    When the gunshot rang out, Hank froze. It was instinct, born of years of police work. A couple of seconds waiting for the gut punch of an impact, then the awful settling dread as you realised it wasn’t you.

    It wasn’t you, but you didn’t know who it was.

    But no one was shouting. There was no “Officer down!” and for a second Hank let himself breathe. Let himself believe that the shot had gone wide.

    And then he saw Connor.
