Chapter Text

“What the fuck.”

Hmm, that wasn’t the reaction you were expecting. You’d figured that with all of Dabi’s many piercings, he’d appreciate the shiny silver set of gages you’d gotten for him. “What?” you pout.

He looks like a deer in headlights, and you very privately decide it’s a cute look on him. He stares down at the small box laying open in his palm, and then meets your gaze again. Icy eyes narrow in suspicion. “What the fuck? Why are you giving me this.”

Your wings curl around you reflexively, a nervous habit you’ve yet to break. “Can’t a guy just give his friends gifts every once in a while?” you ask, trying to hide your anxiety with a smile.

Dabi’s eyes narrow further. “We’re not friends.”

You ignore the weird feeling in your chest his statement gives you and laugh. “Sure we are,” you reply breezily. “And relax, it’s just a gift. I saw it and thought you might like it.”

He slowly closes the box and stares like you like you’re a puzzle that’ll detonate if he doesn’t solve it soon. “Sure, hero,” he says nonchalantly, but there’s an edge to his voice that you can’t quite place.

You swallow uncomfortably and start zoning out into anxiety land as you two set your next meeting time & place. When the plans are set, he waves lazily behind him as he walks to the fire escape of the building you’re on top of, and you wonder what the hell you’re getting yourself into.

Chapter Text

The next time, he seems to take it slightly better. Just slightly.

“Why are you doing this?” he asks, frowning under his jacket hood.

You tap a nail against your thigh and shrug a little too quickly. “Call it a peace offering. Or a gift or just – you’re overthinking it.”

He raises an eyebrow. “I’m overthinking it?” he scoffs. “Hawks, people don’t – people don’t just give each other shit like this. What do you want from me? Beyond the obvious.”

You scrunch your shoulders up but then force yourself to relax them. You understand his mistrust a fair bit more than he realizes, but that’s a story for another day. “It’s not that deep, y’know. I saw the knife and figured you’d like it so here we are.”

Dabi huffs something that might be a laugh in another life and flips the butterfly knife in question around a couple times. You’re slightly mesmerized by how the metal handle catches the streetlight. “You know I won’t believe that’s all of it,” he says. He catches the knife with the blade out and mimes a gentle stabbing motion. “Also, what’s stopping me from, theoretically, maiming you with this someday?”

That’s cute. You cock your head to the side and stare at him. “Dabi, you know I have hundreds of knives on my back at all times, right?”

Dabi freezes for a split second, then keeps flipping the knife nonchalantly like he knew that already. You grin internally and mentally jot down that little tell. “Anyway,” you continue, “I assume from how you keep playing with it that you do like the knife.”

Dabi’s flipping slows down some. “…it’s not bad,” he admits.

Hell yes, fuck yes, mission accomplished, and you are one self-satisfied bastard. You beam at him as your wings quiver a bit in excitement.

A small little half-smile lingers on Dabi’s face for a second. He drops it quickly, of course, but something in your chest does a funny dance at its existence. You don’t really want to confront what that means quite yet, so you ignore the little voice asking you what the hell you’re doing and enjoy the moment while you can.
