christmas spirit

Summary:

Class 1-A schemes to get Todoroki and Bakugou together.

Notes:

Ok full disclosure: I didn't know if this was Christmas spirits as in alcohol or a general Christmas mood so I chose the more PG interpretation. I hope you enjoy!

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

It's the morning of December 7th, and the dorms are mercifully silent. Katsuki sleeps soundly on his memory foam mattress, unbothered by the outside world until:

"I don't want a lot for Christmas, there is just one thing I need!"

Mariah Carey's sonorous voice blasts from the living room, causing Katsuki to gently stir. He subconsciously moves his blanket over his ears, still not fully awake.

Then, because his classmates clearly have a death wish, someone turns it up even further. The louder volume, plus the god-awful voices of his classmates singing along to Mariah, is finally enough to wake Katsuki up. He growls in irritation. It's too damn early for these extras to fuck around, he thinks. He angrily puts on his clothes, brushes his teeth, and stomps downstairs to see just what the fuck his classmates are doing this early in the goddamned morning.

Once downstairs, he is immediately assaulted with Christmas lights. The damn things are everywhere! So are the miniature Christmas trees, and the gingerbread men, and the strings of tinsel, and just about every other goddamn Christmas decoration in existence. To add insult to injury, everyone who's currently downstairs (which, from a quick headcount, is everyone but one person) is dressed in ugly Christmas sweaters. It makes Katsuki sick. God, isn't there any other person in Class-1A who's already tired of this bullshit?

"What is happening here?" Shouto asks in his monotone drawl. Okay, so Katsuki was hoping someone else, someone less infuriating would agree with him but hey, he'll take it.

Izuku gives Shouto a sweetly  sincere smile, answering, "We're getting ready for Christmas! Want a sweater?" And of course, the nerd just happens to have a sweater lying around. (Katsuki actually sees that there are two sweaters. Part of him is disgusted at the fact that his class actually cares about him, but a larger part is touched by the gesture. Not that he'll admit to that.)

Shouto gives Izuku a tiny smile. Katsuki inwardly swoons but quickly swats those feelings away because it's too early to be this gay. "I'd love one. I've... never been given an ugly sweater." And, okay. Katsuki may be an asshole, but holy fuck even he can admit that Shouto's statement was depressing. His has the irrational urge to give Shouto the biggest hug he can muster, but he ignores it (see above).

Shouto slips on the sweater and wow. Oh wow. Interesting. It's too small on him, almost obscenely so. It's so outrageously hideous he almost wants to laugh, but he doesn't because hot damn. Shouto. Muscles. Wow. To top it all off, he has this adorable, satisfied grin plastered on his face.

Katsuki blushes. He is so gay.

"Hey, Bakubro, you want one too?" Katsuki, too caught off guard by Shouto's mere existence, doesn't notice Eijirou slipping the last sweater on him until it's too late.

The godforsaken thing is so ugly, Katsuki almost wants to barf. At least it's red, though, so his eyes will pop. Small mercies.

He reflexively looks towards Shouto, who's cheeks are also red. Shouto catches Katsuki's eyes and quickly looks away. Interesting.

That evening, Class-1A decides to have a family movie night. They all vote on the film, and the prevailing choice is The Muppet Christmas Carol. Katsuki tries to garner support for Die Hard, but no one else believes it's a Christmas movie. Idiots.

So here they are, watching the Ghost of Christmas Future do whatever the fuck it is ghosts do, when Katsuki feels a light thunk on his shoulder. Ever so slowly, he looks over and oh, what do you know, it's Shouto, fallen asleep on his shoulder. Katsuki's heartbeat picks up and his eyes widen. He feels so wholly unprepared for this entire experience. Looking up, he sees both Izuku and Eijirou giving him smiles and enthusiastic thumbs up. Bastards.

Then, because God truly hates him, Shouto lets out the tiniest snore and oh, there goes Katsuki's heart, mind and soul with it. Katsuki is overwhelmed. Gently, he picks Shouto up and takes him to his room, hoping that no one besides the two idiots he reluctantly calls best friends see. Naturally, everyone in the class sees (and swoons). Katsuki gently tucks Shouto in his bed and then heads to his own room.

Katsuki dreams of peppermint and mistletoe all night.

The next morning, Katsuki is woken not by sound, but by smell. Specifically, the smell of someone burning delicate crêpes. Irritated, Katsuki heads downstairs to rip one of his classmates a new one.

He abruptly stops when he sees Shouto, though. He was gonna yell, but Katsuki rethinks his position and decided to help instead.

It's just, Shouto is so lovably socially inept that Katsuki feels the need to help him. It's what heroes do. (And loving boyfriends, but that doesn't need to be said.)

Katsuki pulls the pan away from Shouto, not unkindly, and quickly whips up a new batch of batter. Shouto takes a step back, mesmerized by the amount of kindness he's being shown. After a short moment of watching, he decides to make himself useful and set the table. Katsuki grunts, and Shouto chooses to recognize it as a thank you.

Katsuki places a few crêpes on each of their plates, brings lemon juice and powdered sugar to the table, and has a seat. So does Shouto.

The two eat in a calm, respectful silence. Every now and then, one will look at the other fondly, get caught by the other, and both will look away, blushing. It's disgustingly domestic and Katsuki is ashamed to say he craves it.

Izuku quietly slinks downstairs, wondering why it's so quiet, when he sees the scene in the kitchen. He stealthily whips out his phone, takes a video, and sends it to Eijirou.

broccoli boy: so cute.mp4 are you thinking what I'm thinking?

rock boy: oh hell yeah! Let's do this, bro!

It's five p.m., the time when the dorms are usually bustling with the most activity, but it's suspiciously quiet. Katsuki wonders if he should look a gift horse in the mouth, but ultimately decides that he'd like to know what the stupid extras are up to. When he opens his door and walks outside, he nearly steps on a package.

It's a medium sized box wrapped in wrapping paper with a metallic red background and white matte reindeer. The little tag attached says, "Meet me downstairs at 5:30 —Shouto." Katsuki walks back in his room, this time with the box, and gingerly opens it. Inside is a maroon tuxedo and a pair of black leather shoes.

Now, Katsuki is no idiot. He knows that this package isn't from Shouto, because Shouto's characters are much smoother than those written on the tag. (No, Katsuki does not stalk his crush. He just happens to know these things, alright?)

But, he thinks, what could be the harm in wearing it? Logically, he knows that his class did this. He knows that they would never intentionally hurt his feelings, regardless of how shitty he's been to them in the past. He trusts them, to an extent. And besides, even if this is all a joke, Katsuki knows he'll look damn good in the tuxedo. He puts it on and checks the time. 5:27. He takes a deep breath and begins his trek downstairs.

Meanwhile, Shouto is having a minor crisis. He too received a mysterious box, his holding an emerald green tuxedo and a pair of leather shoes. He too knows that it's just a ploy by their class. He just doesn't understand the motive.

Considering the fact that Katsuki's signature was forged (badly, he might add), Katsuki probably wasn't in on the scheme. That meant that the class was plotting for them to do something together. Given the way Izuku had been talking to him recently, and the strange, scheming looks the class had been giving him all day, it was safe to assume that he and Katsuki would be doing something of the romantic variety.

But what if Katsuki isn't gay? Or what if he is, and just doesn't like Shouto? There are too many variables to be accounted for and Shouto is very uncomfortable by that fact.

But, he thinks, what if this is the moment I kiss Bakugou Katsuki? Shouto's heart leaps just at the thought of that happening.

It's settled then. He'll go downstairs, and if all goes to shit, at least he looks decent in emerald green.

~

The two of them arrive downstairs at the same time (how convenient). Once they spot each other they freeze, unable to speak. Both boys are taken aback by the other's handsomeness. Someone lightly clears their throat, but neither can tell who it is, too wrapped up in emotion.

Then, Katsuki's eyes flit upwards, and his jaw drops a little. "Oh," he whispers, causing Shouto to look up, too.

Of course. Class-1A had the brilliant idea of hanging mistletoe from the ceiling and get them together. Katsuki has to admit, it's not the worst plan his classmates have come up with.

Katsuki and Shouto lock eyes again. Shouto bites his lips, drawing the other's eyes to the motion. They slowly inch towards one another, breaths quickening and eyes fluttering shut. Gently, they kiss, and the whole world stops. Katsuki feels whole. They part lips after a while, foreheads touching. The breaths shared between them are heavy, laced with love and joy. Katsuki can't help but smile.

Maybe Christmas spirit isn't so bad, after all.
