Work Text:
Izuku couldn’t help it when he burst out laughing, all his attempts not to in vain. Shoto seemed proud of himself. “Another point for me,” Shoto said, crosslegged on the other side of Izuku’s bed. “You’re not very good at this game.”
Izuku puffed his cheeks up in protest, “I am
not
bad at it! You’re just- just- really good with your poker face!” Shoto smiled though… this one seemed distant. He mumbled out a yeah, and Izuku could feel the silence droning in the air.
“Hey… you know it’s
fine
to laugh right?” Izuku asked and before Shoto could open his mouth, Izuku moved his hand to hold Shoto’s. “-a-and smile and all that other stuff!” Shoto was interrupted once again by Izuku sighing. His eyes glanced to the side. “I… I know you’re trying…” Shoto solemnly nodded. It must be hard, Izuku imagined. "Imagine your whole life, just having one plain expression and never… never smiling… forgetting how. It really was sad."
"Sadder than the main protagonist's backstory."
Shoto chuckled, and Izuku looked up feeling his face heat up. “I’m sorry-! D-did I say that out loud?!” Shoto nodded his head, his eyes closed for a second before he opened them. Was it just Izuku or were they glistening brighter-? “Your first point.” Shoto said, “I guess maybe you
aren’t
so bad.” Izuku grinned opening his mouth to celebrate his victory though, Shoto cut him off. “-
but!
I’m still winning by far.” Izuku rolled his eyes sarcastically, still smiling. That earned him a huff. “Mmm, you’re lucky I love you.” Smiling, Shouto leaned back. “Yeah, I am.”
