New Year's Kiss

Summary:

Dazai Holiday Week, Day 3: Scenario
Scenario: It’s nearly midnight on New Years Eve. Person A has fallen asleep, and Person B is trying to decide whether or not to wake them up.

Dazai and Kunikida are cuddling in bed on New Year's Eve. Kunikida is, of course, asleep, and Dazai doesn't know if he should wake him or not to get his New Year's kiss.

Work Text:

There’s fifteen minutes until the new year, and the only sounds in the bedroom were the hum of the heater and Kunikida’s soft breaths as he slept. Dazai wasn’t used to the peaceful silence so close to the end of the year, normally preferring to go out drinking with Yosano and the others until the next year, and then they would go home for the night.

Dazai knew that Kunikida wanted his “beauty sleep,” as the brunet joked, and they had gone to bed at a decent time. At least Kunikida had let him cuddle close to share warmth as the heater slowly started to warm the room.

There was ten minutes until the new year, and Dazai couldn’t decide whether to wake his partner or not. Would he take long to wake up? Maybe he would complain that Dazai woke him up and then just go back to sleep. That wouldn’t do at all.

Dazai reached over and brushed aside some stray hairs from Kunikida’s face. He still found it somewhat odd to see the other without his glasses, but it was something he was adjusting to. He liked looking at his green eyes in the dark, the way they seemed to hold the dim light of the lamp after it was turned off because he told Dazai to go to bed since it was late.

Even with his eyes closed, Kunikida’s face was still a thing of beauty. He was relaxed for once -- something he didn’t seem to be during the day even if his plans did go just like he wanted. Especially now that things had been getting worse in their city, the one they wanted to protect. Dazai really thought he deserved more time off.

Five minutes until the new year. Dazai contemplated tossing his phone across the room, just so he wouldn’t have to look at the time every so often. He knew it was something that kept him awake, yet he did it anyway. Not that he couldn’t see the alarm clock sitting on the nightstand on Kunikida’s side of the bed, the bright red numbers mocking him.

Dazai thought his want for a New Year’s kiss was silly at this point, and he was ready to roll over and attempt to get some sleep. It was then that his partner stirred, those deep green eyes unfocused from sleep as they opened to gaze over at Dazai.

Unable to help himself at the cute display, Dazai leaned over and pressed a short, soft kiss to Kunikida’s lips.

“Happy new year, sleepyhead,” the brunet murmured with a slight smile. It was somewhat amusing to see the confused look on Kunikida’s face before he leaned in for another kiss. Dazai was surprised, to say the least.

“Happy new year, Dazai. Now get some sleep, idiot. You need to be up for breakfast tomorrow. I’m not letting you skip it to sleep in.”

Dazai gave a playful whine, but he hid his smile by tucking his head under Kunikida’s chin and cuddling even closer. “Okay, okay. I’ll be good~”

Kunikida let out a huff, and then there was silence. Dazai was okay with this silence, because he could just barely hear Kunikida’s heartbeat over it. His smile stayed as he drifted off to sleep, his partner’s even breaths as his lullaby.
