Too Quiet

Summary:

Diego sees Gyro's motorcycle out front, but the apartment is dead silent when he enters. Something isn't right.

Work Text:

Diego sighs as he steps out of his car, noting Gyro’s motorcycle in his usual spot, the first able-bodied space next to Johnny’s handicapped spot. He checks his phone with furrowed brows, wondering if his boyfriend even bothered to warn him about their guest. The tension leaves as quickly as it came, Johnny texted him twenty minutes ago to let him know that Gyro arrived unannounced. Very well, if it’s an unannounced visit Diego can’t fault Johnny for not warning him this morning. This might ruin their dinner plans, he hoped to take Johnny out tonight to avoid cooking (Johnny almost burned their place down making eggs and French toast, Diego has since vowed to never let him back in the kitchen for anything other than making coffee). Though, maybe, Johnny can convince Gyro to cook for them. As obnoxious as Gyro can be, Diego has to admit he’s amazing in the kitchen.

The townhouse is quiet when Diego steps in, leaving a foul taste in his mouth. Those two rarely shut up when they’re together and when they’re quiet, something terrible is afoot. They aren’t in the living room, so he ventures forth into the kitchen where Johnny and Gyro sit staring at one another silently. Johnny’s nose is wrinkled up and his cheeks puffed out slightly while Gyro looks normal... well, as normal as he can get with the gold grills in his mouth and strangely trimmed beard. He’s painting Johnny’s nails the same shade of blue as his favorite lipstick, white polish sitting near Johnny’s hands for nail art (steady surgeon’s hands make for smaller more intricate designs than Johnny or Diego can manage).

Diego grabs a magazine from the counter and slips it beneath Johnny’s hands, kissing his cheek. He can’t help the smile pulling at his lips when Johnny leans up to nuzzle his cheek. “Well, where’s the body?”

“Body?” Gyro asks, carefully wiping a small drop of polish off of Johnny’s skin after his sudden movement.

“Don’t play coy, Zeppeli,” Diego rolls his eyes, “Something must have happened for me to come back to a quiet home.”

Johnny’s lips part slightly as he contemplates saving Gyro from his boyfriend’s interrogation, a sliver of green across his tongue. It’s not the right shade to be from Gyro’s lipstick, as much as he dislikes him Diego trusts them both enough not to cheat. Gyro’s annoying, but he isn’t vile. And he and Johnny go far back, what had started out as a fake relationship to piss off Johnny’s birth father had blossomed into something real. It’s been five years, Diego’s waiting for the right moment to pop the question. It might have been tonight if not for a certain Zeppeli ruining that plan.

“You’ve been quiet, Johnny. You’ve done something worthy of my concern, have you not?” Diego asks in his best courtroom voice, fingertips trailing lightly over his jaw. Johnny presses into his touch, unable to keep from an embarrassed flush from his cheeks at Diego’s stern gaze. Goddamn lawyers, Johnny swears he’s going to kill Dio for tempting his boyfriend into law and honing his natural ability to control the room. Though, there are many things he’d like to kill Dio for, its Jonathan and Diego that keep him from doing so, though those were stories for another time.

Johnny swallows, pushing something off his tongue and up against the side of his cheek. “Dunno what you’re talking about.”

Diego clicks his tongue quietly. “You have something in your mouth?”

“Do I?” He tilts his head slightly with wide eyes. It’s a sad attempt to play innocent, far too over the top.

“Don’t you?”

Johnny sets his unpainted hand on the back of Diego’s neck and pulls him in. “You tell me.” He pulls him into a gentle kiss, coaxing Diego to lower his guard and part his lips when nipped at. Johnny takes advantage of the opportunity, using his tongue to jam something into Diego’s mouth. Diego splutters and steps back, pulling a tiny foam dinosaur from his mouth. It tastes gross and vaguely of glue and really this dramatic reveal was highly unnecessary.

In the gentlest tone he can muster, Diego only says, “I’m going to kill you.”

Gyro waves a hand dismissively, “Wait until I’m done, we’ve been at this for a while.”

That seems fair, Johnny is notoriously bad at sitting still to get his nails painted. He’s an expressive talker, which is why Gyro tries not to engage him when he’s at work. Usually they’re so loud Diego can hear them outside of the door when he steps in. As obnoxious as he finds Gyro, he’s happy he makes Johnny happy. It’s good enough for him.

Diego sets the dinosaur on the table, sitting in one of the other chairs at the kitchen table. “You have another few hours to live, cherish them, Jonathan Joestar, for they will be your last.”

Johnny snorts, “Yeah, sure , just like the last time. You’re just gonna--”

Gyro clears his throat loudly, trying to remind Johnny that he’s still here and is incredibly tired of hearing his dirty talk. “Use your last hours well, amico.”

Johnny sighs and settles down in his chair. “Dino me, Gyro.”

Silently, Gyro slips another capsule into Johnny’s hand. Diego sighs so loud Johnny can’t help but roll his eyes, but the fondness in his eyes warms Johnny’s heart.
