his anger was failing to ignite, allowing sorrow and grief to run amok for the first time in years. What was he supposed to do when each time they met there was a pain in his heart that made him short of breath and uneasy in his body? Jiang Cheng couldn’t harm Wei Wuxian, he knew that much; and it caused him such heartache in itself. Who knew after so long he would still feel such a bond with the one who'd caused so much pain? And Jin Ling... The boy had begun to speak of his strange uncle who was attached to Hanguang Jun with some fondness, enjoying the attention most would not give. This would hurt his nephew immensely. Had Jin Ling not suffered enough in his life? Hadn't he as well? But through all his agonising thoughts, one in particular haunted Jiang Cheng’s mind. Would he have to lose Wei Wuxian again and could he survive it? Jiang Cheng just didn't know and, as a storm raged outside, that thought terrified him more than most.

Lan Xichen made his exit as soon as it was politically polite to do so. His sworn brother was going into mourning and his blood brother was missing with an injured, wanted man relying on him. So as soon as he was able - not even half day later - Lan Xichen was hurrying towards where they'd left Wen Ning. He hoped he was correct in his assumption of Wen Ning and Wei Wuxian’s bond and that Wen Ning would be able to somewhat track his wayward Master. He'd seen how exhausted Wangji was and knew he wouldn’t risk Master Wei’s health by trying to travel by sword. He hoped Wangji trusted him enough to head back to Cloud Recesses. So many things weren't making sense and Lan Xichen would protect both Wangji and Master Wei until the issue was completely resolved. Above him the starlight faded as ominous clouds rolled over. Lan Xichen felt despair when the first drops landed; cool against his face. Thunder and lightning echoed overhead, and Lan Xichen hastened his peace. Time was of the essence and he couldn't afford to dawdle in his mind.
• • •
Wen Ning was already aware something was wrong. Though currently far from the action he knew things had gone amiss and had already started his journey towards the Golden City. He'd first become aware when his strange connection with Master Wei had vanished. The initial panic had him running from the Inn he was residing in. When the connection had returned he’d paused, unsure if he should risk going further to try to enter the city or not. He waited almost until nightfall, his uneasy feeling refusing to go away. When the heavy clouds rolled over a fierce storm began to play its tune and Wen Ning turned to head back to the Inn only for his heightened hearing to pick up rapidly approaching footsteps. When the familiar white robes if Lan Xichen came into view Wen Ning began to wish he’d followed his earlier instinct.
• • •
"A-Ning, have Wangji and Master Wei come this way?"
“No. What happened?"
"Can you track Master Wei?" Lan Xichen tossed propriety to the side, grasping Wen Ning’s shoulders. Wen Ning nodded, the urgency getting across loud and clear. Stepping away he closed his eyes and began giving in to his more primal instincts.
"Be ready to keep up." was the last thing Wen Ning said before his eyes snapped open and he was moving. Lan Xichen now understood just why Wen Ning was called the Ghost General and how such a gentle man could be seen as fierce. Lan Xichen had to fully focus on him to keep up with him and he could easily see how lesser cultivators would mistake speed for apparition. Wen Ning like this was agile and deadly. Lan Xichen could only imagine how terrifying Wen Ning would be when he relinquished all control to his instincts and Wei Wuxian.
• • •
Lan Zhan had dragged Wei Wuxian onto his sword and flown as far as he was able as soon as they were clear of Jinlintai. He didn’t get far, but it was far enough that he felt somewhat safe from pursuit. With Wei Ying’s arm thrown over his shoulder Lan Zhan directed them down the path towards Cloud Recesses. Wei Ying was clutching at his wound, practically being dragged. His mind refused to keep one thought at the forefront and his feet felt heavy; losing purchase with the ground and failing to lift. Finally, the famous strength of Hanguang Jun failed and both crashed to their knees. Lan Zhan was quick to cushion Wei Ying’s form to his chest to prevent a full face plant. The sky opened up and the ground around them became a slippery, muddy mess. Lan Zhan pulled Wei Ying over to rest against a tree. Wei Ying was heading in and out of consciousness now, he could no longer feel the rain on his skin that was making his body tremble and convulse.
• • •
When Wei Ying passed out Lan Zhan felt as though his own heart would stop. Desperately he grabbed Wei Ying’s body and pulled it close. He had no energy left to give, the day’s events taxing on his impressive stamina. Even as his own eyes closed Lan Zhan’s grip on Wei Ying didn’t falter and when a presence appeared in front of him he subconsciously pulled him closer.
"Wangji, let him go. Let me help." Lan Xichen coaxed gently whilst forcing his brother’s arms to unwind from around Wei Wuxian. Wen Ning was quick to gather his master into his arms, Lan Xichen doing the same to his brother. They both felt a great sense of relief and dismay at having found their loved ones in the condition they were in. Drawing his sword Lan Xichen yelled over the thunder to Wen Ning.
"Head to Cloud Recesses." Wen Ning nodded.

Chapter 16: Handsy
Chapter Text
Wangji was pale but Lan Xichen could see no immediate injuries as they flew. The heavy rainfall had drenched them and their once pristine white robes were caked with mud and blood. With a hint of amusement Lan Xichen recalled Sizhui mention Senior Wei complaining that their white robes were not made for travelling. A gust of wind unsteadied him for a mere moment but it was enough to make him hold his brother closer. It was a long journey but without the juniors he and Wen Ning would make it there a lot faster. From what he had seen of Master Wei, Lan Xichen would honestly be surprised if the dark clad soulmate of his brother survived the journey. Risking a glance at his unconscious sibling, Lan Xichen wondered how he would cope if he lost Wei Wuxian again. Seeing pale skin, lips tinged blue from the cold, Lan Xichen decided he really didn't want to find out.
• • •
Far below but still easily keeping pace, Wen Ning cradled his precious master as though he were made of porcelain. He tried to be as gentle as possible, keeping his steps smooth and sure. Hearing Wei Wuxian’s erratic breathing and smelling the copper in the air was unnerving for Wen Ning, reminding him far too much of the past and the battles fought in it. Sect Leader Lan hadn't been able to explain whatever had happened within the gilded confines of Jinlintai, he'd been too busy trying to keep up with Wen Ning’s pace. He hoped the events that unfolded would be explained to him soon. Wei Wuxian groaned, and it sounded pained and strained. Wen Ning looked upwards to the white figure above before increasing his speed. He was capable of going faster than Lan Xichen and was still in possession of a jade token, so he did not need the sect Leader present to get into Cloud Recesses. For once he was not going to stand on ceremony, for his beloved master all rules did not apply.
• • •
Arriving at Cloud Recesses brought a great sense of relief to Wen Ning. He did pause at the edge of the barrier, his previous confidence waning. Unsure whether he would be welcomed, Wen Ning decided to use one of the areas Wei Wuxian often snuck in through. Once inside he ignored their guest rooms and headed straight for the quiet room. There they would be undisturbed. Gently he laid Wei Wuxian out on the floor behind the privacy screen before searching for wood to start a fire. When the water was comfortably warm Wen Ning stripped Wei Wuxian down and lifted him into the bath. The water was quick to turn red as Wen Ning washed every inch of Wei Wuxian’s skin. Twice he changed out the water, terrified that if he missed even a speck of dirt the wound would become infected. Wen Ning fell back on his training given by his sister as he stood by her side. He was so hyper focused he'd refilled the bath even as he lifted Wei Wuxian clear of the edge. His Master remained silent and unmoving as Wen Ning carefully pierced his flesh with a needle; delicately rejoining the skin in a neat line. Stitches finished, Wen Ning began to try and locate some of clothes in their possession when the doors slid open. Wen Ning moved before Lan Xichen could blink and he found himself pinned to the wall, Wangji squished between them. Mere seconds later he was released, Wen Ning backing away looking horrified.
"A-Ning it's alright, no harm done. We’re fine" Lan Xichen said soothingly, "I should have called out."
• • •
Now Wen Ning could add mortified to his current collection of emotions. Abruptly he turned back to Wei Wuxian.
"There’s fresh water ready.'' he said stiffly but softly, returning to his search for fresh robes. A white undershirt appeared in his vision.
"Thank you." The air was tense as they both focused on their respective charges. Wen Ning redressed Wei Wuxian and had him under a blanket on the bed as Lan Xichen dried his brother off. Wangji was nicely warmed up and Lan Xichen had found no other injuries, so he was content Wangji would be fine after some rest. If Wen Ning thought anything of Lan Xichen placing Lan Wangji into the same bed he offered no complaint, simply moving aside to allow him access. With Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji resting peacefully, Wen Ning finally looked Lan Xichen in the eye and spoke clearly.
"Now tell me what happened?"
• • •
Wen Ning didn’t know how he was supposed to feel when all was revealed to him. It was too much for him to process so he thought it best to wait a see how Master Wei felt about it. Though, knowing his master, he'd already forgiven and forgotten the attack. Wen Ning kept a silent vigil over Lan Wangji and Wei Wuxian whilst Lan Xichen disappeared to deal with the recent events and any fallout within his sect. It wasn't until morning that Lan Wangji began to rouse. Wen Ning moved closer and into his line of sight. Blearily Lan Wangji blinked up at him.
"Hanguang Jun, your back at Cloud Recesses, please remain still and I will go find your brother, watch after Master Wei." Looking sideways Hanguang Jun recognised the body beside him and his ear tips flushed red.
"Mmm." Content that he had been understood Wen Ning left to locate Lan Xichen, leaving Hanguang Jun to settle himself.
• • •
Lan Zhan was aware of Wen Ning leaving the Jingshi but he only had eyes for the man in the bed beside him. Wei Ying was pale, but he didn’t look pained. Lan Zhan ignored Wen Ning’s instructions and propped himself onto his side so he was able to gaze down on Wei Ying’s face. Soft lines caressed Wei Ying’s forehead and Lan Zhan was overcome with the need to soothe them away. Raising a trembling hand Lan Zhan rested a finger between Wei Ying’s eyes and lightly rubbed upwards. A tiny sigh escaped Wei Ying and Lan Zhan blushed again. Lan Zhan was beginning to feel the strain of holding himself upright and relaxed back onto the bed. His body felt overworked but not damaged. He felt as though he'd overdone his exercises as a disciple. A visit to the cold spring would be in his future once he was able to leave the bed.
• • •
Wei Ying didn't wake for another day, during which Lan Xichen helped his brother to the cold springs, insistent that Wei Wuxian was more than safe and cared for by Wen Ning. They discussed nothing; content to heal and meditate in silence, and by nightfall Lan Zhan was feeling rested and playing Rest for Wei Ying. Lan Xichen had retired to the Hanshi and Wen Ning had left for the guest room they'd previously lodged in last time. Lan Zhan meditated as he played; eyes closed and fingers moving by muscle memory alone. Eventually the relative silence was broken by a small pained grunt. Lan Zhan ceased playing and with a few long strides crossed to Wei Ying’s bedside. Wei Ying was awake and with Lan Zhan’s aid he was able to sit up.
"Your wound?" Lan Zhan queried. Wei Ying frowned as he accessed himself.
"I'm fine." Wei Ying’s voice was rough, but the relief Lan Zhan felt upon hearing it was immediate and he couldn’t help but draw Wei Ying into a hug.
• • •
Lans don’t handle their emotions very well, Wei Ying decided as he brought his arms up to encircle Lan Zhan.
"There there, Lan Zhan, did I have you worried?" A head nodded into his shoulder. Wei Ying could have gushed at how cute Lan Zhan was being but instead stroked the back of his head, fingers gliding over smooth hair. He was surprised when Lan Zhan sat back and grabbed his arm, pushing up the robe sleeve. Lan Zhan’s gaze was intense, his energy focused; something which Wei Ying noticed immediately.
"A blood ritual?"
"Soul summoning. It can't be removed by any means other than completing the summons requests." Lan Zhan trailed a finger over the closed marks and Wei Ying shivered.
"Mo Xuanyu was not in the care of a very nice family." Wei Ying couldn’t remember Mo Xuanyu’s life, thankfully, however the short period of time he'd spent in the Mo Mansion had not been pleasant.
• • •
With the allure of sleep beckoning him Wei Ying didn’t think to ask about his location, nor the safety of it; which was why when he awoke the next morning he panicked, at least until the calm energy of a sleeping Lan Zhan beside him soothed him. Lan Zhan would not be resting if they were still in danger. There was also the comforting presence of Suibian on his other side. Reaching out he settled his fingers around the hilt and sheath. Inhaling, Wei Ying pulled Suibian free; the familiar sound once again raising melancholy feelings. He also felt the drain on his meagre reserves which hadn't fully recovered yet. A hand landed on top of his and Wei Ying startled.
"Wei Ying." Suibian was re-sheathed.
"I can’t wield Suibian correctly with my current strength Lan Zhan, but I did miss holding it."
"You fought well at Jinlintai."
"Instinct and adrenaline."
• • •
Lan Zhan wanted to argue, but he remembered the arguments they'd had prior to Wei Ying’s death and curbed his words. He would not push his own wants onto Wei Ying this time no matter how much he enjoyed seeing Wei Ying wield Suibian again.
"Lan Zhan, where are we?"
"The Jingshi."
"What! What about Zewu Jun? And Wen Ning?"
"They brought us here."
"Us? What happened to you? Are you hurt?" Lan Zhan's ear tips flushed bright red as he was subjected to a handsy Wei Ying. He caught the wandering hands within his own,
"I was not injured."
"But…"
"Wangji is not lying. He was unharmed, collapsing due to exhaustion." For the second time that morning Wei Wuxian was subjected to a fright. "I was not expecting you to be awake Master Wei. I commend you on your constitution."

Chapter 17: Need
Chapter Text
Wei Wuxian made to stand but was held back by Lan Zhan, and Lan Xichen was quick to reassure him.
"Please, there is no need to rise. How is your injury?"
"It's fine. Your handy work Zewu Jun?"
"Oh no, dear A- Ning was very diligent in your fare. He handled all aspects from start to finish."
“A-Ning is here?"
"Yes. I believe he's currently in the Library, I will notify him you’re awake momentarily." Lan Xichen reassured Wei Wuxian.
"Wei Ying." Wei Ying felt a light touch on his abdomen and smiled indulgently.
"Yes Lan Zhan, you can check it." A light huff escaped Lan Xichen, but he too moved closer to examine the injury as Wangji slipped open Wei Wuxian’s robes. There was no redness to the skin and already the hole was beginning to close. Lan Xichen doubted he’d need stitches for much longer.
• • •
At Lan Wangji's insistence Wei Ying rested until midday - well tried to at least. He stayed in bed, so that counted, he thought. Wen Ning came immediately upon hearing Wei Wuxian was awake. The stitches were removed and Wei Wuxian got fidgety. The memories he'd gotten a gleam of harassed his mind, the music in particular replaying again and again. Finally he couldn't take it any longer and interrupted Lan Zhan who was plucking away on Wangji.
"Lan Zhan, can I play you something I heard? I don't know what it is."
"Mmm." Seeing he had Lan Zhan’s attention, Wei Ying pulled out his flute and allowed the song to flow. Mid performance Lan Xichen showed up and remained silent until he had finished playing.
"That is the Cleansing and you played a verse wrong." Lan Xichen commented.
“That’s how I heard Jin Guangyao play it whilst I was conducting Empathy." Wei Wuxian insisted. At his side Lan Zhan shifted uneasily. "Did I play it wrong?"
• • •
Wei Ying zoned out as he searched his brain for the answer he knew was close.
"Cleansing music is difficult to learn but the effects are worth the effort."
"Play it again." Lan Zhan requested, gently nudging Wei Ying. Wei Ying did as requested but was halted when he got past a certain verse. Both Lan Wangji and Lan Xichen agreed on the incorrect verse which led to Wei Wuxian being brought to the library and this time he was shown into the Lan Sect secret vault. Wen Ning had joined them as they walked past him and neither Lan offered him a complaint. Wei Wuxian had a suspicious feeling that Lan Qiren was not aware this was occurring, otherwise he doubted it would be happening. Lan Xichen perused the shelves whilst Wei Ying stood between Lan Zhan and Wen Ning, wondering what he was looking for exactly. Nudging Lan Zhan he quietly asked what his brother was looking for down here.
"A book." Answered Lan Xichen instead, having heard the question. Wei Ying listened to the sound of something being pulled off a shelf.
• • •
"This section of the chamber houses books of strange music." Lan Zhan explained. Lan Xichen handed the book he'd selected to his brother. Lan Zhan moved away from the group and sat himself behind the Guqin. He played through several pages with Wei Ying’s rapt attention focused on him before he stopped, having found a specific song. Gracefully Lan Zhan rose and headed to Wei Ying, holding the book out to him.
"Wei Ying, here." Wei Ying reached out his free hand and Lan Zhan passed the book over, a finger brushing with the other man’s. Lan Xichen frowned at his brother for his seemingly insensitive actions. Wei Ying though only turned Wen Ning.
"A-Ning, do you mind?" Lan Xichen’s eyes widened when Wei Ying handed over the book to Wen Ning and then rested his hand on Wen Ning’s exposed neck.
"What?" Lan Xichen began to query only to be cut off by Wangji, who was watching Wei Ying’s hand intently again.
• • •
"Empathy." Was all Wangji said but his older brother understood. He hadn't even considered they could do such a thing. Wen Ning slowly turned the pages; taking the time to carefully look at everything. Wei Ying remained still at Wen Ning’s side until he staggered sideways before catching himself with Suibian; which he'd been carrying since it was returned.
"Wei Ying!"
"Master Wei!" Wei Ying waved them off. Wen Ning also loosely grasped his elbow.
"My apologies, we haven’t practised that lately."
"You can use empathy to see things as A-Ning is seeing them?" Wei Wuxian nodded.
"Yes, though it’s harder to do so. It's considerably easier to just look at something he's seen prior to our connecting." Lan Xichen leaned forward minutely.
"Can you do this with anyone, or is A- Ning Special?"
• • •
Wei Wuxian paused. He’d never really considered using empathy that way. It was dangerous enough doing it with Wen Ning let alone endangering one of his other precious people.
"I really hadn't considered it Zewu Jun. Though I do believe it would likely be dangerous to try." Lan Zhan inwardly deflated, he would have instantly volunteered to share his eyesight whenever Wei Ying might want to see something. But Wei Ying sounded worried whomever he connected with would be harmed; Perhaps....
"Should you wish to try I would be willing to help." Lan Zhan stated honestly. He could see Wei Ying twitch at his words and enjoyed the smile Wei Ying graced him with. Lan Xichen and Wen Ning exchanged looks before Zewu Jun brought their attention back to the matter at hand. It was a sad realisation to the Twin Jades that their music was more than likely the cause of the Nie Sect Leader’s death, particularly to Lan Xichen whom perished the thought he had a part to play in his sworn brother’s death.
• • •
Wei Ying could feel the turmoil Lan Xichen was experiencing and he could also tell that Lan Zhan was disappointed with his older brother’s decision to handle things discreetly. He rested a hand on Lan Zhan’s arm and squeezed, no matter how much they wanted the issue resolved they needed to remember how others could be affected by this as well. They parted from there; each with their own thoughts. Lan Zhan headed to check on his Uncle and Wen Ning decided to retire for the evening. This left Lan Xichen to escort Wei Wuxian back to the Jingshi. The air was chilly, show clouds looming on the horizon as the two stood together in the courtyard -Wei Ying felt his heart break as Lan Xichen spoke of their history and he was deeply touched the older man was willing to share that with him. When Lan Zhan arrived and announced he had Emperor’s Smile with him Wei Ying felt like tearing up. Instead, as the snow began to blanket the scenery, Wei Ying simply followed Lan Zhan inside.
• • •
Listening to the sounds of Lan Zhan setting the table Wei Ying smiled fondly, though he felt sad. How did he thank someone like Lan Zhan? Overcome by the urge to see Lan Zhan, Wei Ying made quick work of crossing the room and kneeling beside the youngest jade.
"Wei Ying?" Lan Zhan sounded so concerned with just those two words.
"Can I try something?"
"Mmm." Slowly Wei Ying reached out until his fingertips brushed Lan Zhan’s face. He traced the features available to him and gently let a little bit of his energy follow their paths. Lan Zhan remained still; curious about Wei Ying’s actions. He could feel the foreign energy, Wei Ying's energy, crawling over his face but felt no pain. Wei Ying's facial features were focused; lips pursed and jaw tight but softening with each passing minute. In his mind’s eye Wei Ying’s energy painted him a picture. A picture of long dark hair, pale skin, red tipped ears and those eyes that saw through to his soul.
• • •
Lan Zhan felt his alarm spike when the blindfold covering Wei Ying eyes darkened. He grasped Wei Ying's hand.
"Wei Ying! What’s wrong?" Wei Ying's reply was choked by sobs but Lan Zhan could hear the joy present amongst the wet words.
"I can see you like this. I so wanted to see you right now. I needed to see you." The emotion between them was raw and Lan Zhan couldn’t help but draw Wei Ying into the comfort his arms could offer. There were things they would need to discuss at some point in time but at this moment, with the future so uncertain, they would simply have to enjoy the tiny pieces of time they could get. Evidentially, whatever Wei Ying had done was exhausting or perhaps the emotions were too much; either way Wei Ying dozed off in Lan Zhan’s arms. Lan Zhan tucked them both into bed once he safely stored the Emperor’s Smile away for another time. When Lan Xichen woke them the next morning with news of Jin Guangyao’s arrival he said nothing about their continued habit of sharing a bed.

Chapter 18: Siege
Chapter Text
Wei Wuxian was not impressed with being woken so early and was lightly dozing on Lan Zhan’s shoulder as they waited behind a privacy screen for Jin Guangyao to be shown in to Lan Xichen. Lan Zhan himself was patiently obliging as a pillow, nudging him upright when their quarry arrived. Listening to them speak Wei Wuxian was honestly a little surprised to feel the very real emotion of sadness coming from Jin Guangyao as he handed back his entry token; the feeling of betrayal. Jin Guangyao clearly felt wronged, but despite this the words coming out of his mouth were sweet and remorseful as he asked for Lan Xichen to open the barrier and allow a search to be conducted. Learning a second siege was going to occur was hard, it dredged up a lot of harsh memories for Wei Wuxian, and unconsciously he leaned against Lan Zhan again. It was gratifying and comforting for him when Lan Zhan leaned back.
• • •
Once Jin Guangyao had left Wei Wuxian shared what he had learned and urged caution from Lan Xichen when they agreed to split paths. In no time at all they were slipping out through the back area where Lan Zhan's bunnies resided. Wei Ying enthusiastically greeted Lil Apple who had also taken up residency here since he made too much noise in the stables. At Lan Zhan’s request they brought him along so Wei Ying wasn’t walking too much too soon. Wen Ning had gone on ahead to clear the path of any unwanted distractions. With Suibian secured to his hip and Chenqing twirling in his fingers Wei Ying played song after song, flitting and changing as he saw fit from his perch on Lil Apples back. Encountering MianMian was a pleasant surprise and he'd been at a loss for words when she'd expressed outrage at his condition. It was with a significantly lighter heart that Wei Ying and Lan Zhan left to continue their journey.
• • •
Wen Ning rejoined them when they were some distance away from the cottage and he confirmed the road ahead was wrought with puppets that were attacking on sight. The once clear path up to the area the Wens and Wei Ying had resided was now nothing more than an overgrown trail. They had left Lil Apple with MianMian and continued on foot. Despite the daylight hours it was dark amongst the trees and an ominous mist seemed to laze about the cracks and crevices: Yet despite all this Wei Ying did not falter in his steps, Suibian was proving to be an excellent guide, each tap to the ground giving him clear indication of where his feet should fall. The resentful energy that surrounded them felt like home to Wei Ying; it held no malice but it coated him with sadness, the deaths of those he’d once protected ringing in his ears. When they came upon the open area before his cavern Wei Ying stopped as he heard Wen Ning move away from them. There was no immediate danger that he could sense. His melancholy mood only deepened when Lan Zhan told him Wen Ning was searching the debris.
• • •
Their reprieve was soon ended, and they were forced back through the large stone doors which Wen Ning pushed closed behind them. Advancing, Wei Ying allowed Suibian’s energy to mingle with the resentful energy and spread out. Instantly Wei Ying brought them to a halt before leading them forward a few more metres, at which point they could hear the voices echoing out from further in. Wei Ying had already picked out Sizhui’s energy and was pretty sure Jin Ling, Lan Jingyi and several other Lan juniors he knew were ahead. Once the voices reached their ears Lan Zhan and Wen Ning stiffened and Wei Ying could practically smell the tension in the air. Yes, Jin Ling was definitely in there. When a little tantrum broke out Wei Ying decided they should intervene. He found it a little funny how terrified most of the juniors were of Wen Ning. Those that had grown used to him though just watched curiously as Wen Ning stalked his way up to the arguing quartet.
• • •
Honestly what Sizhui was saying couldn't really count as arguing, but Wei Ying had fun teasing him about it anyway. He could feel the amusement emanating from Lan Zhan as well. Wei Ying could only sigh as Jin Ling's approach was prevented by a Lan blockade. He could tell the boy was already nervous and embarrassed; he didn't need the added stress of facing down a stern faced Hanguang Jun. Softly Wei Wuxian nudged his guardians aside and simply gathered Jin Ling into his arms. He could feel the remorse and guilt like it was a tangible substance and Wei Wuxian couldn't begrudge the boy for his actions.
"I understand A-Ling. It's ok." Everyone was pointedly trying not to look at the duo embracing and were flat out ignoring the little shakes of Jin Ling’s shoulders. If anything, this made Jin Ling feel worse. He didn’t regret his actions, but he’d definitely felt guilty about it afterwards. He did not deserve this forgiveness or the comfort being offered.
• • •
In the background, Sizhui and Jingyi were describing the situation as best they were able; Sizhui, the little brat, even sneaking in a comment about Senior Wei not being able to afford those that corralled them here. Deciding the best course of action would be to leave before the cultivators arrived, Wen Ning went back out to disperse the puppets outside. Moments later he was sent flying back inside, the telltale sound of Zidian in the air. Jin Ling immediately moved out of the safety of Wei Wuxian’s arms and straightened his spine. They were too late and a small army stood before the Demon Slaughtering Cave. With their kids back by their side they gleefully spat claim after claim at Wei Wuxian, who calmly refuted each and every one. Off to the side Jiang Cheng stood with Jin Ling. His distress at the situation was not on display but Wei Wuxian could feel it and once again wondered what exactly was in his little brother’s heart and head.
• • •
Wei Ying felt great sorrow for Lan Zhan, who refused to heed his Uncle's call and steadfastly remained by Wei Ying's side. He wanted to offer some comfort to the loyal man but was at a loss as to how. The pity party was cut short when more puppets emerged from the tree line. Jiang Cheng stepped forward and Zidian lashed out, knocking back an incoming puppet. Moments later the weapon shrunk back onto Jiang Cheng s hand and he coughed. Wei Ying smelt the blood and was moving to fend off the next puppet before even he realised it. He beat back several with Chenqing until Wen Ning moved forward with Suibian in hand to provide a buffer. Lan Zhan also joined the fight as more of the newly arrived cultivators found themselves lacking in energy. Wei Ying though had shifted closer to Jiang Cheng, hovering protectively in front of him. Jiang Cheng watched as he lifted a hand before stopping himself. That was definitely not disappointment he felt.
• • •
When Sizhui shouted out about the array inside the cavern Wei Ying wanted to slap himself, how could he have forgotten about it?! He was also proud of the teen for yelling in front of Lan Qiren. Despite many protests the large group eventually headed inside after some clever words from Nie Huaisang. Wei Ying herded his brother inside, content to leave Sect Leader Su outside if he wanted to die. He recognised the man’s energy and was wary because of it. Unsurprisingly, the man and his people followed them in. Jiang Cheng remained with his sect, Jin Ling flanking him, up off to the side of Wei Wuxian, choosing not to stand with the rest of the hostile cultivators. In fact, Wei Wuxian couldn’t detect any hostility from his brother, just a lot of anger and confusion. The rest of the room wasn't much better, a lot of self-righteousness and a great deal of fear. Why on earth they were afraid of a blind man he'd never know. Regardless of the current emotions, Lan Qiren stepped up and repaired the array removing at least one problem for the time being.
• • •
Their peace didn’t last long as the group was left reeling when the truth was revealed and Su She broke the array. Wen Ning gallantly stepped outside to allow some more time for them to make a decision. Wei Wuxian took things into his own hands and, stripping down to his inner robe, sliced his hand on Bichen and traced out a lure symbol, relying heavily on his energy to ensure he was drawing it correctly. He could already feel the strain and his wound protested against losing its comforting healing presence. Thankfully Jin Ling had joined Sizhui in aiding Wen Ning with holding back the puppets, so he didn’t see Wei Wuxian rest a hand against it. Blessed Lan Jingyi immediately offered to act as an additional lure and Wei Wuxian could tell he was being honest. Hearing it made Wei Wuxian happy, but he still called the boy a fool before stating outright he would only need Hanguang Jun and the rest of them should make a run for it once the path was clear. With nothing else to say Lan Zhan and Wei Ying made their way outside.
• • •
Jiang Cheng was beyond furious. First, he’d woken up one morning to find Jin Ling gone with only a note to explain his absence. Then he received word that the other sect Leaders wanted to conduct a second siege on the Burial Mounds. He honestly hadn't considered that Wei Wuxian would be there, figuring Hanguang Jun would have stashed him away somewhere safe. When he'd met up with the other sects they discovered they'd all lost contact with their disciples and were blaming that on Wei Wuxian as well. It didn't help that the Sect Leader of the Lan wannabes was egging everyone on. With his usual scowl in place Jiang Cheng had led the charge up to the Burial Mounds, drawing admiring and pitying looks from those around him. He would not admit to anyone that he was maybe going first to perhaps provide some warning should his brother perhaps be there.
• • •
Jiang Cheng's anger flared when he spotted Wen Ning emerging from the cave and he immediately sent the fierce corpse flying back inside. It would provide a warning for Wei Wuxian and he could have an outlet for his anger. A win win. He wasn’t expecting the wave of juniors that emerged. Jiang Cheng snarled at Jin Ling until his nephew moved to stand next to him.
"It wasn't Senior Wei." Jin Ling hurried to tell him quietly. Jiang Cheng sighed. His life just wasn’t made to be easy. He listened with a heavy heart as the complaints and grudges were aired against Wei Wuxian. Jiang Cheng listened as Wei Wuxian pointed out several things they hadn’t considered and drew attention to the same man he’d noticed earlier. When they'd come under siege from puppets his rage had found another outlet until he'd felt sick and his strength left him.
• • •
It was somewhat nostalgic to be protected by Wei Wuxian again, who, despite having no sight, was proving quite formidable. Jiang Cheng was definitely not a fan of Sect Leader Su; what leader would sacrifice his people when an option for survival was available? He was less than pleased when Wei Wuxian seamlessly herded him inside with everyone else. As the arguments continued once the array was fixed Jiang Cheng separated himself and his people away from the main group purposefully. As far as he was concerned, they were being childish in the middle of a situation that was clearly bigger than they'd realised. Jiang Cheng wanted to strangle Jin Ling for not taking Zidian out to fight, but he also felt a strange sense of pride at the boy’s independence. It was absolutely terrifying for Jiang Cheng when he realised what symbol Wei Wuxian was painting on his clothes and watched Wei Wuxian move to face down an army of puppets whilst blinded. Was history going to repeat itself? Would he be once again dealing with the loss of Wei Wuxian?

Chapter 19: Overload
Chapter Text
Wei Ying doesn't know how they survived. He remembers sending Wen Ning to guard everyone’s exit but after that is a blur; a wild dance of athleticism and grace. Two bodies moving in perfect coordination accompanied by a deadly haunting tune. He knows Wen Ning rejoined them at some point and then his next memory is of being half carried down the path. The encounter with Sizhui was short but Wei Wuxian knows he called the boy by A-Yuan. He doesn't know that Lan Zhan heard his whispered affection, nor did he know of the realisation alight within his eyes. Lan Sizhui, for his part, only looked confused as he cradled his unconscious Senior against his chest. Lan Zhan remembers being terrified when Wei Ying’s great strength falters and his steps stumbled. Hurrying along with Wei Ying's barely conscious form was reminiscent of their flight from Jinlintai. Hearing Wei Ying breath A-Yuan’s name made him realise his clever friend had already guessed the boys origins.
• • •
Jiang Cheng could not believe the audacity of those surrounding him and their leaders; how dare they choose to run when Wei Wuxian and Hanguang Jun were sacrificing themselves. It was gratifying to hear Jin Ling voice his outrage even if it did little to nothing to dissuade them. They even invited themselves back to Lotus Pier without even a word to him. Or perhaps they had and he hadn't noticed, too caught up in the thought of Wei Wuxian battling it away back up in the mound. Watching the duo fight side by side saddened Jiang Cheng as he thought back to a time when they too had once fought that way. Seeing Wei Wuxian duck and weave under Hanguang Jun’s strikes and the enemy’s attacks served as a reminder of just how skilled his elder brother was. Like this he could remember the old Wei Wuxian, free as a kite tethered only by loyalty to the Jiang Sect. Jiang Cheng wondered what would have happened had they not cut that string.
• • •
Wei Ying was roused by the gentle rocking of a boat and the dulcet tones of his nephew having a meltdown. It was disorientating being on the water for Wei Ying, his energy reaching out and finding nothing. He rose with Lan Zhan’s help and stepped out onto the wharf to resolve the children’s latest drama. He briefly looked for Suibian before remembering it was with Wen Ning. So he settled for resting a hand on Lan Zhan’s elbow again. Wei Wuxian could feel his heart breaking all over again when Jin Ling burst into gut wrenching tears and refused to lower his father’s sword. When the boy ran to his brother's side Wei Wuxian could feel the judgmental stare from across the wharf and he turned his blindfolded gaze to squarely face Jiang Cheng. Wei Wuxian wanted to giggle when Ouyang Zizhen sassed his father before hiding behind Sizhui. His moment of joy was cut short when Jiang Cheng, in his own gruff way, invited him back to Lotus Pier.
• • •
The boat ride there was nostalgic and funny. Wei Wuxian draped himself over the edge of the boat and happily trailed his fingers in the water. Sizhui on the other hand was draped over the edge of the boat looking a ‘distinctive shade of green’ as Jingyi described it. The sun had set by the time they reached the pier and were walking up to the main gate. Wen Ning chose to remain outside and Sizhui quickly opted to stay by his side. Wei Wuxian decided it was a good thing Lan Qiren had gone on ahead, he could only imagine the reaction that choice would have warranted. Wei Wuxian sighed as he allowed Lan Zhan to guide him. The familiar smells and sounds were flooding his senses and he held a deep inner sadness that he couldn’t gaze upon his childhood home. That sadness did give way to irritation when Jiang Cheng refused them entry into the hall whilst he dealt with an urgent summons. While he had no issue plonking on the entrance steps, that was not the place one such as Lan Zhan should be.
• • •
When they were finally granted entry, it was to hear what two strangers had to say.
Listening to the two women speak Wei Wuxian could sense their underlying tension, they weren't lying about anything but they clearly didn’t want to be there. Inching closer to Lan Zhan he asked for a description of them. Lan Zhan painted a pretty picture with his words and Wei Ying spoke up to address the crowd and posed his questions. What he said went largely unheard as the cultivators rallied against a new target. Wei Wuxian struggled to pick out individual energies as everyone’s power grew turbulent with their emotions. He hadn't had this issue at the Burial Mounds and briefly considered whether the resentful energy there had helped him somewhat. His arm was also playing up; the cursed mark burning dully. Wei Ying and Lan Zhan wandered away from the group even as they called for Wei Wuxian to join them on the latest crusade, claiming the need for someone such as him who was aware of underhanded methods.
• • •
Wei Ying felt the sombre atmosphere as soon as they rounded the corner.
“Lan Zhan, where is this?"
"Ancestral hall." Wei Ying remembered the care they'd put into building the hall; each ornate piece painstakingly chosen and placed. Those early days of rebuilding had been bittersweet as they carved a new Lotus Pier into the landscape and peoples’ minds. Wei Wuxian was sure Jiang Cheng had only done better since then.
"Do you want to go?" Wei Ying wanted to pretend Lan Zhan meant leave but knew he was talking about going to pay their respects. With a sigh he nodded. As they lit incense and offered their bows Wei Wuxian allowed his thoughts to drift to Uncle Jiang and Madam Yu. He knew they'd be proud of Jiang Cheng and what he'd accomplished - Senior sister as well. He'd give anything to give her the chance to raise her son and love her husband.
• • •
Forehead pressed firmly to the ground, Wei Wuxian apologised with his whole being. Jiang Cheng drew near and Wei Wuxian straightened and stood, hands fiddling with his robes.
"Wei Wuxian, you still take yourself as one of the Jiang sect? Come and go at any time you like?"
Wei Wuxian desperately wanted to answer yes, that he would always be a member of the Jiang Sect but the words were stuck in his throat. Worse, he could feel the remorse in his brother and Wei Wuxian knew Jang Cheng was lashing out for that was all he knew. Jiang Cheng continued.
“Showing people around as you wish. Have you forgotten whose home this is?" Wei Wuxian’s arm was beginning to throb as his emotions wreaked havoc on his control, but still he needed to at least pacify Jiang Cheng.
"I have not shown Hanguang Jun any confidential places in Lotus Pier, at least not to my knowledge. He has more been guiding me around."
• • •
Wei Wuxian was aware it was a low blow. He felt remorse when guilt became evident in Jiang Cheng’s core.
"We've only offered incense and now we'll take our leave." Wei Wuxian’s tone was flat; lacking in emotion as he struggled against the onslaught of nausea and exhaustion. There was also pain, and most of Jiang Cheng's next words held little meaning to Wei Wuxian, who knew his brother was just looking for a way to get his emotions out. Lan Zhan on the other hand had already offered a verbal caution to the Sect Leader and physically looked ready to fight. It was an effort to block Lan Zhan from attacking, but he found he needed to gather his strength when Jiang Cheng insulted Lan Zhan. Turning, Wei Wuxian gained a stern aura.
"Jiang Cheng, you can scold me as you like, that is and will always be your right. But mind your words when speaking of others." Wei Wuxian's voice held firm this time, so honest were his words.
• • •
Jiang Cheng faltered before he found his anger rallying to the forefront of his emotions. Staring into the black cloth covered face he raged at Wei Wuxian; reminding him of all the mistakes he'd made and deaths he'd caused. As Jiang Cheng spoke Wei Wuxian grew paler, it wasn’t until he directly insulted Hanguang Jun and indirectly his family that Wei Wuxian finally allowed some of his own feelings to show through.
"Jiang Wanyin! Apologise instantly."
"Why should I? Because I insulted your great friendship?" Wei Wuxian had grabbed the front of Jiang Cheng’s robes before his mind could dictate a better course of action. Jiang Cheng felt glee at having finally pulled some emotion from Wei Wuxian, even as he pushed back the shame having Wei Wuxian mad at him caused.
"Have you finished?"
"Let’s fight then? Should I be afraid of you too?" This was what Jiang Cheng wanted. They had always understood each other best when sparring, whether it be physically or with words. Jiang Cheng found his eyes locked on Hanguang Jun’s.

Chapter 20: Nightmare
Chapter Text
Wei Wuxian took a few deep breaths, feeling sicker by the second. He wondered if Jiang Cheng even noticed when he used him as a physical prop. Those breaths brought clarity and he let go of Jiang Cheng, lightly brushing down the creases as he did so. He couldn’t fight Jiang Cheng here or anywhere. Not as their loved ones watched and not as exhaustion clawed at his mind. Unfortunately, without that hold he stumbled, his limbs feeling heavy.
"Wei Ying." A hand was on his arm, steadying him, voice concerned and alarmed.
"Lan Zhan. Let's go."
"Ok." Lan Zhan was swift to move them from the hall, but Jiang Cheng was volatile after getting so worked up and he easily cut in front of them again.
"Stop! Weren't you just acting tough then? Why run away now?" Jiang Cheng returned the earlier favour, grasping Wei Wuxian by his robes.
"Aren’t you ready for a fight? Let’s have it." Jiang Cheng needed Wei Wuxian to reciprocate. If he wouldn't fight how would they communicate?
• • •
Each of Jiang Cheng’s words were accompanied by a shake and Wei Wuxian only grew dizzier. If Wei Wuxian was more coherent he would have pondered over a blind person getting dizzy, but currently his equilibrium was scattered. He heard Lan Zhan demand his release and realised Jiang Cheng was feeling a great sadness, though in his current state Wei Wuxian couldn't fathom why. Lan Zhan must have forced Jiang Cheng away because the sudden lack of support made him sway alarmingly. Then there was fear and confusion from Lan Zhan and Jiang Cheng respectively. Wei Ying felt his limits being strained and once again urged their absence from the area. That was his last recollection of that time until he awoke in Lan Zhan’s lap on a boat that floated across a river that smelled of Lotus pods.
“Lan Zhan, please don’t take what Jiang Cheng said to heart. He was just lashing out. It's something he hasn't grown out of."
"He hurt you, again."
"No, I think this was due to the blood summoning. My final cursed mark is playing up."
"Concerning, but I meant emotionally."
• • •
Wei Ying didn't respond and instead wondered if he should sit up. Ultimately he chose too simply because the Lotus Pods were calling to him.
"I always wanted to bring you here. Pick you the best Lotus Pods." Wei Ying’s voice was wistful. Over his head Wen Ning and Hanguang Jun exchanged looks. Lan Zhan looked out over the lake and the endless sea of Lotus Pods. Reaching down he plucked one and held it out to the now silent Wei Ying.
"Lan Zhan? You know these rivers are owned?"
"Just this once." Lan Zhan was rewarded with a blinded smile just as he wished for. As they floated aimlessly Lan Zhan and Wen Ning filled the boat with Lotus Pods, burying Wei Ying as he used to bury Wen Yuan. Speaking of....
"Sizhui's past."
"Yes we know." Wei Ying confirmed.
“You didn't say anything."
“He seems happy." Wen Ning said, "We're happy he survived. Beyond happy".
• • •
Wei Ying nodded his agreement with what Wen Ning had said.
"I'm glad you found him Lan Zhan. You did a fantastic job raising him." Lan Zhan allowed himself a small smile. Sizhui was one of the few things in his life he was proud of.
"One day you’re going to have to tell us all about him growing up. I want to hear everything." Wen Ning nodded.
"One day." Lan Zhan agreed. Further conversations were cut off as a Jin messenger butterfly flew towards them. Or, more to the point, it flew straight into Lan Zhan’s awaiting palm. Wei Ying leaned closer.
"Lan Zhan what is it?"
"A message, Jin Guangyao just arrived at Yunmeng." Wei Ying looked surprised.
"Why does he come here rather than staying in Lanling?" Wei Ying could feel sadness from Lan Zhan and fear.
"My brother did not return my message."
"You’re worried about Zewu Jun? That Jin Guangyao may harm him if he gets desperate?"
• • •
Lan Zhan was anxious; Wei Ying could feel it. Wei Ying reached for Lan Zhan, who offered his hand. Wei Ying gave it a squeeze.
"Jin Guangyao is hard to predict but he does care for your brother, Lan Zhan." Lan Zhan returned the gesture and they both lapsed into silence. Wei Ying had the niggling feeling he knew or had come across something that could clue them in to the situation again. He sat up straight abruptly and promptly toppled towards Lan Zhan as the boat rocked. Lan Zhan obligingly caught him.
“Wen Ning!” The timid man jumped at being addressed so suddenly, "Did I have anything on me from Jinlintai? I remember picking up some papers from Jin Guangyao's secret room. I forgot all about them." Wen Ning handed the pouch he was carrying over to Lan Zhan.
"Sect Leader Lan put everything in there for me." Lan Zhan extracted the carefully placed paper roll and unrolled it.
• • •
"It's a deed; a title deed for property in Yunping City."
"If it was stored in the same place as the head of the Red Blade Master then surely it is important. It makes sense that this would be where he's going.”
"Agreed."
"Wen Ning, to Yunping City!" Wei Ying shouted exuberantly. Wen Ning hurried to oblige.
"What time is it?" Wei Ying asked.
"After sunset."
"In that case," Wei Ying swiveled his body and fell back into Lan Zhan’s lap, "let me sleep more?"
"Mm."
"Thanks." Wei Ying replied sleepily. Soon after, with Lan Zhan carefully slipping his fingers against his scalp under the watchful eye of Wen Ning, Wei Wuxian fell asleep. Wen Ning carefully steered the boat towards their destination even as Hanguang Jun joined Wei Ying in slumber.
• • •
Left alone with his thoughts Wen Ning reflected on his confrontation with Sect Leader Jiang. He knew Master Wei wouldn't be pleased when he learned he'd told his brother everything. But still Wen Ning found he'd be unable to stay silent as his Master was berated and mocked again and again by the very man he'd given everything for. Wen Ning had been enjoying his time with his nephew when he’d felt his Master’s distress. To say Sect Leader Jiang had been shocked was an understatement. Wen Ning had seen the absolute devastation his words had caused the man. His words also had an undesired effect on Hanguang Jun. Wen Ning hadn't meant to hurt him as well, but he would be lying if he didn’t think the man deserved some blame. Hanguang Jun was someone special to Master Wei and so was Sect Leader Jiang but they needed to appreciate his Master more. Hanguang Jun had improved and, now he'd learnt more of what his Master had to go through, Wen Ning had a feeling he would be even more caring and protective than before.
• • •
Hanguang Jun found his sleep plagued with Wei Wuxian’s screams; having to watch as Wei Wuxian willingly allowed himself to be strapped down. He’d thought the scream Wei Ying let out as he was blinded was bad, but this was so much worse. Before, he could barely remember what Wan Qing looked like but now she stood in perfect clarity before him, raising a blade to Wei Ying's chest. Lan Zhan found himself pleading with her to stop but nothing he said made a difference. When the screams started Lan Zhan tried to hold Wei Ying, to comfort him, to stop the surgery; but his fingers slipped through Wei Ying as though he wasn't there. When the first golden glow shone through the incision Lan Zhan hoped it was over, Wei Ying’s screams died down and his tear stained face gazed down sadly as the core began to show. Lan Zhan listened as Wei Ying urged her to continue even as Lan Zhan begged them to stop. As the screaming began again Lan Zhan forced himself to watch until the moment the last golden thread was severed, and Wei Ying’s limp body was all that remained.
• • •
Terrified, Lan Zhan reached for him only to be confronted with another scene. Himself, at the moment they’d found Wei Ying. Now he was looking Lan Zhan could see the fear in Wei Ying’s features. How afraid he was of being touched, of being found out. Lan Zhan watched as his younger self made so many mistakes, became someone Wei Ying wanted to approach but couldn't. Lan Zhan had hated himself before, but never more than now. His dreams - his nightmares - were replaying and he couldn't escape them. In the waking world Lan Zhan’s energy wavered and spiked until it woke Wei Ying. Wei Ying could feel the sun on his face, but his focus was on the man whose lap, he occupied.
"Lan Zhan? Lan Zhan wake up!" Lan Zhan’s eyes snapped open and immediately fixated on Wei Ying.
"Are you staring at me?"
"Mm"
"Is there something on my face?" No reply.
• • •
“Lan Zhan, are you alright?"
"Mm." Indeed, Lan Zhan’s energies were calming.
"Nightmare?"
“Of sorts."
"Want to speak about it?"
"No." Lan Zhan answered abruptly and regretted it when Wei Ying flinched ever so slightly.
"I was..... thinking of past mistakes."
"You don't make mistakes." Wei Ying stated, his tone daring anyone to argue with him. Lan Zhan smiled gently and lightly poked Wei Ying on his forehead. Just being with this person brought him inner peace.
"I do. I must learn from them. But know my path will not diverge from yours."
“Lan Zhan?"
"My biggest mistake will not be repeated. Where you lead, I will follow."
"Lan Zhan! I warned you about saying things like that. My poor heart!"
Lan Zhan smiled softly at Wei Ying’s theatrics. Yes, this person truly brought him peace.

Chapter 21: Action
Chapter Text
Wen Ning chose the moment of silence to interject.
"Masters, we are approaching a city."
He reached up and fixed his mask back into place, having not worn it since the Burial mounds. Wei Ying sat up and looked eagerly towards the noises, senses reaching out. When they knocked against the wooden berth Wen Ning immediately stepped out and secured the boat. Lan Zhan helped Wei Ying stand and step onto land. Wei Ying's head turned every which way, following the various voices calling out to each other. Lan Zhan took his hand and guided it to the crook of his elbow. Neither Lan Zhan nor Wen Ning mentioned how Suibian had been left with Jiang Cheng. They could only hope he didn’t ask for it.
"Not that I don't mind hanging off your arm Lan Zhan, but I can get around just as well with Suibian and we probably shouldn’t draw too much attention. Wen Ning, can I have my sword back?'' Wen Ning missed a step then promptly fell to his knees.
“Forgive me Master, it's with Sect Leader Jiang." Wei Wuxian froze, his whole world tilting off its axis.
• • •
"Breath Wei Ying." Lan Zhan’s voice was like a port in the storm that was Wei Ying's mind right now. Unbeknownst to Wei Ying, Lan Zhan had guided him into a side alley as his knees buckled. Wei Ying couldn't formulate words currently, his thoughts going over all the possible reactions Jiang Cheng might have had, and he’d admit he was panicking a bit.
“Master Wei."
"How did he react?" Wei Ying managed to get out. Wei Ying realised he'd be seated on the ground if Lan Zhan didn’t have him trapped within his arms. Wen Ning and Lan Zhan glanced at each other; Wei Ying read the silence and felt his usually mild temper spike.
"Don't do that! Don't sneak around right in front of me! I’m supposed to be able to trust you both." Wei Ying moved away from them both, unable to handle being treated as if he were fragile. The anguish in his voice was unbearable to the two men who were closest to him.
"Wei Ying, Master Wei." The combination of confused voices and hurt energy was giving Wei Ying a headache and nauseas feeling. Wei Ying could feel himself losing control and the world slowing, growing dimmer to him.
• • •
"I need to process this. Can you just, just go investigate?" Wei Ying was feeling very detached at this point and needed some time to himself to sort out his emotions. Lan Zhan moved closer and Wei Ying backed up a step.
"Wei Ying?" Wei Ying hated that tone and hated himself for hurting Lan Zhan, but with his biggest secret in the open - his very reason for everything that occurred after the destruction of Lotus Pier - Wei Ying was feeling vulnerable and, if he were honest with himself, a little betrayed by Wen Ning.
“We will meet at the boat this evening then." Lan Zhan relented reluctantly, knowing Wei Ying wouldn't respond well to force. As he walked away Lan Zhan was already missing Wei Ying. Wen Ning was slower to leave, unsure of what exactly he was supposed to do.
"Master Wei?" a timid query.
"Please go. I'm not mad but I just, I just need time. Stay with Lan Zhan." Wei Ying was begging; begging for the privacy he needed to fall apart. Wen Ning went.
• • •
The minute he was alone Wei Ying collapsed into a boneless heap of tears and self-loathing. Everything he'd strove to protect was gone; all that he sacrificed was done in vain now, the last of his previous life’s choices ruined. Wei Wuxian hadn't been angry in a 1ong time; he’d been cross and frustrated since his resurrection but never outright angry, but now he was. He'd died for that secret, taken it to his grave and it was all for nothing. But most of all Wei Wuxian was worried about Jiang Cheng. How was he reacting, how would he cope knowing what Wei Wuxian had done without his permission? Would his little brother hate him for taking that choice away? Wei Wuxian wanted to drop everything and head straight back to Lotus Pier to check on his brother. Jiang Cheng’s expression after watching his parents die came to mind and Wei Wuxian bit down hard on his lip to suppress a whimper. Protecting his family was all he'd wanted to do but destiny seemed only interested in watching him fail. Wei Wuxian sunk in on himself as he tried to find a solution.
• • •
A hand on his shoulder almost caused Wei Wuxian to strike out but then he realised two things. One: he didn't have a weapon beyond his fragile cane flute, and two: this was someone he didn’t recognise; someone with a very low energy level, a civilian.
"Are you alright young man?" An elderly woman by the sound of her voice. Suddenly Wei Wuxian became aware of how he must look, a black clad blind man huddled in an alley. He probably looked homeless. Embarrassed, Wei Wuxian clambered to his feet.
“I'm fine. I'm sorry I disrupted your day." Self-conscious, Wei Wuxian quickly rubbed his face with his sleeve.
"Nonsense." The old lady brushed aside his words as if he hadn't spoken. "Now, I don’t mean to pry, but perhaps you should visit the temple when you have the chance. They could perhaps provide for you."
• • •
Feeling her hand tug at his elbow Wei Wuxian followed her out of the back street.
"There’s a temple inside the city?" Wei Wuxian’s energy settled as the moments went by with the distraction this woman brought with her kind voice and gentle hands.
"Oh yes, the Guanyin Hall. I go there daily to pray." As she spoke, Wei Wuxian found himself tugged along willingly. As they walked she chatted about this and that and Wei Wuxian smiled at her enthusiasm, wondering if this was how Lan Zhan felt as he himself prattled on. "Here we are, there’s plenty of monks wandering about that should be able to sort you out." And just like that, with a gentle pat on his arm, she toddled off in her own world again, leaving Wei Wuxian with no idea where he was. Feeling alone, Wei Wuxian was missing Lan Zhan and Wen Ning. He had no one to chatter too and despite being surrounded by a bustling crowd of people he already wished it was time to meet up again. Sighing, Wei Wuxian headed towards the largest concentration of people and the repetitive strike of a drum.
• • •
Jiang Cheng was an emotional mess. He’d made a fool of himself running all over his home; startling his disciples with the demand they unsheathe Suibian. It had been a hopeless quest; one he'd known was doomed from the start. Now as he sat in the room of his wayward brother, perfectly preserved all these years, Jiang Cheng clutched at the blade and allowed his tears to fall; so much anger all these years, so much of his past all for naught. He'd accused Wei Wuxian of so much when he was only guilty of loving his family. Jiang Cheng's heart was twisted, he’d already doubted his capability to be able to face his sister in heaven, but now he knew there was no way he'd even get that chance. Jiang Cheng squeezed his eyes shut as he remembered the vacant look in Wei Wuxian’s eyes as he'd spouted all those harsh words. Seeing him with the nosebleed was confusing. Was Hanguang Jun not taking care of him properly? Had Wei Wuxian been injured at the Burial Mounds?
• • •
Jiang Cheng stood; his emotions were still all over the place, but his heart couldn’t leave things as they were. He had no idea where to look and was completely ignoring the fact he'd agreed to meet with the other sect Leaders again in the morning; all that was irrelevant in the face of the action he now knew needed to take.
"Sect Leader Jiang!" Stepping out of Wei Wuxian’s quarters Jiang Cheng was immediately beset upon by one of his disciples and the Jin junior who should have been glued to Jin Ling’s side. Irritation settled in his gut. What had that brat gone and done now!?
“Where is Jin Ling?" The look passed between the young men could only be described as fear.
"He left."
"He left? To go where?" Jiang Cheng definitely felt pride when his disciple straightened his spine to give a succinct answer.
“The gate guards said he was heading the same way they saw the boat carrying Hanguang Jun and Senior Wei's go; towards Yunping City."

"For the love of!" Jiang Cheng wondered if Jin Ling had spent too much time with Wei Wuxian if his reckless behaviour was anything to go by. Then he cursed himself instead. Like their sister, Wei Wuxian hadn't had nearly enough time with the boy.
"I'm going after them. Inform the other Sect Leaders of my absence at breakfast." The Lanling Jin boy sputtered about propriety but Jiang Cheng's junior just bowed. Jiang Cheng was gone in the next instant, striding off towards his own room. There was something useless there that should be returned instead of cluttering up his space. One hour later Jiang Cheng was hot on the heels of his rebellious nephew and sibling. Jiang Cheng rode Sandu low over the water, choosing that route over the road. Jiang Cheng knew the river was more direct than the well-worn path, it carved itself through the countryside and most of Yunmeng was built on or around it. If he noticed the discarded Lotus Pods floating along below him, Jiang Cheng gave no indication of it.

Chapter 22: Caught
Chapter Text
Jin Ling was furious; filled with self righteous anger at Wei Wuxian abandoning Lotus Pier without speaking to him and at his second Uncle. How dare he chase away someone who could tell him more of his parents; fill in some of the gaps left by people who should have told him more? Jin Ling felt Wei Wuxian wouldn’t lie about family or about anything really. He always seemed to change the subject when he didn’t want to answer something untruthfully.
"Why are you following me?!" Jin Ling glanced petulantly at Lan Sizhui, who was keeping pace beside him, their steps in sync. Fairy was ahead of them, tail wagging and eyes eager.
"I too wish to locate Master Wei and Hanguang Jun, our goals are the same, why should we not travel together?" Jin Ling huffed.
"Don't slow me down." Lan Sizhui graced the younger boy with a smile.
"I had no intention of doing so."
• • •
"How do you know they went this way?" Lan Sizhui inquired. Jin Ling paid him no mind. "Young Master Jin?"
"It's Jin Ling, and they didn't go this way. The gate guard said he saw a boat leave Lotus Pier and follow the river’s path this way"
"Forgive me, but why don’t we fly?" Fairy barked and Jin Ling would have sworn he saw a faint blush decorate those pale cheeks. "My apologies, I was remise in forgetting your companion." Jin Ling waved the apology aside, embarrassed by the formal tone presented to him.
"The nearest city is Yunping. We can ask around the docks there to see if a Jiang Sect boat has been there recently."
"An excellent plan.” Lan Sizhui agreed. It would take them some time to reach Yunping City on foot, but Jin Ling wasn't planning on stopping for rest until he had to. He would need all the distance he could get to be safe from his uncle’s wrath.
• • •
Wei Wuxian curled in on himself when something, a foot most likely, was driven into his stomach. He wanted to grunt but found his airway obstructed, his mouth covered. Wei Wuxian reached out with his energy but that only made him feel sick.
‘What happened? I was just speaking with that monk.’
"Are you awake yet Wei Wuxian?" Another kick was delivered. Through the pain and rising bile Wei Wuxian recognised the voice of Su She.
"Did you even realise you were recognised? Did you notice what changed?" the tone was mocking him, belittling him with each word. Wei Wuxian wanted to offer a few choice words of his own which unfortunately wasn't possible at the current moment. It was a futile effort to rise to his feet; his head throbbed, and the movement only made it worse. Another kick, this one grazing his head, would have made him see stars were that possible. He was yanked upright and essentially dragged, being struck any time he attempted to resist or fell behind.
• • •
A haze had descended over his mind as an answer to the pain now taking up permanent residence inside his body. Wei Wuxian was unaware a door was being slid opened nor of the exclamation that occurred afterwards. His name being exclaimed however drew his attention, but before Wei Wuxian could try and find the source he was in motion. Su She thrust Wei Wuxian through the doorway and straight into the waiting arms of Lan Xichen.
"What did you do?!" The first Jade demanded, "Master Wei?" Lan Xichen was ignored by Su She as he bowed to the other man in the room.
"You’re Excellency."
"Well well, look who you found." Jin Guangyao would have grabbed for Wei Wuxian’s hair but Lan Xichen’s presence meant a certain level of decorum had to be to be observed. Lan Xichen rested a hand on the mask that covered Wei Wuxian’s mouth and lower face; it pressed tightly into the skin on his cheeks. The normal coverings for his eyes were gone and Lan Xichen could feel Wei Wuxian trembling under his hand, breathing restricted.
• • •
"Is this really necessary?" Lan Xichen stared at the man he’d once considered his sworn brother. It pained him to see the earnest expression directed at him.
“You know how dangerous this man is. It simply wouldn’t do to allow him free range." Lan Xichen watched Wei Wuxian sadly, he could see the pain he was in.
"You won't be harmed, I promise you that." Jin Guangyao said, but now Lan Xichen didn’t know what was truth or lie. Jin Guangyao looked down on the black clad Yiling Patriarch held within the arms of the man he admired most. Jealousy reared its head and settled like a blanket around his mind. How dare Wei Wuxian demand attention from both the Twin Jades of Gusu! Feeling his composure slip, Jin Guangyao fixed his eyes on his sworn brother.
"Er-ge, I hate to ask this of you, but I think for all those concerned," he glanced pointedly at Wei Wuxian, "you should seal your spiritual energy." Lan Xichen felt his heart break.
• • •
Hanguang Jun was stalking the streets, usual stoic expression nowhere to be seen. Worried eyes scanned every nook and cranny for his lost companion; tension coiled around every muscle. Wen Ning had split from his side some time ago, intent on searching faster. When asked, Wen Ning stated he was unable to track Wei Ying unless he was open to it. It was quite painful for Lan Zhan and Wen Ning to realise Wei Wuxian had shut them out. Though a part of Lan Zhan worried Wei Ying was unable to and that part was fueling his frantic searching. They had located a temple that was unusual in its practices and in the skill level of its monks. Lan Zhan had been going to show the place to Wei Ying but upon returning to the boat and waiting, Wei Ying had not shown. Now he wondered if Wei Ying had found the temple himself and if perhaps that was where he should direct his attention. Detouring through yet another back alley Lan Zhan made his way back to the main road that would hopefully lead him to his goal.
• • •
Lan Zhan supposed he should feel some satisfaction at having been correct in his assumption of Wei Ying's location, but his current emotion was cold hard fury. Before him stood their quarry, Jin Guangyao, and secured in his hands by a thin cord of wire around his neck was Wei Ying. Wei Ying previously had been in the arms of his brother who was pale and sweating despite the cold air. Worse still was Wei Ying's condition. The man was almost white and there were bruises on what skin was visible. What was really causing his temper to stir was the metal gag fixed around his jaw. Wei Ying appeared to be struggling to breath and he wobbled on his feet.
"Aww look who's come to see us Master Wei. It’s Lan Wangji.” Wei Ying barely moved his head and Lan Zhan could tell he was not registering the words being spoken.
"What did you do?" Hanguang Jun’s voice was like ice, harnessed rage awaiting release.
• • •
"I'm sorry Wangji, I walked into a trap. It would seem Master Wei did as well." A remorseful Lan Xichen answered his brother. Lan Wangji could tell his brother's energy had been sealed and his anger intensified.
"How did you know about this place?" Jin Guangyao queried. Hanguang Jun remained silent and Jin Guangyao sighed. Freeing one of his hands he reached around and loosened Wei Wuxian’s gag before removing it all together. Lan Zhan forced himself not to react as Wei Ying spat out the blood gathered in his mouth and coughed up more. He glared hatefully at the device now lying on the ground, only now seeing how a portion of it would be lodged inside Wei Ying's mouth. Jin Guangyao stared distastefully at the mess now staining the space at their feet. Wei Ying's chin was painted red, his chest heaved as he sucked air into his lungs. Breathing through his nose had not nearly provided enough of the life giving sustenance. His mind slowly caught back up with the situation just in time to hear the soft-spoken plea.
"Wei Ying?"
• • •
"Lan Zhan?" Wei Ying wanted to move towards the security that voice offered but was acutely aware of the noose around his neck.
"Hanguang Jun was unable to tell me so perhaps you can enlighten us. How did you find this place?" The corner of Wei Wuxian’s mouth tilted up.
“Keeping all your secrets in the one place is just asking for trouble."
"Ahh the property deeds. That was a mistake on my behalf." Lan Zhan took a quick step forward, sword at the ready, but Jin Guangyao tightened his grip on the cord causing a line of blood to descend Wei Ying’s neck.
"That’s enough of that. Master Wei's life is on the line right now. How about you sheath Bichen?"
"Don’t even think-ugh!" Wei Ying’s words were cut off when the noose closed in around his throat. Lan Zhan glared but did as he was instructed.
"Good. Now seal your energy."
"No!" With the cord biting ever deeper into Wei Ying’s skin, Lan Zhan knew he had no choice.
• • •
When the monks returned with Jin Ling in tow Wei Ying began to realise just how serious their situation was. His body ached; his energy was sealed. Wei Ying was completely blind. Jin Guangyao had his people usher them into the temple and he'd promptly been shoved into Lan Zhan's chest as they were forced to seat themselves. Lan Zhan probed his injuries, fingers gently skimming over each bruise and abrasion.
"How do you feel?" he asked softly.
"I'll manage." Wei Ying couldn’t answer any other way. He didn’t feel fine and lying wasn't an option. Lan Zhan wished he could offer some form of relief. Wei Ying leaned into his side; eyes shut. He wanted to cover them, acutely aware of how they looked and wanting to spare Jin Ling. Said boy was quiet, no doubt in shock from his uncle's actions. Lan Xichen had not spoken since they'd entered the temple and Wei Ying wanted to ask after him but wasn’t sure how to phrase the question. The moment was lost when Su She arrived and ungracefully dumped Nie Huaisang at Jin Guangyao's feet.

Chapter 23: Poison
Chapter Text
Things only seemed to escalate. Wei Ying should have known Jiang Cheng wouldn’t be far behind Jin Ling and no doubt he'd been led here by Fairy. It was totally worth the mind numbing fear when the barbs rang out and echoed through the temple. The sound of Zidian lashing through the air filled him with a sense of both trepidation and relief. An odd combination, but Wei Wuxian was far from normal. Once Fairy was gone and he could come out from behind the offered sleeve of Lan Zhan, Wei Ying tried to focus on the fight being carried out around them. Lan Xichen was gently coaxing Jiang Cheng, attempting to shield him from the harsh manipulative words of Jin Guangyao. It was to no avail when Jin Guangyao finally managed to take advantage of Jiang Cheng’s connection with Wei Wuxian, injuring the Jiang Sect Leader and forcing him to yield. Wei Wuxian strained his ears, yearning to stretch out his hands and check over Jiang Cheng himself. Instead he was forced to listen as Lan Xichen eased his brother into a seated position. Irritation rose when Jiang Cheng shrugged off the help.
• • •
Wei Wuxian also felt something very familiar in the room; his core may be sealed but the resentful energy needed no core to function. The pain and lack of air earlier had interfered with his senses but now Wei Wuxian could feel it clearly. Jin Guangyao was holding the Stygian Tiger Amulet in his possession. The resentful energy was churning around them; not in large enough amounts for anyone to notice, but Wei Wuxian was particularly in tune with it for obvious reasons. The ground shook and the temple walls trembled as an explosion ripped apart the silence. Wei Wuxian couldn’t help the grunt that escaped his lips as the loud sound reached his ears.
"Wei Ying?" Lan Zhan's voice a soothing melody over the ringing.
"Loud." Wei Ying clarified, "Help me up." Lan Zhan did not want to aid Wei Ying in moving closer to the danger but none the less he fulfilled the request; bracing Wei Ying as they followed the others to investigate the explosion, leaving behind a distraught Jiang Cheng.
• • •
Jiang Cheng’s turbulent emotions had been swept aside into a tightly controlled ball of concentration once he realised Jin Ling had gotten himself into trouble. Fairy had come upon him at the boat confiscated by his brother and Hanguang Jun when they fled Lotus Pier. There was an amazing degree of clarity to be gained from the need to protect a loved one. He'd followed Fairy all the way to the large temple he vaguely remembered signing off on years ago. He crossed the courtyard, neatly disposing of those who attempted to hinder his advancement; his advancement which was halted by Fairy pausing to sniff an object on the ground and whimper. On closer inspection Jiang Cheng realised it was a metal jaw gag, the edges stained red. His fingers briefly clutched at the treasure stored safety on his person before hurrying after Fairy. Faced with the prospect of Wei Wuxian who may be once again injured, Jiang Cheng was unsure how to even begin the conversation they needed to have. Luckily Jiang Cheng had other problems to deal with first.
• • •
The agonised screaming that followed the explosion was unbearable and the smell had most of the hostage group covering their noses, including Wei Wuxian.
"Poison." Whispered Wei Ying; recognising the scent from his memories of Wen Qing. Sure enough the sound of bodies hitting the ground began as the screams grew ever quieter with each thump on the ground. Dust floated benignly in the air, though it was anything but. Wei Ying tested his control over the resentful energy slowly gathering within his body and found he could somewhat sense the other people in the room. The numbers were rapidly dwindling as those closest to whatever they were digging up quickly succumbed to the poison. Wei Wuxian could unfortunately feel Su she and Jin Guangyao moving back towards them. The raging power of Jiang Cheng sang to him as Lan Zhan helped him to walk. Also unsurprisingly he could feel one very much awake Nie Huaisang. And as the dust cleared in the main area Nie Huaisang began to ‘stir’.
• • •
Nie Huaisang made clueless an art form as he groggily climbed to his feet. Immediately he moved to follow Lan Xichen as he headed towards the commotion.
"Second Brother. Where am I?"
"Does he really not know?" Thought Wei Wuxian. Conversation was cut off before it could begin when Su She pulled Jin Guangyao away from the poison cloud still hovering about and leant him against a stone column. The stench of burnt skin hit those closest and despite himself Lan Xichen was quick to grab Jin Guangyao's hand and examine it. Wei Ying pulled Lan Zhan further back towards Jiang Cheng, knowing right now their closeness would serve no purpose and he simply wanted to be nearer to his injured brother.
"Sect Leader, are you alright?" Jin Guangyao appeared to actually be struggling to get the pain under control before he could answer Su She, who hovered at his side like a protective mother hen. Wei Wuxian wondered at their closeness.
• • •
Su She was quick to apply the medicine Jin Guangyao pulled from his belt pouch.
"Thank you for saving me." Everything about Jin Guangyao was perfect; he always managed to find the perfect things to say in any circumstance. There was of course genuine pain in his cries as Su She bound the wound. When Jin Guangyao chose to head back towards what had been uncovered everyone capable followed. The resentful energy was strong here and Wei Wuxian was sure the others would be able to feel it, though the stench of skin decay was strong enough to drive one to distraction.
“A coffin." Lan Zhan said for Wei Ying’s ears only. Su She swept the lid aside and Wei Ying was overcome by everyone’s emotions. Rage, despair, grief, surprise and fear warred within Wei Ying’s senses and his knees buckled from the onslaught.
"Wei Ying!" Lan Zhan was quick to lead him away.
"Big brother!” From Nie Huaisang sorrowfully sounding out behind them.
• • •
Jiang Cheng cursed his injury that forced him to remain behind as the others went to see what Jin Guangyao had been searching for. He was equal parts frustrated and fearful he couldn’t be closer to the action and his family. And then worry had to make an appearance when Wei Wuxian reappeared being supported by Lan Wangji.
"What happened?!" Jiang Cheng could understand why so many crumbled under the gaze of Lan Wangji, but he refused to be one of them as he locked eyes with the second twin jade.
"What happened?" he repeated. Wei Wuxian was the one to answer, leaning gratefully against Lan Zhan as he got them seated.
"It was too much. I got overwhelmed." Wei Wuxian didn’t elaborate, forgetting Jiang Cheng was not aware he could read emotions, "Lan Zhan, who or what was in that coffin?"
"Former Sect Leader Nie Mingjue."
• • •
"What!" Mutual disbelief was expressed from Jiang Cheng and Wei Wuxian. Wei Wuxian timidly grinned in Jiang Cheng’s direction leaving the man baffled in how to respond.
"All the missing limbs have been reattached."
"Jin Ling." Jiang Cheng grew concerned, how would seeing such a thing affect him? Su She chose that moment to storm back into the area, sword drawn and coming straight towards Wei Wuxian! Lan Wangji was already holding a sheathed Bichen out to block if necessary, but Jiang Cheng still found himself staggering to his feet. Su She ignored both protective men and snarled at Wei Wuxian.
"Did you set him up?!" Wei Wuxian mustered up the most prideful sneer he could. He clearly felt the aches and pains his body was currently riddled with because of this man and his master.
"If it were I who had done so this conversation would not be occurring. You should turn your gaze elsewhere." Wei Wuxian decided now was the time he should start poking at Jin Guangyao, much to the chagrin of Lan Zhan and Jiang Cheng.
• • •
Jiang Cheng sank back into a seated position; listening quietly as Wei Wuxian spoke calmly and with self assurance. He spoke of a letter delivered to Qin Su that Jiang Cheng knew nothing about and of the maid who'd spoken in Lotus Pier having been the one to send it. Wei Wuxian spoke of a puppet master, a person pulling all their strings to move the pieces where they wanted them; someone who had rescued Sisi, the other woman who had spoken up, and directed her to Yunmeng; someone who had the skill and cunning to lead a man of intellect like Jin Guangyao into such a deadly trap. Jin Guangyao had yet to come any closer, standing where he could still see the coffin Nie Huaisang remained kneeling at. When his last remaining man informed them all of finding freshly dug dirt, Jiang Cheng watched as Jin Guangyao lost his composure. The man was trembling, crumbling under the weight of Wei Wuxian’s words and thoughts spoken to provoke and inspire fear and paranoia. Now, in the temple of Guanyin, the Yiling Patriarch was once more entering the fray.

Chapter 24: Wits
Chapter Text
Jiang Cheng felt genuine apprehension when Wei Wuxian slyly suggests perhaps all this had occurred on the whim of the undead. Su She puffed up and called Wei Wuxian’s supposed bluff and Jin Guangyao calmed with the break in Wei Wuxian’s words. He ordered Su She to secure Wei Wuxian and Jiang Cheng; making it clear whom he considered to be a threat. Jin Ling had retreated behind Lan Xichen, his young mind struggling to comprehend the depth of betrayal occurring right now. When Jin Guangyao presented Su She with medicine to combat his own ailments Lan Wangji happened to spot the curse displayed on his chest and, with an aching heart, he revealed it to all. There was a certain sense of horror settling into everyone's stomachs as they begin to realise just how much Jin Guangyao may have caused. How far back had Jin Guangyao planned his rise to power? What else had he been responsible for? These were all questions Lan Xichen knew he needed answers to, and he wanted them now.
• • •
Jin Guangyao knew his carefully constructed world was unravelling around him. He avoided Lan Xichen’s eyes, unsure he could handle seeing the hurt he knew would be residing there.
"Was this all a part of your plan? You let us invite Master Wei knowing Jin Zixun would blame him for the curse." Jin Guangyao wanted to flinch, to curl up and never face the disappointment coming from his sworn brother. It was the one thing he’d always wanted to avoid.
"Answer me!" Never before had Lan Xichen found cause to raise his voice, not even when Wangji had his skin ripped to pieces by his elders. But now... now knowing that his sworn brother was the cause of all this suffering. So much death. Four families irreversibly changed. Lan Xichen stared at Jin Guangyao as he turned to face him; pleading eyes begging him to understand. Lan Xichen couldn’t and wouldn’t. For those who were forced to spectate it looked as though Lan Xichen was struggling to comprehend life at that moment.
• • •
Luckily, the brazen attitude of Jiang Cheng saved him the trouble of formulating a coherent sentence, forcing the conversation to continue.
"If Jin Zixun had not been cursed, none of the mess afterwards would have occurred. One ambush helped you get rid of all your competition and secure your rise to Sect Leader and the position of His Excellency. It is easy to see how you were behind Su She cursing Jin Zixun, knowing this." Jiang Cheng was ensnared by his rage; it danced across his memories and slipped on dreams that were once a ‘set in stone reality’. It grew fiercer and focused as he thought of all the chances Jin Guangyao had stripped their family of. Beside him, across a small space of separation, Wei Wuxian appeared to also be struggling with his emotional control. Lan Zhan watched with poorly concealed concern written on his face.
• • •
"Jin Guangyao, I don’t believe we held any grudges. Why did you pick me as your target?"
Jiang Cheng could hear his brothers’ voice crack and knew his voice was filled with the tears his eyes could no longer shed. Wei Wuxian waited, straining to control the resentful energies enough to listen for the truth in Jin Guangyao's core. Jin Guangyao turned his attention to Wei Wuxian, gently ushering Su She aside to stand before him.
"Master Wei, you should be aware of it more than most. Peace is not possible without conflict. There must always be someone to make the first antagonising move."
"You are a lowlife!" Exploded Jiang Cheng. Su She took offense on behalf of Jin Guangyao, calling for Jiang Cheng to explain what right he had to call him that. Without waiting for a reply, Su She moved on to accuse the others in the room; stating they had looked down on those not of noble birth, claimed to have been treated as less than human.
• • •
Lan Wangji pulled Su She up when he accused the Lan Clan of kicking him out because he didn’t have such things to protect him. The resounding tone from Lan Wangji was concise and powerful.
"The Lan Clan does not tolerate traitors."
Wei Wuxian felt Su She's sadness before he spoke.
"I'm so sick of you condemning me for one little mistake. You've never forgiven me! The only one that sees my worth is Sect Leader Jin; he was the only one to respect me! I'll kill every person who would do me wrong!" Sadly, Wei Wuxian could feel the care Jin Guangyao felt for Su She just as he could feel how hurt Lan Zhan was at the man’s words. Su She knew nothing, Wei Wuxian decided, how dare he judge Lan Zhan without getting to know him! How could he cause so much agony and death? Wei Wuxian was losing control of his emotions again; they were bubbling up and erupting from his mouth in the form of wet giggles and barely held back sobs.
• • •
Everyone turned to face the distraught man and Lan Zhan made to reach for him before Su She reached for his sword again, forcing stillness. When individual tracks of blood ran from his eyes Wei Wuxian could feel the concern radiating from his brother and Lan Zhan. Su She ignored them and called for Wei Wuxian to explain himself.
"I didn’t expect so many to have died just for this reason alone." Jin Guangyao's anger rose and he came closer, walking with a strange, deadly grace. "Master Wei, look at you falling into self pity, you’re probably feeling so unfortunate right now aren’t you?" Voice coy, Jin Guangyao prodded the Yiling Patriarch. Wei Wuxian concentrated of the threat in front of him.
"Do I not deserve to feel that way?" Genuine curiosity was present along with disbelief from Wei Wuxian.
"Master Wei, you were going to be attacked sooner or later regardless of whether we cursed Jin Zixun or not. You were too kind and untamed; too willing to step outside the boundaries of society’s rules." Jin Guangyao gave a tiny smile at Wei Wuxian’s obvious discomfort.
• • •
"For all the toes you stepped on, someone was going to attack sooner or later. You will always be the one they suspect first whenever anything goes wrong!" Lan Xichen could only shake his head in disgust, both at himself and at the man before them, the one he no longer knew. They truly had condemned Wei Wuxian with little to no investigation. Wei Wuxian was devastated at the truth behind those words, for they were indeed correct. He could not control how the world perceived him nor could he ignore those in need. Jin Guangyao was not finished; he knew his words were hitting hard and continued his verbal assault, describing his involvement in the siege that ended in much bloodshed. He mocked Wei Wuxian’s control and stated his life was already bound to be a short one. Jiang Cheng could no longer endure the painful expression his brother wore and lashed out at Jin Guangyao.
"You are the one who will be short lived!" Su She immediately moved to hold his sword to Jiang Cheng’s throat. Wei Wuxian felt his heart stop.
• • •
Jiang Cheng continued on regardless, spitting out words that mocked Jin Guangyao's heritage and the morality behind his actions. An emotional upheaval occurred in Jin Guangyao and Wei Wuxian readied himself to shield his brother, if need be, with his own body. Jin Guangyao moved so he could see his new sparring partner.
"Sect Leader Jiang, you should be calm. Being so aggressive to others when you know your anger points inwards. You know your feelings of regret and guilt, such a blow to your prideful ego. You’re simply avoiding this by trying to push the blame elsewhere. More specifically, you wish to place it on me. You may do so. It changes nothing. You are still the man who abandoned your right hand man. You are still the person who turned his back on his brother. You are responsible." Jiang Cheng was pale; he would have collapsed had he not already been seated. Jin Guangyao was ruthless, vicious, with his words. He shoved every mistake Jiang Cheng had ever made right in his face; laid bare for all those present to see.
• • •
What was worse for Jiang Cheng was he knew how these words were affecting Wei Wuxian. He could see the hurt residing in the lips captured by teeth and the fists clenched within in their bonds. Jiang Cheng had always known he could have done better, done something different. The way Jin Guangyao spoke though made it sound so easy, but it wasn't. Jiang Cheng had never possessed the confidence his older brother had or the ability to soothe like their sister. He had lacked the knowledge back then that he was powerful, that his words would have swayed public opinion. Wei Wuxian was aware of all this; he had purposefully chosen to remove their connection so the Jiang Sect could thrive under its new leader. In his own mind, Wei Wuxian also knew he could have been less secretive, talked Jiang Cheng into taking in the Wens in his care. He had chosen the single plank bridge over a wide albeit treacherous road and even as those who followed him fell one by one, Wei Wuxian still had not wavered. Feeling Jiang Cheng slip closer to despair Wei Wuxian once again felt that burning need to protect. Opening his mouth Wei Wuxian prepared to force Jin Guangyao to remember that he too could provide a suitable opponent in a battle of wits.

Chapter 25: Truths
Chapter Text
"You speak so much when one brings up your mother. It would seem a touchy subject. It's no wonder you killed Sect Leader Nie." Jin Guangyao clenched his teeth and rose to his feet at Wei Wuxian’s insinuation.
"We're leaving!" He told Su She. Wei Wuxian smirked.
"Sect Leader Jin!" Jin Guangyao froze mid-step. There was a decidedly cocky note to Wei Wuxian’s tone.
"How did you manage to kill someone as powerful as Nie Mingjue." Wei Wuxian would allow Jin Guangyao to gloat. It was an easy way to get the man to talk more of his secrets. Allow him to be in control and he would reveal more than he thought.
"After all, Xue Yang and you spent quite a bit of time and effort trying to recreate my technique. At least you weren't afraid back then I suppose." The biggest spike of energy Wei Wuxian had detected yet from Jin Guangyao occurred and Wei Wuxian allowed a smirk to stretch across his features.
• • •
"What exactly would I have to be afraid of!?” Snarled Jin Guangyao. Wei Wuxian leant towards Jin Guangyao and said man felt a shiver of fear glide down his spine.
"Afraid of him coming back for you. You thought you'd be in control. You were wrong." A light tug of his power was all Wei Wuxian needed to add an ominous chill to the air and cause some small breezes to flit through. Several chimes strung about the area began to sound and instantly everyone became uneasy; everyone except Wei Wuxian, who used the distraction to curl his lips and add his own whistling tune to the mix. The resentful energy in the area wasn’t Wei Wuxian’s doing. There were several spirits surrounding them with sadness and anger echoing from their souls. He would aid them with their revenge, but he couldn’t allow his family and friends to be hurt. Around him Wei Wuxian could feel the others squashing their fears in order to stay vigilant and he knew Jiang Cheng and Lan Zhan were at least aware he was somewhat responsible for the current situation.
• • •
A spirit approached and Wei Wuxian demanded it focus only on its target. Outside more gathered, forms shifting and changing till they resembled some of Jin Guangyao’s victims. The soul that had come closer gathered itself and struck out with what power it could muster. Jin Guangyao was knocked to the ground and even as he screamed in terror the air around them carried the words of those passed. They hauntingly called his name and promised a miserable death. In desperation Jin Guangyao looked to Wei Wuxian and noticed him whistling. Wei Wuxian ceased doing so when Jin Guangyao used his blood to force the spirits to disperse. Cold anger in his eyes, Jin Guangyao staggered towards Wei Wuxian.
“You certainly live up to your title, Yiling Patriarch. Despite not having Chenqing," Jiang Cheng was innately glad he hadn't been searched, "and my having possession of half the seal Xue Yang was able to restore."
• • •
Lan Xichen watched his once close friend slowly advanced on Master Wei and he found himself doubling his efforts to reopen his spiritual paths. Not a moment too soon Shuoyue sang and Jin Guangyao halted in his tracks, sharp blade level with his neck. Panic made Su She reckless but quick; he ducked around Sect Leader Jin and dove at Wei Wuxian, sword ready for the kill. Jiang Cheng's eyes widened along with everyone else’s, but his yell remained stuck in his throat. Lan Zhan however lunged to his feet, drawing Bichen. Su She was easily parried, no match for the Lan strength, and Lan Zhan disarmed him by slicing through the man’s wrist. Su She screamed in agony, his sword slipping from his grasp and clattering to the ground. Jin Guangyao did not flinch but Wei Wuxian felt the flash of anger and sorrow. Lan Zhan was quick to remove the bonds of Wei Ying and Jiang Cheng before turning to remove the weapons Jin Guangyao had in his possession.
• • •
Wei Ying stepped up beside Lan Zhan.
"Hand it over." The others appeared lost at what Wei Wuxian was asking for but Jin Guangyao knew. He did not blink as he allowed the Yin Iron Amulet to fall from his sleeve. When asked where he got it, Jin Guangyao blandly said he'd found it. Lan Xichen didn’t think his heart could shatter any more, but he was proven wrong as Jin Guangyao fell to his knees before them. Wei Wuxian cautioned against listening to the fallen genius, but Lan Xichen needed to know, even if he couldn’t distinguish between the man’s lies and truths. Worse still his heart plummeted when Jin Guangyao begged for a second chance and Lan Xichen badly wanted to provide it for him. Jin Ling collapsed into Wei Wuxian when the deception behind his father’s death was revealed, the boy unable to stop the shoulder heaving sobs that wracked his body. Jin Guangyao stood by, unaffected by his nephew’s plight, and told them of his sad story as if it mattered in some way at this point. It did not.
• • •
When no pity was forth coming Jin Guangyao dissolved into insane laughter, curling in on himself. Wei Wuxian felt Jin Guangyao's energy spike and Jin Ling was knocked sideways by his blind Uncle. Unfortunately for Wei Wuxian that meant that for the second time a noose tightened around his neck. He chocked from the tight hold Jin Guangyao had.
"Wei Ying! Wei Wuxian!" twin cries of fear rang out from Lan Zhan and Jiang Cheng. Jin Ling could not tear his eyes off the ever growing line of red appearing on Wei Wuxian’s neck. Had his Uncle really planned on doing that to him?
“Lying again?" Lan Xichen’s voice was toneless and Lan Wangji spared him a worried glance.
"I would have preferred a less burdensome hostage, but this will do. We will go our separate ways and in a few days time Master Wei will return to you." The offer was unacceptable to all those present and they were saved from having to say so by Lan Sizhui sailing through the air to crash at their feet.
• • •
Wei Wuxian was having a hard time distinguishing his surroundings with the lack of air again, but he could feel the approaching resentful energy. Jin Ling aided Lan Sizhui in climbing to his feet.
"What happened?" Queried Hanguang Jun. His eyes were now switching between Wei Ying and the threat moving towards them. Wei Ying was weakly coughing in Jin Guangyao's grasp, trying to suck in more air.
"I'm sorry. I tried to stop him, but he didn’t seem to hear me." Sizhui said sorrowfully. Before anyone could question him, a shadow appeared in the courtyard. The horrible sound of a sword being dragged across the pavement caused the sound sensitive Lans to lightly scrunch their brows.
"Why is Wen Ning holding Baxia?!" Jiang Cheng demanded from where he'd taken up residence at Jin Ling’s side. His wound still bled slowly.
"I couldn’t get him to release it." Lan Sizhui said tearfully, and Lan Wangji knew he would have to reassure the young man he had done all he could later on; A-Yuan was not fond of failure.
"He has been possessed by the blade’s spirit." concluded Hanguang Jun.
• • •
Lan Xichen switched out his sword for his flute in a single graceful movement; playing Rest in an attempt to placate his anger driver sworn brother’s spirit. The weather outside increased in crescendo, thunder and lightning dancing about the sky as Wen Ning roared his challenge to Jin Guangyao. The Jin Sect Leader's grip faltered and Jiang Cheng reacted by instinct, diving in to yank Wei Wuxian free. Jin Ling was quick to follow, dashing behind Jin Guangyao as Bichen swung upwards to sever Jin Guangyao’s arm at the shoulder. Baxia indented itself heavily into the ground, pavement cracking under the impact.
"Uncles!" Jin Ling cried. Jiang Chang and Wei Wuxian rolled across the floor, Wei Wuxian safely cocooned in his younger brother’s arms. Jiang Cheng was quick to pull him upright when they ceased movement, allowing Wei Wuxian to rest his forehead against his chest as he coughed and spluttered. "Wei Wuxian?" Jiang Cheng waited impatiently for his brother to confirm he was alright. Jin Ling had settled in behind Wei Wuxian and was resting a hand on his back.
• • •
For a short period of time it was just the three of them in their own little world. Lan Wangji had joined his brother in trying to rid Wen Ning of his possession and Su She was desperately trying to keep Jin Guangyao away from Baxia. The spirit itself showed no interest in the others in the room. It would appear Wen Ning was fighting for control though as Baxia's movement was sluggish and erratic. Wei Wuxian gripped Jiang Cheng's forearms
"What’s happening?" Jiang Cheng frowned at the rasp accompanying the words and the reminder that his brother was sightless. Jin Ling helpfully explained the situation and together he and Jiang Cheng lifted Wei Wuxian to his feet. Their hands were there to steady him when he swayed as well. Once more gathering his power, Wei Wuxian started whistling, determined to free his friend. Further away the resentful pull of the seal throbbed in the circle of Wei Wuxian’s awareness. Nothing he did seemed to work. No matter what command he issued, Baxia ignored him. Without a flute to direct his demand the message he was sending was not powerful enough to make a dent in Baxia's control.
Notes:
Gosh darnit! We're still here in this bloomin temple!! (Sorry my Aussies coming through :p )

Chapter 26: Tomb
Chapter Text
Jiang Cheng pressed closer to his back and Wei Wuxian felt something being settled into his hand. "Wei Wuxian, I'm returning this to you." It was something said so quietly it was clear it was for Wei Wuxian’s ears only. Wei Wuxian understood the sentiment. His finger shook as they found their familiar places on Chenqing. It felt right to Wei Wuxian, to be playing Chenqing with Jiang Cheng at his side, how it used to be and how it should have continued to be. With Chenqing in his grasp the seal immediately began to respond, prompting Lan Xichen to call out to him. Wei Wuxian ceased playing and the seal stilled. Lan Zhan gave his brother a look and, coupled with Jiang Cheng’s glare, Lan Xichen offered no further resistance. Jiang Cheng squeezed Wei Wuxian's shoulder.
"Continue." Wei Wuxian almost froze at the encouragement. A deep breath later and the calm commanding tune of Chenqing called to Baxia again. This time backed by the Yin Amulet.
• • •
Baxia swung round with such force Wen Ning stumbled. With growing resentment, it charged straight at the offensive person who dared to command it. In one heart stopping moment Baxia pulled Wen Ning straight at Wei Wuxian; murder its intent. The weight at Wei Wuxian’s back disappeared and his nose was then assaulted with the scent of his brother who now stood before him. Fear made his notes grow in power. Baxia collided with Sandu and Jiang Cheng clenched his teeth against the strain of holding back the strong sword. The pressure eased up and Jiang Cheng glanced at the fierce corpse wielding Baxia. Wen Ning’s eyes had refocused.
"Master Wei! I can’t control it. I can hold it back though so everyone can leave." Jiang Cheng's eyes widened at both the words and Wen Ning's next move. He yanked Baxia backwards and moved it around to impale it into a concrete pillar.
"Go!" Wen Ning roared. No one moved and, honestly, he should have expected that. Wei Wuxian called the amulet to his side and focused on Baxia once more.
• • •
Through of the entire Sunshot campaign no one really looked at Wei Wuxian. He was strong. He was dangerous. He'd walked into unknown territory and owned it. But now they watched. They watched as the resentful energy took shape. It clung to Wei Wuxian like lovers would during an embrace. The shadows wound themselves around his limbs and danced across Chenqing. The sight was breathtaking to those looking on. Wei Wuxian looked ethereal with the darkness encircling him. Very slowly, Baxia began to relent and followed Wei Wuxian as he manoeuvred backwards toward Nie Mingjue's resting place. They all breathed a little easier once Wen Ning was free of Baxia. Jiang Cheng thought it was downright strange to see someone other than Wei Wuxian in Lan Wangji's arms, but there he was supporting Wen Ning. Briefly he wondered if there was a rule about touching fierce corpses that the Second Jade was breaking before tossing the thought aside. It was unbecoming of a Sect Leader to think such things. Wei Wuxian was already rubbing off on him.
• • •
Su She chose the moment they’d all turned their backs to hoist Sect Leader Jin to his feet. Before he could go much further than a few steps, Nie Huaisang cried out and fell to the ground. Su She spun around at the noise and just managed to grab his sword as it was thrown to him. No one was more surprised than Su She when Nie Huaisang blamed him for the self-inflicted injury on his leg. Su She didn’t get the chance to protest his innocence. Baxia, enraged by action, charged back out of the coffin before Wei Wuxian could seal it and headed straight towards the man. Su She was impaled, a hole in his chest appearing as Baxia punched right through. Jin Guangyao cried out. For once his emotional outcry was real and there was real anger visible when he swung towards the wounded Nie Huaisang. Later Lan Xichen would say he couldn’t remember moving, but in that moment he had. Shuoyue had struck true, piercing Jin Guangyao right through the heart. Betrayed eyes shocked Lan Xichen and his grip on the sword failed. It was painful to watch Su She and Jin Guangyao use their last breaths for each other. Around them the resentful energy continued to rise.
• • •
Wei Wuxian was quietly gathering his strength as the current drama unfolded. Baxia was feeding off the seal now and affecting the temple. Apparently dead and buried was the plan for this avenging sword. The temple walls began to crack as the foundations twisted and rocked. Lan Zhan looked at Wei Ying who seemed to sense his gaze.
"I’ve got this.” Wei Ying called, "Get everyone out." Wen Ning heard his cry and scooped up both Sizhui and Jin Ling, bodily dragging them out despite protests. Wei Ying felt Lan Zhan move to his brother’s side and begin to coax him along. Jiang Cheng straight up lifted Nie Huaisang and carried him outside. Wei Wuxian felt the building empty and switched to commanding the seal to contain the energy reeking havoc. So focused was he that Wei Wuxian didn’t notice when the walls began to crumble and the entryway collapsed. He was just finishing the array drawn by shadows when a hand landed on his shoulder.
"What the hell do you think you’re doing?!"
• • •
Wei Wuxian started and his daze was broken.
"Jiang Cheng?" Wei Wuxian wavered on his feet and his brother was quick to support him.
"How exactly did you plan on getting out?" Demanded Jiang Cheng.
"The doorway." it was phrased as a question and Jiang Cheng realized that, however Wei Wuxian usually knew what was going on, it clearly wasn't working for him right now.
“It's blocked. Is there another way out?" Wei Wuxian shook his head.
"I wouldn't know. I'll get us out though." As the columns began to fall and the roof caved in history repeated. When the dust settled all that remained of the temple was a tomb made of rubble and resentment. Devastation and horror fell upon those gathered outside. Tears fell and shock set in. When the area flooded with the Sects from Lotus Pier chaos reigned and a cleanup was ordered. Digging began immediately. Amidst it all, Hanguang Jun remained silent and Wen Ning slipped away.
• • •
Jiang Cheng swore it was just like old times when Wei Wuxian had been in his life to provide a challenge. As the temple began to fall, he'd taken one last look at his brother before scooping their old friend up into his arms and carrying him out to safety. Right in front of him was his nephew, so Jiang Cheng didn’t need to worry about him at least. It was surprising to see Lan Wangji willingly leave Wei Wuxian behind, but Sect Leader Lan clearly wasn’t fully aware of his surroundings and needed his younger brother for guidance. Jiang Cheng sympathised with the man, it was a sick feeling when a close person betrays you. Unconsciously Jiang Cheng found his gaze returning to the temple doorway. Several large stones were beginning to look unstable. Jiang Cheng took another look at those surrounding him before worried eyes found the doorway again. Cursing loudly, Jiang Cheng ignored the worried cries that followed him and quickly made his way back inside.
• • •
Jiang Cheng should have known something would go wrong. When it concerned Wei Wuxian something always went wrong. The moment he stepped through the stones behind him cascaded down in spectacular fashion, sealing the entryway. Jiang Cheng rolled forward, away from the flying debris, and a metallic glint caused him to look at the bodies he stopped next to. Lan Xichen’s sword was still stuck in the body of Jin Guangyao. Callously, Jiang Cheng pulled it free and stashed it away. He wondered if the Lan Sect Leader would be able to wield it again. Looking up, Jiang Cheng spotted his brother still standing where they’d left him. The haunting tune of Chenqing was still ringing out, however Wei Wuxian no longer looked powerful. To Jiang Cheng he now looked worn out; older. His arms trembled as if Chenqing was a heavy blade, not a stick of bamboo. When he reached Wei Wuxian and clapped a hand onto his shoulder Jiang Cheng wasn't expecting him to stagger. Quick reflexes meant Wei Wuxian was saved from toppling to the ground, but they were still stuck inside.
• • •
Lan Sizhui was holding onto a desperate grain of hope as he watched the stone slabs be pulled away by those working on the debris. His Uncle had been dragged away by Lan Qiren to see about his minor cuts and bruises. Sect Leader Nie was also ushered away by his attendants to have his own wound attended too. Sizhui had been subjected to a fierce scolding from Jingyi upon his arrival before being wrapped into a tight tearful hug. To his amusement Sizhui watched Jingyi repeat the process with Jin Ling, causing the younger boy to gain a red dusting across his cheeks. Fairy was sniffing around the rubble, trying in vain to find a scent at Jin Ling’s command. The once quiet courtyard was now a bustling area of Sect Disciples and workers aiming for a common goal. For Sizhui though, none of that mattered. For weeks now he'd been having a nostalgic feeling as he'd travelled around with Senior Wei but, there in the temple, the familiar sound of the Yiling Patriarch’s Chenqing had awoken something within him.
• • •
His memories. Sizhui had long accepted he would never regain his memories from before his arrival at Cloud Recess. He had known he was adopted by Lan Wangji and that had been the end of it. Never had Lan Sizhui questioned his place in the Gusu Lan Sect or his Father’s love for him. But now he could clearly remember another love; one with a blinding smile, cheerful eyes, and joyful laugh. The arms that had kept him safe and the voice that chased away the nightmares. Nightmares filled with gold peonies and cruel words, of pain and hunger. Lan Sizhui missed Senior Wei and wanted to be held once more in those caring arms. He'd also remembered his uncle, but when he'd turned to Wen Ning the man had been gone. Lan Sizhui was saddened by his departure but recognised how dangerous it would be for the fierce corpse with so many cultivators around. With any luck, Wen Ning would meet up with them on the road. A step sounded beside him, his Father’s arm came to rest around his shoulder, and in the quiet moment amongst the chaos Lan Sizhui took solace in the one constant in his life.

Chapter 27: Bonds
Chapter Text
Lan Zhan wasn’t sure what to think. The arm he'd gently wrapped around Sizhui was as much an offer of comfort for his boy as if was for himself. Public displays of affection were against the rules but in that moment, Lan Zhan couldn’t find it in himself to care. The knowledge that Wei Ying was once again away from his side was unsettling, worse the thought of him under all that stone...
"I remember." From his side Sizhui spoke quietly.
"Mmm." Hanguang Jun wasn't surprised if he were honest. He had believed Sizhui would remember more of his past as he spent time with Wei Ying. How cruel were the Gods if they had taken Wei Ying from them a second time. The cry went up when the first bodies were found. People crowded forwards as the mangled bodies of Jin Guangyao and Su She were pulled free. Lan Zhan frowned when his brother’s sword was not in the immediate vicinity of the man he'd left it in. As more and more stones were cleared those present were forced to face the baffling realisation that Sect Leader Jiang and the Yiling Patriarch were not amongst the rubble.
• • •
Jiang Cheng came back to awareness with a groan. Rolling over he lay on his back and stubbornly refused to open his eyes. His wound pulsed lightly and his head ached. When it all rushed back to Jiang Cheng, he sat up abruptly.
"Gah!" The movement caused his injury to pull, but beyond his startled gasp of pain Jiang Cheng was too busy searching for someone. His dark clad brother lay several feet away, face down and limbs askew.
"Wei Ying!" Jiang Cheng's first attempt to rush to Wei Wuxian's side was an aborted one as his legs buckled beneath his weight. Inwardly, Jiang Cheng was glad no one was around to see his panicked scramble across the ground to Wei Wuxian's side. Grabbing the still man's wrist Jiang Cheng was relieved to find him alive. Glancing around Jiang Cheng couldn’t see any signs of civilisation. Surrounding him was a field skirted by a forest, not a road in sight.
• • •
Jiang Cheng scowled down at Wei Wuxian who was now lying beside him in the shade of tree. He hadn't so much as twitched when Jiang Cheng had awkwardly dragged him over there. His wound had protested the physical activity; not that Wei Wuxian was very heavy. Jiang Cheng was currently attempting to meditate and allow his body to recover, but his gaze kept wandering back to Wei Wuxian and the damaged he'd done to his eyes now that they weren’t hidden and he had time to examine them closely. Unable to help himself, Jiang Cheng reached out and lightly traced the scars there.
"I'm sorry." Jiang Cheng wasn't sure he'd ever have the courage to say that to Wei Wuxian’s face, but at least he'd said it. A hand closed around his wrist and Jiang Cheng flinched away, easily breaking the flimsy grip.
“Jiang Cheng.'" There was worry present in that tone and Wei Wuxian started moving. Jiang Cheng allowed his arm to be grabbed again. The grip this time was much tighter, though Jiang Cheng knew he could still easily break it.
• • •
"Jiang Cheng?" Jiang Cheng could no longer stop the tears from falling. All those years he had been alone with no one he could be himself with and here was the one person who knew him best, who knew his moods and how to handle them. Who still continued to care despite their shared history. Jiang Cheng lost all composure and was subjected to a pat down from Wei Wuxian as the man tried to find out what was wrong. Finally, Wei Wuxian settled for pulling Jiang Cheng close and letting him cry. He lightly tugged at the loose strands of Jiang Cheng’s hair the way their sister used too. His own eyes stung, and Wei Wuxian tried to casually brush aside the red marks adding to the stains on his cheeks. With Jiang Cheng sprawled across his legs bawling into his chest, Wei Wuxian could only imagine the image they presented. Dirty, torn clothing and blood stained; two grown men cuddling in a field of grass. Still slowly petting Jiang Cheng’s hair, Wei Wuxian used what little spiritual power he had to try and help heal his brother’s injury.
• • •
"We really are a mess, aren’t we Jiang Cheng." It was a statement, bone weary and world travelled. Together they had seen too much and apart they had crumbled. Wei Wuxian started when a set of hands wiped at his cheeks and broke the spiritual connection he had going.
"I'm sorry." Jiang Cheng said again. He will never know where the courage came from, but he was glad it surfaced when it did. Wei Wuxian’s response had them both falling silent while the words repeated themselves.
"I am too little brother. I am too." Time passed slowly as they sat together in silence, each one consumed by emotions. Wei Wuxian was refraining from using his energy at all now, fearing Jiang Cheng’s emotions would overwhelm him and having very little left. Sadly, Jiang Cheng seemed to realise the position he was in and removed himself from Wei Wuxian’s lap. Looking around he finally seemed to realise they were in the middle of nowhere.
"Where did you teleport us?" Wei Wuxian shrugged.
"No idea. I didn’t have that planned in advance so it’s random.”
• • •
Ahh it had been so long since Jiang Cheng had felt this familiar sense of frustration.
"Do you know how dangerous that was!? Which direction we should go?"
"Nope." Jiang Cheng stared incredulously at his brother.
"Why did I miss you again?"
"Aww you missed me!" The teasing lilt to Wei Wuxian’s voice both filled Jiang Cheng with annoyance and warmth in equal measure. Probing his wound, Jiang Cheng found it healed enough for travel. Standing he leaned down and pulled Wei Wuxian to his feet as well.
“'Whoa! Where we going?" Wei Wuxian wobbled at the change of position and Jiang Cheng began to see how tired his brother was. The marks from the metal gag were still prominent and his neck was bruised from the constant abuse. The thin red line stood out as a reminder of what could have happened.
"Are you alright?" Jiang Cheng demanded. Wei Wuxian nodded, and Jiang Chung hesitantly reached for him again. Wei Wuxian sighed and stepped closer, linking arms with his nervous brother.
“So did you pick a direction?"
• • •
It was awkward at first, Wei Wuxian stumbling along whenever Jiang Cheng failed to point out an obstacle. Jiang Cheng's curiosity got the better of him and he blurted out.
"You never trip this much with your great Hanguang Jun!"
Wei Wuxian giggled. "I’m not using my energy to feel my surroundings right now. I’m too tired." Jiang Cheng frowned.
"You're using your spiritual energy to get around?" Wei Wuxian glowed as he began prattling on about how he had been getting around. He moaned about Mo Xuanyu's small core and weakened body. Jiang Cheng walked at his side like in their youth, pretending not to listen but hearing every word. There were still things they would need to discuss, in time. For now though, Jiang Cheng was content with just being and having a brother again. They reached a small town and Wei Wuxian immediately recognised the local chatter and cheerfully told Jiang Cheng he’d landed near here on his last teleport attempt. Like that was anything to be proud of.
• • •
Jiang Cheng sighed and tugged Wei Wuxian towards an Inn. He paid for a room and escorted Wei Wuxian inside. Once they were situated and a meal was brought up to them Wei Wuxian asked the question on Jiang Cheng’s mind.
"What do we do now?" Jiang Cheng snorted.
"We go home of course. Heaven knows how much trouble Jin Ling has gotten into whilst I'm away." Wei Wuxian’s expression softened.
"You've done a good job with him. Senior Sister would be proud."
A part of Jiang Cheng reared its ugly head; ready to lash out and berate him for daring to mention Yanli. Then his mind registered the sheering longing in Wei Wuxian’s voice, and his memory brought up an image of a small child clinging to his leg amongst the dirt and grim of the Burial Mounds. Jiang Cheng suddenly felt sick. He hadn't given any thought to the boy. Had the child been slain during their brutal assault, or did he now wander alone in this big world?
• • •
A hand weighed down his arm and another ghosted across his cheek, wiping away tears he didn’t know were falling.
"Jiang Cheng?" It would seem Jiang Cheng was going to remain at an emotional low for quite some time yet, and Wei Wuxian settled him against the cushions before slipping out of the room. He was quick to have a message sent to Lan Zhan and Yunmeng and return to the room. Jiang Cheng was immediately in his face.
"What happened to the boy, the one who grabbed my leg?" Wei Wuxian went cold; unmoving, causing Jiang Cheng to grow alarmed.
"Wei Wuxian."
"Why?" Wei Wuxian swallowed, "Why do you want to know?"
"I had forgotten." Jiang Cheng answered honestly. “I forgot so much by choice, only saw what I wanted to."
"No Jiang Cheng, you saw what the world and I wanted you too.”
• • •
Wei Wuxian seemed to be contemplating his words and Jiang Cheng allowed him a moment to gather his thoughts.
"I wonder how much would have changed had I trusted your strength and conviction; if I had been less afraid." At that Jiang Cheng scoffed.
"You've never been afraid."
Wei Wuxian’s laugh was hollow; his voice spoke as if the room were empty.
"I'm always afraid. I was afraid you'd leave me behind if I told you I didn’t have a core. I was afraid I'd drag the Sect through the mud if I remained. I was terrified of failing Madam Yu; of losing my siblings."
"You lost us anyway. You didn't choose us over the Wens." It slipped out before Jiang Cheng could stop the words. What he wasn’t expecting was the angry response.
"YOU DIDN’T CHOOSE ME!" It was devastatingly raw and they both remained silent after the outburst.
• • •
"Wei Ying." Jiang Chang trailed off, unsure how to communicate what he wanted to.
"Jin Guangyao was right about one thing, A-Cheng. You didn’t choose me.'' A sniffle escaped Wei Wuxian, "I was just doing what we said we would do; protecting people, trying to do honour to my name and the Jiang Sect; trying to live up to the title of being your right hand man. Why was I never good enough? Why does everyone leave?" Jiang Cheng wished the great Hanguang Jun was here, he was much more adept at comforting Wei Wuxian than he himself was. After so long hating the man, Jiang Cheng was finding it hard to face the other feelings he was having to deal with.
"I thought he was dead. I thought I was back and I would have to live on knowing he’d died alone in a mound built on the bodies of his family. But I was wrong. Lan Zhan found Wen Yuan." Wei Wuxian abruptly answered his original question, leaving Jiang Cheng speechless.
"You have met him, Lan Sizhui.” The fact that Wei Wuxian trusted him with this knowledge meant a lot to Jiang Cheng. He would not betray his brother’s secret. He would not bring danger into Wen Yuan’s world once more.
• • •
Suddenly Wei Wuxian laughed.
"We're going to do this a lot aren’t we?"
Jiang Cheng sighed. “I suppose we are." Jiang Cheng watched the smaller form of his older brother and found some of his old protective tendencies wanting to take a hold.
"Are you staring at me?" Wei Wuxian’s hands made to grab his face again. Jiang Cheng hurriedly caught them.
"Stop that. You’re filthy." Jiang Cheng grumbled half-heartedly. Wei Wuxian flopped over sideways onto the cushions beside Jiang Cheng and munched on a pastry.
"Eat and go to sleep Jiang Cheng. I've already sent out notices to Yunmeng and Lan Zhan telling them we’re ok. We can bath tomorrow." It wouldn’t be the first time they’d slept dirty. Jiang Cheng gave up, there was simply no arguing with Wei Wuxian and for the first time in many years the Two Prides of Yunmeng were side by side again, content in the others company.
Notes:
This is it. The final chapter. I may make this a series and add a separate story for all the little tidbits I didn't get to include so let me know what you think about that and some things you may have liked to have seen.
Thank you so so so much for the support during this fanfic. You've all been absolutely amazing and I've really felt so wonderful after each and every review. The recommendations you've all given me have been amazing.
Also a HUGE shoutout to Xummie who has been editing this fanfic despite our grammar differences.
I hope you all continue to hang around for future fanfics as I still have quite a few in mind.
