Summary
A sudden attack on the Squads during what seems to be the final moments of a televised contest known as "The Long Walk" grants the last two men standing, Ray Garraty and Billy Stebbins, a chance that each of the eliminated walkers had prayed for prior to buying their tickets; a way out.
They are forced into learning to live with each other while hiding away from the Squads. Tension builds between Garraty and Stebbins when they are offered a chance to be recruited into the rebellious force that orchestrated their rescue.

The sharpness behind Ray’s eyes, just for a moment, flickers to blind panic. Pete can see it clear as day.
“I don’t know.”
For just a second, he’s afraid to ask more. He wants to tell Ray to go to sleep, and then never ask it to wake up. He knows that he can’t. That regardless of whatever happens next, he has to see it through. “Ray, where do you think you are?”
Ray pauses for a moment. Pete didn’t even know these things could hesitate. But it’s not enough time for Pete to convince himself it’s real before Ray is glancing around the room. “I’ve never been here before, so I don’t know.” Its voice is back to normal.

It’s 1:00 AM, and there's a killdeer outside of Ray’s dorm room.
In general, before moving into this dorm, Ray would've said that he had no problem with the Plover species of birds. In fact, if you had asked him how he felt about them, he probably would have asked what the fuck you were going on about.
But the person with no opinions on birds has long since left Ray’s body. He hated this bird. He hated this bird so much that his hatred had extended past a bloodline, it had cursed a whole species.
(In which Ray goes a little bit insane, and everyone else gets to come along for the ride.)
